Freshers Fair The academic year started off very well with our fresher’s and enrichment fair taking place at North Street. This was a huge success with various companies being present giving out freebies to our students. We also had a barbeque outside along with cage football, surf simulator, bucking bronco and jousting activities which were great fun for all. At the event we signed up hundreds of students for our programme of activities, so make sure you put your names down for any activities as places fill up quickly. We also organised a trip to Pole Position in November which was so popular we had to put another night on!

Watch out for our many upcoming trips!

Enrichment Enrichment activities are available to all full-time students, regardless of gender, age or ability, and provide students with opportunities to broaden their experiences and enhance their personal development. This year DJ Club and Guitar Club are already proving very popular with students, if you are interested in coming along, they take place every Wednesday at North Street.

A number of positive comments were reported including: • Good facilities on offer within the College • Tutors and teaching were very good • Good workshop environment • Support from all staff within College is of a good standard • Easy access to enrichment activities

ROOM FOERNT IMPROVEM A number of comments were raised as areas for improvements, where possible we have provided an answer or update Q. Is it possible to have a smoking shelter? A. The College has a no smoking policy therefore a shelter is not permitted Q. A number of students feel that activities are limited during break times. A. The Student Union will look into what other options are available and report back at the next meeting. Q. The pool tables are often out of order which restricts what you can do at break times. A. Unfortunately the pool tables are often vandalised. When the tables are being repaired it’s usually because cups are put down the pockets. If any students witness vandalism taking place please report it to a member of staff, which will be treated in confidence.

Q. Some students would like more time in the workshop in their first year. A. Classroom teaching is essential to learn the theory behind each trade and also Functional Skills and ICT. In the second year students will spend more time in the workshop. Q. The food in the refectory is expensive A. The pricing in the refectory is in line with the pricing set in other colleges. We do have weekly specials and meal deals so please look out for those. Q. Students in brickwork feel that the equipment used has become dated. A. We regularly update the equipment on an annual basis, often items can become tired depending on classroom sizes. The equipment in the brickwork area has now been updated, including new shovels, wheel barrows and trowels.

It has been a good start for LCB FC. We have a new team that is now starting to gel and who are displaying a huge desire to win which is fantastic to watch. Results so far haven’t gone our way, largely due to the fact we haven’t had a lot of time to train. However, the team and coaches appreciate that records are not going to be broken every season, but as long as we continue to make steady progress and individual 10

performances keep improving it won’t be long before the points on the table increase! We are very pleased with the players we have and understand that sometimes all sports men and women can go through tough frustrating times when playing sport at any level. We are looking forward to the New Year to see how the team can progress and with the same commitment, positive things can happen.

Gym and Boxercise

This year we have introduced a variety of activities to keep the sessions interesting and all students have benefitted from the recent refurbishment at Virgin Active! All students have learnt about how important goal setting is, how to build muscle and the difference between training for strength and for fitness.

Children in Need

This year we had an action packed day for Children in Need with both students and staff taking part. Many fun activities took place including a 5-a-side tournament in which over 25 students participated, “get soaked in the stocks” where many staff braved the cold weather to have cold sponges and buckets of water thrown at them, hamper raffle sale and also a cake and bun sale.

Thanks to all involved who helped to raise £406.80.

The Boxercise sessions have had good attendance and the students have learned about boxing fitness, footwork and defences and been pushed to their limits with skipping and circuit training. A number of students have chosen to join a gym as a result of attending the enrichment sessions which is about creating a healthy lifestyle, improving your fitness and self confidence.

Things to dLoeeds for free in Leeds Art Gallery

5-a-Side This year we have a new coach Vinnie Brockie who has developed a fantastic rapport with the team and it definitely shows in the performances. All the players that take part in 5-a-side really enjoy it and it is definitely something that if you try, you will be playing on a regular basis. As well as running regular tournaments and leagues we try new initiatives on a weekly basis such as Futsal, Street Soccer and Freestyle to help develop skills. The program is run at Goals Soccer Centre in Kirkstall, a fantastic facility to get the best out of any player. Goal of the season so far: Francis Rawson TCFT1G, who lobbed the keeper from his own half.

See a bit of culture at Leeds Art Gallery, home to a world class collection of 20th century British Art!

Kirkstall Abbey Enjoy a visit to the Abbey, a taste of medieval Britain. The Kaiser Chiefs played here recently, even if you didn’t have a ticket you could sit in the park for free and hear the show!

Leeds to Liverpool Canal Have a stroll along the canal, we are not saying all the way to Liverpool as it is 127 miles long, but a gentle stroll on a crisp winters day will blow away the cobwebs!

Men’s Grooming Answers 1. False: Applying a toner or soothing agent after shaving calms irritation, balances your skin’s moisture content and helps prevents ingrown hairs or clogged pores. 2. True: For maximum coverage, use a sunscreen with SPF15 or higher! 3. True: Most blades don’t stay sharp enough after 5 uses to closely shave hairs, leading to ingrown hairs or razor burn – ouch! 4. False: While men’s skin is thicker and can handle more abuse, facial skin is delicate and needs a gentler, less aggressive cleaning. 5. False: Washing many times when you have oily skin can sometimes trigger greater oil production, take it easy on the cleaning using a lightweight moisturiser or hydrating toner. 6. True: Hot water dries quickly on your skin and pulls away moisture, so short lukewarm showers are best! 7. Absolutely false: Great skin is something every man can work towards over time. By following a basic men’s grooming and skincare routine you too can maintain a healthy face and body (and just tell people it’s genetic).
