MOVIES TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2013

It’s inevitable - every year will always have an endless list of films to watch and with so much happening in the world of cinema, it can be hard to keep track of it all. We’ve taken a look into some must-see films in 2013....... To begin with, Gangster Squad will finally be out in January. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling will be together on the big screen in this Sean Penn and Josh Brolin production. If you are a fan of films about gangsters and mafias such as The Godfather, you will definitely enjoy this fast paced action based in 1950’s Los Angeles! Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3 is going to hit the cinemas in April 2013. It seems that this time Tony Stark will have to save something much closer to his heart – Pepper. The tin man who needs a heart has finally found a good reason to fight evil in the world. However, you are left with the impression that the battle will be between two men in iron suits, rather than real life super villains. Still on the hero wave, the new Superman film will also be out in 2013. Henry Cavill will be playing Clark Kent in Man of Steel. Although the last Superman film was released 6 years ago, again by Warner Brothers, the fans will not be disappointed. The trailer of the production promises a dramatic plot with a hero torn apart by his choices. Man of Steel will hit UK cinemas in June!

Everyone’s favourite actor, Johnny Depp, again shares the screen with Helena Bonham Carter in Disney’s production of The Lone Ranger, where he plays the role of Tonto. From what we have seen from the trailer, Johnny Depp’s character is just like a native American version of Jack Sparrow. You will be able to watch this in August. If you are a fan of the sci-fi genre, Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, will keep you breathless till the end. Situated on a space platform in the distant 2159, when the Earth is close to ruin and full of disease, Max (Damon) will engage in a mission to not only save his own life, but also bring equality to the population. So far critics have been generous with their applause, but you will have to wait until August to pass your judgement. The first part of the Hobbit Trilogy was released in December 2012 and will be showing in UK cinemas until February 2013. The second part, The Desolation of Smaug is promising to be an amazing cinematography experience and even better than the first film. Moreover, Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug will be joining his Sherlock colleague Martin Freeman, however you will have to wait until the beginning of December to get a glimpse of Middle Earth again.

Twilight fans should not worry as well. Although the saga is heading to its end, in 2013 The Host, Stephanie Mayer’s other famous book, is going to be released as a film. The impossible love between vampires is now replaced with the occurrence of aliens. You can watch The Host in March. 5 8729A LCB Student Newsletter Jan 2013 V4 5

p u d n u o R Sports Rugby League: LCB HAWKS

Football 11-a-side: LCB FC

This year the rugby league academy has started off really well and the attitude and commitment displayed by all the players has been excellent.

Football this season has started off brilliantly and the squad have really started to gel due to the structured training sessions which have got the best out of the players.

The first few games have been tough against quality opposition however as the season is progressing, we are seeing big improvements in the way the squad is coming together and working as a team. Steve Parnell, Coach says: “LCB Hawks is growing with new players signing up every week. We now have around 31 players registered which is brilliant news for the College with so many of the students taking part in some form of activity. The season so far has been hard but the players have all remained positive and are proud of being part of the LCB Hawks team. Due to the players’ timetables, we can only train once a week. We are at a disadvantage to other colleges as they train more regularly, as a lot of their players are studying sport related subjects. The players know this but have still given 100% at every game they have played. I would like to say a massive thanks to all the players, keep up your hard work and dedication for the team.”

As they moved beyond their first couple of fixtures, we can really see many positive traits expressed by all members of the squad. Mark Tinker, Sports Co-ordinator says “The LCB football team is a fantastic place to meet new friends, improve as a player and have fun! I have already seen big improvements in the way the team are playing and I am confident much more success is to follow. We are always looking for new players to come along and get involved so please TRY IT!” Players of the Term: ■ Jed Hickinson - Carpentry & Joinery Diploma ■ Luke Bonner - Plumbing

Football 5-a-side We have had a very exciting start so far with lots of representation from the various College sites and the players are displaying a very high standard of football.

Players of the Term:

All the games have been close, hard fought and competitive which is especially pleasing to see.

■ Matthew Todd - Carpentry & Joinery Diploma

Lockwood Way: 3 Points Stourton: 3 Points

■ Steve Waterhouse - BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction

Millwright Street: 6 Points

■ Jack Young - BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction

Player of the Term: ■ Daniel Phillips - Electrical “I am very proud to represent

Lockwood Way at 5-a-side each week, we work very well as a team and I have enjoyed the activity so far and hope for more success to come. I would like to thank my team mates who I feel have displayed a fantastic team effort and performance throughout.”

Boxercise The Boxercise sessions that are held at Virgin Active gym at Kirkstall have been very successful this year with many students attending every week. The sessions start at 2pm and run for approximately 1 hour every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. The sessions include a mixture of circuit work, pad work and some boxing techniques to help you build muscle and get fit at the same time. You will also learn some exercises that you can do in your own time to increase your strength and fitness. We have a good selection of equipment to use in each session including gloves and pads, and the facilities at Virgin Active are one of the best in Leeds. As well as taking part in the Boxercise session you can also use the gym facilities which are all free to you! A lot of the students like to warm down using the treadmills, bikes and rowing machines and then chill out in the swimming pool, steam room and sauna which is really good for your muscles after a tough workout in the Boxercise session!! You don’t need to be Mike Tyson to join in and the emphasis is on having fun, so come along when you have enrichment. If you are interested speak to Denis in the Student Union office for more details.

What Is ? Enrichment Enrichment activities provide all full-time students, regardless of age or ability, with opportunities to broaden their experiences and enhance their personal development.

Every student can enrol on one or more enrichment activity. The range and variety of activities on offer means there is something to cater for every individual. A college shouldn’t just be somewhere you come to get qualifications, but a place where you can enjoy yourself and develop interests and skills that can be continued for life. The range of activities covers various sports, educational trips and recreation. Universities and employers are interested in seeing whether applicants can show evidence of wider interests,

leadership skills and enthusiasm before deciding whether to offer a place, so we strongly recommend that students get involved in some of our enrichment activities alongside their main programme of study. The things you need to know about enrichment: ■ It broadens the learner’s experience and enhances personal development ■ It fosters attitudes and skills necessary to maintain life long learning ■ It widens individual choice ■ It widens participation ■ Participation and achievement in enrichment are recognised for higher education and employment ■ It’s a way of making new friends

Healthy College LCB is committed to the wellbeing of all students, throughout the year we run campaigns on the following: ■ Emotional Wellbeing ■ C-Card Scheme ■ Stress Busting ■ Depression ■ Exercise ■ Anxiety ■ Recreation ■ Alcohol Awareness ■ Stop Smoking ■ Diet & Nutrition ■ Healthy Eating ■ Sexual Health ■ Chlamydia Testing ■ Counselling ■ Relaxation

College Trips

This year many trips and activities will be taking place throughout the academic year from go karting to a trip to Go-Ape. The demand is always huge with some students enjoying as many as four trips in one year. Here are details of the trips taking place this year:

Go Ape - April 2013 Go Ape is the UK’s number one forest experience and involves fun and adventure with tree top crossings, tunnels, bridges and an epic wind-in-your-face zip wire to finish. The trip includes a visit to the Dalby Forest site in North

Yorkshire with coach travel there and back.

Alton Towers - June 2013 Alton Towers is home to Britain’s most-loved theme park and features a wide range of exciting rides and white-knuckle roller coaster rides. The trip to Alton Towers includes access to all rides with coach travel there and back.

In February this year we will be holding Healthy College Week in which we run various tutorials, quizzes and activities. If you have any ideas or suggestions for issues yyou would like to see covered during this is week please contact Student Services on 0113 222 6002.

The trips are a great way to meet new friends and a way of having fun and taking your mind off College work and exams!! All of the trips are great value for money; all you have to do is sign up and turn up.

Students Visit Balfour Beatty Construction Site Balfour Beatty welcomed a combination of 1st and 2nd year BTEC Extended Diploma students to their site at Doncaster Southern Gateway as part of an Open Doors initiative, which gave an insight into the work that takes place during construction and civil engineering projects. The ÂŁ25m Doncaster Southern Gateway White Rose Way improvement scheme is being completed in two phases and involves upgrading 1.9km of existing carriageway between junction 3 of the M18 and Lady Bank junction at Lakeside Retail Park. The principle feature of the scheme is the 184m long road bridge over 17 railway tracks, including the East Coast Main Line. The students listened to a presentation given by the project management team about the bridge construction. They had the opportunity to ask questions and gain a real insight into the day to day issues they faced.

Herd Farm Visit In September last year, the ďŹ rst year BTEC groups took part in a visit to Herd Farm Activity Centre for a day of fun and adventure. It was a great day for the students and tutors to get to know each other and they enjoyed many different activities including jacobs ladder and high rope adventures.

All students then had a safety site induction and as you can see from the photos, they had to wear appropriate PPE to enter the site. Finally, the students were given a guided tour of the site including a detailed overview of the various structural and ground work elements. Site visits are a great way of visualising how the theory you learn at College is put into practice on site. 8 8729A LCB Student Newsletter Jan 2013 V4 8

NACUE

(THE NATIONAL CONSORTIUM OF UNIVERSITY ENTREPRENEURS) Mirabel is currently in her 2nd year of a full-time Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment and has recently become involved with an organisation called NACUE (The National Consortium of University Entrepreneurs) which provides a voice for enterprising and entrepreneurial students. Mirabel explains more: “NACUE is an organisation introduced to me by the College as an enrichment opportunity to give me a chance to become an exceptional leader in the future, to inspire my peers and build a lasting legacy for myself. I had the opportunity to receive training and link with other institutions up and down the UK, who have been running their societies for years and become great entrepreneurs even after leaving the institutions nstitutions they were in.

(successes) and what didn’t work as well, discussed how they could be done better and what works for us. Being involved with NACUE has helped my confidence and fine tuned my organisational skills. It’s something I would recommend to others in the construction business as it is highly relevant as some of us would like to become self-employed. It’s a way of giving us a dry run before we step out in to the real world of business.” If anyone is in interested getting involved with NACUE, please see Denis in the Student Union Office.

In the meetings I attended, they gave e us an understanding of the current climate we are in. We were advised that economic growth does not come from the big businesses or being risk-adverse k-adverse but more from little start-ups, pushing the e parameters of what is possible, building a culture, a community and bringing new solutions to the market,, which thrives on competition and seeks innovation. So far I have attended two events. The he first one was in London for the National Leaders Training ning Conference (NLTC) where I was introduced to the he UK NACUE team and other institutions, (Universities/Colleges), ties/Colleges), who were involved with NACUE in the e networking sessions. At this event we had numerous workshops, shops, from personal branding and emotional intelligence telligence to developing a sound funding strategy and building sustainability and legacy. We also listened tened to some om great speakers, such as Russ Shaw - former form Vice ice President and General Manager at Skype kype pe a and nd Dan Sodergren - awarding-winner business ss owner and dynamic marketing specialist. The second event was in Birmingham am for the regional regio meeting where we continued with ourr training programme and progress reports on our ventures in our institutions. We evaluated what at went well
