Hello and welcome to Leeds College of Building (LCB). My name is Denis Metcalf and I’m the College’s Student Liaison Officer. I’m responsible for co-ordinating the College’s Enrichment Programme and managing the Student Union.

I’m based in room E30 which is at the North Street Site on the top floor just outside the Refectory. My main aim is to make your time at College as enjoyable and trouble-free as possible, encouraging participation in a variety of student activities and ensuring you are kept up to date with the latest student news and information. Our Sports Co-ordinator, Mark Tinker works alongside me to promote and organise all the College sporting activities which include football, rugby, fitness training and boxercise. Mark is based in the Student Union office but will also be visiting the other College sites every Wednesday and Thursday morning. We also have a mini-bus pick up service. n o i n U t n Stude The Student Union (SU) has two roles at LCB ▲ It manages the enrichment, sport and social activity programme ▲ It acts as a channel of communication to represent your opinions and views and aims to provide support to you if you need representation The SU organises various activities including sports events, social functions, outdoor pursuits and fundraising events, it also offers advice on various aspects of College life, health and wellbeing.

NUS Extra Card and Democracy Card A Democracy Card is a free card that holds no discounts. Your Democracy Card is your local student union membership card that can be used for access and/or voting purposes and receiving campaign and other NUS information. NUS Extra is a student discount card which will cost £12. The NUS Extra card will get you exclusive discounts available on the High Street and online, in many cases the discount is 10%. On average, students save over £500 a year by using their Extra card. For more information about the discounts available and how to purchase your NUS Extra Card please visit the Student Union Office at the North Street site or visit the NUS website www.nus.org.uk.

Enrichment

Enrichment activities are available to all full-time students, regardless of gender, age or ability, and provide students with opportunities to broaden their experiences and enhance their personal development.

Every student can enrol on one or more enrichment activity. The range and variety of activities on offer means there is something to cater for every individual. A College shouldn’t just be somewhere you come to get qualifications, but a place where you can enjoy yourself and develop interests and skills that can be continued for life. Often universities and employers are interested in seeing whether applicants can show evidence of wider interests outside of their studies, so taking part in enrichment is perfect for demonstrating this. As well as improving your overall health and wellbeing, participation in enrichment activities can help develop team/leadership skills, introduce you to new friends and boost your confidence. Our aim is to ensure you get the most out of your time at College and have some fun! Details can be found on the posters around College and on our TV display system. Enrichment activities take place on Wednesdays or Thursday afternoons. Don’t lose out - to find out more about taking part in the enrichment programme speak to Denis or Mark, either at North Street or when they are visiting the other sites on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Money Tips Saving Everyone wishes that their money would stretch a bit further and this guide will give you some advice on the financial support available within College and tips on how you can manage your money. First of all check with Student Services to see what financial help may be available to you whilst in College, you may qualify for the Bursary or Learner Support Fund that can help you pay for travel and books whilst in College. Many of our students try and get a part-time job, either on an evening or weekend, not only does this look great on your CV, it gives you confidence, you can meet new people and most of all you can get a weekly or monthly wage. Many local supermarkets, clothes shops and restaurants have student vacancies.

Tips for Saving Money Sign up for an NUS card which gives you discount in many shops and online! If you haven’t already done so check with Student Services to see if you are entitled to a free or discounted bus pass Register with voucher sites to get discounts off local restaurants! If you haven’t got a home PC use the one’s in College, the library is open in the evenings and is often quieter then! If you do have a PC at home you can buy Microsoft Office at a discounted rate, check with the IT team to find out how to do this. Check with the library to see if they’ve got the books you need before buying them. There are often lots of things to do for free in Leeds and the surrounding areas, use the internet to see what is going on near you. Take advantage of the free activities on the enrichment programme in College

...and remember.......if you don’t need it, won’t use it, or can’t afford it - don’t buy it! 6 8220 LCoB SU_Newsletter v2.indd 6

s d r a w A d n a s n io it t e p Com Competitions play a big role in student development at the College and we encourage students to participate in regional and national competitions. We feel taking part in these events allows students to showcase their skills, and for the winners, not only can they receive great prizes it gives them a head start in their chosen career. Feedback from students who have taken part in the competitions is excellent, it’s given them the opportunity to compete at a high level, increased their confidence, allowed them to demonstrate their skills to potential employers and they are extremely proud of what they have achieved.

Shane Trevitt Gold Medal WorldSkills Plumbing & Heating

WorldSkills UK is the name for the UK’s premier set of skills competitions for young people and adults. The competitions aim to encourage people across the UK to excel in their work-based skill. They also aim to help lift standards of training and performance. The competitions run both regionally and nationally each year in the UK and aim to help lift standards of training and performance, promoting world class skills and international competitiveness. Outstanding WorldSkills UK National Finalists may be considered for potential inclusion in a shortlist for the team that goes on to represent the UK at a WorldSkills Competition. The most recent WorldSkills

competition took place in October 2011 in London. One of our students, Shane Trevitt won a gold medal in the plumbing category. The SkillBuild competition is the largest multitrade competition in the country for construction trainees and Apprentices and covers areas such as carpentry, plastering and wall and floor tiling. SkillM&E consists of four skills competitions that search for the best mechanical and electrical engineers from the building services engineering sector and is run by Summit Skills. We also enter the Dulux Apprentice of the Year, Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year, National Apprenticeship Awards, HVCA Training Awards, West Yorkshire Life Long Learning Awards and many more. If you are interested in getting involved in any of these competitions or want to find out more information about competitions taking place in your chosen area of study please contact your Course Tutor.

Rep MeetingsClass Rep? a e b o t e k i l Would you

The role of a class rep is to represent yourself and other students within your class, and raise opinions and concerns at regular class rep meetings with the Student Liaison Officer, your Faculty Manager and College staff. You then have to report the results back to the students. It gives you the chance to have your say, not only in your individual course area but in the College as a whole. You will develop skills that will look good on your CV and that are attractive to an employer and gain confidence dealing with different people. If you are interested in becoming a Class Rep, please see your Course Tutor or Denis in the Student Union Office. Here is the timetable for the scheduled class rep meetings.
