Spring sports gear up county-wide Now that winter is behind us (hopefully), springtime sets its sights on Lake County. Whether you like to bring out the tents, fire up the mower and BBQ, the possibilities are endless. For Lake County athletes, it’s their time to focus on spring sports to help bring in the final stretch of the school year. For the seniors who many are multiple sport athletes, it’s one chance to give it all out on the diamond, arena or on the track. For the Lakeview Honkers, the baseball team and softball teams led by second year coaches Pat Petersen and Sam Damuth are focusing on the continuation of building their programs as they look to complement longtime track coach Bobbie Steninger and veteran coaches Brian Dunn for golf and Daniel and
Carmen Tague for the Equestrian team. Familiarity exists in Paisley and North Lake with longtime coaches Mark Douglas, Tony Cardoza and Katie Escene as they feature the most student-athletes on the team in several years. At North Lake, baseball coach Dan Ward and track and field head coach Scott Brown are back for another year, as they look to make a deep run in the state playoffs. While unable to get outside early on, the athletes have been working hard indoors to leave it all out on the field. Even though a few home games were cancelled early on, plenty of games still remain to cheer on your favorite athlete. The baseball pitching staffs will be tested, with the OSAA pitch count rule in effect, giving
plenty of opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to have their chance in the circle and on the mound to see what kind of talent is awaiting in the future. Inside the spring sports preview includes stories, interviews, team photos, rosters and upto-date schedules of your favorite sports teams from the Lakeview Honkers, Paisley Broncos and North Lake Cowboys. So whatever your favorite sport is, make plans to support your favorite teams a couple times this season and give the athletes, especially to give the seniors a proper spendoff before graduation. Grab your hometown gear and we’ll see you on the track or the diamond.

LHS Golf feature young talented team By Michael Acosta Lake County Examiner After falling short in their pursuit of a state berth a year ago, the Lakeview golf team has re-loaded this season and features 10 golfers. Led by Head Coach Brian Dunn and Asst. Coach Drew Taylor, who was a golfer himself back in high school, the golf team has hit the ground running. With weather playing a role early on, the golf team has been limited to practicing in the Lakeview gym, working on their putts, chipping and short irons and some of the fundamental work. Many of the golfers have never played before, or have very little experience. This year’s team has four returning players. “Being a coach brings back a lot of memories for me as a golfer in high school,” Taylor said. “I can remember and relate to the frustrations, especially to the new golfers when they tell me that they can’t hit a ball.” “It can be so boring hitting wiffle balls in a

gym,” added Dunn with a laugh. “I understand their frustrations, but if we don’t get some swings in with those wiffle balls then I wouldn’t even be comfortable taking them to a tournament.” After their pursuit of a state berth fell short, Dunn is forgetting about that and moving forward with this year’s team. “Our district has grown to 16 teams this season,” Dunn said. “There’s some outstanding teams in the district this year. Right now we’re about a fifth or a sixth place team. By the end of the season at the district meet, I hope to be a top three team.” With many multi-sport athletes amongst the group of 10, practices have been about going back to the basics, while many of the returning golfers haven’t picked up a club in a year. “It’s pretty amazing how quickly they pick it up, once they get into a rhythm,” Dunn said. Dunn’s number one goal is to have everyone playing varsity style golf by the end of the season and he just wants to see everyone having fun. “I want everyone to play good, but most of all I want them having fun each and every time they step out on the golf course,” Dunn said. “My returning two seniors; Cheyenne and Talon, I want them to have really good seasons. Talon Sancliff is a four year golfer and Cheyenne Gaus is another four year golfer.” Gaus shot a personal best 115 at the first meet of the season and Dunn is optimistic that she can be at or below a 100 by the end of the year. With the schedule remaining largely the same this year, it gives plenty of opportunity to continue learning the courses and for the returning golfers,

on,” Dunn said. “Many of these courses we will see several times throughout the year and Districts are always either at Centennial, Tokatee or Bandon,
so I like playing on those courses several times a year, to prepare them for the district meet at the end of the season.”

Veterans lead LHS Equestrian Team By Michael Acosta Lake County Examiner
With four returning on Lakeview’s Equestrian Team, optimism and goals are running high this season. Leading the charge is advisor/coach Daniel Tague, with his wife Carmen Tague and they have a new assistant coach in Danielle Elder who joined the coaching staff this season. Both Elder and Carmen Tague specialize in English riding and do a majority of the riding. The team has been practicing since mid-November at Norma Angele’s arena on the Westside. Equestrian was first introduced to Lakeview High School in 2001 and the Tague’s took over the team in 2009. A strong start of the season has led to senior Brette Graham placing first in the Hunting seat over fences in both meets. “Brette’s done outstanding and is putting herself in a great position to qualify for the state meet,” Daniel said. Other notable finishers in their second meet of the season: new comer Ella Villagrana placed fourth in roping and the team versatility, the LHS team finished fourth. With only three meets this season before the state

meet, each rider has their work cut out for them. Graham qualified for both the state meet and the regional meet a season ago where she was the top rider for Oregon at the regional meet. “Early on we’ve done really well and I’m very impressed with what each rider has contributed this season,” Daniel said. “This third meet we have coming up will tell us a lot about
accrued throughout the season, continue making improvements above last season and most of all have fun. Lakeview is in the central district, one of the largest districts in the state, that covers a big area including Lake County, up through the Dalles, Hood River and Pendleton.

where we’re at as a whole.” There’s a limit to how many events the riders can participate in. They can only participate in five individual events, but can do as many team events as they want. With the Equestrian riders in multiple sports such as track or softball, it does make it difficult to schedule practice times, but they make it work as best they can. “Our team is working really well together,” Daniel said. “The fact that we were able to start practicing earlier really helped us out with getting more practice time in. Ella Villagrana is new to Equestrian, but isn’t new to the horsing world which helps out a ton.” Goals for the season are simple; qualify for the state meet, which is based on the number of points

LHS Softball builds off last season
By Michael Acosta Lake County Examiner
Qualifying for the state playoffs a year ago is just the beginning for the Lakeview Lady Honker softball team as they enter year two under Head Coach Sam Damuth. Due to the winter weather outside on the fields, Damuth purchased equipment to help his team with the fundamentals while they’re in the gym. “Last year we didn’t have the equipment to work on our fundamentals in the gym, “ Damuth said. “We were basically limited to working on our defense, which worked well in games because the majority of our games were won by our defensive effort.” Damuth said that while their hitting wasn’t where it should’ve been last year, it should be a different story this year. This off season, the girls have been working more cardio and Damuth said he has a “phenomenal” group of girls this year and has very high expectations for them in their first year as a 2A/1A special district five.

and seniors for playing time and I like seeing that as competition as a coach. We have a very nice mixture of returning and new players.” Losing two all league players 3B Cheyenne Evans and SS Lizzy Ramsey and pitcher Grace Thomas isn’t an easy replacement. But, several players have stepped up, including primary catcher Cara Albertson who will split time as a pitcher, a position she played when she was younger. “We’ve had a lot of position battles for many different positions,” Damuth said. “I’m going into our opening game, without a set starting lineup, because everyone has done so well.” Moving into a special district, the Lady Honkers will see a few new schools such as Chiloquin, Butte Falls and Lost River. This year will also mark a double-header series with rival Modoc. “We’re going to have some great competition this year,” Damuth said. “Early on, all we can really do is be mentally prepared
each game.” His strengths this year are his top pitcher Junior Alyson Yates. He’s been really impressed with her as she’s worked to pitch over 50 mph. He expects his right side of the infield to
be strong with two returners in second baseman Jocelyn McCallister and first baseman Caley Creager and a speedy outfield. “Emily Philibert and Zoe Suba have done really well for me in the circle so far and I’ll have a lot of catchers/pitchers,” Damuth said. “We’re going to have a very balanced team and I think our defense will be top-notch again this year.” In his two years at the helm, Damuth has focused on building up the program with many younger players, so that way he doesn’t take as big a hit, when the seniors leave the program. “Losing three girls last year was tough, but I gained four outstanding freshman and I hope to continue that,” Damuth said. Gaining access to the vacant Coca Cola Building in Lakeview has allowed many of the players the ability to work on hitting and pitching since the end of softball season last year.

Honker Baseball eyes state playoff berth By Michael Acosta Lake County Examiner
Weather may have dampened the Honker baseball teams’ plans to practice outdoors in the beginning, but there’s plenty of enthusiasm and a desire to win on this year’s squad. Led by second year Head Coach Pat Petersen, he’s liked what he’s seen out of his team so far. “The effort has been really great,” he said. “The team is working hard as much as they can while we’re still in the gym.” Citing last season’s early hitting struggles, the team had a hitting cage set up this season, to try to combat that and turn it into a strength this season. “Things are looking as good as they can, with what we have to work with,” Petersen said. Replacing seniors is never easy, as Lakeview lost four in total but Petersen is impressed with what he’s seen from the junior class. “The junior class this year is huge in terms of numbers and qualities,” Petersen said. “We have a good bunch of seniors this year also, who have bought into the program and know what they have to do in or-

The Honkers as a whole are deep with pitchers, which is a nice thing to have given the OSAA’s pitch count rule. “It’s great having Alex back,” Petersen said. “He never has arm trouble, throws around the plate and throws a lot of strikes. We lost a little talent from last year’s squad, but

should be the cream of the crop this year. North Lake is another team to watch and some of these other teams, we’ve never played before but I expect our league to be tough.” Pitching and defense will be solid for Lakeview this year, especially outfield defense with a familiar face in Jace Brazeal. He is back on the team and roaming the outfield this year, after electing to run Track a season ago. Team chemistry is also a huge strength this season. “Team Chemistry is great, with many players having played together for several years,” Petersen said. “They really play well off of each other and I love seeing that from a coaching view.” After a mis-communication about whether there was a league playoff or not a season ago, it’s something that weighs on the players minds as they want to control their own destiny and not rely on anyone but themselves. “Bottom line last season was we needed to win that last game but we didn’t,” Petersen said. “Going into this, we don’t want to leave it to anybody else but ourselves.”

LHS Track & Field runs deep with talent By S. Garrett Shaw Lake County Examiner Lakeview High School’s Track & Field team has seen the same head coach for decades. Bobbie Steninger has led the Honkers to multiple state appearances and high point finishes and after taking 22 athletes to state in 2018, Steninger is looking to repeat that success with the 2019 Honkers. With relays a strong suit of last season, capitalizing on the weaknesses of the new 2A league the Honkers are in will be a trend all season. In the past it had been boy’s high hurdles, but being nearly six hours away from their furthest competition Bandon, it’s going to be impossible to get a full read on the league. Steninger has always developed the team’s schedule in a manner that includes the toughest competition in order to get the best out of her athletes. She’d much rather them finish second or third to someone and learn from it than run through the competition on the way to the district meet. With a group of 12 experienced seniors returning this season, Steninger

isn’t focused on singling anyone out, but realizes the amount of youth and combination of experience will pay dividends down the road. “My hope is that they all learn skills that make them successful,” said Steninger. “There’s 17 events and I encourage the older ones to try new things.” Developing those athletes is the point behind almost every sport, but in one with so many avenues it can be an uphill battle.
for success regardless of the situation. With five total staff members on the team including herself, each individual is responsible for a certain specialty on the track. The staff even rotates to help out with the Junior High coaching during the week. Grades are also another piece of the puzzle and being a teacher herself,

There will be no shortage of new experiences for the Honkers, as a few of the athletes will participate in a heptathlon decathlon meet that isn’t even included on the schedule. This is used to test the athletes, but is also an exciting thing to have participants in for Steninger. “It’s a meet kids want to go to and experience that competition,” said Steninger. The Honkers won’t be running in dual meets per usual; a preference of Steninger’s due to the fact that she never wants to load a week with two meets if she doesn’t have to. This limits injuries and gives the athletes a chance to recover before otherwise important meets. However, with weather always a factor in Lakeview, every day outside is a precious learning experience. “It’s (the weather) a handicap and we know it,” said Steninger. Whether it’s the snow or the smoke, battle against the elements is just another hurdle to overcome. Luckily for the team, a strong group of coaches create the best scenarios
Steninger won’t allow lack of meeting a grade point average affect the team down the road. This year will be a constant search to figure out what the Honkers have in terms of point posters, but for the time being the beginning of the season is the perfect opportunity to develop, coach and learn the ins and outs of track.

Paisley Track features strength in numbers
By Michael Acosta Lake County Examiner
With as large a team as they have had in several years, the Paisley Broncos track team has been hard at work as they look to send several of their athletes to the state meet this year. Each student athlete follows the same three words: class, honor and dignity each time they step out onto the playing field. Led by Head Coach Mark Douglas, who has been with the program for over 20 years the Broncos have been practicing for about a month and have able to have several practices outdoors despite weather. He’ll be joined by Tony Cardoza and Katie Escene. Cardoza and Douglas started as volunteer coaches at Paisley and have been coaching together for nearly 25 years. “Our track is still muddy from all the winter weather,” Douglas said. “We’ve been in the gym some and been able to run out on the city streets. Fortunately we don’t get a lot of traffic through Paisley.” With only 34 students enrolled at the school, 24 of them are on the track team marking their highest numbers in nearly 10 years. “We’ve looked really strong so far,” commented Douglas. “We probably have more talent out here than we have had in several years. It’s still early though, since nearly half the kids have never done

We’re really excited for the season though.” Returning are sisters Lattigo and Riata Norris as well as Aiden Jones and Camden Froehlich who all medaled at the state meet last year. “Aiden was only a couple of inches from winning the shot put last year,” Douglas said. “Lattigo and Riata both medaled and Camden had never pole vaulted until last season and he medaled at the state championships. We have high hopes for Camden this season.” The large numbers this season allows the Broncos to “cover the spread” as they will have participants

in just about every event with a maximum of four events that the athletes can participate in. “On the girls side, we’re going to really concentrate on the 4x100 relay,” Douglas said. “We’ve got four really fast girls and I think it’s going to be really competitive.” The practices are varied with a warm-up around town, sometimes up the hill behind downtown and then they come down stretch and then break off. The schedule will be tough, as they’ll be facing off against some of the top competition as they compete in many invitationals. “A lot of our meets this year will have better competition than we’ll face in the state and district meets,” Douglas said adding that when they attend the Summit Invitational next month, it’ll be against some of the best teams in the Northwest. to get out and learn or fine-tune many of their events. “In track there’s 17 events for boys and girls,” Douglas said. “As coaches it’s hard for us to get around to each and every event, so guys like Aiden, Lattigo, Riata and Camden, kids that are returning or have medaled we rely on them to help out and it’s like having more assistant coaches.” Last season, the Paisley Boys took third at districts and the girls placed fourth, but this year the OSAA expanded their district making it more of a challenge to get back to state. “I think the girls will place within the top three this year,” Douglas said. “I think the boys team will be right there. North Lake is returning champions on the girls side, so we’d like to give them a run for their money.”

North Lake’s Track & Field team has a lot to look forward to this upcoming season. Led by Head Coach Scott Brown in his 5th year at North Lake, the Cowboys are looking to continue their streak of sending athletes to the OHAA Track & Field State Championship. On the girl’s side of the team, losing multiple state champions two years ago was thought to doom the Cowboys, but the team responded accordingly and took the OHAA District Championship for the second straight year and returned most of their high point placers. Andrea Roth, Judah Koehler and Briana Church lead the team in their respective events with Roth participating in the hurdles and triple jump, Church a back to back state champion in the pole vault and Koehler taking care of the distance work for the team. Flipping the script to the boy’s team, seniors Cole Vore, Ethan Fine and junior Silas Roth are the headliners for this season among a youthful group. Vore was out last season with an ACL injury,
but is looking to continue his breakout season during his sophomore year where he finished 4th in the pole vault and 6th in the high jump at the state meet. Roth broke Vore’s record last year in the high jump and will look to continue climbing the ladder with Fine handling the load in the longer distance runs. Regardless who’s taking care of the load, Brown hopes his team scores as a collective group. “I want us to score in every event,” he said with a chuckle. North Lake will have that opportunity with six seniors on the guy’s side and plenty of youth on the girls. Being a small school does have its downfalls though. Due to their small team size, the Cowboys don’t participate in dual meets and therefore give their best shots during invitationals. Ideally, dual meets happen on a weekly basis, but out of the 13 or so meets a team can schedule throughout the year, the team only participates in around eight. Along with size, there’s
been another hurdle. The same issue during the cross country season for Coach Brown has been the case for the track and field team. Visibility standards sent from the OSAA informed Brown that if he couldn’t see Table Rock merely two miles away, they couldn’t practice. Months ago it was the smoke, now its been the snow. “Figuring out how to do things inside has been a struggle,” said Brown. For the Cowboys, adapting on the fly has been something the school has had to do for years, but it’s never stopped them
from turning out strong finishers at the district and state level. Leaning on those point earners from the season before will be more of the same this year and perhaps some unfamiliar faces will make their presence known along the way.

Cowboys set sight on district playoffs By S. Garrett Shaw Lake County Examiner North Lake Baseball’s Head Coach Dan Ward has seen a lot over his decade plus of coaching. Having been in the dugout since 2004 for the Cowboys with a short break away from the team 2013-2016, Ward is looking forward to another strong season on the diamond. This season Ward will look to build on a .500 record last year in league play finishing 7-7 and a 1012 overall mark. With the expansion of the league coupled with 2A teams, the Cowboys have an uphill battle to sneak into the state playoffs behind the pitching of senior and son of the head coach, Damon Ward. Ward is looking to show off his right handed throwing at the next level at Lane Community College next season and build upon leading the team to

“Sometimes it’s hard to coach your kid because you expect the best of them,” said Coach Ward. “He’ll move around a lot for us wherever we need him.” Along with Ward, junior Tyce Grassman has experience behind the plate catching and will also be used in rotation on the bump. With seven seniors in Levi Waldron, Logan Warfle, Elisha Roth, Colby Haigh, Tyrell Schroeder, Tony Anderson and Ward, the team still has some youth with their largest roster in recent memory; a 22-man team split up between junior varsity and varsity players. Coach Ward has yet to make the decision on varsity and junior varsity and will dabble with various lineups throughout the early parts of the year to see if the youth of his team will step up to the plate. David Taylor and Joe Worden will be the players to watch on the come up this year, as this is Worden’s first season back playing since rec ball.
“He’s got some raw talent and we’ll see if it’s
still there,” said Coach Ward. The goal this season is simple; finish in the top four of the league and control their own destiny. However, with the installation of pitch count and the lack of rotation in their pitching as a small school, Coach Ward will have to rely on the depth of his bullpen to answer the call when necessary. Lost River, Lakeview, Bonanza and Hosanna will be the teams to look out for when they match up against the Cowboys. With games as high scoring as they were last season with both teams scoring under double digits five times, the ability to drive in runs will be key to the length of the season for North Lake and its ability to slide into the state playoffs.
