With classes back in session, it is time once again for homework, textbooks, and lessons. The joys of summer are gone, the work begins anew. It is also the fun part of school’s return, athletics. For many, summer ended well before the first school bell rang, sacrificing their last weeks of freedom to practice and prepare for the highs and lows that come with being a student-athlete. It is the camaraderie of teammates, the unbridled joy of victory, the long bus rides, the grind of practice and fatigue from a long season that make for an experience never to be forgotten for those participating. With football, volleyball, soccer and cross country taking place across Lake County, it is once again time to revel in the thrills that come with athletic competition. Excitement permeates for those competing, for the coaches, the families and friends and school faculty; everyone adorns their school colors to show their Honker, Cowboy and Bronco pride. Whether packing grandstands under the Friday night lights or lining a road in a remote wilderness for a cross country run, Lake County loves its high school sports and people go all out to show their support, traveling great distances to cheer on our student-athletes. Herein this 2014 fall sports preview is found complete schedules, rosters and extensive team previews for each school’s team, highlighting the past accomplishments and predicted performances to come over the fall 2014 sports season. From North Lake to Paisley to Lakeview, hear directly from the coaches to find out who are this year’s superstars - a must watch, where teams may land come playoff time, and the newcomers set to make headlines as the season progresses. – Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Sports Editor

Veteran Honker Volleyball Squad has Lofty Expectations By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Returning a wealth of riches with six seniors, three of which were allleague selections last year, has hopes and expectations high for a fruitful 2014 season for Lakeview High School varsity volleyball. Under first year Head Coach Suzy Larson and Asst. Coach Ann Crumrine, the team has an abundance of both talent and experience with aspirations of repeating as league champions and hosting a playoff round on their home court. Despite the loss of senior Rose Barry for the season to a severe hand injury, the group of girls leading the team have been playing together for years presenting a great familiarity on the court that can only come with experience. With talent, experience, and a great bond, for coaches it is all about keeping a positive emotional and mental approach to the game to maximize the Honkers’ potential. While it is Larson’s first year as head coach, she is no stranger to the roster, having coached JV and middle school teams teaching this same group for years. “I know what these

girls can do,” said Larson. “We know what they are capable of, we know their backgrounds, their families, so we can hit the ground running.” With all-league players Tori Crumrine, Delaney Hall and Amanda Arcularius on the court aided by a nice blend of returning players and talented newcomers, coaches have a quandary of trying to find enough playing time to go around for everyone. “I am trying to work girls in, but with so many seniors it can be tough,” admitted Larson. “At tournaments we’re going to get a lot of playing time, and while I’m sure the girls on our bench would love to play more, but their attitude and energy they bring to the team is great.” There’s a lot to like in the physical abilities of the team, Larson citing that they have excellent passers, quality servers, strong leadership through experience and confidence. While outside hitters Hall and Crumrine bring a dynamic level of talent to the court and familiarity in the game, it is aggressive play at the net where she hopes the team can develop a stronger attack over the course of the year.

Coach Ann Crumrine. Not pictured: Amanda Arcularius and Rose Barry. “I would like to see more effective kills,” said Larson. “We’re great defensively, but I don’t want to get so tired off of it from long rallies.” One newcomer playing a vital role on the court is setter Carly Larson, having been on varsity in previous years but in a backup role. Coach Larson has been impressed with the growth of the younger Larson’s game since being appointed to the starting role tasked with reading the court and distributing the ball efficiently, particularly in her ability to backset and dumps to catch teams off-guard. Devel-

oping confidence in Larson’s game in the setter role is a key aspect to how far the Honkers can go in 2014. Larson is not alone in that venture though, as sophomores Madisen Schreder and Claire Collins are being relied on heavily to contribute in the rotation as well. Most of all though, Larson wants to emphasize the fun of the game, not get caught up in wins or losses, but just enjoy the passion of the sport and thrill of playing alongside close friends. If the fun of the game is maintained, the wins will follow.

LHS Cross Country Looks to Make a Run By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Lakeview High School Cross Country Coach Bobbie Steninger believes that the 2014 team could be one of the strongest groups she has ever had, which is saying something considering Steninger enters her 52nd year of coaching at LHS. W i t h six seniors and plenty of returning athletes, including sophomore Lily (Sabin) Ta y l o r - t h e Steninger lone qualifier at the state championship from LHS last year-there should be great reason for optimism. It is the first time in several years that Steninger has had any seniors on the team, and with the work put in over the summer and the way they have challenged each other, she sees no reason not to aim high. Training the team over the summer at Cottonwood Meadows, the 6,200-foot elevation site of the opening meet of the season, the Lakeview Invitational, the hard work and newcomers on the team have brought out the best of each other through competition. It is also the first time in several years there are enough participants to form a complete boys team. There is crossover be-

tween track and field and cross country, many of the spring standout runners returning for a chance to run in the fall. Among those are Nick Wiebelhaus, Cody Castle, Lily Taylor, Jessica Theall, Tenysen Patzke and Karina Lee. Several of them made the 2014 state championships, including Steven Hedlund earning the 3A state title as a member of the 4x100 relay team. While returners have shown progress, it is the newcomers that have Steninger really excited. The boys team have added seniors Steven Hedlund and Cody Castle alongside freshmen Kyle Deiter and Jakeb Jaska. For the girls, freshmen Starla Rollf, Jessica “Pinkey” Lee and Alex Conley along with senior Aiyana Higdon have brought new energy. “We’ve picked up some pretty incredible kids,” said Steninger. “Steven (Hedlund) and Kyle (Deiter) can run right with Nick (Wiebelhaus), so Nick has gotten better because he has guys to challenge him. Alex (Conley) has been great, she can run right with Lily (Sabin). She has some asthmatic problems so sometimes has to drop back, but she is very talented and works hard.” Having so many seniors and cross country veterans helps a lot according to Steninger, especially with this group indicating

Not pictured: Eduardo Botello. that they all help each other out and push each other through some very tough workouts. “I’m real proud of this group of kids,” said Steninger. “They have a vision of being something beyond what they normally expect of themselves because they see the people gathered around them are making them stronger.” It won’t be easy making the state meet, Steninger explaining that the growth of the district to 16 teams limits the number of athletes qualifying either individually or as a team. It’s a tough season ahead with events like the Prefontaine Memorial, a 10,000-meter race in Coos Bay, and the Oxford Classic in Bend, which draws teams from Idaho, Utah and California, but she has high hopes for the team based on what they are capable of accomplishing. “I’d like to see us in the top two,” said Steninger. “Hopefully we have some kids that can go to state individually, both the boys and girls teams this year are really strong.”

Hopes high for young Honker squad By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner While the 2014 Lakeview High School football team may be short on experience with only three seniors, familiarity in the system implemented by second year head coach Rick Stupak has him setting lofty goals for the Honkers. Looking to improve on a 5-4 season in 2013 that saw them just barely miss out on the playoffs following an end of year loss to Illinois Valley, it is the returning players having a year under their belt in Stupak’s system that he hopes will lead to improvement. “Last year we did a lot of teaching because the system was new for everybody, now we know what we’re doing,” said Stupak. “Practice has been about knocking off rust rather than learning, it’s allowed us to focus more on nuanc-

es rather than teaching.” That time spent working on little things Stupak hopes will lead to great competition and maximum effort from his team, which will rely heavily on its few seniors to provide leadership. Primary concern is finding a way to replace last year’s large contingent of seniors, in particular all-state football and multisport star Lane Hadley. “Hadley was someone we wanted to move around and create matchup problems,” said Stupak. “This year we look to Logan Cockrell and Dylan Diedrich as guys who can fill that role. On offense we want to cause matchup problems and have playmakers that can stretch the field forcing defenses to defend the width of the field.” The team will rely heavily on junior running back Jace Frank, an imposing figure with solid football pedigree able to carry multiple defenders

who played extensively for varsity last fall in a backup role to Hadley. At quarterback will be junior Landen Lampman, who performed well in 2013 coming off the bench after senior quarterback Michael Cooney was injured mid-season. Lampman is a point guard for the LHS basketball team as well, and Stupak sees his role as being similar, distributing the ball and reading defenses to exploit weaknesses. “We don’t want to necessarily put the game all on Landen’s shoulders,” said Stupak. “We want to establish the run and take the pressure off, but he can be a playmaker for us and we want him to be comfortable in being our guy.” It isn’t just the players though that may see marked improvement through familiarity in the second year of the team’s philosophies, as Stupak indicated the coaches are working better as well.

“Last year was my first time as a head coach, and it was a mistake wanting to do everything,” he said. “The biggest growth for me is to let my assistants coach, after a year they know what they’re doing and do a great job, which allows us all to really focus on our roles. Everything’s been a lot smoother, I’m excited about our coaching staff.” While Stupak recognizes the youth on the team with 11 freshmen likely to fill roles, expectations remain high to compete hard, get better each week and make the playoffs. A new wildcard format in the state playoff system this year would have landed LHS in last year’s playoffs, and even with defending state champions Cascade Christian in the same division, Stupak likes his team’s shot this year. “We’re a very young team, but I like our chances whoever we go against.”

Young Soccer Program Looks for Growth in Third Year By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner While the sport of soccer is reaching unprecedented levels of popularity through AYSO programs, the World Cup, and more locally the ongoing construction of a new soccer facility in Lakeview; for the Lakeview High School girls soccer program now in its third year it’s a matter of continuing to grow. “This is the first year all of our incoming freshmen have previous soccer-playing experience,” said LHS Head Coach Beth Witham. “We’re finally starting to get kids who played in AYSO come up through the high school ranks.” Witham hopes that the early exposure to the sport and hard work during the season will lead to success. Starting as a club sport in 2012, last year was the first season as an official school sport with Witham

overseeing the Lady Honkers every year since its inception. Assisting her for the 2014 Honkers is Ciera Jones and Alfonso Campuzano, Jones working on conditioning while Capuzano focuses on teaching formations and strategy. Conditioning is one area where the Honkers hold a clear advantage, residing at such high altitude for arguably the most cardiovascular-intensive sport has its benefits when the team travels to lower elevations. “The girls are on turbo, we can run forever,” said Witham regarding games played closer to sea level. To Witham having success is all about progression, building upon the familiarity of the sport for her returning players and teaching fundamentals to newcomers to see the team develop their skills over the course of the season. Of the five freshmen joining the squad, Witham states that already Dani Dunn and Macey Hargis have turned heads with their play.

“Returning players have shown more confidence, they understand the game well and are taking initiative to help out younger kids get caught up,” said Jones. While Witham believes she has several girls that excel at placing the ball and have great one-on-one moves, it is understanding formations and reading the game that are areas in need of the most improvement. Helping with the familiarity are the two team captains, McKenna Albertson and Faith Witham. According to coaches both have shown an ability to keep up the pace, be supportive of teammates but willing to push as strong leaders. For coaches, they just want to see the team progress, learn and have fun. “They have the excitement, potential and a willingness to learn,” said Coach Witham. “We’re going to do nothing but improve, there’s no doubt about that.”

Not pictured: Marcus Harmon. By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Following a third place special district finish in 2013 earning a playoff spot and a senior-laden squad returning this year, expectations are high for Lakeview High School boys soccer to make a big push at a playoff run. Head Coach Jim Nicholl started boys soccer at LHS seven years ago as a volunteer, and still oversees the program as its lone coach today. With nine seniors on a 22-player roster, the fruits of his labor should pay off big time for the deep and talented Honkers. All but one of the seniors were starters last year, Marcus Harmon being the lone senior just joining the team this year. Many of them have been starters every year of high school after playing in AYSO as kids, so the team is not only deep and talented but very experienced and familiar with each other’s abilities. The Honkers have earned playoff spots the past two seasons, but with the amount of returning starters and seniors Nicholl envisions more than simply making it to the dance. “Our goal is to make a strong playoff run,” said Nicholl. “Not only make it to a playoff game, but win one. I want to see our guys compete and rise to the occasion.” Anchoring the team is goalie Simon Ballaine, a solid player who doesn’t make mistakes. Nicholl said he has never seen Ballaine concede a goal due to lack of focus, calling him a real strength of the team. Up front Nicholl also hopes to attack more, utilizing a pair of profound strikers with a knack for scoring in Connor Lysne and Cody Hamilton, both first team alldistrict selections last year. “Tactically I’m throwing caution to the wind this year and really pushing guys forward to get a stronger attack,” explained Nicholl. “We’ve been more defensive in the past, this year I want to push the ball up and give our attacking forwards more opportunities to score goals. We may concede some goals, but I want to put pressure

on the other team.” Adding to the Honkers abilities to catch opponents off-guard are two great factors in Lakeview’s favor, the altitude and pitch. Living and training at 5,000 feet has its advantages in a sport with as much of a cardiovascular strain as soccer, as is the unorthodox field utilized by the team, the LHS baseball field’s outfield. Set at an odd angle and barely large enough to meet minimum regulations, the combination of odd field, thin air, experienced roster and relentless attacking tactics is the formula to success for Nicholl. Looking to improve from last year, Nicholl wanted to see his returning players focus heavily on developing their non-dominant foot for striking. “There are short windows in soccer, sometimes half a step is all you get, if you can’t hit the ball with your weaker foot that scoring opportunity can be gone,” said Nicholl. “I’m really pleased to see some of the kids worked hard on developing that.” While tinkering with lineups and formations will continue through the early parts of the season, Nicholl is optimistic on the year’s outcome. “This is the biggest senior class I’ve had hands down, it’s a good year to make a push,” said Nicholl. “I want to win district with these kids.”

Paisley Volleyball Looks to Rebuild By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner One may call this year’s Paisley girls volleyball team “the Little Engine That Could” with their relatively small numbers and modest experience factoring in to the team’s personality. Assistant Coach Jon Jones is looking at the 2014 Paisley Broncos team and their upcoming year as a chance to rebuild. In the previous year, the Broncos had a fresh stock of seven seniors, but now are down to one, Priscilla Norris. However, there are four returning juniors who act as a strong backbone of the team. They are Alyssa Keyte, Alyssa Basurto, Krysta Colahan and Elizabeth Hyde. Jones said that these girls, who were sophomores last year, did not have much of chance to play full-time last year since the seniors made up the majority of the varsity team. With the strong absence of upperclassmen, these five girls will have to step-up to the net this year. Jones said they all show signs of quality volleyball players. The team began their conditioning all the way back to Aug. 11 and have only started volleyball practices on Aug. 18. With the disruption of fair festivities, which causes the start and stop of beginning the school year for Paisley, the team has not had adequate time to get in the rhythm of their practices. Jones said that they are focusing on the fundamentals of the sport above all else. “Volleyball is a simple game of bump, set, spike and trying to remember that,” Jones said. He has seen noticeable improvements over the time that they have practiced but notes that they still have a long way to go. Among the fundamentals that need to be

Volleyball season is just another way to keep the Paisley students busy, said Jones. He believes since Paisley School has such a small population of students, that the majority of the student body participates in sports to satisfy their social needs.

“The girls talk a great deal, but they work hard and have fun. That’s the important part,” Jones said. With only one meet under their belts, Jones knows what needs to be worked on and strengthened. As the team faced off with Hosanna Christian High School on Friday, Sept. 5 the Lady Broncos received baptism by fire, losing all of the three matches. Jones remarked that his team

didn’t compete that bad against their opponent remembering that Hosanna Christian has a reputation of being one of the strongest teams each year. Nevertheless, Jones is hoping to grow the team’s skills as much as possible this year to have even more success in the coming years. “They are a good group of kids and I’m looking for them to play hard,” he said.

Paisley Cross-Country Team Runs Local and Overseas It isn’t too often a team comes around with half the members homegrown and the other half is from foreign lands. Fortunately, this team is a cross-country team where the teammate support comes from encouraging rather than complex communication. The 2014 Paisley cross-country team is off and running with a strong eight-man team with coach Tony Cardoza at the helm. Doubling in size since last year, where the size was a mere four members, opens up further possibilities. Coach Cardoza said that this team is the most athletes he has had for a long while. Paisley native and senior, Camden Jones, is the only returning runner and is working hard to bring the team together as one as team captain. Exchange students range from all over the world including Mateus Falcaeo from Brazil, Boris Cadenes from Bolivia, Arber Shehu from Albania, and Ben Khwankhachonwong from Thailand. Cardoza said that the language barrier with these four athletes keeps the practices interesting and fun. Asst. Coach Kris Norris, said that while coaching form and strategy she sometimes needs a little assistance herself with communicating much of the necessary vocabulary from the team’s resident runners. The other Paisley-based runners are Jack Hyde, Ethan Sanders and Bryton Jones, all of who are juniors at Paisley. As the training gets more rigorous, Cardoza is finding that the team is building character faster than he would have thought. He said that when they began their training sessions, he thought Ben K. might struggle with the intensity of the sport. Though in the past week of practice, Cardoza hasn’t seen any signs of this at all. “I keep telling them that they don’t have to do this, but they keep showing up (to practices) and showing a change in attitude.” Cardoza said he would rather have the boys quit if they are not having fun while practicing and training. He affirms that distant running is a different kind of animal than other athletics and to be excellent in the sport is a difficult feat. Norris said that newcomer Hyde is proving to be a stand-out, not in only his running abilities but his outlook too. Norris said he has a great attitude and has a true desire to win, which gives him a competitive edge. “It’s not so much as the running they love, it’s the pain to push themselves that hard and endure that much,” Coach Cardoza said. Although the season is young, there have been a few benchmarks to grow from. On Saturday, Sept. 6, the team competed in their first meet of the year at the Cottonwood Meadows Invitational. Camden Jones came in sixthplace with a 24.13 running time. Jack Hyde was right behind him with a 24.27 time finishing in seventh. Bryton Jones finished in eleventh with a time of 27.26 with Boris Cardenes closely behind finishing in twelfth with a time of 27.56. The other runners were behind the 30-minute mark. Coach Cardoza said that since the first meet is alBy Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner

Coach Norris said that there will be improvements at every meet, but their main goal is doing well enough at districts to get a shot at state.

Cowgirls Look to the Future By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Losing seniors is always tough, losing eight of them on a stacked veteran roster is another matter. Tasked with doing just that is first year North Lake High School Head Coach Cheyanne Church, looking to keep the momentum from last year going in the wake of starting over with essentially a brand new roster of excited but inexperienced girls. To prep for the season Church opened up volleyball camp in August getting several weeks of quality workouts in before the Lake County fair drew its inevitable attention away for a few days. For the Cowgirls in 2014, success comes with experience, gaining familiarity with teammates and the court, finding a rhythm in the high-speed game of volleyball. “The girls are showing a lot of improvement,” said Church. “I was really happy we started the season with a tournament rather than a league game, because that way we could get lots of playing time and figure out our rotation and where I want girls to be.” Assisting Church with teaching the squad the fun-

This is especially true of North Lake’s returning players from last season, who have taken it upon themselves to educate newcomers to the game sharing knowledge and keys to success. “My returning players have progressed well,” said Church. “They are showing a lot more knowledge about where everyone is sup-

posed to be on the court, which helps me in that instead of having to direct everyone, they can direct their teammates. They are showing a lot of hustle, they want to play.” While the team has two seniors in Ruby Wilson and Jade Stockton, the two team captains leading the way are Maudey Vore and Matti Wilson. According to Church, both Vore and Wilson have taken it upon themselves to lead by example, encouraging teammates and communicating well. “The girls all really respect them and look up to them,” said Church. Literally looking up will find perhaps North Lake’s greatest asset, Kendra Murphy. The tall sophomore stands high above her teammates, a towering figure that presents problems at the net for opponents with her height both on the attack and in blocks. Church called Murphy the team’s best weapon, while noting that passing is an area she hopes the Cowgirls can develop more over the season. Overall, Church’s

goals for the team are both hopeful and achievable through teamwork. Staying healthy is also always a goal, one that unfortunately this year won’t be maintained, as sadly Raylee Hand broke her ankle in practices and will miss the season. Despite the loss of Hand, Church remains hopeful. “I want to finish third or fourth in our league, if not better,” said Church. “But mostly I want them to have fun, I want to see good attitudes throughout the entire season and mesh well as a team, and I want to see a team that leaves everything on the court and can start over fresh every game.”

Cowboys look to out scheme opponents By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner While lacking in depth, North Lake Cowboys football has no shortage of the unusual, implementing an offensive scheme like nothing ever seen before as a way to both neutralize and expose defensive weaknesses, and find a way to compete while dealing with a reduced roster. With barely enough bodies to fill out the field, even for the 8-man format football North Lake plays, North Lake High School Head Coach Joe Reid looked for a way to compete with other teams in the league. He found it by developing an offense that he hopes will both expose defenses, create open space for play-makers, and generate a lot of interest. “I’ve never seen any kind of offense like this,” said Reid. “I’ve done scouting for years and nobody has run a system like Reid this.” Best described as a double swinging gate approach similar to formations occasionally seen when college teams attempt two point conversions, the goal is to stretch the field sideline to sideline in the 8-man football format with linemen pairs outside creating one-onone match-ups where one missed tackle can result in a touchdown. It is the mad scientist high school football equivalent of arena football, one where at times he has even told players that if they weren’t sure what to do on the play to start doing jumping jacks when the ball is hiked, if nothing else it will confuse and distract the opponent. In part it is out of necessity, drawing talent

from a low population area with only eight total kids in the entire NLHS freshman class, there are only two new freshman players joining the team, and only two seniors to lead the way. One of those seniors has already made an impact though through his play and leadership, as Daniel Libolt exploded for 194 yards receiving and three touchdowns in the Cowboys opening game at Falls City. Looking to improve on last year’s 2-7 finish, a roster of only 11 healthy players means depth is a major factor, necessitating a way to find a means to stay competitive late into games while many of the players never leave the field, fatigue taking its toll. The short-handed team also means they are incapable of practicing against a full 8-man opposing team each day, adding to the hardships that must be overcome. “The guys learned a

lot last year, we did alright with what we had,” said Reid. “Our skill positions were so young, we had three seniors and they were all linemen, now we have a young line and veteran skill spots.” Even for the returning players Reid’s system is new, so coaches must work on educating while refining fundamentals. What the team lacks in sheer numbers though, according to Reid they more than make up for in approach and enthusiasm. “I’m really happy with their character, right now it’s just a lot of little mistakes we can clean up,” said Reid. “Talent-wise we do match up well with teams, but we don’t have a lot of subs for guys, so I hope we can stay competitive late into games and sneak out a few victories. While short on bodies and still learning the game, the Cowboys if nothing else should be a lot of fun
