Support Your School Sports As the weather turns from warm summer days to brisk fall mornings and the occasional meteorological curve ball, the spirit of competition returns anew. Lake County student-athletes have spent the summer training, drilling, preparing and anticipating the start of fall sports, relishing in the opportunity to push to achieve faster, stronger, higher. Representing their school and communities, athletes are once again fighting for their teammates and coaches in the name of school pride with aspirations of new personal bests, team accomplishments and the collective glory that comes with the thrill of victory. Here within these pages is contained previews of each team complete with rosters, schedules and interviews with coaches, as well as profiles of every senior to help every fan cheer their loudest and proudest. A great fan is a knowledgeable fan, one that knows the players, last year’s triumphs and heartbreaks and goals for this season. Everything needed to know to support the Broncos, Cowboys and Honkers is here. We’ll supply you with the knowledge, remembering to bring warm clothing and a portable chair for outdoor games is up to you. At North Lake it’s a particularly exciting time, as a new program has emerged, the Cowboys fielding a cross country team

in its inaugural season under Coach Scott Brown after launching a new track and field program last year. Meanwhile a large contingent of seniors have the Cowboys ready to achieve greatness on the gridiron under new Head Coach Dale Libolt, and an experienced volleyball squad is poised to make a splash. At Paisley, volleyball is on hiatus this year as many student-athletes instead chose to test their individual endurance, stamina and will in cross country, with Paisley hosting its own cross country invitational meet on Sept. 22. Once again fielding a combination of local athletes and international students bringing a new exuberance for athletic competition, the Broncos will be galloping this fall. At Lakeview, boys and girls soccer return plenty of experienced talent ready to make big strides on the field, albeit with a slight change in familiar coaches. Football adapts to life under a new coach, while soccer teams do, as well. Volleyball meanwhile must find a way to overcome the loss of a special group of seniors from last year while finding their own identity amidst a group of inexperienced but talented up-and-comers. Cross country appears ready to contend for a spot at the state championships with returning athletes and a collection of middle school runners that

has their coach excited for future prospects. Fair and the dog days of summer are officially over, it is time to lace ‘em up and stride to be greater tomorrow than today. Through hard work comes great achievement, sports being a microcosm for life teaching important life skills to always strive for improvement. There are grizzled veteran seniors, fresh-faced freshmen eager to make their mark, sophomores and juniors looking to apply the lessons learned from the previous year to assume new leadership roles, and new coaches taking over programs hoping to motivate athletes to achieve even greater heights. Embrace the spirit of competition and the pursuit of excellence. Cheer on your Honkers, Broncos and Cowboys, reveling in each victory or consoling and gracious in defeat, for at long last fall sports season is finally here.

Cowboys feature experienced team under new coach By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner

With eight seniors and experienced juniors and sophomores returning, the Cowboys might feel a burden to match expectations, but under new Head Coach Dale Libolt the focus remains one game at a time. Libolt, who had been an assistant coach for the previous four seasons, is not completely overhauling a system in which players are already familiar. But, with the aide of new assistant coach Devin Libolt Reece, the duo are tweaking some aspects to match the personnel while keeping what has worked in the past. Featuring an assortment of experienced linemen and a pair of senior quarterbacks, a stronger emphasis on the run this year Libolt hopes leads to positive results on the scoreboard.

Daniel (Libolt) did, so we’ll be more run oriented, with our size up front we should be able to do some good blocking.” The Cowboys feature two senior quarterbacks, Cameron McCord and Nathan Gilbert, each with extensive playing time and able to contribute in the running game as well. While the team only lost two seniors from last year, finding a new offensive identity is key to success in having to replace the 2014 team MVP and key offensive cog in Daniel Libolt. “By season’s end last year teams were doubling and triple-teaming Daniel because they knew throwing to him was what we did,” said Libolt. “Hopefully we can have a more balanced attack where teams can’t focus on one person. We’ve got a larger arsenal than just one weapon. We’ve got a couple of real powerful runners, if they stay healthy that’s something we haven’t had in the past. We have size for blocking and Cameron and Nathan can both throw the ball and know the plays, so if we put them together

with some powerful running backs it will give us some different looks.” Whereas depth was a serious concern last year, the Cowboys now gain the benefit of extensive playing time earned in the 2014 season with a seasoned veteran squad rich in seniors as well as a large influx of freshmen. While playing time may be limited for some of the freshmen as they learn the sport and grow into their bodies, they are nonetheless vital to the program this year and beyond. “Having a big senior group raises expectations, but I’m trying to get them to focus on just one game at a time,” said Libolt. “Last year many of them never left the field, now we have depth to rotate kids in and out, which will help. Still, a team can’t achieve greatness if we only work hard enough to achieve average. Thinking we’re going to be great is different than working to be great. We’re going to make mistakes, but we’re not going to let them drag us down, we’ll keep moving forward.”

North Lake grows, builds character By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner

After losing only two seniors, North Lake varsity volleyball returns most of their starting lineup, benefitting from years of experience with high expectations to advance further in the district championships. Focus is on developing character and attitude this season according to Head Coach Cheyanne Church, with many of the girls having at least one year of varsity playing experience already it allows room to grow strategically rather than solely build fundamentals. Stepping into more prominent roles in the wake of losing last year’s seniors, Ruby Wilson and Jade Stockton, Lindsey Underhill and Rebecca Harris will be called upon to take starting spots on the court. “I’m excited for this year because I have the same girls. We can carry over everything we did last year and work on perfecting it,” said

Church. One key change is at setter, where Raylee Hand assumes the starting role while last year’s setter Maudey Vore moves to outside hitter. Church explained that both tried setter at the start of camp, with one hitting better and one setting better, making the moves a natural fit. In the middle is junior Kendra Murphy, a second team all-league selection last year and a big focus of opponents as the first player to game plan against. In order for the season to match lofty expectations, Church knows the offense must come from players other than just Murphy. “Last year teams started to figure her out (Murphy), so I’ve been working on helping her hit the ball in different places and avoid blocks,” said Church. She believes that Murphy could be a first-team all-league selection this year with a productive season. “It’s also impor-

If we mix it up at the net, we can be successful.” The new season has brought not only improvement in understanding of the game and fundamentals, but a better positive attitude according to Church. An emphasis on being a family and cohesive unit is a primary goal this season, playing with passion for the game. Church believes that is key to overcome the one glaring weakness in the Cowgirls’ squad – a lack of depth. “We only have two reserve players this year. So, the mental game is huge because if we make a mistake we can’t let it get us down as I don’t have anyone I can sub in,” said Church. She will utilize two swing players Rachel Baker and Violet Wilson for both JV and varsity

as the only reserves. “We need to be able to shake off mistakes and stay focused, I believe if we practice like that it will carry over into the game.” As far as goals for the season, Church hopes the team can finish in the top three in districts and advance in the district tournament. Extra conditioning and weight lifting work in camp she hopes will pay off. The lack of depth

can be overcome if the Cowgirls are the better conditioned team on the court playing as hard in later sets as they do at the start. With eyes set to the future, Church sees a promising career ahead in particular for JV players Carlie Nelson and Harmonie Haff. Two seniors, Kelsey Bowers and Nickie Widenoja, will provide experienced leadership to the JV upand-coming Cowgirls.

Standing: Head Coach Scott Brown, Assistant Coach Danielle Brewer. Not pictured: Wyatt Waldron. By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner North Lake High School has added a new athletic program in 2015, establishing a cross country team for the first time under Head Coach Scott Brown, who last year launched a track and field team. While starting small, Brown is hopeful in the potential growth of his team now and in the coming years. “It’s nice to be able to start from scratch and really do things right from the start and learn from it,” said Brown. “We have two crossing over from track and field last year, but it’s a brand new program.” Nearly 10 students showed interest in participating in the fall sport, a great start indicating the potential for growth at North Lake, Brown indicating that students continue to inquire and show

interest. It is a build from the ground-up approach in every sense, but one that Brown happily takes on, being able to teach athletes proper technique and strategy without needing to eliminate any bad habits. Due to the fresh start there was no summer workout program to prepare for the season, and with breaks in practice due to the Lake County Fair, many of the participating athletes are just getting into shape. So far however Brown is enthused by the progress shown in only a short time. “Expectations for a first year program are silly,” said Brown. “I would like to see us be better tomorrow than today, the next race after that better than the previous one, and each time they learn something new to improve. Next year every kid will know what that first race is supposed to feel like. Every race will get easier. So far

they have done a great job of listening and learning how to do things right.” With a full slate schedule North Lake’s trial by fire will be a gaining experience, learning nuances of the sport with each competition such as taking short quick steps up hills to utilize quad muscles rather than hamstrings, or how

much hydration is needed to compete effectively. So far despite limited practice time, Brown is excited by what he sees. “We are going to keep getting better, we will compete all season, and make sure our technique is proper and keep progressing,” said Brown. “It’s nice to have students that listen

and want to work to get better.” The team includes two seniors, Megan Nelson and Wyatt Waldron, but all are new to the sport. Through this first season and into the future, Coach Brown has a plan for implementing long-term success through proper fundamentals, preparation and effort.

Fresh start for LHS girls soccer shows great promise for future By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner It was a difficult 2014 season for the Honkers soccer squad, many of the players gaining their first playing experience in what amounted to a single win season. Through offseason workouts and camps, and under new Head Coach Jim Nicholl, who led the LHS boys team for the past eight seasons, an experienced and motivated LHS team looks to shake up the status quo. “Since they were still learning, so much of the previous focus was on individual skills because kids had no fundamentals,” said Nicholl. “I’m trying to build on that, but also to get them to understand that their movements with and without the ball are critical to the team’s ability to have a tactical attack. The team is young but experienced, the biggest thing for these girls is learning how to win, how to close out a game.” Three seniors will be relied on heavily to provide leadership, but for a young team the Honkers have the

benefit of returning many athletes who suffered through the bumps and bruises of last year ready to now dish it back. Through a deeper understanding of the game, conditioning and experienced talent, Nicholl believes the team can surprise. “I’m not sure what to expect this year, but I’m trying to set goals,” said Nicholl. “For our girls I want to win a league game first, that’s a primary objective. With a team that won only one game the previous year opponents may come in thinking they’re going to walk all over us, but I think we’ll test some of these top dogs.” The Honkers feature a strong attack, led by senior Anna Fledderjohann at striker and junior Faith Witham as an attacking midfielder. Freshman Brette Graham adds a speed element along the flanks, and sophomore Macey Hargis is noted by Nicholl as being a crafty player who wins a lot of balls and attacks well. The defensive back is also an asset, with senior Dolli Alexander being a ballhawk and junior Ciara Lindsley possessing the strongest leg on the team, however goalie is a primary

concern with sophomore Dani Dunn assuming the starting role after playing only a half of one game in 2014. “We have speed up top, I might run into problems with formation if possession is lopsided against us then our girls that are effective at attacking right now won’t have many opportunities, but we’re very good on the attack,” said Nicholl. “The great thing is that these girls are very coachable, they want to learn and be better, they are working hard to that end, and I’m proud of their effort. I’m hoping we can become more cohesive as a group, and then I’ll try to push for some offseason work for these girls to keep growing. We have a lot of growth potential, my expectation is to continue to make progress and grow day by day.” Having instilled a winning attitude and with gained experience, the capacity is there for the Honkers to be the surprise of the 2015 fall soccer season. “We’re going to be out-matched in some games,” said Nicholl. “But we are going to walk away having played our very best game.”

LHS boys soccer seeks to continue hot streak By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner It’s a new year for Lakeview High School boys varsity soccer, and despite graduating nine seniors from last year’s team and performing under a new coach, the expectations remain high for the Honkers to return to the state playoffs for the third year in a row. Jay Glasmann takes over as the boys head coach after Jim Nicholl, who has coached the boys team for the past seven years, has switched to leading the girls varsity squad. It is a learning process for Glasmann who is in his first year coaching the sport, but a role he has happily embraced thanks to tremendous help from both Nicholl and Asst. Coach Jaricho Padilla, a graduate of the program. With plans to not fix what isn’t broken, Glasmann expects the Honkers to return to play-off form of the previous year thanks to a nice blend of returning experience and youthful exuberance, in particular from a large group of sophomores. Among the key returning players is senior goalkeeper Simon Ballaine, last year’s Special District

5 Goalkeeper of the Year. With some new faces along the defensive front Ballaine’s continued success in defending the net is a huge component in the Honkers’ ongoing success. Joining BalGlasmann laine in vital on-field roles are Dominic Leal and Connor Hamilton, the two primary forces in the Honkers attack, and senior Frank Perry helping to lock down the defense. Among newcomers, Glasmann anticipates great contributions from sophomores Bryce Crumrine and Juan Moreno, as well as freshman Axel Hernandez and senior Javier Badillo, who in previous years played football rather than soccer. Glasmann noted that the development of the AYSO youth soccer program is beginning to show dividends, with more incoming players to the program already familiar with technique and strategy. Despite the change in coaches Glasmann doesn’t anticipate much of a change in scheme, making tweaks but utilizing the previous year’s philosophies as a process to work towards.

“Our expectations haven’t changed, we still think we can be a playoff bound team this year,” said Glasmann. “They will take the top four, and I see us as being capable of being top three. We still have enough experience on the field, and we don’t want to end the streak. Depth is also a concern.” While Glasmann inherited a well-rounded, experienced team, there are areas of improvements being sought beyond shaking off early season rust. “We really need to improve our midfield possession passing,” said Glasmann. “We’ve got a solid defense and experienced guys up front. It’s going to be about getting from one side to the other and developing a transition game.” Seeking to match or exceed last year’s 7-6-1 finish with a place in the playoffs, it is hoped that with new leadership comes the same success as before. “I’m having a great time with these kids,” added Glasmann. “The nice thing is that the team has totally embraced the coaching change, they’re having a great time.”

LHS football looks to capitalize on senior squad By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Through the aches and pains of youngsters learning their craft last year comes a reinvigorated Lakeview High School football squad ready to cash in on the experience gained through 2014’s one win-season. In an odd twist of fate that lone victory came against La Pine, a team that was led by Rusty Zysett, Lakeview’s new head coach. With over 30 years of experience coaching multiple sports at Culver, Summit and La Pine High Schools, Zysett steps into familiar territory for a first year coach having spent years game planning against the Honkers. In Lakeview Zysett likes what he sees with his senior-laden squad to help lead the climb back to respectability in the Southern Cascade League. “Having coached at La Pine for many years, we always felt like Lakeview always had tough, big, athletic kids compared to what we had,” said Zysett. “We need to parlay that into success and be a threat every year in our league.” With nine seniors ready to lead the way, Zysett wants to improve on last year’s results with an emphasis on establishing a winning culture

rather than focus on the scoreboard. “I want us to play hard every play,” said Zysett. “Winning is a process and it doesn’t happen overnight. What we’re focusing on is our effort to improve each week.” To help achieve that, Zysett is doing his best to keep things familiar. Retaining assistant coaches Bret Prock and Mark Louie while adding Dylan Sullivan, who coached with Zysett at La Pine, as a secondary and WR coach, the emphasis is on maintaining what has worked before. Zysett is leaving the defense the same, and while installing a different kind of spread system than previously used it is one he said is similar in terminology and approach, thereby limiting the learning curve. “We’re not reinventing the wheel,” said Zysett. “I’m happy with how hard these kids are willing to work, want to play, and are quick studies. Having Coach Prock and Louie on staff has been huge because they know the kids.” Key players returning include senior quarterback Landen Lampman, who had an injury-shortened season last year but now returns healthy and ready to lead, and senior running back Jace Frank, who Zysett described as a workhorse. Players

voted on team captains, declaring seniors Eddie Murrieta and Logan Cockrell to be the voices of the team. One player Zysett hopes to use as a wildcard more is senior Dylan Deidrich, who filled in admirably last year for Lampman at quarterback through the second half of the season, and Zysett believes can be a handful for defenses. Players looking to make an impact include senior Grant Steward at wide receiver and safety after not playing as a junior, sophomore David Arcularius at safety and senior Payton Jasper in the trenches. One area where Zysett really likes his team is on the offensive line. With returning all-league selection Michael McCully bringing a strong push inside, Zysett sees a lot of athleticism along the front five. “We’re never slow on pulls and we don’t have our backs waiting, we have a real advantage there,” said Zysett. “For us we don’t have one guy that can go out and win a game by themselves, but if they play together they can be very good.” Under a new coach looking to expand on the good things already established and tweak problem areas, the progression of a now very experienced Honkers squad points towards a bright future for LHS football.

Honker harriers ÀHOG \RXQJ EXW WDOHQWHG JURXS By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner While only two seniors are on the roster, Daren Cuff and Tenysen Patzke, the 2015 season brings great promise for the Lakeview High School cross country team, hoping to finish in the top two in their district to earn a place at the state championships. That lofty goal is a difficult but achievable one. With 18 teams in the league and only two earning a place in the championships, it will take tremendous ef-

forts throughout the year to succeed, but thankfully effort is something that Head Coach B o b b i e Steninger sees in Steninger abundance with her team. “I can ask any one of our kids to do something and they go after it,

We have a young team, but when it comes to leadership all of our kids do it.” Steninger is thrilled with both the newcomers and returning athletes this season, seeing tremendous progress in runners such as sophomore Kyle Deiter and junior Lily Taylor leading the pack for the boys and girls squads, and pleasantly surprised by newcomers Dylan Dunn and Grady Davidson in particular. “Kyle without question was ready, coming into the season Kyle came in ready to go,” said Steninger. “Lily is experienced, and Alex (Conley) is doing great on the girls side. I think Grady as a freshman is going to be a great runner, and Dylan has been the most surprising. Also Dawson Pointere, every day I get a little more excited over his progress.” While perhaps short

in the number of participants that Steninger would like for her varsity group, there is no shortage of enthusiasm for the sport. While some chose to compete in soccer instead, those present have shown a dedication to the sport and a drive to improve that has Steninger excited for the season. Yet it is the middle school group that has Steninger absolutely thrilled at the future prospects for cross country. “I couldn’t be more excited about our junior group coming up,” said Steninger. “Every day more and more want to be here. These junior runners are incredible, the future

looks bright.” Steninger sticks to a philosophy with her runners, trying to develop throughout the season to peak by year’s end. By following the system and with a well-balanced mix of fresh talent and seasoned veterans, a shot at the state championships is within grasp. “I like to build throughout the season, I don’t necessarily want to be on top at the start,” said Steninger. “By season’s end is where I want them to be doing their best. Early races are important, because they tell us where they are at, but it’s what they do at the end that’s important.”

Lakeview High School girls cross country gets off the starting line quick at the Lakeview Invitational Meet on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Lake County Examiner Fall Sports Preview 2015 — Page 21

Opportunities for growth with young Honkers volleyball squad By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Last year’s senior squad accomplished great things for Lakeview High School volleyball, but they are now gone, and with them go the burden of great expectations. With a youthful explosion in numbers for varsity and junior varsity teams, the 2015 campaign is a focus on growth and positive attitude with aspirations to continue to strive for the league playoffs. It is the second year at the helm for Head Coach Suzy Larson and Asst. Coach Ann Crumrine, who are joined by Kassi Conditt leading the JV team. While a number of returning players will be relied on heavily for leadership, Larson recognizes that it is a completely different team with new roles and expectations. “Nobody is going to expect anything out of us this year because of all that we lost,” said Larson. “I think we can get to the league playoffs. Looking at our team I see success in the growth we will have from the start to the finish of the season. It’s about having a positive attitude, winning with our hearts and brains

rather than always looking at the scoreboard.” Only one consistent starter from last year’s team returns, senior setter Carly Larson, with junior outside hitter Madisen Schreder gaining extensive playing time last season as well. With so many seniors last year many players took more specialty roles on the court, with their place on the team now vastly expanded as full-time starters. Larson anticipates seniors Baylee Hamrick, Hannah Ramsey as well as junior Claire Collins, who takes over the starting libero position, as playing huge roles both on the court and off of it. Sophomore McKenzie Johnston, the tallest player on the team, will also take on a vital role alongside Schreder in being the primary blockers. With the weight of heavy expectations lifted, it is all about positive attitude and playing for the passion of the game, something that Larson sees developing already in the early games of the season. “I’m relying on Carly and the other seniors to provide leadership, and they are stepping up, they have great attitudes,” said Larson. “They offer a lot of positivity and humor, that’s their strength is in teaching

Coach Ann Crumrine. our younger players how to have fun.” With the large senior class now gone, there is great opportunity for new players to step up and gain experience whereas before many may have been relegated to spot duty. Where many might think inexperience, Larson sees great opportunity for growth. “I’m very lucky in that my coaches Ann (Crumrine) and Kassi (Conditt) are both very strong in fundamentals,” said Larson. “We may not have the

heaviest hitters, but we’re working on developing players. When there is such a strong class ahead people don’t always get to grow to their full potential, but now there is opportunity galore to do that.” It is in the future that Larson sees great potential in players such as Madison Steward and Alex Robinson, both of whom will play JV and varsity. With such an influx of freshmen and sophomores, Larson is also reliant on returning players junior Carmen Arce

and sophomore Iris Herrera to help lead the JV team and assist in developing the talent around them. While Larson believes that wins will come with growth and patience, success in 2015 is more about positivity through and playing with passion. “I want it to be where if the audience didn’t see the score they would have no idea who is winning, because we have great attitudes throughout whether we’re up or down in the game.”

Paisley, putting “team” back in cross-country When thinking of crosscountry, one doesn’t imagine it as a “team sport.” Paisley’s cross-country is looking to break that thinking by practicing, traveling and competing as a single unit this year. Coach Tony Cardoza said that the word “team” means something this year, adding that there are no “hot shots” or “attitudes,” and everyone wants every teammate to do their best. “It’s a good team,” said Coach Cardoza, “everybody is encouraging everybody else.” This season’s team is even more diverse than previous years. Last year’s team had local and international boys running about the region. Now, there is an addition of two community girl runners who look to add depth to the Paisley team. Senior Krysta Colahan and sophomore Ashley O’Leary are the girls who will run with the team this year. O’Leary did astoundingly well in the 3,000-meter race for the Paisley track and field team last year, winning districts in that event. “She’s cut from the same O’Leary cloth with their work ethic and strength,” said Coach Cardoza, adding that Colahan is also looking phenomenal and enjoying the practices. On the boys’ front, senior Cody Cooper looks to bring experience to the team’s roster as well as leadership. Sophomores Jack Hyde and Bryton Jones are back running for the team, both as fourth-year runners previously competing for the middle school team. As with every year, foreign exchange students take part in the sport, most of them not fully understanding the basics until taught to them, though they “show a very good attitude,” said Coach Cardoza. Cevdat Izi from Turkey, Alejandro “Alex” Sada Prendies from Mexico, Jiriaka Galantic from the Czech Republic, Hang “Henry” Lei from China, Sono Willbrand from Germany and Dominic Bang from South Korea will help fill out the numbers for the always undersized team. Coach Cardoza said that he has his eye especially on Willbrand who is a “picture perfect runner,” who only has the sky as the limit. There isn’t much of a communication barrier this year, said Coach Cardoza, as they learn by watching the examples of the more experienced runners. Helping coach the squad is Kris Norris. Previously, Norris only helped out at practices, but this year she will take on an expanded role as a full-time assistant coach. Coach Cardoza said that Norris brings success she had By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner

During the weeks of practices so far, the team has been concentrating on quality running rather than quantity that includes 400-600 meter runs, conservation jogs for a mile and a half, and then taking a ride up to nearby mountains to run down back into Paisley. The coaches also focus on pace work, which is running based on how they feel to keep a consistent speed. This technique was learned at Camp Cottonwood running camp put on by Lakeview High School coach Bobbi Steninger. “It’s really nice because the kids can tell when their foot strikes per minute,” said Coach Cardoza when speaking of the techniques learned. With the good amount of practices behind them, the team picked up “Fast and Free” as a mantra that gets all of them inspired when their shoes hit the trail.
