Ultimate Frisbee a fun family activity for all By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner It was roughly a year ago when Erik Larson decided it was time to gauge interest in organizing a fun outdoor game of ultimate frisbee among kids at the Lakeview Faith Center on Sunday afternoons after church. In the time since the weekly games have grown in popularity, providing a great way to enjoy the spring weather among family and friends. Scheduled every Sunday at the Lakeview High School Daly Field with games usually starting around 2 p.m., the pick-up games are open to anyone who wants to participate, with the field from sideline to sideline being used among evenly divided teams and games typically scored as first to 12. For Larson, who grew up in Colorado playing ultimate frisbee often among friends, it was a way to get the competitive juices flowing again and interact with people in the community he may not otherwise get to in his normal line of work. “Ultimate frisbee is great exercise and it’s easy, there’s no equipment needed beyond a frisbee, and anyone can play,” said Larson. “People don’t have to be athletic, it’s easy to organize and everyone can have fun.” When weather cooperates the games are usually a go, Larson stating that on average they get 8-12 people out to participate, pro-

Erik Larson has coordinated ultimate Frisbee games at the Lakeview High School football field for the past year as a fun outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. The games are open to anyone to participate, typically starting at 2 p.m. every Sunday. viding a fun group event during Sunday afternoons when often there is nothing else to do around town. When numbers permit, the more skilled players are matched up for a more competitive game, but usually the event is kept very low key for all ages to play evenly. Since March, games have been organized almost every Sunday, with plans to continue throughout the summer. If there is enough interest, Larson wants to consider starting a league or joining an already existing ultimate frisbee league based out of Bend or Klamath Falls

for the more avid players to participate. Regardless of being a seasoned pro or a first-timer though, the whole point is to provide a fun and simple game, interacting with others in the community in a relaxed environment. “Games like baseball require a lot of people and coordination to get going, but we can have a game with as few as four people,” said Larson. “It’s just a simple, easy way for people to get out of the house and have fun.” For weekly ultimate frisbee game updates contact Erik Larson on Facebook.

Fishing opportunities across Lake County By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner Spring is the perfect time for outdoors recreation, especially around beautiful Lake County and even more especially around its many streams stocked with favorite catch-ables. Though the county is in its third straight year of drought, making fishing opportunities less than ideal, there are still many areas where fish can be in abundance. According to Mike Harrington, fish biologist for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), drought causes many water bodies to be depleted of the life giving source, particularity around the Warner Basin. On the more hopeful side, the lesser amount of snow in the high points of the mountains makes it so fishing is accessible even earlier than in previous years. Harrington says that around Lofton Reservoir and Cottonwood Lake there will be a healthy amount of rainbow trout that locals can have their hands on should they be lucky enough to catch one. He also adds that a lot of residents enjoy Hart Lake for the crappie, but this season isn’t shaping up to be a good one for their stock. Fishers shouldn’t lose out hope just yet on significant late spring snow that would do an immense amount of good for the surrounding lakes, rivers and streams. Other perspectives places for a day’s worth of fishing are at Ana Reservoir, Ana River, Deep Creek and Twentymile River that affords great flyfishing opportunities for hybrid striped bass. Harrington also recommends while you’re out fishing the Ana Reservoir or the Ana River, try stopping by

Summer Lake to try your luck there. Veteran fly-fishers have their own trusty set-ups, but for the novice, Harrington says that for starters a trusty Blue Fox lure will do its job as well a Wooly Bugger. For families who go out for the fun of the trip can also resort to the traditional worm on a hook or purchase their favorite color of power bait. Before the avid fisherman gets on their waterproof waders or fixes the line to their pole, they must first acquire their own annual fishing license that are available through ODFW’s website at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ online_license_sales/. There are various licenses available such as juvenile angling licenses or for those over 65 years old and have lived in Oregon for over five years. For more information, contact ODFW’s new fish biologist Trevor Watson at 541-947-2950.

Decking Spring-time recreation By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner There’s nothing like a cold, refreshing breath of air in the morning or a midafternoon barbecue in the springtime. Both of these little fulfilling experiences are only elevated when they are done on a well-crafted deck made by bare hands. Most everyone has the vision of creating a custom deck to complement the home, but some don’t have the slightest idea of where to begin. Lakeview’s ProBuild team that specializes in decking, Frank Manibusan and Tom Burkholder, knows exactly what makes a good deck, where to start and about how much it will cost. There are two options of material to use, which are cedar planks and composite. Cedar planks are by far the cheaper of the options, about half the price of composite. While cheaper, it takes much more maintenance and attention to upkeep such as the routine sanding and staining. Composite is much more expensive but doesn’t require much maintenance since the boards don’t crack, split, warp or have slivers. This material is made out of wood-plastic composites with an outside texture and color that resembles wood and is easy to clean with a hose. Building a custom deck won’t necessarily break the bank either, as a 10-foot by 10-foot cedar plank deck can run anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000. Anything bigger or more extravagant than that… well there really is no limit a customer can

shell out. ProBuild staff can help price if a customer brings in a basic concept and even the minimal amount of the sketching. “Anyone can build a deck, it just depends on how fancy you want it built,” said Manibusan. For those who have little to no experience in carpentry, the internet is the perfect place to turn for online tutorials or just to get an idea of where and how to begin the project. But for those who have the money and don’t wish to invest the energy into construction themselves are best left to hire a contractor who can do it with much less frustration. Manibusan calls the time spent on a well-constructed deck “a summer vacation in your own backyard.” Along with decking options, ProBuild has many other materials that can satisfy outdoor needs such as fencing, building materials and general household fixer-uppers. Pro-Build is located at 1303 N. 4th St. Lakeview, 541-947-4071.

Spring gardening

Starts Now

By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner With the change of weather towards a more spring-like sunny outcome, thoughts inevitably drift towards gardening and growing plants and vegetables during the short grow season in Lake County. However Bloomers Country Nursery in Lakeview cautions to be patient, not to start planting too early while frosty nights could still ruin crops. Different plants have differing tolerance to cold weather, so it’s important to start planning for more tolerant crops in April and waiting until Memorial Day typically for those more sensitive to cold according to Darci McKay of Bloomers, who operates a greenhouse and provides seedlings and other plants. While the greenhouse has many items ready to plant, McKay is quick to remind that despite the mild winter it is best to patiently wait for frost to pass before getting started, otherwise be prepared to possibly have to buy the same thing twice. “Normally we tell people not to plant annual bedding plants until Memorial Day, but with this spring it’s possible to plant a little earlier but be cautious of the weather,” said McKay. “Potatoes, onions,

Darci McKay of Bloomers Country Nursery has plenty of tips and tricks to get your garden growing on time and bountiful. early cool season crops can start going out soon, but tender warm weather vegetables like melons, cucumbers, tomatoes and corn really should wait until May.” To work around the often deceptive weather patterns, McKay said many choose to start seeds indoors such as squash, peppers and tomatoes or begin hanging baskets in the greenhouse, so that when the weather finally does turn they’re ready to go outside. Despite the high altitude, McKay indicated that most shortseason variety fruits and vegetables are possible in Lake County. Bloomers carries fruit trees such as

apples, pears and cherries which are all possible to grow here. “We try to be careful, any starts we grow in the greenhouse will be good for the local environment,” said McKay, adding that Bloomers only carries GMO-free products. With onions and potatoes already in and berries set to arrive by the end of April, spring is a time to get the garden started once more, just plan ahead a little bit in knowing not just what to plant, but when as well. For more information contact Bloomers Country Nursery at 541-947-5581 or stop by at 921 N. 4th St. in Lakeview.
