Fall sports signal start of a new school year After a lengthy summer of swim teams, vacations, jobs and ranch work, students have all returned to classrooms for the fall, and to Lake County’s many fields and courts to compete for individual and team glory. The start of the 2016-17 school year following Lake County Fair and Round-Up signals a new focus back to the football field, volleyball court, soccer field and cross country courses to revel in the last snippets of summer weather. For the 27 total seniors across Lake County’s three high schools it is one final shot at achieving athletic goals, some of which have been aspired towards for all of their lives. A few may continue into college competition, but for nearly all, their high school senior year will be the last time many compete in organized athletics. For others it is their first chance to either learn a new sport, or finally obtain their moment in the spotlight after patiently waiting their turn while improving their skill sets on junior varsity teams, now thrust into varsity starting roles. There are new coaches in place offering different perspectives and philosophies, helping to mold young minds and bodies not just to achieve in competition but in life as well. The year marks the second season of an organized cheerleader squad at Lakeview High School since the program was revived after almost a decade of dormancy, and the triumphant return of volleyball in Paisley after a year of inactivity. It signals the second year of a cross country program at North Lake, and for other well-established and senior-laden teams the pressure is on to reach the lofty personal expectations to achieve post-season goals and league honors.

It is a time to revel in the efforts of each community’s youth to fight in their name of their hometown, teammates, fellow students and coaches. Positive community fan support in Lake County is unparalleled, helping provide the extra energy boost needed when the chips are down and the pressure is on. The events to commence over the next several months will generate stories told and retold for decades to come, each and every competitor giving their all through physical and mental tolls to compete as hard as they can as a proud Honker, Cowboy or Bronco. Whether football, soccer, volleyball, cross country, or providing positive support as cheerleaders, Lake County’s 14 teams have worked hard to prepare for the events occurring over the next several months. Contained within are team photos, rosters, schedules, spotlights of seniors, coach interviews and team previews to assure that every Broncos, Cowboys and Honkers fan is fully prepared and in the know for every game. Read on, and cheer loud and proud, as Lake County’s next generation set their sights on athletic glory.

Veteran Honkers have lofty personal expectations By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Led by a quintet of seniors and plenty of experienced returners, Lakeview High School varsity volleyball has high personal expectations for the 2016 campaign, as long as they have fun along the way. Led by first-year Head Coach Liz Helling, the Honkers return a talented and experienced squad that Helling hopes can compete and remain focused throughout the season regardless of the final standings. Several veterans are trying new positions, including the move of senior Claire Collins from libero to outside hitter, allowing senior Isabel Herrera to take on the defensive specialty role. Gone from last year’s team is starting setter Carly Larson, a multi-year starter at the key position equivalent to a quarterback or point guard, as was Larson’s backup in Hannah Ramsey. Stepping into that court leader role is junior Lizzy Ramsey, who has little experience in the setup role but has shown improvement in practice. “We are starting fresh since Lizzy didn’t set last year, her sister did,” said Helling. “But this group of girls have been playing to-

So far everyone has been really accepting of new roles.” It was trial by fire for the new-look Honkers, a scheduling quirk allowing two non-league games prior to the Lake County Fair, the team playing with

barely a week of practice. Those matches showed summer rust, but returning experience is an asset Helling believes is a net gain to get games early. “We were limited on practice time before our first match, so having a strong junior and senior base team that played extensively in varsity meant we can get into strategy and running our offense early because they already know the fundamentals,” said Helling. “Their atKURT LIEDTKE/ Lake County Examiner

titude is great, they give everything. I can lean on them, they have great positivity, nobody is getting down on themselves.” With 10 juniors and seniors on the varsity roster,

it is a team that should get back into mid-season form sooner rather than later with plenty of varsity experience. However, Helling is quick to look towards personal goals rather than expectations of a playoff run. “With this group returning there’s an expectation to do well,” said Helling. “But really all I can say is we’re going to try our best, and win or lose as long as they’re happy with the outcome and effort that’s all I can ask. I want them to believe they’re capable of reaching the playoffs, I want to take league, and for them to be ready to face tougher teams. Ultimately my hope is that when the seniors play their last game they left everything on the court and held nothing back.” The junior varsity team has seven sophomores, many with previous JV experience, lending to a bright future once current seniors move on. “It’s a great group, they’re all really hard workers,” added Helling. “They need the support of our community, I know that really helps, and we need room to grow as a team. I think we can excel.”

Cross Country returns state qualifiers, youngsters By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Returning two state championship qualifiers from last season in senior Lily Taylor and junior Kyle Deiter, alongside a bevy of talented runners seeking their place in the record books as well, hopes are high for Lakeview High School Cross Country. “We have some very talented runners, some new additions that should help, and the potential to maybe get the boys team to state,” said LHS Head Coach Bobbie Steninger. With only four high school girls the squad doesn’t have the necessary numbers to qualify a team for state at a five-member minimum, but individuals could still go if they finish in the top five at districts. That is no easy task however, as Lakeview’s special district is comprised of 16 teams, the largest in the state of Oregon. To prepare for the grueling season ahead, each s u m m e r Steninger takes the team to a Steninger s u m m e r camp at Camp Cottonwood for training and team bonding, an experience she said went great this year. The time

Not pictured: Jakeb Jaska. spent at Cottonwood is advantageous, as it is also the site of the Lakeview Invitational, the opening event of the season, and by far the most difficult course the team will face all year. “At 6,200 feet and a lot of hills, they will start out the year with the toughest course they will face,” said Steninger. “If they can run at Cottonwood they can run anywhere.” Added to the schedule this year is also a trip to the Bob Firman Invitational in Eagle, Idaho, a huge cross country meet drawing over 3,500 runners from across

the country. Steninger will try to take everyone to experience that to show they can compete with some of the best around. The team is led by Deiter, who placed 41st at state last year, and Taylor, who finished 21st at state, though several are seeking their time in the spotlight as well. Junior Dylan Dunn made tremendous strides during last spring’s track season as a distance runner, something Steninger believes will carry over well into cross country. and Rowdy Gerber as well as newcomers Loagen Antle, Austin Mobley and Paul Lindsley. Junior Jakeb Jaska will compete with the team as well through September. For the girls team it is Steninger’s biggest disappointment that they couldn’t recruit a fifth member to fill out a full team, but the quartet competing she believes will turn heads. In addition to Taylor are juniors Jessica Lee and Starla Rollf and sophomore Melanie Theall, all of whom have either competed in cross coun-

try previously or distance events in track and field. Helping round out the team alongside Steninger is assistant coach Caleb Howard, who has great familiarity with the crew from his time volunteering with the track team and as an avid participant in the Mile High Striders running club which draws many of the team members to monthly outdoor fun runs. Steninger said she couldn’t ask for better help. It isn’t just the team today, but an eye towards the future that has Steninger excited. A large contingent of talented middle schoolers will also compete, almost all of whom are active in Mile High Striders. “Alex Turner right now could run with the high schoolers,” said Steninger. “The girls we have to wait a year since they are in seventh grade, but when they come up they are going to make a big splash.” Steninger targeted a goal for the year as a team of finishing near the top of their district, while each runner has personal goals of improving times and tweaking fundamentals. Above all, Steninger seeks only to see improvement and effort from everyone. “They’re a lot of fun and they work hard,” added Steninger. “I think it will be a fun team to work with all season long.”

Senior Spotlight

Claire Collins

Claire Collins is the daughter of Jay and Kristin Collins. She has two siblings, Davis and Bailey. Collins wears #4 and plays softball in addition to volleyball for the Honkers. Last year she excelled as the team’s starting libero, but as a senior has transitioned to an outside hitter and defensive specialist. She has previously earned all-league second team honors as a defensive specialist as well as earning all-Southern Cascade League honors in softball. She loves the competition of athletics and being part of a team. As a student, Collins has been a member of student council for three years and is in National Honor Society with a 3.97 grade point average. She intends to attend BYU after graduation.

Quinn Roseberry Quinn Louise Michelle Roseberry is the daughter of Garrett and Stefani Roseberry. She has two siblings, Christian and Lane. Her nickname is “Q.” Roseberry is a starting hitter and defensive specialist for the Honkers. She also competes for the LHS ski team and track and field team, where she has reached the state finals in both sports. As a student Roseberry has participated in student council for the past six years and is also active in Future Farmers of America (FFA). After graduating from Lakeview High School she plans to attend either Montana State University or Texas A&M.

Alaina Cloer

Alaina Marie Cloer is the daughter of Ken and Christine Cloer. She wears #7 and plays middle blocker for Lakeview. At 5’9” she is one of the taller players for the Honkers. In addition to volleyball she also participates on the LHS track and field team. Cloer is a member of National Honor Society and maintains a 3.8 grade point average. She enjoys working together as a family as the best aspect of volleyball, while she looks up to Megan Reynolds as a volleyball player because of Reynolds’ similar stature and abilities. After graduation she hopes to become an elementary school teacher.

Lily Taylor is the daughter of Drew and Niki Taylor. She has three sibings; Scarlett, Reed and Claire. Lily’s nickname is Twiglet. Taylor has competed for the LHS track and field and cross country teams for all four years of high school. Last year she was one of two LHS qualifiers for the state cross country meet, earning 21st overall. She has also qualified for the state championships in track and field as a distance runner. She looks up to her coaches Bobbie Steninger and Caleb Howard, while noting her favorite part of running is racing against others and trying to beat her best times. She is a member of student council and National Honor Society and has been named to the honor roll while maintaining a 3.82 grade point average. After graduating she plans to attend either Western Oregon University or Montana State.

Kamaryn Schneider

Alyssa Ruth Brown is the daughter of Aemie Woolen and James Brown. She has two siblings, Ashley and Anna. It is Alyssa Brown’s second year on the Lakeview High School Cheerleading team. She also is active in the LHS band. She enjoys the sense of family that comes with being a part of the cheer team. After graduation Brown plans to attend Eastern Oregon University.

Madisen Kathleen Schreder is the daughter of Pete and Marci Schreder. She has one brother, Pierce. Her nickname is “Mad.” At 5’9” Schreder is one of the taller players on the Honkers volleyball squad, utilizing her height as a middle hitter and one the team’s best blockers. She also competes for the LHS ski and track and field teams, where she has reached state in both including a second place finish in 3A girls 100-meter hurdles as a junior. She loves the challenge of athletics, and looks up to her coaches as a profound positive influence in her life. As a student she has been a finalist for the Eri Cup for the last three years while active in National Honor Society, Future Farmers of America (FFA) and her youth group. After graduation Schreder plans to attend either Montana State University or Boise State University to study elementary education.

Cheer squad returns to raise school spirit By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Last year’s triumphant return of the Lakeview High School cheerleading team after decades of dormancy was a revelation on game days, adding to the atmosphere and enthusiastic crowd support at football and basketball games as well as school assemblies. This year the program looks to expand its role in its sophomore campaign as a living representation of Honker pride. Under new coaches Sherrie and Resha Coggswell, the cheer team hopes to build on last year’s work, adding to the repertoire while participating in more school activities and athletics. The team features two seniors, Alyssa Brown and Kamaryn Schneider, along with six veterans from last year’s spirit squad. Two new participants join the team this year, Jordan Warner

and Jewelle Elizarraras, who along with the veterans are quickly learning new cheers and routines in preparation for a busy fall. “We’re going to hopefully be able to do more stunting and tumbling for assemblies and halftime shows,” said Sherrie Coggswell. “We have changed a lot of the cheers, and right now it’s a matter of shaking off the rust and re-learning everything again. We’ve brought in new cheers and changed some old ones.” Unlike last year when football and basketball were the primary focus, this season under the encouragement of LHS Athletic Dir. Rusty Zysett the team will lend their support to all sports. While football and basketball remain a mainstay for the cheer squad, the team plans to show their support at one sport each week, trying to cover all the bases by spurring support from the sidelines for soccer, wrestling,

volleyball and more. “They are going to be dressing up for special days at school, Rusty (Zysett) sees the cheerleaders as a support structure and the spirit of the school,” said Resha Coggswell. “We’re doing our best to get them involved as much as they can for homecoming and creating game signs and being involved in the

crowd for sports and school activities. Last year was so much of a learning experience, I think this year will run better. We’ve changed things to make it easier on them how we start and call out cheers.” With plans for more dance and tumbling, new cheers, more interaction and always showing their school spirit, the LHS

cheerleaders return in a supportive role to help guide the Honkers to victory, while having fun throughout. “They’ve really come together and are working together well as a team,” added Sherrie Coggswell. “They’re all very supportive and we want it to be like a family. We’re a cheer family.”

Second year in system lets new leaders emerge By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner It is a new look for Lakeview High School varsity football, having to replace a senior class from last year including key players earning all-state accolades, but a group of new leaders has emerged. It is the second year under LHS Head Coach Rusty Zysett, who has been pleased with how quickly his returning players have dusted off the rust and acclimated to the system. Verbiage and play calls are more familiar in year two, allowing a deeper implementation of the playbook from last year. While difficult to replace so much senior leadership, Zysett is pleased with last year’s junior varsity athletes stepping up and returning varsity players. There are players at new positions, and some new faces as well, such as senior David Arcularius taking over as the starting running back after playing wide receiver last year. Also moving is Noah Steward, a tight end in 2015 earning all-league accolades, who now steps in at wideout, and a new addition to the team in senior Derrick Dunn, a deep threat wide receiver and the team’s kicker after playing soccer for the past three seasons. “It’s about kids stepping up and getting their turn to play, and I’m always surprised by how they do,” said Zysett. “I don’t know if you can replace good kids, but you have others step up and become good. In some of those positions with kids coming up we’re better than last year.” Gone from last year is star running back Jace Frank, the 3A all-state first team selection, meaning that LHS will take a more balanced offensive approach without a battering ram running back like

Zysett sees his linebackers as a strength of the team, while the biggest weakness he admits is depth. While players in the program is up this year, a majority of the team is freshmen, needing JV time before competing at varsity. “We have so many freshmen that are not ready for varsity,” said Zysett. “I think we have the ability to be good if not better than last year, but we can’t afford any injuries because of our lack of depth. Our expectation is to play Cascade Christian on the last game for a league title, and I like our chances.” Working to fill voids, Zysett has seen improvement in his returning players, noting in particular his defensive line with veter-

Short on depth, big on opportunities to learn By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Lakeview High School boys soccer in 2016 may be low in numbers, but the team has no shortage in quality when it comes to heart and effort. With only one senior on the roster, the 2016 season is all about gaining experience and fighting to the final minute with a strong eye towards the future wielding a large contingent of sophomores and juniors. Taking the helm is first-year LHS Head Coach Michael Trenkle, who recognizes that with only 13 total players on the roster conditioning will be at a premium to compete, as few substitutions will be possible throughout the season. Despite a few key players from last year deciding not to return for 2016, Trenkle remains confident in the team’s ability to battle, relishing in the opportunity for underclassmen to gain extensive playing time rather than spend most of the season as substitutes. “They had a fantastic team last year, unfortunately people graduate, but we’re going to train hard

Many of these guys are going to play 90 minutes every single game. We’re focusing in practice that it’s all about effort and conditioning, because they will need to be just as strong in minute 90 as they are in minute one.” Gone is a big senior group last year that led the Honkers to the state playoffs, as well as the heir

apparent goalkeeper in Derrick Dunn who instead chose to play football this fall. Instead stepping into that vital role this year is freshman Ryland Knight, who according to Trenkle has AYSO experience and has shown great improvement. Ty Whitman and Sam Springer will act as backup goalies, but barring injury Trenkle hopes to keep Knight in the net all season. Depth will remain a concern all season long, but Trenkle plans to remain aggressive throughout, citing that he would like to run a

4-4-2 scheme but will adjust as necessary depending on the game scenario. Returning players with extensive game experience include senior Eddie Ruiz, the team captain, juniors Bryce Crumrine, Mark Lee, Lucas Collins and Juan Moreno, along with sophomores Jose Villalobos and Axel Hernandez. Of that group, Moreno last year earned all Southern Cascade League honors, proving to be an effective offensive threat as one of Lakeview’s top goal scorers. “I will lean on my veterans a lot during games

and practice,” said Trenkle. “I’m counting on them to help the newer players and get them adjusted. A lot of our first year players have no exposure to the level of play they will see. We need to bring the intensity up, and in games we’re going to position experienced players around the younger ones to help them out.” With only 13 bodies fatigue may become a factor, but Trenkle believes strongly that the team can be competitive against every team on the schedule. Above all, he wants to see improvement every game and see the team come together as a cohesive unit. Of the newcoming players, sophomore Carlos Soto in particular has caught Trenkle’s eye as a natural to the sport. “We’re going to go wherever we’re scheduled and compete hard regardless of who the opponent is,” said Trenkle. “I’d love to see the team reach the state playoffs, but in the long-term of the program we have to look at the young kids and realize they will be the core of our team in the future, it’s about getting them as much experience as possible.”

LHS Football Senior Spotlight David Arcularius David Arcularius is the son of Bret and Leslie Arcularius. He has two siblings, Amanda and Brian. Brian also plays football for Lakeview High School. Arcularius is a versatile player for the Honkers, starting at running back and safety. He played wide receiver and safety last year, where he earned all-league honors. Arcularius is also a member of the LHS basketball and baseball teams, where he has also earned Southern Cascade League accolades as an outfielder. As a student Arcularius is active in FFA and carries a 3.5 GPA. He plans to attend OTI in Sacramento, Calif. to study automotive and diesel mechanics.

Michael McCully

Derrick Aaron Dunn is the son of Kelly Dunn. He has three siblings; Dani, Briar and Joleigh. Dunn joins the football team for his senior year after playing soccer as a fall sport for the past three seasons. Dunn is a wide receiver, linebacker and strong safety, while also transferring his soccer skills to the football field by handling kicking duties for the Honkers. Dunn is also a starter on the LHS basketball team and participates on the LHS golf team as well. His favorite aspect of athletics is the competition and the challenge to making himself better. Dunn is undecided on his post-high school plans.

Jose DeJesus SalasRamos is the son of Jose Perez and Conception Ramos. He has three siblings; Leticia, Loal and Angel. He prefers being called Jose Salas. Salas is an offensive guard and defensive tackle for the Honkers football team. He enjoys the physical aspect of the game, being able to hit people. As a student, Salas carries a 3.3 GPA and plans to study auto repair Universal Technical Institute.

Michael Leo Douglas is the son of Dan Douglas and Jess Calvin. He has two siblings, Victoria and Aaron. His nickname is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dougie.â&#x20AC;? Douglas is a wide receiver and linebacker for the LHS Honkers football team. He is also a standout in baseball for Lakeview as a catcher. He currently is undecided on his post-graduation plans.

Michael McCully is the son of Greg and Suzie McCully. He wears #79 for the Honkers and is a starting lineman on both sides of the ball. In additional to football he plays for the Honkers baseball team and is a standout wrestler, earning a district championship as a sophomore and junior and placing third at state last season. McCully looks up to his football coach Rusty Zysett for his love for the game. He enjoys the team aspect of the sport the most. After graduation McCully plans to attend Oregon State University to pursue a career in forest engineering.

Eduardo Ruiz Eduardo Ruiz-Lamas is the son of Juan Ruiz and Esther Lamas. He has two siblings, Sonia and Carlos. Ruiz wears #12 for the Honkers and is the team captain and lone senior on the 2016 boys varsity soccer team.. Last year Ruiz earned honorable mention all-Southern Cascade League honors, one of two returning Honkers to have earned league recognition. What he enjoys most about soccer is playing alongside his teammates and being able to represent his school. He is as of yet undecided on which college he wants to attend after graduation.

Soccer seeks improvement on last season’s success By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Coming off the best season in the history of the program, Lakeview High School girls soccer is seeking even further improvement and growth in the burgeoning varsity soccer program. While fielding only two seniors, Megan Reese and Ciara Lindsley, much of the core nucleus of last year’s squad returns with several newcomers hoping to contribute and push veterans for playing time. Nicholl Head Coach Jim Nicholl returns for his second year after leading the boys soccer program for eight seasons. Five freshmen join the team, some with AYSO playing experience lending some good technical ability to mold into varsity players, along with junior Alex Conley who is giving soccer a go at goalkeeper af-

According to Nicholl, Conley has proven to be a natural in the net, and will push incumbent starter Dani Dunn for playing time. “I’m really thankful to have two quality goalies on a smaller team,” said Nicholl. “Dani (Dunn) has a lot of experience, Alex has a knack for it and is very natural in the box. They’ll share time initially, and when one is in the box we’ll have the other in the field because we don’t have the depth. Both are good athletes.” While last year much of the offense funneled through senior Faith Witham, who had great ball control skills, with Witham gone Nicholl looks for more even distribution of the ball. Nicholl is looking to his two seniors to step up and lead while taking a wait-and-see approach to how the offense will share the ball with no star player to target. The dedication to the game and positive attitude is a benefit Nicholl hopes will carry the team to continued success. “Macey Hargis has improved her foot skills and quickness, Sami Nicholl didn’t do a spring sport so she could work on soccer,” said Nicholl. “The returners now really understand ball possession, first touches, they are way ahead of where they were a year ago and I hope that carries over to our games. The kids

that went to camps and spent time in the offseason working definitely look improved to me.” In addition to the shiftiness of Hargis, sophomore Brette Graham is a speedy striker who showed great ability in her first season last year able to outrun defenders down the sideline to spur scoring threats. Reese is another player with a strong motor that helps push the ball forward in a new European offensive scheme Nicholl is implementing he hopes will provide better spacing and a more attack-minded midfield. “The team is confi-

dent, the girls are coming in with the expectation that we will beat the teams we beat last year,” said Nicholl. “From a league standpoint, expectations and goals are to make the state playoffs, which means nabbing the second spot. I think we’re in the hunt, the good thing about having a balanced team with no star is that everyone recognizes that they have to do more for their teammates. Teams play better when they’re not counting on someone to carry the load. It’s a team sport, and they are hopeful about the season, as am I.”

Hyde builds Paisley’s running team By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner This season’s cross country team that Paisley has fielded will be unlike any that have come before. Though foreign exchange students have been a mainstay for several athletic programs over the years, this season’s cross country is all but one made up of runners from around the globe. Instrumental in keeping the program this year is Paisley junior Jack Hyde, who has competed since middle school, as

he has recruited his peers to come out for the team. “He’s in great shape coming into the season,” said Head Coach Mark Douglas. He continued to say Hyde didn’t have the times that he was going for last year, giving him motivation to train throughout the summer along with higher expectations. “He’ll be a competitive runner in districts,” said Douglas. Hyde will help anchor the program and encourage his international running partners and will be essentially an assistant to Douglas. It being his own

Douglas takes the reins from long-time coach Tony Cardoza, who has helmed the team for many years. “Rather than let the program die, I took on the program,” he said. Seven international runners all from different countries, some of whom is getting their first exposure to the sport, fill out the rest of the team. Douglas commented about the work ethic and grit that they have shown early in the season. Hyde frequented the Paisley School dormitory, talking several boys into joining the team, getting

most to participate in the demanding sport. “They’re enjoying it quite a bit,” Douglas said. “It’s a difficult sport to fall in love with overnight. Most of the kids haven’t done much in sports in their own countries. It says something about their character in how they’re working.” The athletes he’s looking toward having stalwart seasons include senior Boz Corovic from Serbia, whose build doesn’t point toward a runners. “He’s not a stereotypical runner but works really hard,” Douglas said. Another runner likely to have a good season ahead is Santiago Rodriguez from Mexico, who has played soccer and has made vast improvements. Douglas also pointed toward sophomore Mac Kwak from South Korea, saying that he is talente but has struggled with shin splints early in the season. Other runners include junior Adam Brcek from Slovokia, senior Bacon Shen from China and junior Eduardo Szeckir from Brazil.

In the early season, the team will concentrate on conditioning and mechanics with race strategy coming later in the season. “Right now we are looking at form, how to breathe, hold your arms, really simple stuff,” Douglas said. He said he is excited about the character of the team, hoping that their determination will payoff race-to-race. “The team has a lot of potential, I’m really pleased with the make-up, character and work ethic of this team. Cross country is about character building.”

Paisley volleyball starts anew By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner After a one-year hiatus that Paisley School’s volleyball took due to low turnout of athletes last fall season, the program looks to rebuild its program with a new coaching staff and fresh minds. Coached by Shelly Leehmann, the team features a small squad of eight girls consisting of five Paisley locals and three foreign exchange students, two Leehmann of whom are seniors. Through the experience of the few juniors, Paisley’s team looks promising but still is a restoring season as they build upon experience and coaching. Leehmann explained

there were three local players who have been involved in community volleyball, picking up the sport early to get the basics down before the season began. Riatta Norris, Lattigo Norris and Alora Isham were these girls, Isham previously playing for Lakeview’s team. “It’s been a bit of a struggle,” Leehmann said of the few girls who haven’t seen much court time before joining the squad, “but they’ve been picking up certain things and have seen great improvements.” The most experienced members of the team, juniors Ashley O’Leary and Kaylin Arrington, look to be the lineup’s anchors. Leehmann said O’Leary can play just about every position while Lattigo Norris, a freshman, can handle picking up the hard balls that are spiked her way. Isham will also have

In the season opener with inter-county rival North Lake, Leehmann noted Ciasulli broke out of her shell with several accurate hits to the Cowgirls’ side of the net. Paisley’s team is nothing but supportive of every girl who trains and competes. Leehmann is assisted by Kim Nichols, who has previously taught junior high volleyball and will

be instrumental to get the whole team on the same page as far as rules go. This is Leehmann’s first year coaching volleyball so she is also getting acquainted with all the specifics that the high school sport comes with. “She’s been fun to coach with and familiar with the rules,” Leehmann said of her assistant. When it comes to coaching besides basketball, the closest experience Leehmann has had is that her daughter, Crystal Pechnanec, is a coach for Mitchell/Spray’s team. The two faced off for the Mitchell/ Spray tournament on Saturday, Sept. 10, claiming one set in dominant fashion. Leehmann said since the team has the common ground of inexperience with one another it brings the team together and support in their practices with hopes of translating it to the court.

“We are trying to build a team and have a good season of trying hard along with having a good time with each other,” said Leehmann.

Cowgirls brimming with talent By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner North Lake’s volleyball force is looking optimistically toward a season of wins with a stacked roster of upperclassmen to fill out critical positions. Head Coach Cheyanne Church said every one of her players brings something special to the team. “This is the first year that I have had a team with such a strong passing ability,” she said, pointing to six-foot senior KenChurch dra Murphy who will be dominant on the net and the team’s strongest hitter. Assisting with a strong passing and serving will be sophomore Harmonie Haff and juniors Rachel Baker and Carlie Nelson. On the serving side, the obvious standout would be Raylee Hand, whose jump serve will be a threat to any of the Cowgirls opponents. Hand has been working to perfect her regular serve to transition to the jump serve for this season. “She became really consistent and we told her she can use it in games,” said Church. Hand’s jump serve will give her defenders a

high momentum ball that will be difficult to dig. The roster consists of three seniors; Hand, Murphy and Victoria Little, and backed by four upcoming juniors for additional support. “They have all played together at one point so they do well reading each other and trusting one another on the court,” said Church. When the team approaches a game, Church tells her squad to never play it safe, to their best ability and focus on getting three hits every play. Each player’s serving game are well refined so aiming for the weak passes on the other side as well as looking for the open holes on the floor to top or hit to is Strong a strategy that will serve them well. North Lake’s varsity looks to do better than last year’s results, going 9-9 overall and 4-2 in league play. They lost a hard fought match to Prospect Charter in the league playoff game, holding the scores close in two of the sets. With their lineup this go-around, they hope to do better than their sixth place landing where they finished after the disappointing loss.

NL XC, focused on mental conditioning By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner In North Lake’s second year of cross country participation, the team looks just as good, if not better, than in their inaugural season. The team consists of two returning boys and two returning girls, hoping to compete well with other schools in their division. Head Coach Scott Brown is focusing the team on mental preparation along with regimens that will condition the team’s bodies to take on the hard runs that await them around the state. These include how to conquer a hill and turning corners, concentrating on these techniques about four or five times per week. He also goes as far as videoing their stride to later show their technique in three speeds. This type of mental conditioning is a large part of what Brown likes to instill in his runners. To help support his stance, he pointed toward an Adidas poster hanging in his room that reads, “Running is a game of chess. It’s a mental game of outwitting the part of your brain that says enough is enough and the part of your brain that gives your ego a kick in the rear to keep going and the part that tells you to push yourself beyond one more step. Both distance and speed must be negotiated with strategy and physical conditioning. There is more to this than just a competition.” Along with the mental game, Brown adopts Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll’s “Always Compete” mantra. With this, the group focuses on the ways that they can be their best athlete in terms of form, best teammate, best encourager and the most fun.

the team as the top female runner last year. She kept up the pace all the way to the district meet until an injury stunted her progress. Before her injury, she had the 56th best time, running a 30:07.7 in the 5,000-meter race at the Oxford Classic. Brown said she has potential to be among the top 35 runners in the state at the 1A/2A/3A level. Coming from the track and field scene last spring, Brown and his team are enjoying the bonding that cross-country inherently forms. After a hard 45-minute workout the team is amazed how fast the session went and bond over popsicles. Brown said there is more time to stick together and help each other in their form and create friendships along the run and after more than what track and field can afford. “It’s more woven in the sport whereas it’s a different shirt each day for track,” he said. “I don’t care about winning a championship or sending kids to state, though those are great experiences,” he added about his expectations this season. “I just want them to keep getting better.”

Cowboys look young but talented By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner North Lake’s eightman football team has promising aspirations to compete with every team that they face on the gridiron week in and week out. Though their numbers are few, 13 in all, the roster is filled out with underclassmen with just one junior and one senior. “The best part of that is our freshmen and sophomores are extremely talented,” said Head Coach Barry Anderson. The team runs a single-wing offense headed by sophomore Damon Ward at spinback, the equivalent of a quarterback. Anderson said Ward Ward is packed with talent, athleticism and a good, accurate arm, though he is still learning and getting better. Sophomore Cole Vore is the team’s tailback and sole senior Garrett House will fill in the wingback position. The Vore and House pair are

If you were to come watch, you wouldn’t tell they had very little playing time last year. They’re playing like they’re juniors or seniors.” The Cowboys defense also looks young on the roster. “We don’t have that aggressive tone, but they’re getting it,” said Anderson. With so few players comes a stumbling block of learning both offense and defense, Anderson calling it a tough task. Throughout his years of coaching, he has learned how to split both sides of the ball up, getting the right side defense to skirmish their left side offense, which has its own setbacks to create game scenarios. offense and defense shows potential in the running and throwing game, it is coming down to working out a couple of tweaks to get it going. In their first outing, the Cowboys opted to keep the game on the ground with 431 yards total to 42 in the air. “We are going back to square-one with fundamentals,” he said. “We are a super young team but we are very competitive.” The coaching staff consists of Anderson and Dan Ward, who will be a great asset, filling in where Anderson lacks. Anderson coached North Lake’s team some years ago for three years and assisted on the high school level and hopped to a junior high program after four years of not coaching. Anderson grew up in North Lake, starting every quarter of every game throughout his time in school. “I want to see them continually improve every week and show they can compete no matter who our opponent is,” Anderson said of his youthful but talented team.

Raylee Hand Raylee “Raybug” Hand is the daughter of Roxanne and Duane Hand and sister of Desi, Alli, Hannah, Jessica and Josh. She is the setter on the North Lake Cowgirls team. She also takes part in basketball, track and field, Future Business Leaders of America and Future Farmers of America’s North Lake chapter. She plans on attending college after high school and her favorite part of competing is working as a team and forming bonds with her teammates.

North Lake’s middle blocker and hitter, Kendra Murphy is the tallest of the Cowgirls volleyball squad at 6’0”. She is the daughter of Cheryl and Jon Murphy and sister of Ethan, Austin and Emily. She enjoys playing basketball and track and field during the volleyball off-season. She is the back-to-back state high jump champion. She takes part in Future Farmers of America, Future Business Leaders of America and Christmas Valley Community Church’s youth group. Her GPA is at least at 3.5 each semester and makes Honor Roll. Her favorite part of competing in athletics is striving to get better and forming lifelong friends.

Garrett Michael House is the only senior and captain of the North Lake football team and will play running back and linebacker for the Cowboys. In past years, House was an honorable mention for his linebacker play. Other sports that he participates in are basketball, baseball, and track and field. House takes part in Future Farmers of America and Future Business Leaders of America while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Upon graduation, he looks to become a diesel mechanic. He is the son of Mike and Laura and brother of Jessica and Sophia.

Victoria “Tori” Emerald Little is the Cowgirls’ outside hitter. She is the daughter of Brenda Hamilton and Keith Little, sister of Sam Little. When not on the volleyball court, Little participates in basketball and track and field as well as Future Business Leaders of America and Future Farmers of America while maintaining a 3.4 GPA. After high school she plans on attending nursing school in Portland. She looks up to her former teammate Matti Wilson and enjoys working and bonding as a team.

Jubal Pierson is the sole senior of North Lake’s cross country team. Standing at 6’5”, he is the son of Cassie and Scott Pierson and brother to Ella. His athleticism translates to other sports he plays such as basketball, baseball, and track and field. He was third allleague and participated in the Dunkin Games in basketball. He looks toward Montana State University – Northern for college after high school. Pierson said his favorite part in athletics is being a part of teams with friends that he has known for most of his life and competing against bigger schools with his teammates.
