Spring signals a shot at greater heights After a long hiatus of outdoor sports through the bitter winter months, Lake County athletes have emerged from gyms and indoor facilities to compete in the sunshine and warming temperatures of spring with renewed vigor. Baseball, softball, golf and track & field teams are eager to prove themselves, whether out competing for the first time or determined to achieve even greater heights than those set last year. For seniors it is their last chance to do so, some trying new sports for the first time, while others look to build upon their previous successes to leave a lasting legacy for years to come. At North Lake School an all new track & field program has begun ready to prove that an emphasis on technique can make them competitive immediately, while baseball and softball look to build on the experience gained by the young rosters last year. At Paisley School, a well-established track
program has its sights set on reclaiming its title as the best girls relay team in the state, while competing strong in all other events with a strong work ethic that has impressed their veteran coach. In Lakeview, last year’s league champion softball team is seeking redemption for its home playoff loss determined to reach the state tournament, while baseball wants to build on last year’s experience to reach the district tournament. The golf team has added additional players to its roster while the team leader is considered one of the top five golfers in the district if not the state, and track & field has a shot to surpass its impressive haul of four state titles last year with an astounding 15 seniors, the most that longtime Head Coach Bobbie Steninger (in her 53rd season as coach at LHS) can ever recall. There are teams and individuals looking to reclaim district and state championships, while
others seek an opportunity to step up to take on leadership roles for those past sports heroes who have graduated. Coaches have worked hard to prepare young athletes to achieve their best, whether reaching the greatest heights at the state level or simply setting and breaking a personal goal to strive to reach farther, jump higher, run faster, play smarter and compete harder. Success comes in many forms, but always through hard work and dedication, of which there is no shortage among Lake County’s athletes. Spring looks to be a great time to come cheer on your Honkers, Broncos and Cowboys, as they strive to set new records, achieve personal and team goals, and reach for championships. Good luck to all athletes and coaches in their many spring athletic endeavors.

LHS golf expands numbers, looks to lower scores Lakeview High School golf returns four athletes from last year’s team, while adding several new players to the fold for new Head Coach Brian Dunn to mold. With the assistance of technical advisors Dan and Jennifer Jackson, coaches are focusing strongly on swing fundamentals and technique to remove any bad habits and hitting the ball well. “These guys are hitting 200-300 balls at the range and drives off the boxes, we want to hit the ball well first and then worry about course management,” said Dunn. That’s the approach we’re taking even with the younger guys, we’re going to learn the game on the practice range.” The LHS team features two experienced golfers, junior Tate Lightle and sophomore Derrick Dunn. Juniors Jack Burgoyne and Plao Brooks also played last year, but in their first year of playing golf their time in competition was limited. Added to the roster this year are junior Daniel Decker and three freshmen, Alex Decker, Mark Lee and Reece Raines. In Lightle, Coach Dunn believes he has one of the top-five golfers in the district, a player who lives and breathes golf taking every opportunity available to practice and play. Among his accomplishments last year on the links include a first place finish at the Illinois Valley tournament, and winning the Portland City Bob Allard Memorial Golf Tournament in July for his age bracket. With the physical talents present, Dunn is focusing on polishing Lightle’s mental game. “Tate sometimes beats himself before he ever takes the course, he takes the game so intensely,” said Dunn. “I want him to get more confident in himself, I believe he is a top-five golfer, there’s no reason Tate can’t go to state.” Pushing Lightle each day is Derrick Dunn, who showed great improvement over his freshman season, joining Lightle in competition in the local men’s league while playing for the LHS team in every tournament. With a year of experience under his belt and having played every course that the team will compete at this season, there are raised expectations with a better understanding of the nuances of the game. “Derrick is learning that there is more to By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner

Dunn said that Burgoyne doesn’t get many opportunities to practice in the summer, but already he is above where he was at the end of last season. “The freshmen haven’t played much, so we’re working from the ground up with them,” said Dunn. “Mark (Lee) and Reece (Raines) have played some in the past, but we’re trying

to start them from scratch, I suspect they will come along rapidly.” While hopes are high that Lightle and possibly others can reach state, competition will be fierce due to the special district being expanded to 16 teams this year, only the top five golfers and top three teams earning a trip to state. “I would consider it to be a good year if I can get all the guys to buy in to what we’re trying to teach them,” said Dunn. “If we can see them develop their game over the course of the season I would consider it a big success.”

LHS softball looks for title repeat By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner
Coming off a league championship and home playoff loss last year, Lakeview High School softball returns a strong core nucleus of experience and talent with sights firmly set on reaching the state playoffs. Led by four seniors, Tori Crumrine, Rachel Thomas, Amanda Arcularius and Abbi Brooks, the Honkers are determined to improve upon last year’s stellar season. Arcularius is the top offensive threat, the starting shortstop with a gaudy on-base percentage who is a multi-sport star having earned allleague honors in volleyball and basketball as well as softball. Crumrine is a four-year starter in center field, adept defensively and at the plate. She also has the distinction of having the best nickname on the team, or more specifically her glove, which has been lovingly coined “stupid.” During games it is routine to hear cheers of “Nice catch, stupid!” from teammates. Ably manning the cir-
cle is Abbi Brooks, in her third year as starting varsity pitcher. According to Head Coach Jackie Robinson, Brooks has developed her game in both learning what pitches she can throw and gaining a solid grasp on pitching strategy to not only outmuscle batters but outthink them as well. Joining the pitching staff is the hard-throwing Hannah Ramsey, who will start as the primary catcher and provide deep innings during doubleheaders. Ramsey is just one of several players who swung last year for JV and varsity who look to take on a bigger role this season for the Honkers. Among those is Katie Hadley, who was the primary designated hitter last year but now takes over first base for departed senior Brandi Larson, as well as Claire Collins and Katy Warner looking to take on larger roles. The biggest question mark remains who will take over the starting role at third base, previously held by departed senior Jessica Alves. While Robinson believes she has several girls with the glove and ability, the key is more playing

Not pictured: Tori Crumrine time to learn the position to see who will emerge as the best candidate. Aggressive base-running was the trademark of last year’s team, constantly stretching out extra bases to generate runs, something Robinson hopes to continue. “We really focus on aggressive base-running and stretching extra bases,” said Robinson. “If a ball gets away I give them the green light to get that extra base. I want to see our offense blow up this year, especially our small ball game, bunting runners over.” While replacing starters at first and third base is difficult, Robinson hopes that as the season progresses defensively the team becomes a close-knit group that doesn’t let anything get by them, communicating well and working together. Aiding in the task of polishing the already talented group into a finetuned machine is new JV Coach Courtney Wilson and assistant volunteer coach Tracy Byers. For a group
with exceptional talent and experience, it’s more about grasping the finer nuances of the game, focusing on mental reps as much as physical reps in practice to be prepared for every situation. Above all though, Robinson wants them to have fun, something she says comes very easily with this group. “I want my seniors to break out and be spectacular, they don’t know how good they can be until they
trust themselves to give their all,” said Robinson. “They’re a fun group, they are an all-encompassing group, I can tell something to one and five minutes later they all know it. They’re just a great group of kids.” Strong leadership, experience, talent, depth and aggressive play, these are the ingredients set for what Robinson hopes to be a winning formula to add to their already well-established success.

Kneeling: Michael Douglas, Frank Perry, Cotter Shullanberger, Brody Dick, Lonnie Brooks, Marcus Harmon and Noah Steward. By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner It was a very young team last year, but the experience gained should pay huge dividends for Lakeview High School baseball, led by a core nucleus of juniors determined to finish in the top four in district to earn a trip to the district tournament. Five seniors are gone from last year, with two being key starters that the team must replace, but pitching remains a strength for the Honkers with junior starters Cody Hamilton and Landen Lampman returning. Backing them up, Grant Steward, Dylan Deidrich and David Arcularius will all get turns to fill in on the mound situationally. For Head Coach Bret Prock, entering his second year leading the team, one area where he wants to see marked improvement is at the plate, where the team struggled in the lower half of the order to get runners on base last year. Aiding in teaching fundamentals are assistant coaches Sky Woods and Joseph Utley,
helping to refine defense and plate discipline. While Lampman, Hamilton and Deidrich remain as the key bats in the lineup to produce the most production, Prock hopes that the emergence of Steward, Arcularius and Michael Douglas as offensive threats will add
more pop to the Honker attack. Last year Douglas as a freshman rarely hit, taking on the tall task of replacing the starting catcher at midseason following a sudden departure, Prock choosing to DH for Douglas so he could focus on learning the catcher po-

sition. Now with a year of experience, Douglas will likely lead off for the Honkers while still contributing with sold defense behind the plate. “We have to get on, one of our biggest issues last year was the bottom of the order didn’t have much production,” said Prock. “Our first six hitters have to produce, and the last three need to make contact consistently for us to be successful at the plate.” One key figure absent this year is senior Jack Graham, who decided to

forego baseball to focus on rodeo, leaving a hole at shortstop and in the pitching rotation. While Prock admits no one player can replace an athlete as versatile as Graham, the emergence of Deidrich as a solid shortstop provides a defensive infield backbone on which to build. The team is also without last year’s starting third baseman, Michael McCully, leaving a key role somewhat blurry on the hot corner. Based on early practices, Prock has confidence in freshman Cotter Shullanberger, who has shown great ability defensively already, with junior Eddie Murrieta also able to fill that spot. Last year was about gaining experience, Prock working to get in as many games as possible including a lengthy spring break trip to get his players reps. This year it is about results, with a spring break trip planned, but hope that the progress shown by the end of last season continues. “We played our best baseball at the end of the season, so if we can do that again I believe we could be in the top four in the league to make the district tournament,” said Prock. “I expect us to compete in every game we play in, I expect our guys to respect each other and our coaches, and play hard.”

LHS track loaded with seniors, experience By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Entering her 53rd season at the helm of Lakeview High School track and field, Bobbie Steninger cannot recall ever having this many seniors on one team before. Fifteen seniors in all pack the roster, some newcomers trying the sport for the first time in their final year, but most with plenty of experience, half qualifying for the state championships last year. Among those returning are several who placed, and a few who walked away with state titles, including defending javelin state champion Delaney Hall and two members of the 4x100 relay team that captured the title in thrilling come from behind fashion. There are some seniors from last year’s team though that will be difficult to replace, including Lane Hadley, who was declared the athlete of the meet at the state championships, playing a key role in three of Lakeview’s four state titles. Steninger says that there is not one person that can replace his talent as a sprinter, but there are plenty of athletes ready to step up. It is a fine mix of upand-coming talent eager to prove themselves and experienced leaders that have the Honkers primed for a solid season, Steninger setting sights high anticipating a first or second place finish in the district. While the blow of losing 15 seniors after this year will be felt, Steninger is very excited about the newcomers to the team and talented middle schoolers set to be the future of the program. Some of the returning athletes are trying new events, whether due to injuries or simply out of interest. Others will be brought along slowly, still recovering from injuries
went to state last year will be stronger this year,” said Steninger. “Our boys and girls 4x400 relay teams will be stronger. I think I can put two very good girls 4x400 relay teams together. Our girls javelin and discus this year in particular are going to be great.” With talent, depth, experience and several championships already under their belt, Lakeview’s large collective of seniors and newcomers in track and field this year have their sights set clearly on reaching even greater heights, leaving a legacy behind for many years to come.

Several of the newcomers I think are going to do very well.” The early meets in the season Steninger considers as warm-ups, opening up competition to see where things stand and setting goals to improve upon. According to Steninger, the biggest difficulty she faces is the inability to place athletes in both distance and field events, but otherwise has a wealth of talent to utilize. “The kids we had that

Paisley looks to shine in track and field Though thin in numbers, Paisley School’s track and field team is looking strong in talent to carry on their reputation of excelling as a tightly knit team with individual standouts. The Paisley team has been working hard for around a month just on conditioning and now working to build individual skill sets at each of their chosen events. At every after school practice, the student-athletes show tenacity and dedication, which in turn astounds Coach Mark Douglas. “In my 30 years of coaching I haven’t seen this kind of work ethic,” Coach Douglas said proudly. Track and field has become a favorite sport among Paisley athletes. In the last four years, the girls 4x400 relay team took home top place finishes at the state championships. Though the girls missed out on it last year, the team is anxious to excel in any event that comes their way. Coach Douglas explains that because of the team’s fewer numbers, it becomes essential that all of the team’s athletes are fundamentally flawless. Since most other schools have larger numbers, there is innate higher chance for them to capture places, consequently adding more to the team total. Paisley’s team is currently sitting at 17 athletes, all of whom will put their best effort forward for the team. “We have to be on the top of our game,” Coach Douglas said. Among the few are stellar athletes anxious to compete. The sole returning boy is senior Camden Jones, who will be helming pole-vaulting duties as well as the 100-meter dash and the triple jump. Brazilian exchange student, senior Mateus Falcao, is also looking promising in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and the long and triple jump events, despite his lack of experience on the track. Bryton Jones will be trying his hand on the 100 and 200-meter dashes and the pole vault. On the girls team end, there is a tad more experience with three returning girls who have previously placed at the State Championships. Junior Krysta Colahan medaled in long jump and triple jump last year and will take on those events plus the high and low hurdle events. Lizzie Hyde, junior, placed seventh in high

jump last year at state and is now eyeing doing even better this year along side the triple jump event. Last of the returning girls is the lone female senior, Priscilla Norris. Last year she placed in the 400-meter dash and will participate in that event as well as the 200-meter dash and the shot put. Among the newcomers on the girls side is Ashley O’Leary, who Coach Douglas describes as very athletic, a good thrower and will run a leg on the 4x400 team. “She has a lot of depth that we desperately need,” said Coach Douglas. The small but well-experienced coaching staff will consist of Mark Douglas who will be assisted by Tony Cardoza, who coaches the Paisley cross-country team in the fall. Douglas has extensive experience of coaching track and field from his early days of competing in high school and college. He even volunteered to coach for a year at Oregon State University before moving to Paisley around 20 years ago. With the Paisley team, Douglas tries to instill a sense of learning from the struggles of competition, not measuring success by medals or points awarded. “We talk about that it isn’t about who has faster kids, but what we takeaway and learn from athletics,” he said adding further that Paisley has one team rule, which is in everything that they do they do it with class, honor and dignity. Whatever the outcome of each race, throw or jump, Paisley’s track and field is going to show the rest of the state what they can do at each meet and with poise.

North Lake launches new track program

North Lake’s 2015 track team. Top row: Victoria Little, l-r, Raylee Hand, Kurtis Oster, Donovan Creager, Russell Brown. Front row: Ass. Coach Andrew Shawcroft, Maggie Cornell, Laurena Schmidt, Megan Nelson, Kendra Murphy, Gentry Strong, Noah Balance, Patrick Kelly and Head Coach Scott Brown. Not pictured: Kelsey Bowers By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Fortuitous circumstances have led to North Lake re-establishing its track and field program after a roughly two decade absence, the result of community support and student interest matched with the arrival of an experienced track coach joining the school’s faculty. Scott Brown, a math teacher at North Lake, has a lifetime of experience competing in and coaching track at the high school and college level, most recently as the head coach at Redmond High School. Seeking a change in quality of life and reduced class sizes, Brown came to Lake County after considering leaving teaching altogether to be a full-time personal track coach, first establishing a small middle school cross country program at North Lake this past fall, leading to inevitable suggestions that the track program should be revived as well. Thanks to numerous donations both in equipment and finances from both local community members
and Brown’s various connections with coaches and programs across the state, North Lake is prepared to take on all comers for the foreseeable future. Building a program from scratch is not an easy task, yet already Brown has collected enough equipment that short of a rubberized regulation track North Lake has as many tools available to compete as any 1A school in the state. With eager athletes wanting to learn the new sport, there are also no bad habits to break, Brown and assistant coach Andrew Shawcroft focusing on primarily teaching technique to mold competitive athletes from the ground up. Everything from learning how to use starting blocks to basic stretches have occupied much of practice, but the enthusiasm and willingness to learn and ask questions has Brown enthused for the team’s eagerness to understand the science behind the sport. While in its first year of competition expectations might be understandably low while learning a new sport, but Brown has
high hopes that his athletes will compete hard from the start, already early in practice seeing motivated, excited athletes wanting to perform to their best abilities. “We want to have fun, work hard and have kids compete like they’ve never competed before,” said Brown boldly, who emphasizes competition in practice to bring out the best in each individual. He has implemented drills and
techniques learned from innovative football coaches like Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly, and matches both boys and girls based on abilities to compete alongside each other to push for top times. Already Brown says that athletes are not only showing drastic improvement, but also a reinvigorated love for sports and each other. “I truly believe that if I can teach these kids how to compete and train, then that will take effect in other sports too,” said Brown. “I’m seeing real friendships form, the relationships are great. These kids have been competing against each other for playing time for years, but in this sport everybody plays, so they’re having a blast supporting and cheering for each other.” With curious athletes wanting to give the new sport a try, many are attempting dual participation, joining the track team while also playing softball or baseball. These dualsport athletes include Rebecca Harris, Mattie Wilson, Kira Thomas, Jubal Pierson, Garrett House and Taylor Stockton. Brown is convinced the team has tremendous raw talent, it’s simply a

matter of gaining experience. He believes the team will be particularly strong in throwing and jumping events, while slowly implementing the more technical events like relays. Above all, Brown wants to create a culture of winning attitudes at North Lake, to instill a belief that with hard work championships are possible. “I told them to expect to win championships, we’re going to get trophies,” Brown stated emphatically. Through experience, hard work, regimented training and a strong winning philosophy, that belief is only a matter of when, not if.

Libolt chose not to play baseball last year, returning this year as the lone senior on the roster. Libolt excels not only on the field, but in the classroom as well, carrying a 3.9 GPA. He is active in multiple groups, including Future Farmers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, student council and his church’s youth group. He is a scholar athlete and on the North Lake honor roll. Earlier this year he was given the Lake View Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award.
Kurtis James Oster is the son of Nic and Stephanie Oster. He has two siblings, Shyann and Conner. Oster is one of two seniors leading North Lake track and field in its first year of competition in roughly two decades. He intends to compete in the 100-meter dash and throw javelin for the Cowboys. After completing his high school degree at North Lake High School, Oster intends to attend Central Oregon Community College.

North Lake baseball builds on experience By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner A strong core of juniors will be the driving force in the North Lake Cowboys baseball attack this year, bringing a wealth of experience and talent to the diamond. Only one senior is lost from last year’s team, with Daniel Libolt the lone senior this season providing leadership despite taking last year off from the sport. Junior pitcher Cameron McCord will be the centerpiece of the team with Libolt, Jubal Pierson and Vince Shumway rounding out the pitching rotation. Nathan Gilbert, last year’s starting catcher who will be leaned on heavily again this year behind the plate, may also occasionally find time on the mound when called upon, allowing an opportunity for McCord to gain some experience from the backstop. One player who will be missed this year is Ethan Murphy, a welcomed addition to last year’s roster after taking sophomore year
off from the sport. One of North Lake’s better outfielders last year, Murphy has chosen to again skip baseball season to focus on other priorities, leaving a void in the outfield and at the plate. It is the third year the Cowboys are learning under the tutelage of Head Coach Nathan Young, who even early on in practice has seen a team better than last year thanks to the previous season’s experience. In his first year, then as assistant coach, the entire season was unfortunately forfeited due to several home-schooled athletes not officially registering in the district but participating in the sport, removing a strong performance that had the Cowboys tie as district co-champions in the Mountain Valley League. Last year was a tougher go, only one senior and inexperience across the roster resulting in some blowout losses, but the experience gained looks to turn into tangible results for this season. “There’s a huge differ-

The experience we have returning helps, we look like we’ve played baseball a lot before.” Helping to teach fundamentals alongside Young are assistant coaches Chad Waldron and Daniel Miles. Waldron focuses largely on working with outfielders while Miles, a former North Lake player, helps out with hitting. Coach Young appreciates the help, allowing practice time to be broken up for more individual work. In terms of playing style, Young wants the team to focus on a small ball approach, getting hits and moving players. He notes that recent changes to rules regarding bat designs has limited the effectiveness of batting power, citing the fact that the College World Series had the
fewest homeruns in series history last year, largely the result of changes to bat cores. “The ball just doesn’t bounce off the bat like it used to anymore with the changes to bat cores,” said Young. Adjusting to fit new bats, Young has several players working on bunting, developing a more team game. Among the new players on the roster,
Young points to freshman Connor Wade and sophomore Darren Dutcher, who didn’t play last year, as playing key roles for the upcoming year and into the future. In league play Young considers Bonanza and Prospect to be the annual rivals, while predicting Lost River to have the best shot at taking the league thanks to the return of multiple dominant pitchers.

Not pictured: Maggie Cornell By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner North Lake Cowgirls softball faced a tough climb last year with a predominantly new team in spite of five seniors, now in 2015 a younger but more experienced roster takes control looking to elevate the Cowgirls to new heights. While lacking a single senior on this year’s roster, two returning juniors, Taylor Stockton and Mattie
Wilson, provide solid experienced leadership for the team as two of the five returning starters for the squad. Head Coach Shayne Flock looks to Wilson in particular for providing consistency in her role as starting shortstop, highlighting the junior for both her abilities and attitude. Most of Flock’s returning players establish the foundation for the infield, making defensive experience a strength for the team. Ably manning the circle will
be pitcher Kira Thomas, a sophomore but with abilities beyond her years according to Flock. “We have one very accomplished pitcher in Kira (Thomas),” said Flock. “We’re going to rely on her heavily for leadership.” Rounding out the pitching staff behind Thomas will be Rebecca Harris and freshman Miranda McElhatton. Both will get plenty of opportunities to strut their stuff in the circle, as nearly all of North Lake’s games this year are sched-

uled as doubleheaders, necessitating a second strong arm to go the distance for long innings. Flock is in his second year of coaching, gaining invaluable support from assistant coach Alisa McElhatton as both the players and head coach continue to develop their knowledge of the game and fundamentals. “Most of the teams we face have city leagues, but for many of our players high school is their first time playing the sport, so it’s a big learning experience,” said Flock. In spite of this, he noted the quick strides that newcomers have made in preparation for the season, in particular Harris as a backup pitcher and freshman Violet Wilson, who will be called upon to handle catching duties. Flock hopes that last season’s growing pains will pay dividends this year for the five returning players, who already have shown more confidence in the batters box and fielding. Whether this translates into more wins over last year is yet to be seen, but Flock hopes that if nothing else the team is competitive throughout. “I want the girls to play hard, be competitive and consistent, not to lose focus or give up,” said Flock. “Since we play so many doubleheaders it’s important that we stay focused, and if we suffer a loss in the first game we need to be able to put it behind us and find a way to refocus.”
