Spring Sports— A Field of Dreams As the weather finally clears, or at least should hopefully soon, spring and summer beckon with its annual traditions of cleaning and outdoor activities. Bundled up inside for far too long rather than brave the harsh elements. The student-athletes of Lake County emerge from hibernation to partake in the grand outdoor sports, the promise of a new season, and a fresh start. This is a time for the baseball and softball diamond to be active, for the track to be busy, and the links to receive fresh divots from aspiring golfers. Returning familiar faces and a wealth of fresh talent emerge to carry on the traditions of sport at their respective schools, eager to set new personal and team goals, achieve glory, set new records, or cope with the agony of defeat and hope of redemption this year. Returning coaches are addressing how to replace the graduated seniors they relied on last year for leadership, determining new team captains and those who will be relied on heavily in the fresh campaign. Some schools welcome new coaching staffs altogether, anxious to prove that the new lessons they have taught their young pupils in practice will pay dividends against the other league opponents. Road trips are being planned, not just for the teams themselves, but for the parents and families who every year find a way to somehow go the extra mile, shuffling work schedules and other commitments, determined to cheer on their kid’s team no matter

how far away in the state the next competition will be. If spring is a time of renewal, a chance to breath new life into the still relatively young year, then sports become a microcosm of that ideology. The spring season brings new hopes, optimism, and a sense of pride instilled in our very humanity through the victories by the teams that represent us, our communities, our families and friends. The memories that will emerge from this spring season will last a lifetime for those involved. Humorous stories among teammates years from now will be retold and often embellished at the local bars as old friends gather to share a drink and reminisce about past glories. This special publication, highlights all of the teams at their respective schools. It includes team rosters, upcoming schedules, and team previews. We’ll hear directly from coaches, profile the seniors from each team, showcase individual standouts and starters, share team photos, reveal key stats, and provide all the information you will need to cheer on your favorite teams. We at the Lake County Examiner wish the best of luck to all of the county’s school’s teams and athletes in their pursuit of athletic achievement this spring. We look forward to providing print and video coverage of each team all season long. — Kurt Liedtke Sports Editor

Attentive coaching and a willingness to work hard By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Expectations are high, and the pre-season schedule is loaded to test LHS baseball in 2014 under new Head Coach Bret Prock, and that’s just the way he likes it. Practice has been intense under Coach Prock’s tutelage, but the team has been absorbing the lessons quickly, in preparation of the rigors of the season ahead. Enough athletes tried out for baseball this year that LHS was able to form a Junior Varsity squad for the first time in years. A 16-11 record in 2013 was just enough to make the 3A OSAA playoffs, losing 11-4 to eventual state champions Pleasant Hill. Losing three key seniors leaves a big hole to fill, especially at catcher. Stepping into that vital role will be Ronny Humphries, who has never played catcher before, but according to Prock has picked up the position quickly. The 2014 roster has plenty of experience, with five sophomores having

Prock said that the core nucleus of sophomores will be relied on heavily. Among them is Cody Hamilton, the ace pitcher who will start the majority of games according to

Prock, and Landen Lampman, the other primary pitcher in the rotation. Five seniors provide leadership for a roster that has played a lot of baseball to date, and Prock believed it was time to have them prove it. In an unprecedented move from recent years, LHS baseball spent their spring break touring Oregon, taking on competitive teams who are consistently in the state playoffs, to prove that they can play against anybody. While transitioning to a new coach with different training techniques from status quo can be difficult, Prock is impressed with the work ethic and adaptability of his players. “They’re all hard workers. It’s always tough to get a new coach with a different style,” explained Prock. “Last year they were prone to do a lot of things on their own, but I like to manage closely. The players are adapting well, practicing at game speed. It’s a real credit to them wanting to work more, they

bought in early.” The team went into spring practices early as well, absorbing a new training regimen from the coaching staff and focusing on fundamentals, which Prock believes puts the team ahead of schedule, compared to their opponents, providing a possible early edge. Prock hopes all the hard work and positivity will reflect long term in the results, improving on

the 16-11 finish last year, and returning to state. By testing the team early with tough opponents he believes it will help confidence grow, proving they can play alongside the best the state can offer. Regardless of what the final record may be this year, under the tutelage of a very attentive coaching staff and LHS baseball players willingness to work hard they will be unafraid to take on all comers.

Lakeview High School golfers have a difficult task ahead this year

KURT LIEDTKE/ Lake County Examiner

Freshman Golfer Derrick Dunn has impressed LHS Golf Coach Frank Logan with his ability to quickly pick up the game. By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Lakeview High School golfers have a difficult task ahead this year, with only one returning athlete and a new coach, but the rigors to come, should pay off down the road. Frank Logan, owner of Lakeridge Golf Course, is taking over as the new head coach for the LHS Golf Team, training five student-athletes. It is a very young team with four freshmen and one sophomore, and no women chose to participate in the sport this season. Sophomore Tate Lightle is the lone return-

ing player, and a lot of pressure will be placed on him to be the leader for the young squad. “Tate’s got a great game, he’s come a long way from when he first started, he just loves to play golf,” Logan said. “I’d like to see him make state this year. He’s going to be the backbone of our team.” Rounding out the team are four freshmen: Derrick Dunn, Alec Henderson, Jack Burgoyne, and Plau Brooks. With no home tournaments at Lakeridge scheduled for the 2014 season, it will be trial by fire for the young team to handle the pressure of competing on unfamiliar courses. “Tate and Derrick have played a bit of golf, but for the other three the sport is very new for them, but I’m pleased with how quickly they’re picking it up,” Logan explained. While there is room for improvement with each player’s game, Logan is impressed by the progress his golfers have made in a short time, and has lofty goals. “My hope is that two of the five can make it to district and state,” Logan said. “We’re looking for great things this year.” The golf team will initially take Lightle and Dunn to tournaments, while the other three freshmen continue in their training.

“Alec, Jack, and Plau, they’ve really never played much golf before, they’re more track and baseball players,” said Logan. “We made a deal where they have to shoot at least a 60 on nine holes and then we’ll take them to a tournament, I don’t want to throw them to the wolves until they’ve developed their game more.“ While Logan is the lone official coach for the team in 2014, he did express thanks for the tremendous community support, stating that many of the local golfers come out to the course often to help. Logan likes to have his athletes play a round of golf before departing for a tournament, and whoever shoots the best score will be the top position. “Derrick (Dunn) has played a bit of golf, he needs to get his drivers down, his chipping, and his putting. He’s never played in a tournament before, so it’s a matter of him handling pressure, but he’s coming along,” explained Logan. The team is currently signed up for five tournaments, with the district tournament starting on May 12, and the state tournament beginning on May 19.

Coach wants team to enjoy themselves, have fun By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner

“We expect to finish first or second in our league, because that’s always our expectation,” said Jackie Robinson, Head Coach of the varsity Lakeview High School Softball team. Above all though, she just wants her team to enjoy themselves and have fun. Fun is something never in short supply among the bunch comprising the LHS thirteen-member varsity and eleven-person JV teams this season. Seeking to improve on last year’s 9-15 finish, a wealth of proven experienced talent returns, led by three seniors, catcher Rachel Leal, first baseman Brandi Larson, and third baseman Jessica Alves. “Rachel has been on varsity for all four years, and we rely on her quite a bit as a leader, while with Jessica we can depend on her to not make mistakes, and Brandi hasn’t been playing as long as the other two but she works really hard,” said Robinson of her seniors. Junior Abbi Brooks will be the primary pitcher for the Honkers. She played a full 24 game roster last year for varsity, finishing with an overall record of 4-6 while pitching five complete games.

Other returning talent includes Junior Centerfielder Tori Crumrine, a third year varsity starter, and Junior Shortstop Amanda Arcularius, also in her third year on varsity. Lost from last year’s team are the leading hitter (Mandi Brooks-34 hits), and leading base stealer (Joley Powell-30). Tasked with replacing those key losses are two new additions to the varsity roster, sophomore second baseman Carly Larson and sophomore first baseman Katie Hadley. Both saw limited action as swing players on varsity last year,

but this will be their first full season with varsity, while Hadley will continue to double-up also playing with the JV team. “Carly is really working hard to pick up second base, and Katie is going to be a solid hitter for us and exciting to watch,” said Robinson. With only four teams in the league it affords an opportunity to gain familiarity with opponents, and a chance for retribution, getting three opportunities during the year to face the league rivals of Rogue River, Cascade Christian, and Illinois Valley. “Rogue River is a strong team, we’ve always played them tough, but lost three times last year, so we’re looking for some redemption,” said Robinson. “Cascade Christian are good too, so if we can take two out of three games against them we’re doing great.” Picking up from last year’s efforts and moving forward hasn’t been a problem according to Coach Robinson. “When we first came back they didn’t forget much, they were on top of it, knew how we practiced,

so our fundamentals are very solid,” she said. “The biggest thing we need to work on is communication among our fielders and being aggressive hitters.” The expectations coach and team have for 2014 are high, but reachable with perseverance. “Our ultimate goal is to be one or two in league and reach a state playoff game, but I always tell the girls it’s more fun to make it to the actual tournament,” Robinson noted. “I have a very high expectation because I know what they are capable of, but I just want them to play well. They are great kids, very respectful, and above all a lot of fun.”

Deep and talented Honkers have high hopes for season By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner

Last year’s LHS track squad was a very young group, with only two seniors. The lessons learned from 2013 look to pay off in a big way this year, with Coach Bobbie Steninger predicting that with solid performances as many as nine boys and nine girls could reach the district and 3A state meet this year, a huge leap from the five total athletes that reached last year’s state competition. It’s a large contingent of talented studentathletes, 36 in all competing in various events, and Steninger is thrilled with the hard work her athletes and coaches have put in, preparing for the season. “We have a good sized team, and a wonderful coaching staff,” said Steninger. “Normally we have only one or two people doing everything, and with 17 events that can be difficult, but our coaching staff this year is just second to none, I’m really excited about how they work with the kids.” The team has its share of standouts, such as junior Delaney Hall, who intends to compete in javelin, pole vault, and the 4x100 relay. She went to state last year, and is ranked #4 in the state in javelin, having already recorded a throw of 128’10” in the opening track meet of the season, the Summit Invitational. Another athlete to watch is junior Miranda Conley, competing in the shot put, discus, and javelin. She finished first in the shot and discus, and second behind Delaney in javelin at Summit. Five senior boys provide leadership for the team, Dalton Alexander, Michael Cooney, Marco Guitron, Lane Hadley, and Tyler McManus, though

Steninger emphasizes there are different kinds of leadership. “Some are very rah-

rah and get teammates to perform better, like Delaney (Hall), but then people like Tyler (McMa-

nus) will lead by example, helping others to get better,” Steninger explained. “At least 60 percent of our

kids show leadership potential right down to the freshmen. I’m just so pleased with our team and coaches this year.” A strong contingent of new faces to the team in first-time track athletes and freshmen are injecting a tremendous amount of talent into the squad’s capability to shine. Steninger highlighted in particular freshmen Lily Sabin, Megan Reese, and Madisen Schreder as three to watch with a great opportunity to reach the state meet, being held May 22-23 in Eugene, at Hayward Field. She believes that multiple freshmen and kids that haven’t previously participated have a shot at state, and expects when they are placed in the right event they will really blossom. Steninger expressed great pride in the capabilities of the relay teams. “The three strongest schools are probably going to be St. Mary’s, Cascade Christian, and us,” said Steninger. “If we put that 4x4 together, we’ll be really good. I have a lot of faith in them based on what I’ve seen, I believe we’ll send a lot of kids to district this year.” Two key events will be the Crater Classic and Sterling Bank Invitational, both qualifying meets where all divisions compete, and kids need to reach certain requirements to compete in the state meet. While hopes and expectations are high for the team with both individual standouts and a well-rounded roster of talent, Steninger emphasized her personal goals for the team. “I hope we’re in the top three, but I don’t want to put that kind of pressure on the kids, I want to see them focus on personal records, and if they do things will fall into place.”

Paisley Broncos track program seeks fourth relay title By Ryan Bonham Lake County Examiner Paisley’s track and field program has set its sights on a singular goal of significance for the 2014 season: another state relay title. Last spring, Paisley’s women nailed their third consecutive state championship title in the 4x400meter relay event, and the hopes are high for title number four this year; a feat that head coach Mark Douglas feels is most certainly within reach. “The kids are really focused on that,” he said, noting that Paisley is the smallest Oregon school to win this state title, let alone three years running. As Lake County’s central-most and smallest high school, a continual struggle is always with limited numbers, given that there are a total of 30 high school students overall. But the athletes that have turned out are dedicated to working hard, and the potential is there, Douglas said, as revealed by performances at the team’s first meet, the Summit JV Invitational held on March 19. Several athletes are returning to the fold for 2014, including three of the four members of last year’s champion relay team. Included in this group of returnees is sophomore Krysta Colahan, who also went to state in the long jump and triple jump events. Added to her repertoire was the 300-meter hurdles event at the Summit meet. “We’ve got high hopes for her to be successful in those hurdles,” Douglas said. Senior Julia O’Leary won the 800-meter and placed fourth in both the pole vault and triple jump at last year’s state championships, in addition to running a leg on the 4x400meter relay team. O’Leary will also be

Junior Priscilla Norris, who ran on the last two 4x400-meter relay teams to go to state, is an apt sprinter as well as shot put athlete. Norris will also compete in the 200-meter event. “She’s got just a great attitude and work ethic,” Douglas said. Senior Jessica Arrington returns as a solid thrower for the Broncos, and may also take a spot as a relay runner for Paisley. Arrington has proven her mettle in past seasons in the shot put, discus and javelin events.

Sophomore Lizzie Hyde will compete in the high jump as well as hurdles and relay events, Douglas noted. Among the new athletes for the Broncos are seniors Karla Mendieta and Juneil Keller, both of whom are proving solid potential as sprinters and throwers, Douglas said. Sophomore Alyssa Keyte brings a gymnastic level of athleticism to the field, and is currently developing as a pole vaulter. On the boys’ side, junior Camden Jones returns following a successful state bid last year, where he placed ninth in both the

110-meter hurdles and the pole vault. New for Jones’ competitive roster this season will be the high jump. Senior Ganji Batsaikhan, an exchange student from Mongolia, is in his second and final year on the team, focusing on the pole vault event. German exchange students David Feingold, senior, and Niko Arfsten, junior, are new to track, bringing their own strengths to the fold. Arfsten is more of a distance runner, while Feingold hits his stride in the shorter sprints. Junior Jax Wampler will likely prove a solid dis-

cus athlete for the Broncos, while sophomore Steven Babb is focusing on sprints and the pole vault. Senior Dillon Walton is still defining his roles, but will most likely fall in as a sprinter and thrower, Douglas said. “He’ll probably be a success in whatever he decides to do,” he said. In the meantime, the focus is on training each week and building experience at every meet. “These kids have a lot of potential, and they’ve worked really hard,” Douglas said.

New players bring strong talent to the diamond for the Cowgirls North Lake softball returns five players from last year’s squad, including three returning seniors, giving hope for improvement on last year’s 4-3 finish. 2013 was a boom or bust season for the Cowgirls, with one team scoring at least 20 runs in every game, including double headers, where North Lake outscored Bonanza by a combined score of 50-1, then got blown out in a double header by Prospect 57-0. Five seniors lead the team seeking a place in the district playoff for 2A/1A Special District 4, but it won’t be easy in the seven-team league. Rounding out the experienced players who will be depended upon to reach that goal include senior pitcher Hollie Fritz, senior second baseman Karrah Davidson, senior outfielder Morgan Phillips, junior shortstop Mattie Wilson, and junior third baseman Maudey Vore. There is a large contingent of fresh faces on the team, with one new senior, one new junior, two new sophomores, and five freshmen joining the North Lake team. With the combination of new and old, finding the right chemistry will be key early in the season. One thing the team doesn’t lack is the will to get better. “Our real strength this year is the desire to want to work hard and win,” said Asst. Coach Alisa McElhatton. Sharing duties in the circle will be Hollie Fritz, Karrah Davidson and Maudey Vore, a pitcher-by-committee rotation is likely to occur this year with coaches going with whoever has the hot hand. There will be plenty of opportunities to figure out whom that primary starting pitcher may be during the course of the year. As

North Lake Baseball seeking a shot at redemption By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner It is a chance to redeem errors of the past for the 2014 North Lake Cowboys baseball team, a squad that ended last year in a three-way tie for the league championship only to have their entire season forfeited for using several home-schooled studentathletes who didn’t live in their district. Looking to prove their worth is a young 12-man roster under first year Head Coach Nathan Young, determined to show they deserve to reach the district playoffs once more. With only one senior, Matt Henkel, it won’t be easy, but Young likes the work ethic of his team. “They have really impressed me with the way they want to work hard and get better,” said Young. “If we can come together and make defensive plays we’ll be alright.” North Lake returns three starters from last year, senior infielder Matt Henkel, infielder Vince Shumway, and infielder Cameron McCord. Young believes strongly in his lone senior, Henkel, to provide solid leadership for the team, and depends on contributions from others to add support. “Catcher Nathan Gilbert is going to be a team leader for us, he’s real tough and is one of the

North Lake will also rely heavily on a familiar face, junior outfielder Ethan Murphy, who played as a freshman but took last year off. “Ethan will be a great addition to the team, he provides solid defense and some offense; Vince (Shumway) and Wyatt (Waldron) will bring a lot too,” Young said. Krager, Tristan Grassman, Blair Joannette, Bryce Wade, Garrett House and infielder Jubal Pierson. One concern going into the 2014 season for North Lake will be pitching. Young believes the bats will come around, but countering it with quality pitching may be a seasonlong issue. Young has half of his roster listed as pitching candidates, with the hopes that one emerges above the others. “We lack a true ace this year,” Young explained. “It’s going to be pitcher by committee, we have a few kids who can throw, but it’s going to fall on whoever has the hot hand. If we had an ace we would go to the state playoffs for sure, but for now I think we’re going to struggle with pitching.” With five new players, including three freshmen, the arm Coach Young needs to reach the state playoffs may be on the roster already, just yet to fully showcase the skills needed

to control a game from the mound. Perhaps that will come with time over the season, but if not then North Lake may have some gut check moments. “We’ll be in it this year, it will come down to how our bats come around, but my hope is that we are in a district playoff,” said Young. “A successful season would be that guys are competitive, they stay

in the game if things get rough, and skills continue to improve. With this young group we should be pretty good next year.” Indeed, after the disappointment of forfeiting the season last year, and a young but talented roster that will only get better with experience, things are looking up or the North Lake Cowboys.
