Spring sports return for last shot at glory After a lengthy winter of indoor sports while avoiding the weather, high school athletes across Lake County have triumphantly returned to the outdoors for spring sports…even if spring weather hasn’t followed suit quite yet. As athletes return to fields and tracks, the spring marks not only a return to outdoor sports but one final shot for a large contingent of seniors seeking to make their final chance a memorable one. A few may go on to compete in college, but for most the memories shaped over the next few months will linger for the rest of their lives. Over 50 seniors suit up this spring, seeking league championships and individual personal bests, knowing that they gave their all for their communities. While North Lake School decided to cut its softball program, Cowboys baseball remains strong and the track program now in its second year looks to make even greater strides than
the two state qualifiers and high jump state championship obtained last year. At Paisley School all focus is on the track, as a talented returning group is matched with fresh faces among freshman and international students ready to make their presence known. Lakeview meanwhile has league championship dreams in baseball and softball, while track has seen more participants join the sport than any other year in history. LHS Golf and equestrian have seen their numbers increase as well, seeking to improve on last year’s performances. Leading the way are coaches and community volunteers dedicating their time to help Lake County youth not only succeed in competition but teach vital life skills to carry forward for the rest of their lives. From first-year coaches to one beginning her 54th year helming a team, the lessons learned from practice and during events this spring will impact the lives
of these students for many years to come as a profound influence on countless lives long after the final scores are tallied and crowds disperse. As temperatures slowly rise and skies clear, it is a great time to emerge from our winter duldrums to cheer on Lake County’s youth giving their all to represent themselves, their teammates, their school and their community. Contained here within are previews of every spring sport team from Christmas Valley to Lakeview, including coach interviews, rosters, schedules and insight into expectations for the season. Read on to acquire everything needed to be an expert Honkers, Broncos and Cowboys fan for the fun spring sports season to commence.

LHS baseball envision special season for seniors By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner For a talented group of six seniors, it is now or never to claim a league title in any sport outside of soccer, something that Lakeview High School Head Baseball Coach Bret Prock is keenly aware of in preparation for the season. “I don’t want to jinx it, but it feels like this year could be special,” said Prock. “This group feels special.” Indeed, the past several seasons have been building, Lakeview suffering through growing pains while developing skills, now ready to make its presence known in the Southern Cascade League. At the core of the team is its pitching staff, a strong group of seniors leading the way with ample experience and talent. Seniors Cody Hamilton and Landen Lampman are the primary starters, while senior Dylan Deidrich, juniors David A rc u l a r i u s and Brody Dick will provide relief and possibly start some games. OthProck ers to spend time developing pitching skills on the mound for JV include Alex Smith, Nolan Peterson and Fernando Inzunza. Next year a mandatory pitch count takes affect, making the development of arms important now particularly in the wake of losing the

An influx of new talent will get plenty of chances to develop in the JV ranks while a few will swing to varsity, while the large roster will allow versatility in lineups and defensive alignments. “During non-league we’ll look at combinations and see what works,” said Prock. “If we start the same guys we did last year I see us being in great shape, but it’s nice to have options to work with.” While there are some built-in disadvantages compared to the competition, where Lakeview’s isolation prevents summer ball opportunities that other league opponents take
advantage of, Prock sees a potential league title within reach if the core group remains focused and the team accomplishes four target areas of improvements. These are pitching and defense, being aggressive and smart on the basepaths, execution, and staying hungry. According to Prock, if the team can collectively accomplish these four target areas and win at home while winning road games at Cascade Christian, Illinois Valley and Rogue River, a league title is obtainable. “If we do everything the same last year but improve in these areas we will be state bound,” added

Prock. “We created a lot of runs last year and we have to do that all of the time, we have to execute when a play is on, and we must be better on the mound and play better behind them.”
If early season practices and attitude are any indication, this lofty goal seems attainable, as Prock indicated that entering his third season as head coach he has never seen the players buy in as much as they have, holding the best practices they have ever had while maintaining focus. “We have the core group and pitching to do it, and I’m glad to see that the seniors have been on the young guys teaching and coaching them, being good examples,” said Prock. “For JV I want them to learn, have fun and grow together. For varsity, I shouldn’t have to say it, the goals remain the same of a league title and having fun. The seniors know this is their last hurrah, the juniors know that this senior group is special and want it for them too.” With a strong focus on smart baseball, being aggressive yet poised, the goals that have eluded Lakeview baseball for the past three years may finally be in reach.

Softball carries on under new leadership Taking over as Head Coach for Lakeview High School softball this year is Jesse Hamilton, LHS Athletic Director, who previously coached the sport at Henley High School. With six seniors returning, it is a quality roster that Hamilton takes over filled with both talent and experience. Lakeview missed out on the Southern Cascade League championship last year, losing to Rogue River in the district tournament, resulting in a trip to Dayton to open the state tournament. This year’s squad hopes to improve on that performance, picking up where last year’s seniors left off to make a mark of their own. Goals remain to reach the playoffs this year, Hamilton believing it is possible if the team handles pressure well and plays good defense while applying pressure on their opponents. According to Hamilton, early returns show a team picking up right where they left off last season in skill level, playing solid defensively and swinging the bat well. All nine slots in the lineup are capable of producing at the plate, making the Honkers an effective offensive team that could cause problems against any opponent. LHS was profoundly successful at being aggressive on the basepaths to generate runs, a trend Hamilton hopes to continue but recognizes that moving runners is dictated on the game situation. “I’m pleased with how we swing the bat, we’re deep topto-bottom at the plate,” said Hamilton. “There are some girls in new spots, but defensively we are going to be solid as well.” Hamilton In the pitching role senior Hannah Ramsey commands the circle, taking over as full-time starter after spending much of last season at catcher, where she earned first team all-league honors. Abbi Brooks now pays off, as little depth behind her means that Hamilton will rely heavily on Ramsey to be a workhorse for the Honkers. Behind Ramsey, Taylea Lightle and Grace Thomas will both get ample time in the circle to develop their arms for this season with an eye towards the future after Ramsey graduates. “Hannah is our ace, she looks good,” said Hamilton. “Depthwise I’m concerned, we’ll need Taylea (Lightle) and Grace (Thomas) to back her up.” A large contingent of freshmen added to this year’s roster provides plenty of playing opportunities on the junior varsity team, with Hamilton assuring that they get as much field time as possible scheduling the JV and varsity teams to split for much of the season, one going on the road while the other hosts home games. Helping in Hamilton’s endeavor is assistant coach Dylan Sullivan, who will lead the JV team, joining soft-

ball after years of past baseball coaching experience. Volunteer coaches Sam Tacchini, who previously worked alongside Hamilton at Henley High School, and Frankie Manibusan will aid in molding the team. Manibusan’s focus will be largely on developing pitchers, a skill he has refined through years of leading the Lakeview men’s softball league. Hamilton brings a simple but effective mantra to the game to instill in each player, to be better than they were yesterday. “Our kids are working hard right now, we’re improving daily,” said Hamilton.” Through daily improvement, a strong core group and experienced leadership, matched with one of the best ace pitchers in the league, Hamilton believes a return to the playoffs is possible for the current group of Honkers ready to make their own legacy.

Record turnout points to strong future By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Entering her 54th year as coach of the Lakeview High School Track and Field Team, Bobbie Steninger can’t recall ever having a team this big before. Over 45 kids chose to participate in the sport this spring, fewer than half having previous high school track experience. W i t h so many fresh faces it is quite a task to provide quality time to each athlete to Steninger teach fundamentals and determine their best events. Thankfully, a large assistant coaching staff is helping Steninger to mold athletes, a group that includes Rick Stupak, Jay Glasmann, Chris Finetti, Caleb Howard and Tricia Stancliff. Additionally, Steninger is pleased to see many upperclassmen taking initiative to help nurture the new athletes, sharing their knowledge of the sport. To accommodate all of the new athletes, much of the early practices were giving each a shot at different events to determine what they would like to participate in, Steninger adamant that all get a chance to compete regardless of skill level. “For many track is a new experience,” said

Steninger. “They’ve worked hard, I can’t complain about work ethic. We’ve had to establish a rotation at practice to see what fit since most had never competed before, so we need to find areas of focus.” While such a large contingent of Honkers could cause headaches for some coaches, the raw talent displayed by the young athletes has Steninger ecstatic for the future of the LHS program. Having so many to work with has even permitted Steninger to add events that LHS previously did not compete in, such as boys hurdles.

While over the last two years LHS has had the luxury of a state champion on the roster, both having now graduated, there are athletes in returning events with state championship experience in areas where Steninger sees the Honkers shining this year. She noted girls hurdles, distance and relays events as being areas where Lakeview will be particularly strong this spring. Also turning heads early are the throwers, with Dani Dunn for the girls and Simon Ballaine and Daren Cuff showing great promise in early competition. The team features eight seniors and six juniors, all with previous experience, including Ballaine who returns to track after only competing as a freshman. This includes several who have earned trips to the state championship in year’s past with a drive to return to Eugene in for many their final chance. While numbers may be down from past seasons in certain events, Steninger noting pole vault in partic-
ular, other events have an abundance of willing participants such as javelin. With so many freshmen joining the team much of the year will be about simply learning basic techniques and finding a place where each athlete best fits. “My only concern with having such a big team is with events where we are limited in how many we can take, everyone needs to compete,” added Steninger. While it is far too early with such a large group of young athletes to know just how far the Honkers can reach this year individually and collectively as a team, the amount of raw talent and early returns has Steninger enthused about how far this team can go by season’s end. “I’m tickled that the numbers and enthusiasm is here, the desire to be good, and that they are willing to try new things,” said Steninger. “The kids who have been out before are trying to nurture the new kids along, that’s the thing that will help our team.”

LHS golf grows its roster, continue lowering scores By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Lakeview High School golf has plenty of fresh faces joining the team this year matched with a returning core eager to improve upon last season’s experience. Head Coach Brian Dunn returns for his second year at the helm teaching the finer aspects of the game, benefitting from five seniors on the roster, three of which played last year. Also joining this year are two freshmen girls, Karly Reed and Cheyenne Gaus, after lack of interest last year had zero female players. While Reed has past playing experience, Gaus is new to the sport, but according to Dunn she is a natural at it, picking up the fundamentals of the game Dunn quickly. A third freshman, Talon Stancliff, is a beginner, but learning. Since not all tournaments include a women’s tournament, Dunn is seeking an assistant coach to possibly take the girls to alternate
events when feasible, but will get them a chance to play whenever possible. The team is led by senior Tate Lightle and junior Derrick Dunn, both of whom were competitive ranking high in nearly every tournament last year. Lightle in particular was a standout, shooting in the 70s consistently as one of the best individual golfers in the district. Dunn showed steady improvement last year, Coach Dunn noting that both have picked up exactly where they left off last year, Dunn expected to shoot in the high 70s. While Dunn and Lightle are known commodities, Coach Dunn considers senior Jack Burgoyne and sophomore Reece Raines as the next tier being the keys to the success of the LHS golf season. In varsity golf five players participate, with the highest score removed, making Raines and Burgoyne’s scores vital to the team’s performance. Also returning are Mark Lee and Plao Brooks, who will battle for that fifth slot. Stancliff, Gaus, Reed, and seniors Alec Henderson and Payton Jasper will spend much of the season in JV ranks, their progress determining whether they

With 11 players out this year ranging in all skill levels, Dunn called the group a ‘cutthroat group of kids’, at times merciless in their trash talking amongst each other but a fun group that are also supportive. While weather has prevented some practice time early in the season, Dunn is pleased with the ball striking he has seen early on the golf range. Last season the Honkers placed fifth in district, about 80 shots out of that key third place slot
to reach state, a goal that Dunn thinks is possible this year. “Other teams have to reload, so if Derrick and Tate can shoot in the 70s and if I get Reece and Jack to shoot 90, a 330 round will get us to state,” said Dunn. “I believe that we can do that, it’s just making sure that they believe they can do that.” With LakeRidge Golf Course now open the team gets the added bonus of not having to travel for practice rounds, taking full advantage of spring break
to get as much golfing in as possible. Regardless of whether the 330-round target at districts becomes a reality or not, Dunn sees a season of steady improvement and fun as a primary goal for the year. “I’m excited about the girls coming out this year, both have shown a lot of improvement in a short period of time, and I’m seeing steady improvement from everybody,” said Dunn. “I want to see them play well as a group, as long as everyone is having fun and trying hard I’ll be happy.”

LHS Equestrian sees growth in numbers By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner Lakeview High School Equestrian has seen its participation double for the 2016 season thanks to a new group of freshmen eager to join the fray. While many Lake County youth learn to ride a horse before they even learn to walk, the sport of equestrian combines several events that for many of the participants presents a new challenge, offering events different from the typical rodeo and roping events in which many of Lakeview’s students are well versed. Incorporating Western, English and Rancher classes, events range from familiar rodeo contests like pole-bending, team pinning and keyhole to more traditional styles of riding such as equitation, dressage, jumping and showmanship. With eight students joining the club team this year opportunities abound to both show skills acquired through years of ranching and test their talents and horses with a range of somewhat unfamiliar and new riding styles. Helping to mold the team are Carmen and Daniel Tague, with the assistance of Norma Angele whose Westside arena is utilized as the training grounds and unofficial home of the team. Carmen has coached the team for five years, initially starting as an assistant under Drew Mobley before taking the helm. Participation has varied widely, from as few as two students to this year’s strong contingent. While most of the participants come in with some rodeo experience and even equitation and English experience, it is the roping and gaming events where Tague sees the team shining as it most closely relates to the rodeo and ranching reality of life in Lake County. The LHS team competes in a 14-school district, with around 100 total competitors aiming to perform well at districts. Equestrian is a partner sport by nature, with both horse and rider being closely judged in a symbiotic relationship of all aspects of

Each element is worth 10 points, with a total score added up to a possible 100-120 points per event. Each team member is permitted to compete in up to five different events for 50 total rides. “Overall we have very good horsemanship, our girls have good connections with their horses,” said Tague. “Roping and team pinning is where we traditionally do the best. We’ve always been a small team, I just want them to improve their scores and have fun. If we score enough to place in the middle of the district that would be a very successful season, and I think we can still have a decent team next year.”

Tague noted that while all have riding experience, not all team members have previous horse show experience. She named freshman Brette Graham as the most experienced rider for horse shows, while Hanah Peterson and Jenny Harlan are both solid in gaming. Alex Robinson also has prior showing experience. The team includes three seniors. As a club sport, the team is very reliant on fundraising and self-support for its competitions. Still, the opportunity is one that Tague revels in as an alternative for kids to still get a chance to compete. “It’s a wonderful program, it gives kids a chance for those who don’t want to run track or play basketball,” said Tague. “This is a sport they can do for their whole life.”

Stronger numbers and athletes at Paisley By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner Last year, Paisley School fielded just 14 athletes for the track and field team. This year, with returning athletes and fresh runners and throwers, their numbers have gone up significantly, making the season look even more promising with great depth. Though the team is early in the season, their first meet being Friday, March 25 and only having a little over a week worth of practices, Paisley Coach Mark Douglas is optimistic for the coming year. For Paisley School, track season is the sport where they shine. “It’s what put Paisley School on the map over the years,” said Coach Douglas. “We are a very good track and field school with a strong tradition.” Five student-athletes, two boys and three girls, are looking to anchor the team in their respective events. Senior Krysta Colahan, who has been a top jumper since her freshman year, is looking to give her swan song in the long and triple jump. She finished as high as second in these events at the state championships as well as running a leg in the girls 4x400 relay. Others looking to make a great difference are Ashley O’Leary and Lizzie Hyde. As a freshman, O’Leary took first place at the district meet, which is an even more astounding feat taking into account that it was her first go in distance running. Hyde was a medalist in high jump and pole vault events last year, so Coach Douglas expects great things from her. On the boys side, two returning sophomores look to give solid performances to rank high on the leader board at each meet. Bryton
Jones in the pole vault and sprints is anticipated to be at the top of districts while Jack Hyde does the same in the distance races, previously having a stalwart season in cross-country. Hyde was injured last year during track season, but with his performance in the fall with a personal best of 20:10.28 in the boys 5k, he is anticipated to excel. There are a few newcomers to the team who look to make a mark on the team. Senior Cody Cooper is new to Paisley’s program but has done pole vault and sprints in the past, making him a fine addition. Coach Douglas said that exchange student Sono Willbrand will run hurdles and sprints, yet his athleticism proves that he can do just about any event. Another exchange athlete is Alex Sada, who will run the distance races alongside Hyde. Another newcomer on the girls team is freshman Riata Norris, who Coach Douglas describes as very athletic with little experience but looks to develop into a track athlete in the high jump, pole vault and sprint events. Gaining a third more of athletes than last track season will provide much needed depth for the Paisley team, though the girls side went second last year in district. On the boys end of the board, Coach Douglas isn’t sure what to expect. “It’s really exciting to have these kids out,” he said, commenting about the amount of athletes coming out to compete. “It’s tough but a really good problem to have,” he continued. “One of the tough things is that most of the team hasn’t done track. It’s really difficult to have them out there with no experience and with only a couple of weeks to prepare for the first meet.” Coach Douglas continued that it’s amusing to see the new athletes improve and pick up

Many of the runners are carrying over the work ethic that they received through the cross-country season and spreads to their peers. Coach Douglas and Assistant Coach Tony Car-
doza want to make sure that each athlete fulfills their potential while learning principles they can take with them moving forward. “We really stress that the lessons in athletics go with them through the rest of their lives. What they do on the track is not as near as important as what they do with the rest of their lives.”

Mentally young, naturally athletic NL baseball By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner North Lake’s baseball team had its share of struggles last year, finishing the season with a 2-14 record and a 12-game losing streak. Last season’s team had a young lineup that featured only one senior so this year is shaping up to tell another story with Reece eight seniors on the roster backed by two juniors and a few lowerclassmen. Noticing the core of upperclassmen, first year Head Coach Devin Reece, who helped coach in the past football season, is looking to take their natural athleticism and supplement it with proper baseball know-how to excel this year on the diamond. Waldron “ W e are a mentally young baseball team,” said Coach Reece, adding that his aim is to get their heads wrapped around the game and know where to be and where to place the ball in certain situations. He has seen from experience playing and coaching at larger schools that their focus needs to be on the foundations of the game, building up each player into where they need to be. “It’s a team with a lot of potential,” he said. “It’s just a matter of finding out who is going to fit where and how they will help out
best.” One key player this year is senior Cameron McCord, who will lead off in the batting order to hopefully get on base three or four times per day. Another senior, Wyatt Waldron, who can put the ball into play, is quick around the bases if asked, making a good number-two position. Senior Kole Baert is looking to compete for the catcher position, Coach Reece noting that he is strong and a hard worker. Last on the list of key players is senior Nathan Gilbert, an all-around good ball player and unafraid to learn. Coach Reece also noted that the quick turnaround from winter to spring sports is a major obstacle. From the end of basketball season to the first game affords the players only a few weeks to prepare. Even though they

Preparing for their first match-ups, Coach Reece is working with his players on the little mechanics and tuning them up to hit fastballs. He is training the young men to attack the first hittable fastball that comes their way as to not get too deep in the count. Coach Reece explained that he was

once coached to go at the first ball they can hit, but throughout his college play, he learned that by hitting those first balls could set the tone for the game. Coach Reese is a first time head coach, previously only assisting at Oregon City High School. He grew up in Grants Pass where he made first team allstate and led in homeruns. Furthermore, he played in the all-star game in Roseburg and later played for College of the Siskiyous in California. Assisting coaching this year is Chad Waldron, North Lake High School’s wood and metal shop teacher, whose handy knowledge helped revital-
ize a tired infield that was mostly cinder rock. Both coaches spent a considerable amount of time and effort to get it up to scratch for a competent practice space for the team. “My goals, knowing the athletes we have, are to win our league and go deep in the playoffs. We don’t want to be one and done,” said Coach Reece. He added that he is known to the players of not allowing corners to be cut, has high standards and believes that hard work pays off in the end. “I told them to set their expectations high and go at them,” he said. “We are excited to get going.”

An always compete mentality By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner
Only in the second year of the North Lake High School track and field team revival, Coach Scott Brown has high hopes for his team of student-athletes, pushing each of them to their limit while having fun at the same time. Though there was a program in the 1990’s, C o a c h Brown had to start from the ground up last year, calling in Brown favors from former colleagues to donate pads and equipment for the young team. The effort came to great fruition as Kendra Murphy, then a sophomore, took the 1A girls high jump state title. She was the only competitor to clear the five feet mark, taking the honor with a 5’1” performance. At the same event, Matti Wilson was the first Cowgirl to medal at state championships, taking eighth place in the girls 1A long Shawcroft jump. Wilson will be a leader this year as the only returning senior girl who made it to state. “It’s good for them to come back,” said Coach Brown, talking about the returning athletes that went on to place. Murphy and Wilson shared their experience at the state meet the first day of practices to put inspiration into their younger peers. Not only do they lead by experience but also help give an additional voice in coaching. Another returning athlete, senior Raylee Hand, who made finals in

Coach Brown said that this kind of experience helps alleviate stress since last year it was all about teaching the very basics of each event. “It’s been nice to get older kids to coach younger kids,” said Brown. “It goes a lot faster,” he said, adding that he has gone as far as printing a sheet of key rules of each event for parents who may not be familiar with the sport. On the boys side, three are returning, junior Gen-
try Strong on throws, Noah Ballance on shot put and discus duties, and Russell Brown on the pole vault and triple jump -- last year vaulting 9’6” for a personal best. During practices, Coach Brown likes to adopt a fun attitude through their regimen. He recently purchased a speaker to play music at practices, a strategy that has worked well for former USC Trojans football and current Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll, who Coach Brown tries to emulate. “He turns every negative into a positive and it becomes infectious,” Coach Brown said. Playing
music has evidence that it helps athletes in their performances, he explained. To keep practices interesting, he also implemented “Wow Wednesdays,” where the athletes go out of their way to congratulate their efforts. He also put into place “Technique Tuesdays” to focus on those bare fundamentals and “Freaky Fridays,” an invitation for students to wear whatever they please during after-school practices. Though these techniques assist athletes to perform better, Coach Brown is focusing their team dynamic on the idea

of competition, and not just competition in terms of inches and seconds but who can be the most positive, most encouraging and have the best technique. “Competition makes you better,” he said. Helping on the coaching front is Andrew Shawcroft, assisting with sprints, relays, horizontal jumps, discus and shot put, and Brian Baker, lending his expertise to the jumps and javelin events. In the beginning of the season, expounded Coach Brown, it is more tedious to put so much time into the basics, which are fresh for nearly all of North Lake’s track stars. As the season goes on it becomes more relaxed since they all know these basics so it takes reminders rather than focused teaching. Even if the program is starting again for its second year, Coach Brown is optimistic that the groundwork has been set so the finish line will be sweeter this time around. “We will be a lot better than last year.”
