Sparse traffic, open roads and plenty of trails makes cycling a great summertime hobby in Lake County.

Cycling Opportunities Abound

By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Whether road, off-road or mountain biking, Lake County offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy bicycling around the high desert. From beginners to hardcore riders, day-riders to cross-country trips, Lake County is growing in popularity drawings fans of those who like to experience the country on two wheels. “We’re an untapped resource for biking, we have millions of acres, 80 percent of it is public land, and a lot of tracked roads that are open which are becoming really popular among mountain bikers,” said Chris Bishop, outdoor recreation planner for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). “Places like Bend are getting too crowded, so we’re starting to see more people come to Lake County. It’s the great unknown, everyone wants to discover a new place to ride so they can say they are the first.” Bishop along with several Lakeviewbased enthusiastic riders formed a biking club, which helped spearhead the effort behind establishing the Oregon Outback Scenic Bikeway. Approved in June by the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department, it is the first state-sanctioned bikeway in southern Oregon, heavily promoting tourists to try a roughly 100-mile loop from Lakeview through Plush and Adel. Beyond the bikeway there are other opportunities, such as the annual Tour de Outback, which takes place this year

on Saturday, Aug. 13, providing different length rides from Lakeview to Dog Lake. There are also many day trip opportunities. “Cottonwood, the Steens, Bullard east of Lakeview, there’s lots of places around here riders like,” said Bishop. “All forms of biking are picking up here, but it’s still the wild west, so be prepared to be out in the middle of nowhere.” Bishop suggests when riding to always carry food, water, a phone, GPS, maps and tire repair kit. To help with navigation Bishop has been working with the Oregon Outback Waypoint Association Project, which has grants coming later this summer to create virtual waypoints for GPS tracking and next year develop physical markers to help people find their way in Lake County’s open country. “Gravel riding and adventure biking, people riding 3-4 days in the desert, like backpacking on a bike, I think that’s the direction we’re going,” said Bishop. “I think now that the scenic bikeway is approved we’ll see more bike-friendly businesses emerging as well. We have some phenomenal rides ready to go here, we’re just not on the beaten path to get there.” While the U.S. Forest Service does provide some maps, Bishop and the bike club are developing more detailed bicycle maps that will showcase the top-10 road and off-road rides in Lake County. For more information contact Chris Bishop at 541-947-6185 or cbishop@blm. gov.

Ken Kestner, local gardener, shared this picture of a couple Monarch caterpillar that will soon morph into butterflies if not victim to predators.

Gardening for Monarchs By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner With its iconic orange and black color palette, the Monarch butterfly is known as the King of Butterflies, though its decline in population has been the cause of much concern. Cold winters in the form of Pacific weather systems with heavy rain, hail and high winds destroy these populations. According to MonarchWatch.org, the number of monarchs recorded at the overwintering sites in California have been declining for more than a decade. This is contributed to roadside management practices, intensive agriculture and extensive use of herbicides. Though there are many factors, Lake County gardeners as they take to the soil this summer can do a small part in helping the struggling population of Monarchs. County Commissioner and gardener Ken Kestner said that part of the loss of the favored host plants has to do with the culture of being “tidy,” or getting rid of weeds. The species of plant that the butterfly prefers to call its home is the milkweed. Kestner explained that many folks might relate milkweed as a weed, however other milkweed species can be a treat in someone’s flower garden. Swamp

milkweed, as well as other milkweed species and varieties are greatly favored and relied upon by the Monarch. Kestner considers himself a vegetable gardener by heart, growing his fair share of tomatoes, corn, squash, okra, kale, cucumbers and many more varieties. While in the dirt, Kestner has been adding flower gardening as a sideline to help beautify the space. “My philosophy on planting flowers is in addition to providing color to the homestead, capitalize on adding benefits to hummingbirds, butterflies and various bees. So I search out flowers that have multiple benefits,” he said. Late last summer, in his new flowerbed that he constructed, Kestner planted four swamp milkweed plants and found great success with them. In late June of this year, he noticed six young monarch caterpillars happily feeding on one of the four milkweed plants where the adult laid her eggs on that one plant. Kestner hopes that his minute contribution to the monarch population can make a larger impact, even in little Lakeview. For more information about growing different milkweed species favored by Monarchs, visit www.monarchwatch.org/ bring-back-the-monarchs/campaign/thedetails.

KURT LIEDTKE/ Lake County Examiner

Large yard sales and estate sales like this one held last year in New Pine Creek is a great summer activity for thrifty shoppers to find great deals.

Summer time sales just a yard away By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Summer sunshine brings out plenty for a favorite Lake County pastime, that of thrift shopping at yard, garage and estate sales. Whether seeking out a particular collectible, simply browsing, or planning a sale of your own, there are many opportunities to seek out great deals on secondhand items to feed whatever collectible hobby is of interest. While there are established businesses that offer antiques and collectibles such as Feather Your Nest in Lakeview, Just Stuff in New Pine Creek and The Willows in Christmas Valley, summer is a time when many residents choose to hold weekend yard sales to clean out homes. According to Kathy Rodgers, owner of Feather Your Nest, the smart thrifter arrives at sales as early as possible to get first look at items. “Whenever I hear about a sale, I bring a truck, plenty of money and a friend because you never know if you’re going to find some big items that need a second set of hands,” said Rodgers. “Bundling stuff is very popular. I’ll get a pile together and make a decent offer rather than pricing out every single item.” For those not shopping but planning a sale of their own, there are options as well. The Lakeview Saturday Market offers a flea market each week where people can acquire a table to sell their

For estate sales, which can be a rather daunting task, Feather Your Nest can assist with the process. For those planning a weekend yard sale, Rodgers suggests cleaning everything first and keeping prices reasonable. “Nothing turns off people faster than dirty merchandise,” said Rodgers. “It’s important to stick to what you advertise and open at the listed time, it irritates people if you open early. People are pretty savvy, if things are overpriced it’s not going to sell.” Whether an avid thrift shopper or simply perusing a neighbor’s yard sale, there is both a social atmosphere to a summer sale as well as the thrill of a great find. According to Rodgers the greatest joy comes not in the market value but finding an item important to a collector that isn’t already in their collection. “Finding a treasure is great, but really it’s the thrill of the hunt and the deal, because if you collect something that you love and find a piece you don’t have, the price isn’t that important,” said Rodgers. “If you find it cheap that’s even better, but it’s about getting something you really want.” To advertise an upcoming sale contact the Lake County Examiner at 541947-3378 or stop by at 739 N. 2nd St. Ask about out $10 yard sale special. For more information about estate sale services and yard sale tips, visit Kathy Rodgers at Feather Your Nest at 220 N. E St. or call

Season for BBQ

True Value’s Dan Henderson displays one of the most favorable grills out there to get the best taste out of any meat. By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner Nothing quite tops the smell of BBQ in the summer months. Gathered with family on a Sunday afternoon as the meat reaches its ideal temperature as appetites get primed for the crunchy caramelized sear or the balance of crunchy and juicy of a grilled burger is just one scene that may come to mind. Though some cuts of meat can take hours to finish to get the perfect cook, it is worthwhile to the BBQ-aficionado and whom they cater. The first thing that is needed before a griller bites down on delicious meat, it’s imperative to get a grill worth grilling on. Overall, there are three choices, charcoal, propane or a Traeger grill. On the lower end of the price scale, a charcoal grill hits the mark for some weekend cooks. According to Lakeview True Value Hardware’s Dan Henderson, this is the method he prefers since different kinds of charcoal have unique flavors, plus there is the taste of the smoke and heat combined. For a quicker fix, propane runs higher in price but has a longer life expectancy than charcoal. It has a different taste profile and has the convenience factor, it can quickly get up to heat in minutes, which differs from charcoal. For the more experienced griller, a Traeger grill is the way to go, said Henderson. Essentially a smoker, Traegers uses the smoke of wood pellets as a heat source rather than flame. Though it runs

higher in price and takes much longer to cook a slab of meat, Henderson said it is worth it for the taste alone. When looking to treat himself, Henderson prefers an inch and a half of rib eye with nice marbling, turning to local merchants to get the best cut of meat. Lakeview Lockers is one such provider, always in stock with the season’s offerings. Lockers’ owner Kayla Mathews said that the store is a meat house so many types and cuts of meat are available, even if they have to special order it. The store’s biggest hit is the pre-season tritips, though there are always customers who opt for a New York strip or rib eye steaks. Even when a customer doesn’t want to break out a grill or doesn’t own one to start with, Mathews and crew are happy to help. One of the many requests is for prime rib roasts, which take a lot of know-how to get just right and is sometimes more convenient for the Lockers to put in that labor. Mathews said that buying local is the way to go for the freshest ingredients in cuts of meats, and for fruits and vegetables point toward Lakeview’s Saturday Market for the freshest choices. Whatever equipment or types of meat, whether chicken, beef or pork, Lake County’s summer’s warm weather provides the comfort to hit the deck and grill.
