Winter sports heat up as temperatures drop Winter is here, as if the mounds of snow and frigid temperatures were not enough of an indicator. Yet while it may be frozen outside, indoors things are heating up as high school athletes strive to perfect their skills. Basketball and wrestling season is here, a chance for new coaches and new players to earn their place in the spotlight while returning veterans seek one final shot at glory. At North Lake High School boys and girls basketball return several upperclassmen looking to expand on the previous season’s accomplishments. The still growing wrestling program may be small in numbers but are big in potential. At Paisley High School a senior-laden girls basketball team has gotten off to a quick start. They look to continue progressing throughout

the year, while the boys team is infused with a nice mix of new talent and veteran players. At Lakeview High School a girls basketball team that doesn’t field a single senior looks to make its own identity to emerge from the shadow of last year’s senior-rich district champions. The boys team looks to build on the progress made last year for a hopeful playoff run. The wrestling team returns seven state tournament qualifiers from last year, with coaches hoping to take at least that many back to the state championships. To help teams in this venture, Lakeview High School cheerleading has also returned for its second term after a long hiatus. Even the spectators have new cause for excitement, as Honker Court has been remodeled to include brand new bleachers. They are complete with aisles and more comfortable seats to improve safety and enhance the fan experience. The remodel also allows more room to enter and exit behind the benches rather

By Kurt LIedtke Lake County Examiner It was fortuitous timing that inspired the return of Lakeview High School cheerleading this past fall after many years of dormancy. This followed the transfer of now two-season cheer varsity captain Jonna Ferrario to LHS for her senior year. Joining her sister, Bailey Guido, the team’s head coach, in Lakeview, Guido felt the need to start up the team to provide her sister with an activity. With the blessing of the school’s administration, inquiries were made to the student body to gauge interest. Many more girls than originally anticipated expressed interest in becoming a cheerleader, and after several fundraisers and a lot of practice the Honker cheer squad became a welcome addition at football games. Continuing the pro-

gram into winter presented new challenges, as indoor sports provide less room to work with than football sidelines. While slightly diminished in numbers, down to nine members split between a varsity and JV team, the Honker Cheer squad is ready to once again urge the Honkers on to victory. A well-timed remodel of Honker Court with new bleachers has provided added space for the team to strut their stuff behind the LHS benches during basketball games this winter. The JV team now also features one male cheerleader, Isaac Chappell, who will also participate on varsity by donning the Honker mascot costume. Two new members join the cheer team for winter term, Starla Rollf and Lily Taylor. Both participated in cross country in the fall, preventing them from being active cheer members. Even though it is Taylor’s first school team

cheering experience, she has many years along with Ferrario in competitive cheer. Due to her extensive prior cheer experience, Taylor was named the JV team captain and varsity co-captain. Also new to the team for the winter is assistant coach Katy Hammond, replacing Niki Taylor. Hammond, who was a cheerleader for four years in high school, is a welcome addition in a support role for Guido. Together they are developing the program beyond basic in-game cheers to hopefully incorporate a dance routine to be premiered either at halftime of a basketball game or during a school assembly. Following the growing pains of the first term reactivating the program, Guido hopes to have the cheerleading squad more present and vocal throughout the school. Having already performed at the first JV basketball home game, the team took it one

step further, coordinating a cheer during school lunch in the halls that was very well received. With most of the team returning from fall, adding more to the overall experience is the primary goal. “I want us to do some more stunting where we can,” said Guido. “I want to get the girls to learn and be able to perform dance routines. It’s been fun getting them to perform outside of cheering at games and assemblies. The first term was a learning experience. Now my expectations are to have our captains step up to be the proper leaders and role models for the student body I know they can be, for varsity to shine and JV to follow their lead.” Lifting school spirit and providing entertainment throughout, keep an eye out for Lakeview High School’s cheerleading squad on the sidelines for every basketball home game and beyond.

Not pictured: Frank Perry and Alex Decker. By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner If players can come together as a team, the Lakeview High School boys varsity basketball team could reach the state playoffs and make a run. Such is the belief of Head Coach Jamie Anderson, who in his second year helming the Honkers. He sees a veteran squad capable of meeting and exceeding expectations. With a strong group of experienced seniors and talented newcomers, Anderson and his assistant coaches are hoping that growth as a team as a mentally prepared and stable group with a close bond will lead to success on the court. Anderson too feels much more comfortable in his role, with support from returning assistant coach Joseph Utley and new assistant Dylan Sullivan. Utley leads the junior varsity squad, while Sullivan brings a vast knowledge of the technical side of the

game and a key addition in breaking down film and game-planning. Anderson has implemented a four-tier strategy area of focus for the season. He emphasizes in practice and games that all players follow the ideology of enthusiasm, communication, uncomfortable hustle and a helping hand to fellow teammates. “I learned so much last year, I feel way better this year,” said Anderson. “My focus this year is the mental side of the game, trying to get these guys mentally prepared.” The physical talents are certainly there, if the group can come together. Offensively the Honkers are led by tall senior Cody Hamilton in the paint, while senior guard Landen Lampman returns as the team’s top outside sniper. Fellow senior Dylan Deidrich, a standout in football and baseball, has come into the season greatly improved according to Anderson. He provides many more options at point guard with his ability to

penetrate, collapse defenses and bring a lot of energy on the defensive side. Adding to the varsity’s arsenal is junior Derrick Dunn, who swung last year playing for both JV and varsity, and junior David Arcularius. Senior Frank Perry brings energy to the floor as well, while coaches raved about the effort and enthusiasm of sophomore Alex Decker,

who will be the primary sixth man for varsity. “Alex (Decker) is super coachable,” said Anderson. “He can come in and play a solid job on defense, probably the most coachable kid in the whole gym. But we have a lot of great athletes, we need to improve on defense and court awareness.” On the junior varsity side the Honkers return a trio of sophomores; Cotter Shullanberger, Dominic Maita and Bryce Crumrine. According to Anderson all three may swing to varsity as the season progresses, but for now the focus is on getting them and the freshmen as much playing time at the JV level as possible. One of those freshmen that has turned heads early is Jerry Patzke, who JV Coach Utley described as deceptive in his abilities. Also noted freshmen that have impressed coaches include Jace Brazal, Kaden Greenfield and Alex Smith. “The coaching dynamic is working really well,” said Anderson. “If this team can develop a strong bond, they are athletic enough that they can run any offense and defense effectively, we could reach the playoffs and make a run.”

Youthful squad brings talent, enthusiasm By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner

It is a large shadow that looms from last year’s Lakeview High School girls varsity team, a senior-laden crew that won the Southern Cascade League title. With only three returning players from that team and no seniors on the roster, it is the opportunity for new players to showcase their talents and define their own legacy that has LHS Head Coach Brandi Harris enthusiastic about the season ahead. “Our identity is still being determined,” said Harris. “I feel really fortunate, they are a fantastic group of girls that are working very hard. I have high attitude expectations and the girls are really stepping up to that. They have a ton of talent and potential.” The Honkers have an abundance of youth, with three returning players from last year and only two juniors. That might bring low expectations for this season, but the varsity roster is now comprised of last year’s JV squad, which won nearly every single game they competed in by a wide margin.

Coach Kassi Conditt, (back row) Alex Conley, Madison Steward, Dani Dunn, Tara Stanton, Kenzie Johnston, Kate Warner and Asst. Coach Evan Reese. For whatever experience may be lacking, the Honkers can make up for it in physical ability. Juniors Megan Reese and Kate Warner are the two returning juniors, while sophomore Alex Conley was a standout on last year’s JV team and swung as a varsity

role player. All three will be relied on heavily in new roles, while freshman Brette Graham has already assumed the point guard role for the team. According to Harris, the starting lineups are subject to change on any given day, adding extra energy to practices with every position open on a daily basis. For whatever amount of experience and familiarity the Honkers may lack, it is a combination of great attitude, enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard that points to a team that could surprise this year. “These girls work very hard, improvement will come,” said Harris. “I’m working with them to define themselves as a team. As a varsity squad there is always playoffs and the state tournament as an over-reaching goal, but it’s for them about experiencing playing in league. I think they are incredibly coachable, and when it all finally clicks it is going to be fantastic.” Helping Harris in developing the team is returning JV Head Coach Evan Re-

ese and Suzi Steward as well as newcomers Kassi Conditt and Dylan Sullivan. Conditt brings extensive playing experience, whom Harris says relates extremely well with the girls, while Sullivan brings a strong ability to break down film and game plan which he also does for the boys varsity squad. There are 13 freshmen on the roster, including the aforementioned Graham and Sami Nicholl who will also play some varsity, pointing to a very bright future ahead for Honker basketball. However as much as the tendency may be to consider it a rebuilding year, it’s what the team is capable of this season that has Harris energized about the campaign ahead to move beyond the shadow of the graduated seniors. “We’re ignoring outside expectations, it’s all about us right now,” said Harris. “I’m excited for them to define who they are as a team and have that represented and appreciated amongst themselves, their school and their community.”

Coach Ted Wilton. Not pictured: Jack Burgoyne.

Strong, talented team seek return to state tournament By Kurt Liedtke Lake County Examiner Last year Lakeview High School qualified seven wrestlers for the Oregon state tournament, and according to Head Coach Bret Prock there is every reason to expect at least that many to return again this year. The Honkers feature seven seniors all looking to return to glory, while the group is boosted by a new senior addition in heavyweight Jason Trenkle. Trenkle joins junior Michael McCully, one of the top-ranked heavyweights in the state at the 3A level, creating a dynamic duo capable of facing each other in the state finals among heavyweights. “Jason is new to the school, but comes in with a lot of freestyle and Greco-Roman experience,” said Prock. “He may be 30 pounds lighter than Michael, but he’s already pushing him. We tell them every day that if Jason does go 285 our expectation is for them to face each other in the state finals.” While Prock recognizes the roster this year is stacked in the heavier weight divisions, it is a nice combination of experienced heavier weights and additions in the lighter weight classes that has Prock thinking the Honkers could exceed the amount that qualified for state last year. Assisting Prock in helping wres-

tlers achieve their best is new assistant coach Ted Wilton, no stranger to the sport. The former head coach at Roseburg High School has over 30 years of wrestling experience. Wilton’s ability to teach technique and his knowledge base of the sport have been a welcome addition to the Honkers. “Ted knows the sport, with his addition we can get a lot done,” said Prock. “Ted is a real technician, he can focus on that while I can be the motivator and work on conditioning and paperwork. We have great practices thanks to Ted and our senior leaders.” Senior leadership is well in hand thanks to returning wrestlers Logan Cockrell, Tristen Ward and Eddie Murrieta. According to Prock Murrieta is the strongest wrestler on the team, having added 10-15 pounds of muscle since last year. Rounding out the senior group are Simon Ballaine, Jack Burgoyne and Daren Cuff, all of whom Prock believes are capable of reaching the state tournament. Among juniors in addition to McCully, Prock sees bright things ahead in particular for Rennie Neider and Trevor Randall. While none have been at the forefront of the team, Prock sees them taking a step forward in abilities with the potential to shine in the spotlight by season’s end. Adding to that junior squad are

three newcomers; Jose Salas, Bryan Veruzco and Eduardo Ruiz. While all three are raw, Prock sees great early improvement, particularly in Salas who has already made an impact as the backup 220 weight wrestler while primarily competing in the 195 class. Among lightweights there are four freshmen joining the team, as well as first year senior wrestler Dylan Still joining the fray. Prock noted the performance of Still as well as freshman Loagen Antle as two newcomers that are performing strong early. “We need the young guys, I’m happy to see them come out,” said Prock. “I want to keep getting them better.” One piece missing this year is sophomore Jonathan Villagrana, who must sit out the season due to injury, leaving a void in the 120-weight class. For now it’s a matter of focusing on improvement of the group that is present, helping them to reach their potential to go above the third place finish in districts and seven qualifiers for state. “We want to improve off of last year, to match or exceed that, and then individually take just as many or more to state as we can,” said Prock. “As Ted (Wilton) said, you’ve got to believe you can be a champion before you can be a champion.”

NL has small numbers, limitless potential By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner For Coach DJ Joye, coming into North Lake’s wrestling program there is much of a learning curve. Not so much in teaching the fundamentals of the sport, but the number of wrestlers that are under his direction. While coaching in Redmond for five years, Coach Joye had a heftier load to carry, sometimes with a 100-member mat club. In North Lake, that load is substantially lower with a roster size of just three. Though the number of minds to mold is fewer, he still takes the responsibility in great concern. “It’s a lot smaller than I’m used to,” Coach Joye said, reiterating the differences in the upcoming year such as no dual meets on the schedule and fewer weight classes. He explained that there are always pros and cons with every situation and leading two seniors and a single freshmen is one of them. This year features the return of senior Wyatt Waldron in the 120 lbs. class, who has competed in state for the last three years, placing fourth as his best. Kole Baert is the other senior, competing in the 182 lbs. weight class, hoping to do the same as his peer. The single freshman who came out to the mat is Levi Waldron in the 108 lbs. weight class. He had experience in middle school, placing well in districts. Earlier this season, he proved that he will put out a strong effort, winning first place at his first showing in a high school meet. Each wrestler is well trained from previous coaches, which makes older habits die hard. “Sometimes they get stuck in one direction,” said Coach Joye, “but they have been good in receiving the di-

rections I have been giving well.” With so few wrestlers, the team isn’t so much focusing on the team dynamic of the sport. Rather they are more concerned about getting each member of the team to their best condition both physically and mentally in order to continue to get better throughout the

season. Coach Joye hopes to get each wrestler to his full potential by teaching chain wrestling techniques, which covers basic wrestling moves and their mindset in that they’re in the match as far as body position and what to do when in a specific situation. “I’d rather have them on the mat than in the weight room,” Coach Joye said. He added that when they are putting teaching to practice, it helps build muscle, work on cardio and get down their technique to use in their future matches. What is more important for Coach Joye isn’t so

much as what his wrestlers do on the mat but how they incorporate their discipline off of it. He explained that he expects each of the athletes to carry themselves with class and dignity inbetween the meets. “You learn a lot from wrestling as far as personal skills ,where you carry them onto life,” he said. “It’s always about mental toughness.” Though North Lake wrestling program is new for Coach Joye, he is looking forward to a successful season for each of the boys to excel and reach their full potential. “We are trying to push forward and do the best we can,” he said.

Cowgirls centered on improving the basics By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner After working with the North Lake boys basketball program since 2004, Jon Murphy has stepped in to take the lead coaching duties for North Lake’s girls team for this season with hopes of seeing the athletes succeed on the court. Coach Murphy is incorporating a new system with the girls team that was implemented a couple years ago with the boys squad, which is a process, he explained. The new system is based around movement, spacing and a better understanding of the game’s strategies. This will give the team a shot at being more competitive with other teams. Experience on the squad is wide spread, as there is a perfect balance of classmen, three athletes for each year. Though there are always benefits to have a more seasoned team on the court, Coach Murphy is still scoping how the close experience will shape out during the season. He is hesitant on calling any players as a key to their success in their match-ups since he is optimistic as to how each will excel with

side of the court will be junior Raylee Hand as point guard. She will be charged with bringing the ball up the court to set up and run the offense. Coach Murphy points out that she is quick and leads the team in that integral position. Other players who will be sure to make an impact are senior Matti Wilson, who is only in her second year playing in the game, but complements her lack of experience with her athleticism. Post Rachel Baker, who is in her sophomore year, will be fighting for rebounds and put-back shots to get points on the board whenever possible. One presence that opponents should look out for is junior Kendra Murphy. Her coach and father points out that at six-feet tall, she is also quick and has jumping capabilities. “When you have someone

with her height, it can be a game changer,” Coach Murphy said. This has proven true as she was last year’s team MVP and one

vote shy of League MVP. Though the talent is there, Coach Murphy is still looking to improve on the team’s weaknesses as well as their strengths. They are particularly working on their offensive rebounding, which helps keep the ball in their possession to get another shot at the basket when the previous shot misses. This gives them a second chance opportunity whenever it can happen. “We are always looking to improve on every aspect of the game,” Coach Murphy said. “Defensively we want to contest every shot and offensively we want to work the shot if given the chance.” Throughout the basketball season, all Coach Murphy wants to see from his athletes is their improvement and to be competitive every game with a “no quit attitude.” He added that for those games where Cowgirls will struggle that they show North Lake grit and see the kind of character that they have through those tough times. “We are trying to get better everyday,” said Coach Murphy, “and work on things that we aren’t perfect at.”

More than a team, a brotherhood Page 16 — 2015 Winter Sports Preview Lake County Examiner

By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner

This season’s goal for North Lake boys basketball is to make the sport enjoyable so that the rest will follow. “The guys who have been with me for quite a while also had brothers who have played for me. They know what to expect,” said Coach Brian Baker. “I want them to enjoy basketball.” When the clock hits zero and no matter what the score on the board reads, Coach Baker wants each of his players to walk away with a positive experience, learning life skills and determination. Though the team has strong starters with plenty of practice and skill, their bench isn’t as deep as it could be. The North Lake roster is front-loaded with seven upperclassmen, while processing zero sophomores and six freshmen. Coach Baker is looking to build up the freshmen by giving them as much playing time as possible this season. He was happy to report that this handful of freshmen athletes are coming along practice by practice, adding that with a few games under their belt, they will be able to make the proper adjustment to challenge 2A schools right off the bat. “I think it will be good to go through this tournament to see where we are,” said Coach Brian Baker before the team’s the first weekend of play at Sherman. “We have three returning starters and eight returning basketball players who know what’s going on.” Two years ago, the North Lake system changed so the upperclassmen are still learning the new offense that are they are building on to be an added strength. With the seniors stepping up as is the lowerclassmen, the team looks able

Pleased with how they’re doing in practice, Coach Baker is looking towards them to be the strongholds of the team. Another who is sure to shine is junior Jubal Pierson as the big post. Coach Baker said he has grown from last year and now they just have to refine his skills on the court. A key to the Cowboys’ offense will be senior Tristan Grassman as center. Last season, the Cowboys came up just short in districts, finishing fourth overall in a bittersweet end losing to Triad and Chiloquin. A silver lining was that the margin of loss was a lot narrower in their second meetings against these two teams, giving more hope to overcome their rivals this season. This doesn’t mean that competition won’t be stiff for them in their league. Coach Baker explained that they will realistically land somewhere in the middle of the pack but still being able to make an appearance at districts, a goal that the team has this year. “Hopefully we will peak at the right time,” he said. Through Coach Baker’s 15 years as head coach, he has cultivated a brotherly atmosphere for the student athletes to be comfortable while

they practice and perform. Yearly traditions include Super Bowl parties and over-nighters to help form brotherly relationships so that communication on the court is more organic. Coach Baker hopes that with enough practice and team cohesion that the North Lake squad will fare well on the court.

Working hard for the win By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner For Paisley girls basketball head coach Colleen Withers, it’s integral to push her athletes so much during the work week so that during the games it can be looked at as more of break from the rigorous practices. “Games should be like a vacation,” Coach Withers said. “The number one thing I can say about this team is that they are very hard workers and as a coach that is all we can ask for.” This year the Paisley team is looking to have an experienced roster, though their senior players have been shallow in the play so far, two of which will be out for the first part of the season due to illness and injury. Despite the upperclassmen absence, the team’s lowerclassmen have stepped up into their roles to fill out those missing spots on the court. In the first few games, senior Krysta Colahan has been battling illness but still had the energy to play a few minutes. Last year she was named as the team’s Rebounder of the Year as she moves quickly to the ball. Another senior taking the bench because of injury until at least early January is Emalee Brown, a transfer student from Vale High School. Her power forward position will be filled by Alena Vickerman, who Coach Withers described as courageous on the court, and sophomore Ashley O’Leary, who stepped up last year to contribute well for the team as a freshman. The rest of the seniors are staples of the team with their experience and leadership. Mattee Vickerman is the team’s versatile point guard. “We can throw her around wherever we need her,” said Coach Withers, who then complimented her work ethic over the off-season practices that has become evident in her play. Lizzie Hyde is another mainstay player that can do just about anything on the court as shooting guard and power forward. She will prove to be a great benefit for the squad, equipped with her aggressive blocking, hustle, shooting and especially scoring. “She has a knack for scoring,” said Coach Withers. Last of the seniors is Alyssa Basurto as shooting guard. Coach Withers is excited about her hard work and great attitude, always leading by example. “She’s a quiet leader who shows the team how the game should be done.” Similar to last year, there aren’t set captains throughout the season. Instead, Coach Withers and assistant coaches Matt Withers and volunteer Lauren Gulley will select a set of two or three captains on a weekly basis. The captains will act as a liaison between the players and coaches as well as with the referees when playing games. “If they show hard work during the week, we give them the captain’s privileges,” Coach Withers explained. “We ask that the girls show care for one another and we see that everyone can be a leader.” During conditioning drills in practices, the coaches have been impressed when a few of the girls would finish the drill with them even when they already finished the drill themselves. “We couldn’t be more proud,” said Coach Withers. Her husband Matt, who handles the defensive side of the ball, assists in the coaching duties, while Gulley will handle the offense. Gulley played NCAA Div II basketball at Western Washington University, so her experience as a center changed their perspectives in a lot of aspects of

Broncos boys filled with raw talent By Jimmy Hall Lake County Examiner As with seemingly every sports season, Paisley’s roster is deep with foreign exchange students that may sometimes provide a bit of a hurdle. This year is no different for the Paisley boys basketball team, but their athleticism can make up for a lack of experience. Half of the Paisley’s boys team is filled by athletes who haven’t played the sport competitively. This doesn’t stop Coach Mike Jones from making those necessary steps to ensure that they are more comfortable when taking the ball each game. “We are pretty pleased with the progress made,” he said. “We are inexperienced but athletic.” The average height of the team is an astounding 5’11”, with a few players over six feet tall. Of the 14 players who came out, about nine are “varsity-level,” according to Coach Jones. “It seems that we start over every year by teaching the exchange students those fundamentals and basics about what makes up the sport,” he said, adding that they have to get a basic grasp of the rules before running complicated offensive and defensive schemes. A couple of these varsity-level exchange players are Alex Sada from Mexico and Dominic Bang from South Korea. Coach Jones said that they are providing a good back end on the bench to trade out players when fatigue sets in. Despite their naivety to the competitive side of the sport, the exchange students’ nose is always to the grindstone to help the team whenever they can. “They’re trying to soak up as much as they can each practice and each game,” said Coach Jones. The sole returning

Also returning is sophomore Bryton Jones, Coach Jones looking to him to run the post game and to provide stability and leader-

ship in the line-up. Locals Jack Hyde and Noah Negus are coming back as well to run the fifth and sixth positions, with a great chance of making starting positions and seeing a lot of play time. Though the team is diverse in experience and skill sets, Coach Jones said that they are a competitive and intense group on the court but more low key

off of it. “They are a little more serious minded in contrast with other teams I’ve worked with,” said Coach Jones. While on the court, Coach Jones understands that what will take the most work is to get those

fundamentals down in terms of where each player needs to be on the court, how not to foul, recognizing what the other team is doing and other details of the game. The raw talent that they show with their speed and athleticism contrasts their inexperience. “We are trying to jam a cohesiveness into just a few short months,” he said, “but we are making strides every day.” New this year is assistant coach is Jordan Gulley, who has lived in Paisley as a firefighter in the ranger station for six years. His previous experience is playing college baseball and basketball at Washington State University, so he is looking to bring a fresh perspective to coaching. Paisley is off to a good start with stellar wins over Burns freshmen and Bonanza’s junior varsity, which is sure to give the team as a whole a confidence boost moving into the season. “We aren’t expecting greatness overnight, but will make successful strides each day,” said Coach Jones.
