Preservation Foundation of the Lake County Forest Preserves

2021 Report

A net-zero energy building, also referred to as a zero-energy building, produces enough renewable energy to meet its own annual energy consumption requirements, reducing the use of nonrenewable energy.

A new environmental education facility is under construction at Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods. The new building will use cost-effective measures to reduce energy usage such as:

EPA Indoor Air Plus requirements for paint and materials

A 23.8kW system of rooftop solar panels

REDUCTION IN ENERGY USE

Highest efficiency HVAC systems and equipment Occupancy sensors and daylight sensors throughout

Increased insulation values in the walls and roof

LED lighting throughout the building Bird-friendly glass windows to help reduce bird strikes

Strategic placement of high-performing windows to help regulate temperature

The first phase of construction includes a 3,400-square-foot building with two classrooms, virtual teaching space, a netzero energy interpretive exhibit area and a 1,000-square-foot screened porch for added teaching space. The $5.4 million project involves realigning the

entry road, installing new walkways and an accessible looped educational trail, and extending water, sewer and other utilities. A second phase, which will add two more classrooms, is planned but currently unfunded. This phase is estimated to cost $2.6 million.

The Forest Preserves and the Preservation Foundation received about $3 million in grants and donations for the project, including $2,425,000 from private donors, $513,000 from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation and $50,000 from Medline Cares.

As stewards of healthy landscapes and proponents of climate resiliency, the Lake County Forest Preserves has led the way in sustainable building technologies for more than two decades. The most recent step in this journey is the educational facility at Ryerson, which will be Lake County’s first public building built to achieve net-zero energy.

We are the guardians of the natural capital that sustains the quality of life in Lake County. This project is an extension of that mission. It is critical to our brand and to our 100-Year Vision for Lake County. This project exemplifies who we are and what we do.

We are also in line with the state’s Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, which passed last fall. That legislation set an ambitious target of achieving 40% renewable energy in Illinois by 2030.

Through this net-zero project and others, we are moving the Forest Preserves forward by giving back to the environment, the land and the community. This report details other examples, such as the Grant Woods Forest Preserve seed research project that engages seed producers, conservation organizations, neighbors, volunteers and landowners to build and sustain a demand for climate-adapted seed.

Other projects that have been supported through your generous donations include bee monitoring, the reintroduction of wood frogs, a flora study and an initiative to reintroduce plant species into preserves where the population was lost or severely decimated.

Last month, we celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Preservation Foundation. Thank you for helping move the Forest Preserves forward through your support in 2021 and over the past 15 years. We have come so far and accomplished so much because of you.

We are moving forward with Growing through Change, a climate change resilience project at Grant Woods Forest Preserve in Ingleside that will better prepare us for the future climate.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLIMATE AND WEATHER IS A MATTER OF TIME.

The goal of the Growing through Change project is to learn how to restore resilient native landscapes with plants that can withstand a shifting climate.

We are engaging seed producers, conservation organizations, neighbors, volunteers and landowners to build and sustain a demand for climate-adapted seed.

The project involves restoring 180 acres of former farmland at Grant Woods. The field was sown with 1,900 pounds of native grass seed. One seed mix, spread on two-thirds of the area, followed our typical practice of purchasing seed grown within 250 miles of the county. The other seed mix, spread on the remaining third, was an experiment with seed

sourced from central Missouri and Kentucky.

“The project will demonstrate if adaptability strategies using source-identified seeds from more southern and distant regions, coupled with hydrolog ical restoration, are as successful or more successful than stan dard sourcing strategies,” said Pati Vitt, the director of Natural Resources for the Forest Preserves.

The project is supported by grants through the Preservation Foundation. These include more than $1.1 million in private donations and a $256,000 grant from the Wildlife Conservation Society Climate Adaptation Fund, which is made possible through the generous support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

WEATHER IS SHORT-TERM PATTERNS OF PRECIPITATION AND TEMPERATURE THAT VARY AROUND AN AVERAGE. CLIMATE DESCRIBES THESE AVERAGES OVER DECADES.

The Annual Fund is a source of immediate, flexible support for the Forest Preserves. An Annual Fund grant may be used to pilot a new initiative or untested strategy, leverage an outside grant, or expand on an existing program to reach more people.

The rusty patched bumble bee was recently placed on the U.S. Federal endangered species list. We are funding a county-wide bee monitoring program to determine if specific bee assemblages are associated with certain habitats or landscapes. To date, we have had confirmed sightings of the rusty patched bumble bee at three different forest preserves.

The severe drought in 2021 resulted in total reproductive failure for blue-spotted and tiger salamanders across breeding sites in the southeastern portion of the county. A threeyear grant will assess the status of wood frogs and other amphibians to better understand their resilience to severe drought.

We are studying five plant species that are dangerously close to extinction in our preserves. Enhanced demographic monitoring is taking place as well as hand pollination, seed collection and propagation in order to restore these extremely rare species.

We are working to establish new populations of “Sought After Sixty” species in forest preserve locations. The “Sought After Sixty” list includes plants that are either rare or absent in the forest preserves and serve as critical building blocks of native plant communities. The project also includes new efforts to identify and propagate woodland, prairie and savanna warrior sedges.
