........The film Noir........

Gilda

ollywood was always the official place of film, which everything shines and makes everyone think that the glitter will not ever leave . Although we must admit that was an era in Hollywood that had left its mark, and that era will not come back again. Of course I am speaking about the “film noir” period which used to have so many contrasts. From the one hand you could see a romantic movie and from the other hand a classic gangster film. More specific “Gilda” has got both characteristics and still it is consider to be one of the most famous “film noir” movies of this time. Despite the fact that introduced themeaning of being “femme fatale”there were so much tension between the love triangle-which was completely in contrast-with the fascist climate and the Nazi’s during the World War II. The apotheosis of this film, that makes it unique, it is that introduce the femme fatale theme in film noir movies and for this reason it is considered to be one of the most recognizable. This era of pin-up girls owns it is existence to the Victorian female model in films. “Gilda” is According to all the above “ Gilda” os agreat example of a women who tries to escape from her demons(men) and a woman like Gilda in film noir was a her only weapon is her sexuality social threat those times which had to be which she is not afraid to use in hidden or banned because he would cause order to disorientate them. Gilda’s problems to the male mental balance. It is actual blame is that she speaks up. remarkable that the 93% of critics gave the Fist with her aggressive attitude movie a positive reportbased on fifteen and the provocative (for those reports according to “Rotten Tomatoes” a times)striptease dacing in front review aggregator. Generally the critics of men. Secondly she was using her were enthusiastic with the introduction to tongue as weapon. For Hollinger sexual issues which gave a stimulus debate “Gilda demostrates female resistance between male and female audience. Fascist to male controlled narrative in the climate and the Nazi’s during the World War form of voice over. Her striptease II. Nowadays, the movies it is remembered “[dismantles]” Johnny’s hold on her, as one of the most sucessfil film noir in at the same time as it expresses her the history and has left his impact in other frustation and anger. (Rethinking movies. Firstly it is shown in “ Swashank the femme fatale in film noir ready Redemption” a 1994 film, when Andy Dufrence for her close up, 2009,p:103-104). asks Red to get a poster of Hayworth as Despite the above Gilda had also other gift for his film. Tha poster plays an characteristics that were treating important role in the movie. secondly in male ideology such as narration, “Michael’s Jackson This Is It “ have used self confidence and her deep male some parts from “Gilda” in a version of voice. Simone de Beauvoir claimed “Smooth criminal”. Last but not least the that man is mentally terrified when most obvious is the most recent in 1999film he holds in his arms a conscious “ Nothing Hill” when actress Anna sais being who sizing him up than a doll to her non-famous boyfriend William the of flesh and blood. Many articles Rita used to say: “ They go to bed with have refereed to femme fatale Gilda. Gilda and they wake up with me”. Because of it of professionalism, patriotism, is combination love triangle and gangsterdecency, and desirability in order fascist Buenos wordssuggestingf that a woman’s sexuality could be expressed Vassia Chalkiadaki as a part of her whole being”.

aking into account the amazingly bad (but not bad enough to be good) first attempt to reboot Judge Dredd for the big screen that left regular movie-goers running for the exits and 2000 AD fans with mild brain damage and that not even the presence of Max von Sydow could save, and the current craze for comic book films, one more venture into Mega City One was to be more than expected.

S

o you step in the theatre, strapped and booted for the atrocity that seems to be on the way, ready for the on-screen shower of one of the best characters comic pages have ever witnessed with tanks of mediocrity and cluelessness. But not this time. Travis’ Dredd has drunk with John MacClane, been in a fist fight with Cobra, and flew the Gullfire over Leningrad when Snake was still a rookie. Dredd is an all-out down and dirty bloody mayhem extravaganza of the kind of “grindhouse in the multiplex” that Rodriguez and Tarantino aimed for but got nowhere near, that would put a smile on Sam Peckinpah’s face. First of all, Dredd is a great comic book movie. It doesn’t try to please every mouthbreather with a slight aversion to sunlight but it doesn’t go all the way to the other

side either, along with most comic book films, where it would try to make the character more human or overcomplicate the story with numerous things that the mythology could facilitate, such as corruption in the Hall of Justice, and inevitably fall flat on its face. Dredd chooses a fruitful and sensible middle way where Dredd bleeds but growls as he patches himself up not out of pain but out of true badassness. But it goes far beyond that. It’s a low-trash action flick that, even the most snobbish pseudo-intellectual would have to admit, is balanced with the precision of a master.

I

t begins with the sun setting and ends with the sun rising, thus beautifully visually illustrating the Judge’s dive into a world of drugged vicious criminals that represent everything vile about the city that Dredd has sworn

to protect and his rise above it. Moreover the whole thing is set in one place, a 200-story slum tower block and as the film progresses we follow Dredd and his female sidekick Judge-to-be Anderson, upwards, with each floor becoming more and more difficult to survive, until we reach the slashing-and-slashed deranged ex-prostitute drug lord “final level boss” Ma-Ma.

D

redd is simple and to-the-point. It leaves every moral and psychological implication of being a Judge to be discussed by the fans as it should and remains standing upright. No, you won’t be watching Dredd twice or discussing it for years to come, but after the high-andrenaline panting sweaty mess that will leave you being, maybe that’s not a bad thing. JOHN R APTIS
