This past January, the Memorial Health System was recognized at the Chamber SWLA banquet with the Business Development and Diversity Award. This came on the heals of a recently released report from a career resource website that ranked the Memorial Health System as one of the top three places to work in Lake Charles. This conclusion was based off of data related to salaries, company financial health and employee diversity. We have made great strides in the past decade to advance healthcare in Southwest Louisiana. This award was a welcomed recognition for all of us at Memorial because it put a stamp of validity on the efforts we make to serve people of all walks of life day in and day out. The patients of Memorial are a diverse group. Our doors are open to all regardless of age, race and socioeconomic status, and our employees reflect those whom we serve. We are proud of this diversity. As the largest non-government employer in the lake area, we couldn’t succeed without it. We are proud to reflect the community we serve, because at Memorial Your Healthcare is Personal.

traditional defibrillator,” Dr. Young says. “Having an implantable defibrillator that does not have to be implanted in a patient’s venous system will allow more people to be eligible to receive these lifesaving devices.”
Lake Charles Memorial’s Heart & Vascular program now has a new tool in the fight against heart disease. Memorial Medical Group Interventional Cardiologist Kevin Young, MD, now can implant the Boston Scientific EMBLEM™ Subcutaneous Implantable Defibrillator (S-ICD) System for the treatment of patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. The EMBLEM S-ICD System is the only implantable defibrillator (S-ICD) that is contained completely under the skin to provide protection without touching the heart.
Sudden cardiac arrest is a serious, life-threatening condition that happens abruptly and without warning. During sudden cardiac arrest, the heart’s electrical system malfunctions, and it is no longer able to pump blood to the rest of the body. The lack of blood to the brain causes the person to lose consciousness quickly. If the person does not receive immediate treatment with defibrillation, brain damage and death can occur.
The EMBLEM S-ICD System provides the same protection from sudden cardiac arrest as traditional transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). However, the entirety of the EMBLEM S-ICD System sits just below the skin without the need for thin, insulated wires – known as leads – to be placed into the heart itself. This leaves the heart and blood vessels untouched, which results in a less invasive treatment that avoids potentially serious complications associated with leads in the heart. As a second generation S-ICD, the EMBLEM S-ICD System is a smaller, thinner device that is projected to last 40 percent longer than the previous version, and is enabled for remote patient management.
“For those at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, one treatment option is an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, which may prevent sudden cardiac death,” Dr. Young says. “These implanted devices can sense arrhythmias or irregular heart beats and deliver strong electrical shocks to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat. This kind of therapy has been shown to effectively stop 95 percent or more of dangerously fast heart rhythms. With these devices, 19 out of 20 people will survive sudden cardiac arrest.”
“There are patients out there who have no access to their venous system or are at a high risk of infection or complications with a

The decision to go with the same doctor came from fatherly advice. The decision to go with the same doctor came from fatherly advice.
Ever since Interventional Cardiologist Christopher Thompson, MD, has been in practice, he has known and treated the Foreman family of Iowa. In 1994, back at the start of it all, one of his first patients he treated was Asa Foreman. Joe, as most everyone knows him as, retired after 34 years as a teacher, coach and principal at Iowa High School.
“As the saying goes, “Always listen to your daddy”, Benny says. “With what Dr. Chris did for my dad, we had great confidence in his ability to take care of all of us.”
Since that time, other Foreman men have followed. Three of Asa’s sons, Benny, Bruce and Mike have been treated by Dr. Thompson. His grandson, Justin, is a more recent patient, having been checked out on the last day of 2018. All have the signs of coronary disease on some level. PHYSICIAN REFERRAL • 1-800-494-LCMH (5264)
That confidence and family trust is something Dr. Thompson does not take lightly. He views his time with multiple generations of a family as a privilege and even more special with the relationships he 10
MEMORIAL EVERY BEAT IS PERSONAL.
(L-R) Christopher Thompson, MD, Bruce Foreman, Asa Foreman, Benny Foreman, Lucille Forman and Justin Foreman.
One of the main risk factors of coronary disease is family history. So when Justin felt something wrong in his chest, he didn’t hesitate to go to the ER and get checked out. “Given what my dad and grandpa have experienced in their life, I knew I needed to be looked at too,” Justin says of his spell on New Year’s Eve. “Dr. Thompson knew just what to do and will be there to guide me through this.”
has developed with the Foremans over his 25 year career. “I have gotten to know them on a personal level. Our relationship, I feel, has expanded beyond medicine,” Dr. Thompson says. “We have shared stories about family, about life and history. It’s been a wonderful two-way street of experiences.” Some of the best stories have come from the elder Asa. At the age of 96, life and time have confined him to a bed, but his mind remains strong and able to recall his service in World War II as an assistant crew chief for a B-29 bomber. A floor to ceiling world map in his living room serves as a history lesson, marking the places he served and the many international trips Asa and wife, Lucille, took visiting 40 countries and 47 U.S. states. 11
Treating multiple family members across multiple generations is not something heart doctors come across all too often. Being a part of that family dynamic is a unique experience. “It’s quite remarkable being able to take care of three generations of one family,” Dr. Thompson says. “Two generations is a little more common, but three is more unheard of. It is very rare in cardiology to have the same doctor treat patients across such a wide time frame.” For more information on Memorial Medical Group Heart & Vascular Center, call 337.494.3278.
Physician Spotlight J. Gregory Lugo, MD Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgeon & World Traveler
Dr. Gregory Lugo Memorial Medical Group Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon J. Gregory Lugo has spent three decades operating on the hearts of people all over the U.S. and most recently here in Lake Charles. Still, through it the new challenges and medical advancements continue to bring excitement to his chosen profession. “I became interested in cardiac and pulmonary physiology during senior year of high school,” Dr. Lugo recalls. “My biology teacher was actually a practicing cardiologist too and he gave very detailed lectures on the subject. I always thought I wanted to be a surgeon and I never wavered from that point to become a cardiovascular/ thoracic surgeon.” All of Dr. Lugo’s surgical training took place at the University of Southern California. He then spent the majority of his career in Iowa and Missouri before getting a call about an opening at Memorial two years ago. He came down for a visit and between the people at the hospital and the city itself, he knew it would be a great fit. Heart surgery has changed in many ways over the course of Dr. Lugo’s career. Minimally invasive valve surgery is one example of such a change as patients tend to recover faster and have less discomfort. Dr. Lugo uses small incisions of twoand-a-half to three inch incision instead of a full chest incision to replace or repair damaged heart valves.

When he came to Lake Charles, Dr. Lugo also brought with him the experience with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement or TAVR
12
and was able to help establish a program with his partners at Memorial’s Heart & Vascular Center. This procedure allows diseased heart valves to be replaced through a catheter procedure on those patients who qualify. “The entire post operative recovery process has also changed dramatically in the last thirty years,” Dr. Lugo says. “For instance a standard triple heart bypass in 1990 carried a 2.5 to 3 percent risk of mortality. Today, that same operation has a 0.5 percent risk of mortality. That is a huge improvement.” While it would be out of most people’s comfort zone to work on a patient’s heart, for Dr. Lugo that leap is stepping out and experiencing the world around him as an avid traveler. The different cultures, people and culinary offerings are what attract him the most to the different parts of the world. “My favorite place to visit is Rome. I have been there a handful of times and I never get tired of visiting,” Dr. Lugo says. “I read in a travel book that although the museums and art galleries are a must, just walking through the streets of Rome will give a real sense of history. I appreciate that much of our present day civilization started with the Roman Empire.” Through all his travels, you won’t find Dr. Lugo rushing through his destinations like a modern day Clark Griswold. He instead chooses to take a leisurely approach, soaking in the history as he explores beyond the borders. While he has his favorite spots like Rome, he also has a bucket list of stops he hopes to check off in the future such as Portugal, England, Ireland, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Argentina, Peru, Japan and Viet Nam. You can reach Dr. Lugo’s office by calling 337.494.6799 or go to www.lcmmg.com
Transparency & Data Now Staples of A Quality Heart Care Program The public has a right to know. That is the new mantra for healthcare these days. Public reporting sights on data for just about every type of healthcare specialty continue to burgeon. It’s no longer acceptable to just say you have a quality heart program, it has to be backed by facts. Memorial has worked to build the leading heart program in southwest Louisiana, now the data is starting to back up our hard work. “Memorial performed twice as many open heart surgeries than any other heart surgery program in Lake Charles according to inpatient 2017 and 2018 data and three times as many for thoracic and vascular surgeries. While volume is a indicator of patients trusting their care to our heart specialists, it also is associated with improved outcomes,” according to Dr. Gregory Lugo, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon at Memorial. “Increased surgical volumes correlate with improved outcomes due to a more experienced surgical team, ICU team and step down team being able to handle more complex cases.” STS Public Reporting The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, a national leader in health care transparency and accountability, has taken the lead in reporting and comparing the quality of surgical outcomes across the nation. The STS Public Reporting initiative, allows heart surgery programs to voluntarily report their surgical outcomes to the public on the STS website. The STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (ACSD) is the world’s premier clinical outcomes registry for adult cardiac surgery. It represents more than 90% of the groups that perform cardiac surgery in the United States. Open heart surgery data shows Memorial with two out of three stars for all, but one of the quality indicators. The overall picture shows that Memorial ranks as good, sometimes better, as any other hospital in the state of Louisiana, as well as in neighboring states, that voluntarily report their data to STS. Carechex Public Reporting CareChex® is an information service of Quantros, Inc. CareChex provides clinical, financial, and patient satisfaction findings to consumers, providers, and purchasers of U.S. medical care. Unlike other publicly available quality ratings, CareChex provides a composite evaluation of the quality of inpatient medical care incorporating five (5) separate outcomes of care measures. For access to provider quality ratings, visit www.CareChex.com. While, other quality rating services only evaluate one aspect of patient care, such as mortality rates. CareChex® multi‐dimensional methodology evaluates five (5) types of inpatient medical care outcomes expressed as a single composite quality score. Memorial’s Interventional Coronary Care was ranked in the TOP 100 in the Nation, #1 in Louisiana and #1 in Southwest Louisiana for Medical Excellence in Interventional Coronary Care, as well as #1 in Southwest Louisiana for Medical Excellence and Patient Safety in Cardiac Care and #1 in Patient Safety for Major Cardiac Surgery, Coronary Bypass Surgery, Heart Attack and Heart Failure Treatment.
