Lesion Excision System Lake Charles Memorial Radiology is the first in the State of Louisiana to deploy the new Intact Breast Lesion Excision System, a minimally invasive excision performed at the time of biopsy on high-risk breast lesions using ultrasound and stereotactic guidance without the need for conventional surgery. “This is a breakthrough procedure for women who want answers to what is going on with their body,” says Dr. Richard Martinez, Lake Charles Memorial Radiologist. “We can get the biopsy we need for testing without subjecting our patients to unnecessary surgery and risks.” High-risk breast lesions are labeled as such because they have elevated chance to become cancerous in the future, prompting many patients to opt for their swift removal. However, 80 percent of such lesions are benign, meaning patients are being subjected to unnecessary surgery and all the associated risks. Medtronic, the nation’s largest medical device manufacturer, developed IntactTM to excise breast tissues via a small incision and completely remove all suspect tissue for the breast. The new system deploys a basket-like structure and is guided to lesions using ultrasound or stereotactic imaging. It can remove lesion up to two centimeters in size. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and the incision is closed with only a small bandage and heals quickly. Using IntactTM, patients no longer have to go under general anesthesia, which carries an elevated risk of medical complication, provides quicker recovery time and far less physical discomfort. For more information, contact the Lake Charles Memorial Breast Health Center at 337.494.4755.

Memorial for Women Celebrates 15 years!
After celebrating thousands of babies born at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women, birthdays are nothing new. This birthday celebration is a bit different, though— the birthday they’re celebrating is their own! Since opening its doors 15 years ago, Memorial for Women has provided the highest level of service with the most stateof-the-art facility specifically for women in the Southwest Louisiana community. “This center was the first of its kind in Southwest Louisiana. Rather than focusing on the baby and the mother separately, the focus was instead on family-centered care,” says Marilyn McSwain, Chief Nursing Officer for Lake Charles Memorial and Administrator of Memorial for Women. “It was new and different, but the research showed—this is the better way to have a baby.” Rather than having a room to labor, a different room to deliver, and a third room to recover in, women stay in the same room for the entirety of their stay. Another massive change was the encouragement for baby to room-in with the mother after birth. 6
The response to the new campus was gradual, but positive—over a thousand babies were born before the end of Memorial for Women’s first year of existence. They did, however, face some challenges in those early days. “This was a completely different way of giving birth,” says McSwain. “We were fighting misconceptions in the community and working toward a more forward-thinking approach. The commitment of our doctors and nurses contributed to the community’s change in perception. It went from ‘they make you keep your baby at Memorial for Women’ to ‘they don’t let you keep your baby’ at other locations.” In overcoming these challenges, the facility was awarded many times over in the last few years, including a recognition as a Center of Excellence in Women’s Health Surgery from the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery; Excellence in Promoting Infant Safe Sleep Practices from the Department of Health; The Gift award for Excellence in Promoting the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding from the Department of Health; and a designation from the March of Dimes for reducing the number of elective inductions/births before 39 weeks gestation.
The Present
The Future
Currently, Memorial for Women serves the largest percentage of women in Southwest Louisiana. While a large focus is on childbirth, they serve women from puberty through the rest of their lives. They’ve gained a reputation for being a family friendly birth center, a center for patientfocused women’s health practices, as well as an unparalleled neonatal specialty care unit.
Despite the amazing achievements of Memorial for Women, they are not planning to settle any time soon. Over the next several years, there are plenty of projects in store to expand and improve the level of services offered to the women and families of Southwest Louisiana. Construction is underway to add 14 beds and two operating rooms to the campus. They hope to eventually be averaging 2,000 births a year—a goal that is becoming closer every month. The approach to childbirth is changing across the nation. McSwain says that whatever the future holds, Memorial for Women is ready for it.
They’ve also recently expanded the early labor department, allowing for mothers experiencing symptoms of early labor or any concerns throughout their pregnancy to be seen quickly and comfortably. Going from three beds to eight beds, they are now able to see the 450 patients that come in every month more easily.
“The future of the women’s campus depends entirely on the future of the community,” says McSwain. “We are a hospital for the women of Southwest Louisiana, so as this community and their needs continue to grow and evolve, so will our hospital.”
In addition to its 15th anniversary, Memorial for Women will also be celebrating a significant milestone. This spring they should reach a total of 25,000 babies born at the campus! “My first job out of nursing school was opening the first neonatal unit at the main campus of Memorial,” McSwain recalls. “Memorial has consistently been on the front lines of women’s health care, so to be celebrating this milestone at the women’s campus is incredible, and we’re proud of the hard work we’ve put in to get us here!”

Cover Story INNOVATIVE, MODERN, COORDINATED ~ CRITICAL CARE IS HERE. ...and it’s backed by the region’s largest, comprehensive health care system, Memorial.
Getting to the right place at the right time to receive the right care is a matter of life or death. Critical care requires the full support of a TEAM of experts and specialists all in ONE place. Every step of your care has been carefully considered from treatment to recovery because a heart attack, stroke or fractured hip doesn’t stop at the emergency room.
Emergency Center
Telestroke Program
Memorial’s newest milestone, the 40-bed, 26,000 sq. ft. Emergency Center, doubles the size of our previous ER and includes a CT and digital x-ray technology in the center with specialized treatment areas for critical care, mental health and fast track non-critical emergencies. There are 6 trauma bays for the trauma program currently in the development stages.
Memorial’s TeleStroke Program is in partnership with Tulane Medical Center. The program is a form of telemedicine that provides Memorial patients with enhanced in-house stroke care and 24-hour access to Tulane Medical Center’s specialized stroke experts. The collaboration brings together innovative TeleStroke equipment, the Memorial emergency team and specialized care from Tulane’s Joint Commission-certified comprehensive stroke center to evaluate, consult, diagnoses, treat or transfer the patient to the appropriate stoke care facility. Using TeleStroke system carts and a two-way live video, audio and image sharing system, consulting stroke neurologist and neurosurgeons from Tulane Medical Center can evaluate a patient in real time to diagnose a stroke and determine the best course of action.
As the largest, full-service health system in Southwest Louisiana with the most specialists, Memorial provides board certified emergency medicine physician coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with the support of medical and surgical specialists.

Trauma Program
Unit is located on the 9th floor of the main campus with nurseat-bedside care, along with our 10,180 sq. ft., 3rd floor Surgical Intensive Care Unit, currently under renovation, located on the 3rd floor adjacent to our expanded and renovated surgery center and heart catheterization rooms. Memorial has 32 critical care beds to support the growing needs of our community.
Memorial has been designated by the Louisiana Emergency Response Network (LERN) as having Trauma Program, which is the 18-month groundwork for becoming the Level III Certified Trauma Center for Southwest Louisiana. LERN is an agency of the Louisiana state government with the responsibility of developing and maintaining a statewide system of care coordination for patients suddenly stricken by serious traumatic injury or timesensitive illness (such as heart attack and stroke). It is a system also designated to serve as a vital healthcare resource in the face of larger scale emergencies and natural disasters.
Pediatric Intensive Care The only Level II Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is Southwest Louisiana is on the 6th floor of our main campus. Memorial’s PICU provides 24-hour care by a multidisciplinary team under the supervision of the area’s only board certified intensive care specialist, along with board certified pediatricians and pediatric critical care nurses who provide specialized care to critically ill children. Common conditions treated include severe asthma, complications from diabetes, severe infection, heart abnormalities or orthopedic accidents.
Neonatal Intensive Care
Hospital participation in LERN is voluntary. Through the participation agreement, hospitals define the level of trauma care resources typically available at their facility and agree to routinely notify LERN of changes in the availability of their trauma care resources using Resource Management (LERN). The agreement also requires hospitals to utilize LERN entry criteria and destination protocols.
For premature and newborn critical care, Memorial for Women’s campus has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit specially equipped and staffed by a team of dedicated registered nurses and neonatal nurse practitioners who provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, under the medical supervision of board certified neonatologists. The NICU utilizes advanced transport incubators that provides a portable heated environment, state-of-the-art ventilation and cardiac monitoring during transport of the most fragile infants.
Surgical & Medical Intensive Care Critically ill patients in need of ongoing specialized cardiac, stroke, and/or pulmonary monitoring, or recovering from orthopedic trauma or open heart surgery have the latest intensive care technology, diagnostics and care at Memorial. Memorial houses two of the area’s largest intensive care units, one designated for surgical care and the other for medical care. Our newest state-of-the art, 15,102 sq ft. Medical Intensive Care

Physician Spotlight Joseph Semien, Jr., MD OB/GYN & Inspirational Author The book is called Pulse of Perseverance. It’s the story of three black doctors on their journey to success. In addition to Dr. Semien, it includes the personal journeys of Pierre Johnson, MD, an OB/GYN in Chicago and Maxime Madhere, MD, a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist in Baton Rouge. All three attended Xavier University in New Orleans with the ultimate goal of becoming doctors.
Today, Joseph Semien, Jr., MD is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist with the Memorial Medical Group. You can find him working the exam rooms, delivery suites, and operating rooms of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women. A native of New Orleans, Dr. Semien’s road to high-profile professional achievement was a rocky one. During his teenage years, he found himself living the “street life”, getting involved with selling drugs while hanging with the wrong crowd in the inner city of New Orleans. It is a life experience he now details and shares, in a new book, to inspire others to never give up.
“We essentially lived on the second floor of the Xavier University library, putting in the effort that was necessary in order to be successful. The institution served as a launch pad for our future endeavors, by giving us the confidence that we needed to thrive. From there, we all went different routes,” Dr. Semien says. “I went to get my masters at Tulane. The ultimate goal for all of us was medical school. We still held each other accountable throughout the years, and all three of us are now board-certified physicians.”
“It wasn’t that I grew up in a bad situation. My mother was actually a minister and my father was a working man,” Dr. Semien recalls about his childhood. “Nonetheless, there were some questionable decisions that I made during my teenage years that really could have changed the trajectory of my life. Some of those experiences are discussed in the book. However, the book is a deeply personal story of how myself and my brothers overcame many trials and tribulations to achieve our goals. There were many challenges along the way, but we didn’t let our past experiences define what our future would be.”
The tales of the trio’s difficult journey is what Dr. Semien hopes will be the first step in changing the negative societal perceptions of young black men. Earlier this year, they formed a foundation also called Pulse of Perseverance. Their mission: To empower and inspire young black men to work towards their goals by giving them a blueprint and resources for success, and in doing so, redefine the portrayal of the black male. “We wanted to bring cultural awareness and exposure. When you look on TV, there aren’t many models of success for young people of color, particularly outside of sports and entertainment.” The book and foundation are all self-funded and any money made from book sales goes directly back into their foundation to work with nonprofits, educators, youth organizations, mentors, churches and counselors. Schools in Chicago have taken notice, with some implementing the book into their curriculum. Xavier University is also giving every incoming freshman a copy. “A lot of times, the kids we are trying to reach, are not exposed to certain opportunities in life. It is a glaring indictment on

our unequal education systems. The youth then turn to other alternatives early and forget about the educational aspects, but can you actually blame them?” Dr. Semien says. “The majority of the kids I mentor say they want to play sports. I believe, at least in part, that those are the answers because that is all they’re exposed to early on in life. I get very few that say they want to be a physician, and we all know that
representation matters. By opening up about our personal lives in the book, we hope that the kids can relate, and use our model as a stepping stone for their own success” You can find additional information about the book and foundation at www.thepulseofp3.com.
