Deep Brain Stimulation Lake Charles Memorial now offers Medtronic Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Therapy, an FDA approved treatment option for those with Parkinson’s disease, tremors and involuntary muscle contractions whose symptoms are no longer adequately controlled by medication alone. Neurologist Murali Bogavalli, MD, MPH, with Memorial Medical Group, offers patients this innovative brain therapy. He is fellowship-trained and board certified in neurology and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of various general and neuromuscular diseases.

Medtronic Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Therapy

“A specially-trained neurosurgeon places a small, pacemaker-like device under the skin in the chest, and very thin wires connect the device to the brain. This device sends electronic signals to targeted areas of the brain that control movement,” Dr. Bogavalli says. “After it is implanted, I program the device and adjust the settings to meet the specific patient’s changing needs. While DBS is not a cure, individuals may achieve greater relief over stiffness, shaking, and difficulty moving, reduce the amount of medication needed and improve quality of life.”

for Parkinson’s, Tremors and Involuntary Muscle Contractions

How DBS Helps

What Is the Right Time for DBS?

Deep brain stimulation with medications:

Parkinson’s is a progressive disease. The symptoms get worse over time. During the course of the disease, there is a period when deep brain stimulation can do the most good to help control your symptoms. If you wait too long, DBS will not be an option for you.

Provides 5 additional hours of good movement control each day compared to medication alone.

Improves quality of life more than medications alone.

Makes it easier to do routine daily activities like take a bath, get dressed, write clearly, and drink from a glass.

Significantly reduces medication use, which may mean fewer medication-related side effects such as dizziness and uncontrolled movements.

Talk to your primary care doctor to find out if DBS Therapy is right for you. Physicians may refer patients to Dr. Bogavalli’s office by calling 337.480.7900.

www.lcmh.com/dbs Is DBS Safe? •

DBS is an FDA-approved therapy for symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It is not an experimental treatment.

DBS keeps your treatment options open. The system can be turned off and may be removed.

DBS has been helping people for over 25 years.

DBS Therapy is not for everyone, so it’s important to talk with our DBS specialists about the benefits and the risks for you personally.

construction zone Building a Better Patient Experience Cancer Center Technology Advancements

In an effort to serve a growing number of patients who are trusting their cancer care to us, Lake Charles Memorial Cancer Center is adding a second linear accelerator to its radiation oncology services. The system utilizes the latest 4-D advanced imaging techniques to verify the patient’s tumor position during treatment. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) delivers high doses of radiation directly to cancer cells by varying, or modulating, the intensity of the radiation beam. The shape of the resulting dose distribution is tightly matched to the shape of the tumor, sparing healthy tissue. The Trilogy rotates around the patient delivering radiotherapy from different angles at higher doses, more quickly and with greater accuracy. Real-time positioning manages tumor motion during radiation therapy. The computer-aided technique synchronizes the radiation therapy with a patient’s breathing patterns.

This “gated” radiation treatment enables doctors to safely treat breast, lung and abdominal cancers with radiation therapy, while sparing healthy tissue surrounding the cancer mass. It also allows for fewer treatment sessions. The Trilogy linear accelerator can treat cancer anywhere in the body. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy or IMRT can be used to treat tumors that might have been considered untreatable in the past due to close proximity of vital organs and structures. IMRT is being used to treat tumors in the brain, breast, head and neck, liver, lung, nasopharynx, pancreas, prostate and uterus. A powerful computer program optimizes a treatment plan based on a physician’s dose instructions and information about tumor size, shape and location in the body.

enhancing the admissions experience

surgery expansion

Expansion of the surgery unit is wrapping up. Two new operating rooms were added to the unit, along with a new, larger waiting room. This follows renovations in 2013 that added two operating rooms and a state-ofthe-art Post Anesthesia Care Unit.

Patients will soon be able to complete all their hospital admission procedures in one central place. Renovations are currently underway on the first floor of the medical office building located by the atrium. The space was previously occupied by The Eye Clinic and will soon house Admissions and Memorial Medical Group Internal Medicine. 6

Emergency Department Expansion

kitchen renovations

Lake Charles Memorial Emergency Department expansion and renovation will wrap up this fall. The project includes renovating the two trauma rooms, incorporating a digital CT scanner inside the emergency department, adding a new enlarged waiting room, triage stations, a fasttrack area, 31 patient beds and a specific treatment area for mental health patients. When done, more than $15 million will have been invested in doubling the size of the entire department and renovating the existing space, giving emergency services 27,000 square feet to treat patients for all levels of injuries and critical care including orthopedic trauma, strokes and heart attacks.

A multi-million dollar renovation is underway at Memorial’s main campus as a complete overhaul of the hospital’s kitchen and dietary areas. It is the first major kitchen renovation since the hospital was built in 1952. The upgrades will give the hospital state-ofthe-art kitchen services to better serve patients and visitors.

of 65,000 square feet and 102 beds will be available to treat the behavioral health needs of Southwest Louisiana.

The region’s newest and largest state-of-the-art behavioral health Archer Institute at Memorial will be a total of 65,000 square feet serving both inpatient and outpatient needs. The $19 million Archer Institute at Memorial will be built in three phases.

Patients will no longer need to go to the emergency room to access psychiatric services. They will be able to go directly to the new hospital and receive a free assessment and recommendation on the type of treatment they may need, whether that is outpatient care, day program or inpatient hospitalization.

The first phase is set to open this fall and will consist of two units: a 28 bed adult unit and a 14 bed adolescent unit. The current adult unit at Memorial’s main campus on the 10th floor will be converted to a geriatric unit, resulting in a 30-bed, Medicare certified unit.

Psychiatrist Dr. Dale Archer, Jr, made a major donation to the new hospital. It will be named to honor Dr. Archer’s legacy as a leader and mental health advocate in Southwest Louisiana.

Two other phases will be added to the Archer Institute in the future: two additional 28 bed units and a medical office building for outpatient programs. When all phases are completed, a total 7

TeleSitter

Patient Monitoring Technology

Ensuring that patients are safe, even when they are alone in the room.

PHYSICIAN REFERRAL • 1-800-494-LCMH (5264)

8

At Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, patient safety and privacy are our highest priorities. For this reason, Memorial has implemented TeleSitter, an in-room patient monitoring device that helps decrease a patient’s risk of injury. Injuries can result from falls, potentially aggressive patient behavior, substance abuse withdrawal, pulling at tubes/lines, etc. The system is used on a case-by-case basis.

How TeleSitter Works: TeleSitter monitors patients to ensure they are safe, even if they are alone in the room. A video camera and two-way audio allows a trained staff member to see and speak to patients, when they are not able to be in the room. When they are trying to get up, the staff member will ask the patient to stay in bed until a healthcare provider arrives in the room to provide help. Staff members will monitor patients from a central room by watching a video feed. They can see the patient all of the time—except when TeleSitter is set to “privacy mode.” However, the only time they can hear the patient is when they talk to them over the speaker. TeleSitter does not ever record video or audio. A member of the nursing staff is always available whenever the patient needs anything. Patients are encouraged to use the nurse call button to ask for help. When the TeleSitter light is on, the staff member can see the patient. When the light is off, the privacy cover is on, and they cannot see the patient. The privacy cover is used when the doctor or nurse is providing care, and when the patient is dressing, bathing, or using the toilet. When the doctor or nurse is finished, they will ask the staff member to remove the privacy cover and resume monitoring. The patient’s nurse along with other clinical staff will decide if the patient no longer needs visual observation using the monitor. When the patient’s health has improved, and they are safe from falls or injury, TeleSitter monitoring can be stopped.

and replacement. Navio™ robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacement is now available at Lake Charles Memorial. Partial and total knee replacement removes diseased bone while sparing healthy tissue and bone. Orthopedic Surgeon Robert Duarte, MD, with Orthopaedic Specialists, a part of the Memorial Medical Group, was the first to perform robotic-assisted total knee replacement on February 28 and offer patients the revolutionary advanced precision of the Navio™ surgical system in Southwest Louisiana. The Navio system provides robotic-controlled assistance, aiding in precise surgical outcomes for patients living with knee pain caused by early to mid-stage osteoarthritis. Navio surgery differs from other robotics-assisted surgery with unique algorithmic technology which allows for handheld instrumentation that assists surgeons. “We re-create a model of the patient’s knee’s movement and bone anatomy using computer-assisted virtualization that doesn’t require having the patient undergo a CT scan,” Dr. Duarte says. “Using this virtual model, I plan the location of the implant and balance the knee through bending. Finally, using the Navio hand piece, I then prepare the bone to accept the implant.”

11

The end result is partial and total knee replacements that give patients a return to daily activity and decrease in pain. During the procedure, the diseased portion of the bone is replaced with an implant that spares healthy bone and returns function. There are no pre-operative procedures required. The difference is in the tools Dr. Duarte uses. Navio is a robotic-controlled smart instrument that delivers the precision of robotics into Dr. Duarte’s hands, allowing for accurate and predictable bone resurfacing and replacement. To find out if robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacement is right for you, schedule an appointment with Dr. Duarte at 337.494.4900.

Physician Spotlight Alyson Jones, MD Physiatrist & College Basketball Player

Dr. Alyson Jones was a four year forward and center at Southern Miss.

Up on the second floor of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, Dr. Alyson Jones is busy at work helping to restore function and independence in patients on her inpatient rehabilitation unit. She is a physiatrist. Translation – a physical medicine doctor. “We take care of patients that can’t go home after a stroke, brain injuries, joint replacements, multi-trauma or just medically debilitated and can’t function normally at home,” she says. “They spend a couple of weeks with us. We try to simulate their home environment so they feel more confident about going home.” Dr. Jones returned home to Lake Charles in 2016. She moved from Jackson, Mississippi with her three daughters, and husband. Ironically, the exact location where she spends most of her professional life is the same place where she began life. Dr. Jones was born at Lake Charles Memorial, and the labor and delivery unit was once housed in the same location where her rehab unit now sits. “This has been my family’s hospital since I can remember,” Dr. Jones recalls. “This is where everyone goes and I have a pretty big family. You make sure you do the best job that you can because you are taking care of your own family and your own community. It makes it much more personable than other places I have worked. It makes you feel good inside knowing that you are trying to help out your own community.”
