Having recently reached a milestone of 12 months in my appointment as Managing Director of Broad, I feel privileged to lead such a fantastic team. Engaging on a personal level with our people, clients and projects are some of the reasons why I love what I do.
At Broad, we work hard to differentiate ourselves in the market by constantly reviewing and refining our approach to business. Over the past year, we have made great strides in Broad’s development and a main focus for 2014 is to strengthen and build our relationships with our clients, consultants and supply chain. To stay responsive to our clients’ needs, a revised structure and approach to strategic management have been implemented to better reflect Broad’s national business. The structure involves state business units, led by individual managers who form the Broad Senior Leadership Team.
Strategic Management
These changes effectively position Broad to respond to work opportunities, as well as embed innovative and solutions-based thinking to deliver projects efficiently and effectively – on time, on budget, and to a high quality and safety standard. Broad recorded a solid year in 2013, meeting all of our commercial targets, while continuing to invest in our people and the communities in which we operate. Broad was also successful in securing some significant projects across the country and I look forward to further exciting and challenging projects coming on line as we continue to explore the market in 2014.
The team works hard to live our core values and demonstrate the fundamental strengths that have made Broad what it is today. We are committed to attracting the best people from across Australia and around the world to join our team – exceptional people who bring the highest level of expertise and consistently outperform our clients’ expectations.
The pipeline of work is looking positive for Broad nationally, after recent awards in the education and health sectors, including Brisbane State High School and stages one and two of the Dubbo Hospital redevelopment.
Our long-term vision, strategic management, and passion to innovate, deliver and excel, make Broad an efficient and effective partner for clients within a competitive industry.

Industry Insight
Capability Focus The recently awarded Brisbane State High School, Queensland.
Clients are expecting and requesting more from contractors, focusing on value for money, certainty of delivery, quality and safety.
Jarrod Margaria National Business Development Manager
Jarrod joined Broad in February 2004, and as part of the revised national structure, has recently taken on a key advisory role as National Business Development Manager. This role focuses on a collective approach to building and strengthening relationships with clients. He writes the below.
Building Australia’s Infrastructure Australia’s construction activity is projected to be reasonably healthy over the next few years, with a predicted surge in social infrastructure, mixed-use accommodation and health facilities. Although there is a solid pipeline of work, the industry has become highly competitive and we are starting to see a trend in larger contractors tendering on smaller scale projects, as well as reduced margins to secure new work. Clients are expecting and requesting more from contractors, focusing on value for money, certainty of delivery, quality and safety. As a point of difference, Broad are constantly revising their approach to winning new work, offering the latest techniques, technologies and innovations to ensure efficient and effective project delivery. Broad offers clients a diverse set of capabilities and is well positioned to

service the needs of, and deliver, high quality projects for clients across the country. In my role as National Business Development Manager, I provide clients with a single point of contact and personal approach to understanding their forecasts and pipeline of work. Recent project awards include the Dubbo Hospital Redevelopment in New South Wales and Brisbane State High School in Queensland, which are both examples of Broad’s approach to providing greater value to our clients and their projects through early contractor involvement (ECI). During ECI phases, Broad works closely with clients to identify and develop price suitable options that deliver significant efficiencies and cost savings. ECI work can be of significant benefit to the success of any development, offering early build ability and methodology reports.
Education
Project Experience - Education
High quality education facilities are essential components for successful urban and metropolitan development. Broad has played a significant part in the improvement of national social infrastructure and to date has delivered approximately $500 million in student accommodation and education facilities across the country.
Broad’s two decades of national project experience in the education sector varies from specialist chemical laboratories to student accommodation projects and large scale and complex public private partnerships (PPPs). The success of any project relies heavily on the capability of the entire delivery team, and Broad has experienced and dedicated people, with exceptional project and specific educational sector experience. Jonathan Back joined Broad in 2004 as a Site Manager and has worked on a variety of projects since his appointment. He has a strong competency within the education sector and has led design and delivery teams for many school projects in both Western Australia and Queensland. “I am very passionate about school facilities as it gives me a real sense of achievement when a school facility is well designed and constructed, and I know it will provide a good learning environment for school children for many years to come,” Jonathan said. Most notably within the education sector, Jonathan was heavily involved in the Aspire Schools Consortium PPP project, and a key member of the design and construction delivery team of the six primary schools and one secondary school for the Queensland

Government. The Aspire project concluded for Broad earlier in the year and was delivered on time, on budget and to a high quality and safety standard. Vince White, Executive Director of Infrastructure Operations for the Queensland Government’s Department of Education, Training and Employment, sent a letter of commendation to Broad praising its competency of work. He writes: “From the outset of the project, Broad worked closely with the Department to deliver high quality outcomes. Broad also responded immediately to any concerns raised and this resulted in an excellent working relationship throughout the project.” Nikki Paton has worked with Broad as a Design Manager since July 2010 and has been involved with various student accommodation projects in Victoria, including Monash University NRAS Student Accommodation in Clayton, Deakin University Student Accommodation in Geelong, and Urbanest Student Accommodation in Melbourne’s CBD.
