These projects are featured in this magazine and demonstrate Broad’s diverse range of capabilities and high quality standards. I am also pleased to announce that Broad has been successful in a number of projects across the country including the development of Kings Square 4 and a Metronode Data Centre in Western Australia, and a new college in New South Wales. The Broad team are proud to have delivered our new West Australian premises located at 202 Pier Street, Perth. This is an exciting time for the Broad team who joined Leighton Contractors, Ngarda and Visionstream in the one building on 23 September 2013. This edition includes a sneak peak of our new office as well as our new address and contact details.
My transition to Managing Director has been a very busy but rewarding experience.
I am pleased to announce that Broad was presented with a 2013 West Australian Master Builders - Bankwest Excellence in Construction Award - Best Industrial Building for the Parts Distribution Centre project at the Crown Perth on Saturday, 22 June. Terminal 2 at Perth Airport was also recognised as a finalist in the Best Public Use Building category. Mount Sheridan Plaza Expansion and Refurbishment project was also awarded at the Master Builders Far North Queensland Housing and Construction awards in the Retail Facilities over $5m category. A new college for the University of New England Armidale Campus, NSW
The Broad NSW team have been awarded a new college for the University of New England. Located at the Armidale Campus, the project comprises of four new accommodation buildings that will house 210 beds, common rooms, study rooms, break-out room, laundry and dining facilities, external courtyards and relaxation areas, as well as administrative offices and stores. The building will be constructed using prefabricated bedroom modules, which will be completed off site, transported and craned into position in a completed state. All other areas will be constructed using traditional construction methods.

Leighton Properties awarded the Broad WA team the Kings Square 4 (KS4) commercial office development in the new subdivision created from the old Perth Entertainment Centre site, in the heart of Perth’s CBD. This is the second commercial office development awarded to Broad in the precinct. Works will comprise of two A-Grade, 11 storey buildings - KS2 (18,500 sqm) and KS4 (13,000 sqm).
Broad Managing Director, Dean Goodliffe said “This is a significant win for the Broad team. It speaks to the success of Broad’s strategic direction and growth of the company and brings our work in hand to over $600 million. The team look forward to working with Leighton Properties in the development of this exciting new precinct that will further enhance Perth city’s appeal for residents, workers and visitors alike.” The buildings commence the first stage of development at the site and form part of the new Perth City Link project, a major urban renewal initiative of the West Australian State Government to bridge the existing railway and link the CBD with cultural and entertainment precincts of Northbridge.

The buildings will target a 5 Star Green Star – Office Design v3 rating from the Green Building Council of Australia and a 5 Star NABERS energy rating. Broad’s Green Star and NABERS capabilities are evident through the outstanding results achieved on 130 Stirling Street and Alluvion office developments in Perth’s CBD. Completion of KS2 and KS4 are expected in 2015

Kings Square Sod Turning On Monday, 17 June 2013, the first sod was turned marking the official commencement of construction at one of Perth’s most significant new developments, Kings Square. The Minister for Planning, the Hon. John Day, officiated the sod turning event along with Leighton Holdings Board and Executives, developers Leighton Properties and contractors Broad and John Holland. Leighton Properties Managing Director Mark Gray said Kings Square would be a step change in Perth’s ongoing growth and development as a world class city. “Kings Square is a master-planned precinct that will be the prime commercial, residential and leisure hub in the very centre of Perth.
It will offer new world class facilities designed to take the traditional idea of the working environment into the next generation as a new urban place for working, living and recreating in Perth,” Mr Gray said. Broad Managing Director, Dean Goodliffe said “With Perth being one of Australia’s hotspots for growth, such demand has presented some unique opportunities for the building and construction industry. We are very excited to have been awarded this work in the Kings Square precinct, and look forward to working with Leighton Properties and associated partners in the development of what will stand as an iconic landmark for the city of Perth.” Kings Square 1, 2 and 3 represent the first stage of the planned development of the entire subdivision. Completion of all three buildings is expected in mid 2015

An official sod turning of the University of New England’s (UNE) Student Accommodation Facility, marked a significant milestone in the institution’s College Redevelopment Project. UNE Chancellor, the Honourable John Watkins and Vice Chancellor and CEO, Professor Jim Barber, officially turned the sod on Friday, 23 August 2013 to mark the start of construction. Mr Watkins said the construction of the new college would cement UNE’s position as Australia’s preeminent collegiate University. The new college will comprise of more than 200 studio and one bedroom self-catered apartments complete with en-suites, modernising and expanding the residential options available to students. Professor Barber said today marked a major strategic milestone for UNE. “The new college is the first stage of that Project, which in the years to come will eventually see upgrades carried out at all colleges” he said. Construction of the new accommodation facility is expected to be completed March 2014

WorkZone is the third design and construct project that Broad has completed for Charter Hall in Perth’s CBD and showcases Broad’s abilities in green building and sustainable development. The project was completed on time and within budget despite working to a very tight timeframe to complete the works. Riverside Waterbank, Perth
Completed Projects
After the successful completion of Stage One of the Riverside Waterbank project in January 2012, Broad was subsequently awarded Stages two and three of the forward works. The Riverside development is being undertaken to transform the eastern gateway to Perth by creating a cosmopolitan waterfront community and tourist destination with a range of entertainment, commercial, retail, civic and residential uses that take advantage of its unique location. Stage 1 of the works involved the relocation of an existing 1200 mm diameter stormwater pipe that ran through the proposed development area. Stages two and three of the project saw the importation of some 240,000 ccm of sand fill for use as preloading to consolidate the existing ground ahead of the subsequent development. Additionally, these works included the relocation of existing roads and the construction of new roads to service the new development as well as to maximise the available development area. All three stages have now reached practical completion

Stirling Road Underpass, Perth The Broad civil team was awarded the Stirling Road Pedestrian Underpass by the Town of Claremont. The project involved the construction of a pedestrian underpass in the existing Fremantle/Perth rail line. The construction work was split into three phases: 1.

Easter shutdown works, which allowed a continuous 72 hour window within which to complete the works.

Post shutdown works.
The shutdown works were completed and handed back to the client ahead of time with seven hours to spare

Terminal 1 Forecourt Roads, Perth International Airport T1 Forecourt Roads Stage 1 project at Perth Airport formally reached Practical Completion on Thursday, 8 August 2013. The works involved the realignment of the existing Horrie Miller Drive, construction of the T2 short term car park including associated storm water drainage and electrical lightning, and a new taxi holding area. Successful delivery of these works required working carefully around existing services to ensure no impact to airport operations

Metronode Data Centre, Silverwater The Broad NSW team reached Practical Completion of the Metronode Data Centre – Silverwater on 19 July 2013. This state of the art two storey modular Data Centre houses the NSW State Government Education and Health departments located in Sydney’s inner west industrial district of Silverwater.
The works for Silverwater included an early works package, remediation works and construction of the first of 6 stages.
The facility was constructed for Metronode, a member of Nextgen Group of companies, which is 30 per cent owned by Leighton Contractors, who are contracted to supply the facility to the NSW State Government. The data halls are then leased out to various Government departments.
Broad NSW also completed works on their third Data Centre project in Unanderra, South of Wallongong for Metronode on 30 August 2013. This centre forms part of the same contract as Silverwater. The operation of the two sites will be linked by a Fibre Optic link

The project is a mix of traditional construction and prefabricated data halls from the UK, delivered to and assembled on site. The high security facility includes essential services plant room, tech space and data halls. The facility has been successful in achieving a Tier III Certification for design and construction, and is the fourth facility in Australia to achieve this certification and the second one for Metronode.

Bing Bong Port Loading Facility, NT In November 2012 Broad Queensland commenced works on the McArthur River Mine Bing Bong Port Loading Facility Expansion Project and reached formal Practical Completion on 7 June 2013. Located approximately 900 kilometres south east of Darwin and approximately 60 kilometres west of the township of Borroloola, the scope of works included an extension to the product port loading bulk storage facility. Despite the project’s remote location the team completed the works ahead of schedule

Palm Island, QLD Palm Island Subdivision project in Queensland formally received Practical Completion on Friday, 12 July 2013. Works commenced in June 2012 and consisted of two subdivision sites in Luma Luma and Kitchener Bligh (Outstation). The two sites created an additional 60 lots for future housing on the island for the local community.
Despite numerous challenges faced, including the island’s remote location and rocky ground conditions, the team persevered and delivered a very successful outcome for the client. Throughout the works, the team actively engaged with the community and stakeholders, exceeding the Queensland Government’s requirements for Indigenous employment

Broad Safety Summit Broad held their inaugural Safety Summit on Wednesday, 19 June 2013 at the Parmelia Hilton in Perth. Attendees at the summit included Broad senior management, Leighton Contractors representatives and various stakeholders including clients and subcontractors. The Safety Summit was designed to promote knowledge sharing and collaboration in all aspects of safety and well-being, as well as raising awareness and educating key stakeholders about the minimum non-negotiable requirements that all personnel must comply with on every Broad project. The day’s events commenced with a Welcome to Country by Richard Walley followed by an introduction from Broad’s Managing Director,

Dean Goodliffe and Safety Manager, Brian Pugsley. Both addressed the importance of safety and well-being and how it is everyone’s responsibility to set high standards and ensure that it is continually driven across the Group. A very special guest, Graham Pritchard attended the workshop providing an insight into the real effects of workplace injury and the effects a serious accident can have on a person and their family. It was a very powerful and emotional message that certainly resonated with all those in attendance. Broad’s Safety Summit was very well received and will continue as a series of events to demonstrate Broad’s investment and continuous improvement to our value Safety and Well-being

Broad Queensland hosted a Subcontractors Breakfast event on Friday, 10 May 2013 at the Colmslie Hotel. The morning was a great success with a fantastic turnout of subcontractors. Broad Safety and Quality Manager, Richard Monjo presented to the group on the importance of Safety and Well-being of all staff, clients, subcontractors and visitors across our sites and offices. Subcontractors and staff were presented with awards for their commitment to our values ‘Safety and Well-being’ and ‘Quality for Life’. This is the second Subcontractor Breakfast held by the Broad Queensland team and it will continue as an annual event and used as an opportunity to effectively network and communicate with subcontractors from in and around Queensland

To reinforce awareness that everybody has a role to play in the delivery of our value Quality for Life and it’s supporting guiding behaviours; BroadQuality Week was held from 19 – 23 August 2013.

Quality is essential in the process and not after the process is completed, therefore the focus for this year was ‘Right First Time’. Maintaining this high level of quality is about improving our processes, strengthening our culture, emphasising individual performance, accountability and recognition. A dedicated BroadQuality Day was held across our sites and offices nationally during the week to review and understand the importance of recognising and practicing quality. Thank you to all who participated in the BroadQuality 2013 activities and congratulations to those recognised for their commitment to high quality standards on our projects

Broad WA Team Wins Master Builders Award Broad WA is pleased to announce that the Parts Distribution Centre project team was presented with a 2013 West Australian Master Builders - Bankwest Excellence in Construction Award for Best Industrial Building, at the Crown Perth on Saturday, 22 June. Terminal 2 was also recognised as a finalist in the Best Public Use Building category. The Master Builders Awards is recognised by the industry, industry peers and government as the hallmark annual event for the commercial, industrial and civil engineering sectors. The award and acknowledgment is a testament to Project Manager’s Cyril Cahill and Mike Toohey for their team leadership and professionalism, plus the respective project teams, who worked diligently to deliver a safe and quality project.

NAIDOC Week NAIDOC Week celebrations were held across Australia from 7 – 14 July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Held the first week of July each year, it is one of the most significant weeks on the calendar for Indigenous people. This year’s theme celebrated the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions to the Federal Parliament. Broad acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the traditional custodians of this land and aims to enhance the everyday lives of Indigenous people. This dedicated week was a great opportunity to participate, learn and support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander community.

Leighton Contractors and Broad teamed together to celebrate events across the nation. Sites and offices hosted a range of activities including Indigenous speakers, traditional dancing, Didgeridoo playing, morning tea and barbeques featuring traditional Indigenous foods. The events across the Group nationally marked a fantastic opportunity for staff and subcontractors to learn about the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The events were very insightful and we look forward to celebrating again in 2014

The Mount Sheridan Plaza Expansion and Refurbishment project took out the Retail Facilities over $5 million category. The expansion to Mount Sheridan Plaza provides a high level of retail to the Southern growth areas of Cairns. The expansion of 14,500 sqm took the completed centre to 21,000 sqm with a total of 1,100 car parks. The centre now includes Kmart, Woolworths, Reject Shop, and a new 300 seat food court and a further 40 specialty stores, all complimenting the existing Coles supermarket and 22 stores. The award acknowledges Broad’s commitment to a high quality development and is a testament to the achievements of the Broad Queensland team

Leighton Unlocked Broad WA Senior Project Manager, Cyril Cahill and Health and Safety Manager, Brian Pugsley, attended a Leighton Unlocked program at Aquinas College on Tuesday, 25 June 2013. Leighton Unlocked is a program developed to expose students from various Leighton community investment partners with the depth and breadth of career opportunities available at Leighton Contractors. The workshop involved Indigenous Youth aged between 12 to 17 years and included an overview about Leighton Contractors, speed careering, ice breaker games, team building exercises and a presentation on employment and training opportunities
Official Opening of the Ainsworth Building at Sydney Children’s Hospital Health Minister Jillian Skinner and Mental Health Minister Kevin Humphries officially opened the $27.8 million Clinical Services Wing at Sydney Children’s Hospital completed by the Broad NSW team on Thursday, 18 July 2013. The Child and Adolescent Mental Heath Services (CAMHS) unit, now known as the Ainsworth Building, contains leading edge clinical facilities not seen before in New South Wales consisting of: • A 28-bed short-stay surgical unit; • An eight-bed purpose-built child and adolescent mental health unit; • A comprehensive rehabilitation centre; • A world-class respiratory laboratory, which includes the only infant lung function laboratory in Sydney;
• Ronald McDonald House Charities Family Centre for parents and carers; • A child protection unit; • New clinical office space for health care professionals from a range of disciplines. Following speeches given by officials and dignitaries, an emotive speech was provided by a parent of one of the many patients for which the facility will purpose. It was easy to see the difference this new facility will provide, something Broad is very proud to have been involved in. Official ribbon cutting and unveiling of the plaque was undertaken following a special video presentation by Chief Executive of the Sydney Children’s Hospital’s Network (Randwick and Westmead), Ms Elizabeth Koff. The video gave thanks to the many organisations and individuals contributing to make the Ainsworth Building a reality
Gracewood Kellyville Official Opening On Sunday, 19 March, representatives from Broad NSW Andrew Merriel, David Last, Adam Delpopolo and Andrew Gordon attended the Grand Opening of the Gracewood, Kellyville Community Care Facility. The opening was attended by over 150 people, which included speeches from Baptist Community Services Chair Person, Graham Henderson, and Baptist Community Services CEO, Ross Low. The Facility was opened by Federal Member for Mitchell, Mr Alex Hawke. Other special guests included, Mayor of The Hills Shire Council, Councillor Doctor Michelle Byrne and State Member for Baulkham Hills, Mr David Elliott MP. Both Speakers made special mention of Broad, thanking the team for their professional approach and successful construction of the project.

Corso North Lakes, QLD The Young Peoples Space (Separable Portion 1) is expected to reach Practical Completion mid September and will be tenanted by the YMCA to serve the surrounding community. The Library (Separable Portion 2) is on track for completion May 2014. The project is now in full swing with approximately 100 to 125 subcontractors on site on each day.
Kings Square, WA The site team have mobilised to their new offices located opposite the Kings Square development on Wellington Street. Site works commenced on 10 June 2013
National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Housing (NPARIH) During the last 12 months New Future Alliance has completed works on new houses and refurbishments in four remote Northern Territory Communities; Numbulwar and Gapuwiyak in East Arnhem Land, Milingimbi Island, the largest of the Crocodile Islands of Arnhem Land and Hermannsburg, in the desert two hours west of Alice Springs
Urbanest Student Accommodation, VIC (BROADAPM) Demolition of the existing building has been completed along with all piling and site levelling works. Essential services connections (sewer, Citipower, gas) to infrastructure, pouring of all footings and ground slab, and construction of the two lift over run is the construction focus for the next month
Elizabeth Quay, WA The Leighton Broad team are busy working on the delivery of Stage 1. Stage 1 involves design development and procurement of the works. Key early work packages are being prepared for sign off by the client
