Because everyone starts somewhere I love going “off the grid”. No cell service, no computers, no TV, no electricity, nothing but beautiful, serene silence. Some call it unplugging. It is difficult to find a place to get completely off the grid. You have to get pretty far into the wilderness for your cell phone to say “no service”. Most people want to have wireless and cell service even when they are on vacation. I seek the places that have no service. My son and I set out recently for a trip to the Eleven Pointe River in Southern Missouri near Arkansas. I was excited at the “off the grid” potential for the weekend. Alas, there was a bit of service at our camp site so while my son was in his tent texting his friends about his lame camping trip with his mother, I pretended I was off the grid. Once we launched the kayaks we were truly off the grid and for me, in paradise. Hurray! Mission accomplished. A full day on the river, unplugged, just me, my kid, and our dog in the silence of the wilderness. Unplugging is incomprehensible for some people. Feelings come up in the silence of the wilderness. Fear, anxiety, and all sorts of insecurities can surface as well as a sense of being out of control. This is actually the gift of going off the grid. The opportunity to feel, accept, allow and release the feelings that surface. This is a path of transformation from a life driven by fear and anxiety to a life lived in peace and trust that all is well...even when you are off the grid.

Sprayology at Holistic Journey

One of our favorite products at Holistic Journey in Belleville, IL is Sprayology®, a line of homeopathic oral sprays. Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is over 200 years old, that is based on the premise that certain natural substances are able to stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms, allowing the body to heal itself. After symptoms of a condition have been alleviated, homeopathy works to reestablish internal order at the deepest levels. What is important to our customers is that Sprayology products are FDA regulated and have no contra-indications when used with other medications. Because very small doses are used, there are no negative side effects of their use.

The Sprayology oral sprays work fast because they are sprayed into the mouth under the tongue, where they are absorbed directly into the bloodstream to deliver immediate results and enhanced health benefits. All require normal healthy nerve function.

Nerve injury and dysfunction affects performance and health.

Which state would you rather train in?

1 Ripe Avocado. 4 Pitted Dates, soak until soft (save the soak water). Agave Nectar or Maple Syrup to taste (start with a small amount until you get to the sweetness you like). 2 Tbsp of Raw Cacao Powder for an intense dark chocolate flavor, or unsweetened cocoa powder for a milkier flavor. ½ cup of Water and/or the date soak water 1 tsp Vanilla Extract • Place all ingredients except for the water into the blender. • Add a small amount of water to get started—you can always add more if needed. Blend until you have a smooth, thick pudding. You can stop here, or for a fluffier more mousse like version, add a bit more water, (I prefer the soak water from the dates), and blend until light and fluffy. • Put small portions into dessert bowls and garnish with peppermint and fresh strawberries. Enjoy!

1 Very Ripe Banana 2 Tbs Cold-Pressed Olive Oil

• Mash the banana well and thoroughly mix with the oil. • Fill a bowl with warm filtered water and place a face towel in the water. • After cleaning your face, spread the banana mixture over face and neck, and top with the warm towel. (You can use a paper-towel between the two if you don’t want to get banana on the towel). • The perfect setting would be to relax in a tub of warm water scented with the essential oil of your choice for 20 to 30 minutes. Splash with warm water to remove. According to Phyo, bananas are a great source of biotin and potassium, which helps us maintain healthy, beautiful skin and hair and is great for wrinkles since it plumps up the skin!

Solutions for Shoulder Pain

By: Dr. Jennifer McCleary

addressing other related imbalances would be a very practical reason to visit a practitioner for an evaluation. I see these problems most often in individuals who have these kinds of responsibilities from the work that they do. Surgeons, dentists, pharmacists, accountants, or other individuals work seated in front of a computer for hours at a time are all individuals at risk of issues of the neck, upper back and shoulder pain but as much work as the shoulder does for us anyone may experience shoulder pain at some point in their lives. The good news is that when you intervene quickly enough most cases can be managed conservatively and with excellent outcomes.

Shoulder pain is an extremely common complaint. In fact, according to a 1995 study in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, shoulder pain makes up 16% of all musculoskeletal complaints when individuals visit their primary care physician. This is second only to low back pain complaints. I also find that many times when someone presents with a painful shoulder there is a neck or mid-back issue that is also associated with it. In some cases it is a cause and in others it is an effect of that shoulder condition. To make matters worse, there are many different causes of shoulder problems. Therefore it takes not only a skilled practitioner, but a patient and diligent investigator to get to the root of some chronic shoulder issues. The reason is because of the great number of structures that surround the shoulder which are necessary for its stability. The shoulder is actually referred to as the “great joint” because it has such a tremendous range of motion, more so than other joints of the body. In addition, much of the stability in our shoulder is not created through its bony connections, but through various ligaments and muscles that compress the shoulder into the body. As practitioners, we will often pay close attention to how the shoulder blade is moving because it will often offer clues to where the imbalance is coming from. Researchers for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons found “scapular dyskineses” (abnormal shoulder blade movement) is present in 68-100% of patients with shoulder injuries. I find clinically that the number one risk for injury in any area is the history of a previous injury there. Some chronic causes of scapular dyskinesis includes: posture abnormalities, muscular contractures, and muscular weaknesses. These three causes may be further complicated by the way in which one can contribute to the next. For example, repetitive movement activities and holding static postures alike can lead to fatigue of some muscles and over time cause one to develop habitual poor posture. Therefore, aside from seeking pain relief, 12

Essence

Skillfullness in Action (Your Yoga)

Yoga is not your run of the mill exercise. Yes, it will increase your strength, flexibility and overall fitness but you don’t need to DO or BE anything to start your practice. Unlike most forms of exercise, such as running or lifting weights, which are performed for a finite period of time in a specific place, yoga is something we can practice both on and off the mat.

The mind can be both a creative asset and a great obstacle. In this class we use the body to access the mind .Through movement, deliberate breath work and simple observation of feelings, thoughts and actions we can illuminate unsupportive patterns and habits. As we become more familiar with the way we participate in life we can make more life-enhancing choices that rewrite the way we show up the world.

The breath is our greatest resource and the foundation of the physical practice (asana) of yoga. If you can breathe you can do yoga! Breathing fully and more deeply aids the body in releasing toxins and tension. The breath also helps us build energy and tap into the instinctive rhythm of life. This class reviews the primary yogic breathing techniques and helps students cultivate awareness between movement and breath.

Though not nearly as obvious, life, like the heart, has a distinct rhythm. When the body, breath, and mind come into greater alignment we have better access to the inner voice of our heart. This class builds on the techniques learned in classes 1, 2 and 3, incorporating heart opening postures and gentle back bends to cultivate a sense of rhythmic flow from beginning to end.

YOGA

The body is our sacred container, and everyone’s body is unique. Because of differences in bone structure, the same posture performed by 2 different people will NEVER look alike! However, with curiosity and intelligence we can gain a deeper understanding of our bodies, build strength, increase flexibility and rejuvenate and re-balance the primary systems. In this class you will explore some of the most common yoga postures, focusing on your unique alignment, modifications, posture benefits and contraindications.

But what does that mean exactly? Enter Y6 Ignite, a program created by Yoga Six, the newest member of our St. Louis yoga community. Oriented around 6 fundamental yoga principles – body, breath, mind, heart, essence and skillfulness in action – Y6 Ignite not only prepares the physical body for practice but teaches students how to integrate and apply these principles to everyday life. Initially created to acclimate new students to the practice of yoga, the teachings in this program are something we can all benefit from.

Yoga & Spa Magazine | Summer 2012

Through the evolving practice of yoga we realize more fully the inner core of our being. In this class we flow with breath, movement and newfound awareness as we celebrate our own unique gifts and step into our lives with more self-compassion, strength, courage, dedication, understanding, knowledge, and grace.

While the practice of yoga offers tools and guideposts on the path, it is up to each of us to take what resonates and supports our evolution. Integrating the various practices of yoga – the physical (asana) practice, breathing techniques, awareness of mental experience and connection to heart and intuition–reawakens our core essence. In this final class of the series we create a platform for self-guided inquiry, crafting techniques that support us in living more fully and from a place of empowerment and participation.

Y6 Ignite is a 6 class program that meets twice a week for 3 weeks. To learn more visit www.yogasix.com or stop by the studio. 5724 Oakland Avenue I St Louis, MO 63110 I 314.802.7447

FINDING THEIR ZEN at Edwardsville Fitness Studio Mark Friederich 61-year old Mark Friederich has attended yoga classes with his wife Kay for 15-years. Initially it was a nice balance to their other activities of strength training and gym workouts and Mark appreciated how yoga allowed him to explore his body’s strengths and limitations. For the last six years they have been regulars at Edwardsville Fitness Studio. About three years ago Mark’s yoga practice—indeed everything in his life-- was put on hold. Mark was diagnosed with Mantel cell lymphoma, a rare non-Hodgkin’s type of cancer. He started treatment in 2010 at the Siteman Center in St. Louis. Mark and Kay refer to the experience as a journey. Says Kay, “…you are just lost in the long process of doctors, treatments, hospital stays and more treatments. Doctors told him he would not be able to work (as a Dentist) for 6 months. Turns out they were right. That whole year was basically treatment.” In March of 2011 Mark was feeling well enough to try yoga again and started restorative classes at Edwardsville Fitness Studio. He has now returned to his Hatha Yoga practice and is almost back to where he was before the cancer diagnosis. Mark encourages others regardless of age, shape or ability to give yoga a try.

Danny Kamp Danny tried yoga for the first time 8-months ago hoping to improve his flexibility. He started with Ashtanga since his fiancé Heather McCammon teaches that style at Edwardsville Fitness Studio. “I had totally under estimated the difficulty of it. In my first class I thought, how the heck am I supposed to put my leg over there and grab my wrist?” It took about three sessions for him to realize the benefits he was getting and gain confidence in his practice. As a six-year veteran in the United States Air Force Reserve, Kamp is no stranger to challenge. He currently works as an Aircraft Production Controller at Scott Air Force Base and is studying Geographical Information Systems at SIUE. His goals for the future include learning the entire Ashtanga first series, being able to do full Lotus and trying some Acro-yoga with his fiancé! The 31-year old says, “Yoga has changed my life in ways I never would have imagined”.

Jeremy Henkhaus took his first yoga class six years ago at Edwardsville Fitness Studio with Ruth Kubicek. Henkhaus recalls being truly amazed during his first class. “It was as though my path had been laid out in front of me. My mind, body and soul all connected, allowing me to focus while moving out of a tough spot in my life.” Exploring different styles of yoga is somewhat of a passion for Jeremy. He is especially fond of his practice with Kitty Daly. Henkhaus is currently pursuing his 500-hour training from the Kripalu Institution as well as becoming certified in Thai Yoga. Jeremy is now a 200-Hour Kripalu Certified Yoga Instructor and also an Esalen Certified Massage Therapist. He teaches two classes a week at Edwardsville Fitness Studio and plans to offer workshops in the future. “From the time I started yoga to now, my life has changed for the better. Like everyone, I have my ups and downs but yoga has given me the tools to keep moving forward and explore what the universe has to offer.” Yoga & Spa Magazine | Summer 2012

Urban Breath Yoga in the Grove

Cathleen Williams, founder and owner of Urban Breath Yoga, laughs as she recounts the story of her very first yoga class in 1999 in Rishikesh, India. Having found herself in a town known as the world capital of yoga, she decided it was the perfect time to satisfy her curiosity about yoga and try her very first class. Rather than finding enlightenment, she found herself stumbling out after just a few minutes of pranayama and a couple of asanas. She’d been struck by the that nasty gastro-intestinal Indian bug, and she associated yoga classes with that experience for a long time. At that point, she never imagined that 13 years later she would not only be a yoga teacher, but also own a thriving yoga business comprised of two studio locations in the Grove and Dogtown neighborhoods in St. Louis City. Cathleen describes the upstart of the business as a natural fit with her background and her interests. She opened Urban Breath just after returning to St. Louis from Spain, where she lived for a decade and trained in Kundalini yoga and naturopathy. From the beginning, Cathleen believed that a successful studio needs to be built within a strong collaborative framework. The studio has never been about her; it is about the people who come. She has brought together teachers with a wide range of experiences who are passionate about building community, welcoming students from diverse backgrounds, and of course, sharing the teachings of yoga. Supported by this dedicated group of teachers and her partner, graphic/web designer Mike Caldwell (owner of 01creative), Cathleen has been able to grow a vibrant yoga community through Urban Breath Yoga.

How did the Grove studio come to be? “We had outgrown our sweet space in Dogtown; classes were bursting at the seams. I was getting complaints that classes were too full, so I started looking around for a perfect space in which to expand. I have to admit that the fabulous wedge building on Manchester caught my eye more times than I can even count. It is just a beautiful building. But it took almost a year to finally find myself inside that building checking it out, and then it was another year before we actually moved in. It was worth the wait, though. Everyone loves the space and we couldn’t be happier. There’s nowhere I’d rather be than The Grove. I love the neighborhood and the booming community it’s becoming, slowly but surely.”

What is the studio philospohy? “Studio philosophy? I’d call it more of a studio ‘feel’. You really can feel that everyone here authentically cares, and that is good stuff and a lot of fun. Beautiful things happen in this space all the time. You are welcome here anytime, in any way. It doesn’t matter if your goal is just to be able to carry your groceries without your back hurting, to sculpt a ‘yoga butt’, or to feel connected with your eternal self. Come daily or just dabble here and there, whatever works for you. Ultimately our philosophy is to encourage you to feel good and enjoy life.”

Yoga & Spa Magazine | Summer 2012

Tell us about the Urban Breath teachers... “My father was a small business owner and always said the secret to success was to hire good people. I think that applies one hundred times over to a yoga studio. Quality on many levels is the key, and I am lucky to work with some quality instructors. We have this beautiful group of very talented teachers. I’ve been even luckier that many of them have been with UB for a long, long time.“

What kind of classes and events does UB offer? “We offer a foundation of beginner to advanced level classical Hatha and Vinyasa Flow, as well as Kundalini, Restorative, Yin Yoga, a Prenatal/ Postnatal Yoga program, and Yoga for Weight Loss. We also offer frequent weekend workshops, a 200-hour Yoga Alliance certified teacher training program, international retreats, and special classes like Yoga Trance Dance (with a DJ!) and Lovers’ Yoga. And because our ultimate goal is to bring people together through yoga, we offer a number of community events such as monthly potlucks that allow students, teachers, and their families and friends to share food and laughs off the mat; a summertime donation-based yoga class in Forest Park that regularly draws close to 75 participants; yoga challenges that help students encourage one another to practice; participation in a holiday adopt-a-family program; and the annual Global Mala-Yoga for Peace event. There’s a lot. Sometimes it is hard to remember everything.”

What is new or next for you and UB? “More of the same, but better. We are always raising the bar and looking for ways to make your studio experience solid, fun, and fulfilling. I really feel we have come into our own and that we are a place with purpose and clarity. And how wonderful that St Louis is finally becoming a yoga city! More and more people are aware of how they are absolutely cockeyed with stress. Yoga can help with that, as well as a long list of other things. Do you want your whole day to be better? Do yoga. Do you want to be happier and healthier? Don’t stop doing yoga.”

With a full schedule of over 50 weekly studio classes at two locations and a plethora of yoga activities and community events, Urban Breath offers opportunities for not only the physical and philosophical practice of yoga, but also the yogic art of enjoying life and enhancing human connection. Check in at the studio or at urbanbreathyoga.com often so you don’t miss out!

Balancing Healthy Lifestyle

oga in Columbia in Columbia, Illinois is a hidden gem within a hidden gem. As a small, rural, bedroom community just across the Mississippi from Mehlville, Missouri, Columbia still holds traces of a slower, friendly pace, land has belonged to families for centuries and culture…. well, culture can be hard to find. Yoga in Columbia, however has added not only a cultural edge to this tiny community, but it has inspired an acceptance of the new within the community by reflecting that health is more than the occasional jog or salad for lunch, it is caring for the whole self in a healthy and meaningful way. The community has embraced this perfect little oasis of health and sanctuary, and its inspiring leader and founder, Jami Marsoun, has created a way to spread its bountiful wings even further into our little gem across the river, by reaching our (its?) children. YoCo Kids (an acronym for Yoga-Columbia-Kids) will introduce yoga poses to children ages 5-12 through interactive storytelling, music and games. Sure to be both fun and fit, yoga sessions will be taught by Eagleview Elementary teacher, Mary Holtkamp, with the assistance of Columbia High School state and national champion cheerleader, senior Emma Marsoun. YoCo Kids begins in early June and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9:00 - 9:50 am for ages 5-8, and from 10:10 - 11:00 am for ages 9-12. Continually innovating and always with an eye to expanding the world of Yoga in Columbia to anyone who can benefit, YoCo Kids is an excellent answer to every parent’s summer dilemma about what to do with their children that is safe, educational and enhancing experience - and it’s close to home.

studios in California, Reno and St. Louis. After moving to Columbia from St. Louis in 2006 she missed the beauty of yoga, the mediation and breath work and the soothing music and atmosphere that played such an integral role in her enjoyment of the practice. She wanted to offer what she loved to the community and share all the magic of yoga beyond just the exercise. “I am truly blessed to bring yoga to the Columbia community, and honored to witness our students becoming more aware of the connections between their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. It is a beautiful thing!” Both Jami and Mary explain that aside from fun and lots of interaction, safety and learning will be paramount in YoCo Kids workshops. “Yoga principles will be taught and reinforced along with proper alignment, breath work and yoga etiquette. Children should eat a light meal 1 to 2 hours before coming for yoga and water is a must, especially in the summer.” There will be 8 workshops that include supplies for art projects, and a YoCo Kids T-shirt for just $75.00 per child. Space is limited to just 15 kids per age group. Register online at

“Children benefit from yoga for the same reasons adults do; it develops strength, increases body and breath awareness, energy, stamina, flexibility, mental clarity, self-confidence and a sense of well-being. Children today can suffer from stress. Family life is crazy busy for some kids and down time is nonexistent. Yoga provides kids with that down time on the mat, learning breath control, body control, awareness and fun. Children are playful, naturally flexible, and uninhibited. Given the right motivation, guidance and practice children can become amazing little yogis!” says Jami. An innovator at heart and a devoted lover of yoga, Jami began Yoga in Columbia in May of 2009 as an answer to the limited yoga offered in the area. She saw something missing in the strictly fitness-based delivery of the practice she fell in love with during yoga retreats in Mexico, and had been practicing regularly since 1999 in various

Don’t believe everything you think by Rebecca Wiederkehr, LCSW

Consider, for a moment, that everyone is always talking about themselves, even if they are yelling with anger and calling names. They are just saying they are angy and at the moment know no other way to express it. With their words they are projecting their inside anger onto you. You could be taking it in as truth because you are projecting your negative thoughts and feelings about yourself right onto them and into their words. Projection is a dream or trance we have been caught in most of our lives. According to Sigmund Freud, projection is a psychological defense mechanism whereby one “projects” one’s own undesirable thoughts, motivations, desires, and feelings onto someone else. It is a common process.

lazy and your ‘should always be working’ ethic onto your partner? Subtle self-judgment projected on others can become hazardous in any relationship.

Projection can get complicated. For purposes here I will keep it simple with examples and add tools we can use to bring this more into our awareness – to learn to live more mindfully.

When someone is speaking to us in a harsh and blaming way and we start to feel defensive it is time to pull back and slow down our inward processes. It is a clue we are taking something personal because we are projecting our inner world into their words. We must remember that they, too, are caught up in the trance of projection, projecting their “stuff” outward toward you.

This is very common in relationships, of course. When you find you are angry with your spouse, instead of beginning a battle, go away to another space and ask yourself, “Why am I angry with myself, right now? What is really going on inside of me?” If we can be truthful with ourselves we will find it could be one of many things that we are projecting onto our partner. Here are some common examples. You are seeing your spouse procrastinating. Several things need to be completed in a timely manner and you can see it is not going to happen. By slowing the process and going inside you might just find that you, too, are a procrastinator and you hate that about yourself so it angers you to see it in your spouse. The same goes for cluttering. One’s spouse could be a real clutter bug. The partner has a tough time with this until they check in quietly and realize they, too, are a clutter bug and can’t stand it in their partner or themselves. These mirrors can cause us much pain. Your partner may be an avid reader who spends a lot of time at it and still knows how to pace his or herself to get to certain projects. You may bristle every time you see your partner sitting there in the middle of the day reading. Could it be you are projecting your own fear of being 22

A great tool here would be to use listening skills. It works two ways; while you are repeating for clarification what you hear them saying, you are focusing on what they are saying and not taking in what they are saying and putting yourself down with it. Reflecting back what you are hearing is also helping them clarify and bring them to consciousness and relieves their emotions of the moment. We have other parts of ourselves we don’t like. It is with our unresolved issues of these rejected and disowned parts of self that we must make peace. Self-acceptance and loving ourselves, owning these shadow parts with compassion, love, forgiveness and acceptance is imperative for experiencing our inner peace and joy which is our natural state of mind.

LIFESTYLE

Do you find yourself getting upset with what someone says to you? Do you find yourself taking things personal, knowing for certain someone is trying to make a negative point about you?

It takes mindfulness, constant pro-active awareness to train us to catch our projections. When we are feeling hooked in with lots of negative thoughts and emotions going on, it is time to find a quiet place and begin our personal detective work. It is all about healing our projections and taking back our power. In the process it is important to be gentle and forgiving with ourselves.

Namaste India! is a global initiative to say thanks to India for the wonderful gift of yoga and a way to support girls to equity. Of the 793 million illiterate people in the world, 2/3 are female. Educating girls and women is widely acknowledged as the most powerful and effective way to address global poverty. Many Yoga Studios throughout the region are participating and working to raise at least one scholarship per studio community. It costs $250 to support a girl scholar in India for one year. Our St. Louis goal is to provide 40 girls with a one-year scholarship in Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program. http://www.roomtoread.org/page.aspx?pid=284 To help us reach our goal and donate directly, go to: http://roomtoread.kintera.org/gep/stlnamasteindia. Be sure and click on “JOIN THE TEAM” to complete your donation.

World Change Starts with Educated Children. Room to Read supports girls so that they not only graduate, but also develop the skills they need to negotiate key life decisions. Finishing secondary school leads to smaller, healthier families, lower HIV infection rates, and higher wages. Educated women are more likely to educate their own children - ending the cycle of illiteracy in one generation. For more information contact Laurie Levin (636) 233-3330 laurielevinhealth@gmail.com

Julia Cameron has had a remarkable career, which in turn has given remarkable help to others. Herself an awardwinning poet, playwright, and filmmaker, she has written thirty books, ranging from her widely-praised, hard-hitting crime novel The Dark Room to her volumes of children’s poems and prayers. Despite her extensive film and theater credits, which include such diverse work as Miami Vice and the prize-winning romantic comedy God’s Will, which she both wrote and directed, Cameron is best known for her hugely successful works on creativity. The Artist’s Way has sold more than two million copies worldwide, and her followup bestsellers The Vein of Gold, Walking in this World and The Right to Write are likewise flagship books which are taught in universities, churches, human potential centers and even in tiny clusters deep in the jungles of Panama. Credited with founding a new human potential movement that has enabled millions to realize their creative dreams, Cameron eschews the title creativity expert, preferring instead to describe herself simply as an artist. “Artists have always mentored, I just do it on a wider scale.” You do not have to be an artist or even striving to be an artist to reap the benefits of Julia Cameron’s teachings. You may want to grow your business, find your soul mate, move to San Francisco or travel the world. Maybe you do want to make a living selling your artwork. This weekend workshop with Julia Cameron will take your life to new levels in all areas. I recently completed a one year Artist’s Way mentor group in St. Louis that changed my life. It gave me the tools and support to continuing living my dream life, expand my vision and relationships. Start writing down how your dream life would look and prepare to be transported to that new life after attending the workshop in October. I know many of you are already familiar with The Artist’s Way, have read the book, studied in groups and are living your visions. Now you can spend a weekend with the original Mentor! ~ Stacy Hunsicker, Publisher, Yoga & Spa Magazine. Call 314-965-6133 for Artist’s Way introductory groups forming in St. Louis to enhance the weekend workshop in November. If you have a vision for your life that you would like to see manifest now, join an Artist’s Way group or simply come to the workshop for support in living your vision. Why wait? Life is short. We get one life. This is not a dress rehearsal. IT’S SHOW TIME, PEOPLE!
