Director’s Welcome Black History Month (BHM) 2018 provides us with the opportunity to bring together incredible projects and events across Leicester throughout October. The festival promotes the history and contribution that African and African Caribbean communities have made to Leicester, alongside showcasing the best in art, film, theatre and dance, from an African and African Caribbean perspective. Our theme this year Seen and Not Heard: Black Women, reflects upon representation and freedom of speech and will focus on female voices from the African and African Caribbean diaspora. 2018 coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of Sisters of the Long March touring the UK, and the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of The West Indian Gazette by Claudia Jones. In a tribute to putting women’s voices centre stage, the launch event for 2018 will present the return of trailblazing performance artist Nora Chipaumire. Born in Zimbabwe and based in New York, Nora will be showing two pieces of work #PUNK and the provocatively entitled *N!GGA, a continuation of her series exploring radical artists and protest art, inspired by her formative years. BHM is an opportunity to showcase the work of emerging talent, this year’s BHM Live presents work from talented artists; Theo Godson Oloyade, Elsabet Yonas, Maria de Luz Ghoumrassi, Beverley Bennett and Mia Johnson, showcasing new theatre, dance and film. Two Queens will also be presenting an exhibition from Sheffield based artist Ashley Holmes. BHM is great this year for music, with the introduction of the DMU International Jazz Series in collaboration with the Leicester Jazz House and DMU Music presenting Nerjia, Decosta Boyce and Julia Biel. In addition, Leicester will also be welcoming the iconic British band Soul II Soul as they celebrate thirty years of their influential success at De Montfort Hall. The BHM film programme returns, in collaboration with Phoenix. The film programme delves deeper into key issues affecting the African and African Caribbean diaspora, focusing on films by Black female writers and directors or examining the true lives of key trailblazers. Presenting innovative cinema; Gone too Far, Hallelujah Anyhow, Mama Africa: Miriam Makeba and a double bill of The Souls of Black Girls and Soft Hair. We are also proud to have programmed Winnie, the film tells the compelling story of Winnie Mandela’s radical life, as a misunderstood and intriguingly powerful contemporary female political figures, marking Nelson Mandela’s centenary and the passing of Winnie Mandela earlier this year. October is a chance to celebrate the importance of the legacy that Black History Month has built and something we can all share. On behalf of Serendipity I would like to thank everyone who has contributed and supported Black History Month this year, with another fantastic programme of events for all to engage and enjoy. Pawlet Brookes CEO and Artistic Director Serendipity
City Mayor’s Welcome Leicester is a city with a legacy of trailblazing citizens who have paved the way in civic life. In the anniversary year of the Representation of the People Act and the women’s suffrage movement, it is fitting that Leicester’s Black History Month will acknowledge the contributions that the African and African Caribbean community, in particular women, have made. Leicester is a city that can be proud of its connections to fighting injustice and inequality, both locally and on an international scale. 2018 also marks the seventieth anniversary of the Empire Windrush, and the chance to commemorate those that travelled to the UK from the Commonwealth to live and work. We have opportunity to celebrate Leicester’s rich shared history and culture that has resulted from people from all backgrounds who call the city their home, and their commitment to improve life in Leicester. I am delighted that this year’s Black History Month will feature a wealth of activity from workshops, theatre, films, music, dance and lectures. I would like to thank Serendipity for organising this year’s launch and coordinating the excellent programme, alongside everyone who has contributed to Black History Month 2018. I hope you enjoy the events taking place throughout October. It is an opportunity for all of Leicester’s communities to come together. Peter Soulsby City Mayor Leicester
Black History Month 2018 Launch Serendipity and De Montfort University presents
Nora Chipaumire #PUNK *N!GGA Friday 28 Saturday 29 September 7:30pm Two Queens £16 | £12 Concession
To launch Black History Month 2018, Nora Chipaumire continues her series on iconic women and the ideologies they represent, from pop to punk and Congolese rumba. Taking inspiration from her formative years in Zimbabwe, through the 1970s, 80s and 90s, and discovering more democratic ways to share music, she explores her personal history to find a common ground. Music, dance and stereotypes collide head on through Nora’s epic performance protest art in the industrial setting of Two Queens gallery. #PUNK takes its inspiration from Patti Smith, riffing off her iconic and controversial lyrics and offers a punk perspective on the future. The provocatively titled *N!gga addresses Nora’s own appreciation of African aesthetics and Africanisms through a study of Congolese rumba music and the work of Rit Nzele. Nora’s work is a celebration on self-invention and self-determination; an attitude, a record, a lifestyle, an idea and a simple celebration of African genius and imagination.
