DIRECTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Let’s Dance International Frontiers 2020. We are thrilled to be marking ten years of the festival, and we are looking forward to celebrating this milestone with you over the course of the festival. Over the years, we have been honoured to host internationallyacclaimed dancers and choreographers showcasing some of the highest level work in their respective genres. This year will be no exception. As ever, we will launch LDIF20 on 29 April, International Dance Day. We are delighted to have Kyle Abraham performing his latest creation, Cocoon. Reflecting some of the issues addressed in Abraham’s work, the walls of Leicester Gallery in De Montfort University’s Vijay Patel Building, where the performance takes place, will be displaying an exhibition exploring perceptions and representations of Black men in dance. Our annual conference, 10 Years, 10 Countries, 10 Voices: Black Classics brings together key voices in the conversations around international dance. Featured speakers hail from all over the world, including Cuba, Norway, Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad, USA and UK. These visionary pioneers have put Black dance centre stage throughout their careers.
We cannot think of a better way to celebrate ten years of LDIF than looking back to see how barriers have been broken down through creativity and tenacity. Alice Sheppard, the award-winning disabled choreographer and dancer, presents Where Good Souls Fear, challenging notions of propriety for queer, Black, disabled women. ArtIncidence, made up of Martiniquais duo Annabel Guérédrat and Henri Tauliaut, bring their Afro-Punk influenced fusion of dance and live art to New Walk Museum. This year’s Biography platform showcases Reggie Wilson, with a spiritual performance taking place in the beautiful setting of All Saints’ Church. Headlining the festival, we are delighted to welcome back PHILADANCO, last seen at LDIF in 2017 when they made their UK debut. Their performance is one not to be missed, with a fusion of ballet and contemporary styles masterfully shown across the four pieces they’ll be performing. Our tenth birthday is not just a time to look back, but also an opportunity to look forward. LDIF20 will showcase emerging and developing artists, those who represent the future of Black dance. Our Signatures and Autograph programmes, in partnership with Dance4, provide platforms for those starting out as well as those more established artists who are taking their work to the next level. We’ll also be supporting dancers with continued professional development opportunities through the LDIF+ workshop programme. Participants will work with three esteemed choreographers to gain insights into the techniques that these artists created and codified throughout their careers. I would like to thank all those who have had a hand in making the festival what it is over the last ten years, and to extend my gratitude to everyone who has made this year’s programme possible. I look forward to seeing you at LDIF20, and celebrating our birthday with you. Let’s Dance! Pawlet Brookes CEO and Artistic Director

PATRON’S WELCOME As Serendipity’s patron, it is my privilege to welcome you to Let’s Dance International Frontiers 2020. This year is one to really celebrate, with significant milestones across both our respective organisations. In 2020, Serendipity and LDIF celebrate ten years and, across the pond, PHILADANCO will be honouring its fiftieth anniversary. It is a joy to share in each other’s celebrations and a fitting way to express the spirit of creative collaboration that defines LDIF. This year’s festival, focussed around the theme 10 Years, 10 Countries, 10 Voices: Black Classics, brings together celebrated practitioners and leaders
from across the industry and showcases the power of the international dance community when we stand united. I wish Serendipity the very best of luck and hope for many more years of seeing this fantastic festival reach diverse audiences, foster new talent and set the stage for more creative collaborations as we grow and celebrate our successes together. Joan Myers Brown Patron of Serendipity Founder and Executive Artistic Director of PHILADANCO

SIGNATURES Wednesday 6 May | 7.45pm Studio, Curve Theatre £12 / £10 An ongoing collaboration between Serendipity and Dance4, Signatures creates a platform to nurture and support undiscovered talent. Working with emerging dancers and choreographers locally, nationally and internationally, Signatures enables these artists to realise their creative potential. Signatures will showcase several excerpts of work in development; thought-provoking, explorative and always innovative, this is a unique opportunity to see rising
stars of dance.
Pablo Girolami (Italy/Spain): Manbuhsa
Fuelled by a fascination for foreign civilisations and inspired by the music’s rhythms, a relation is built between the dancers. Through movement, one invites the other to discover his natural instinct and vibrations that will guide them in their journey.
Freddy Houndekindo (France/Sweden): #unstated_figure
An abstract self-portrait questioning identity as an individual within a society. Through a prism of choreography and a multiplicity of dance styles, Houndekindo develops strategies to hijack preconceived ideas that a cultural legacy, chosen or unwillingly inherited, can produce.
Samwel Japhet (Tanzania): On The Other Side of Being
Japhet explores how Tanzanian society judges and portrays people with madness. The performance challenges the differences between the condition of being in control of your body and thoughts and the condition of being out of this control.
David Milome (Martinique): One Lost…One Lost?
Choreographers Milome and Josiane Antourel create a common language through mixing hip hop and African Contemporary dance. Bringing together different techniques and generations, the dancers express their emotional states through a singular choreographic interplay.
Clio Christie (UK): Untouchable
My caste is my curse. When your repression is determined by the inevitable, your vulnerability will always hold you captive. Christie explores a journey of trying to escape from one’s brutal reality of the unjust social system.
Del Wooding (St Kitts/UK): A Cause, For Another An exploration into a journey of mind and soma, this piece explores what drives improvisation. Within the concept of ego and soul, the art of construct and flow, the macro and micro are the factors that guide the essence of movement.

ALICE SHEPPARD: WHERE GOOD SOULS FEAR Thursday 7 May | 7.45pm Studio, Curve Theatre £18 / £16 Award-winning choreographer, Alice Sheppard, creates movement that challenges conventional understandings of disabled and dancing bodies. Engaging with disability arts, culture and history, Sheppard attends to the complex intersections of disability, gender and race by exploring the societal and cultural significance of difference. Where Good Souls Fear is an investigation of colonial excess,
provoking questions about who or what is too much. Ranging from spoken memories of growing up, to lyrical floorwork, to an explosion of furious movement, Good Souls challenges our notions of propriety for queer, Black, disabled women. Sheppard’s choreography is a rigorous excavation of body, disability, and various mobility technologies. Choreography and Performance: Alice Sheppard Music: Dan Wool Video Projection: Dakhil Hausif

ARTINCIDENCE: NUS DESCENDANT L’ESCALIER (NUDES DESCENDING THE STAIRCASE) Saturday 9 May | 7.45pm New Walk Museum £18 / £16
Duchamp’s painting Nu Descendant un Escalier (1912), the pair’s everevolving work occupies a space where dance meets visual art.
Annabel Guérédrat and Henri Tauliaut present a new version of their piece, Nus Descendant L’Escalier (Nudes Descending the Staircase), at LDIF20.
Through an Afro-Punk lens, the artists have cultivated a hybrid clothing style which sits between carnival and queer (meaning, literally, “bizarre”), both gothic and sexy at the same time. Through visuals and movement, their audacious and transgressive work seeks to create an affirmation of representing ourselves as we want to in this world.
The Martiniquais duo, Guérédrat, a dancer and choreographer, and Tauliaut, a visual artist, have been engaged in a creative partnership since 2015 when they presented the first iteration of the piece. Inspired by the title and controversial side of Marcel

AUTOGRAPH: AKEIM TOUSSAINT BUCK AND YINKA ESI GRAVES Wednesday 13 May | 7.30pm Guildhall ÂŁ18 / ÂŁ16 Autograph is an annual developmental platform that supports established artists as they progress further in their careers. With the support of Serendipity and Dance4, the artists have developed their work to create new pieces for LDIF20. The artists presented in Autograph represent the exciting future of Black dance and highlight up and coming artists to watch.
Akeim Toussaint Buck: Sib Y Osis
Serendipity commissioned Sib Y Osis as part of BHM Live 2019. At Autograph choreographer Akeim Toussaint Buck presents the next phase in the development of this piece. Sib Y Osis is a dance theatre performance encapsulating a journey of contentment, play, fear, rage and
joy. It tells a story exploring an emotive journey shared by siblings living in a state of spirit and dance, opposed by a shifting environment of pain and celebration. Taking inspiration from historical and present systems of discrimination, activism and spirituality, this work draws power from the elating spirit to bring relief from the struggle.
Yinka Esi Graves: The Disappearing Act (work in progress)
In her first solo piece, flamenco dancer Yinka Esi Graves explores the constant play between being seen and invisibility. This work is created as a response to sites in Spain once connected to their Afro-Andalusian population. Although now forgotten, it is through this absence that Graves explores her physicality. Directed by Jennifer Abod, Angela Bowen’s partner of more than 30 years, this award-winning documentary explores Bowen’s life as a Black lesbian, feminist activist, classical ballerina and renowned dance teacher. Through stills and video, explore ideas of Black men in dance and delve in to how masculinity is portrayed and perceived in various genres of dance. This exhibition will be showing throughout LDIF20.
Abod began making The Passionate Pursuits in 2000, at the onset of Bowen’s Alzheimer’s disease, in an effort to capture and share the extraordinary life of a woman whose passion and brilliance had pushed beyond the oppressive barriers of sexism and racism.
