Welcome to Black History Month 2022. Black History Month Leicester will centre on interpretations of the theme, Independence: A New Time, A New Era.
2022 recognises a number of anniversaries; 60 years of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago’s independence, and the first anniversary of Barbados becoming a republic. In the UK it marks 35 years since the first Black female politician, Diane Abbott, was elected to parliament and 35 years since the establishment of Black History Month.
In Leicester 2022 marks 40 years since the start of Talking Blues by Herdle White, the longest serving African Caribbean presenter/producer on local radio in the UK. These milestones are part of a complex inter-connecting local, national and international picture. We launch with a programme of new work celebrating artists from the emerging to the established.
