ROBERT DOWNEY JR.

Hollywood’s King

C · ROBERT DOWNEY JR

The Iron Man who didn’t need suit to fly to the top

TEXT MADISON GERARD PHOTO DISNEY-SAM JONES / MARVEL / WIREIMAGE

R

obert Downey Jr.’s story has a touch of Cinderella, a bad boy past, and now repertoire of box office hits along with the award nominations to prove that he is truly Hollywood’s king. He starred in his first film at the ripe age of five. Since then he has seen dark days, but at the age of 48 he is nothing short of in his prime. Downey Jr. as described by Kevin Feige, his Producer in the summer blockbuster Iron Man 3, is the “biggest star in the world.” Downey Jr. was born in Manhattan to Robert Downey Sr., a actor/writer/producer/cinematographer/director of underground films and Elsie an actress. With his genes, it seems as though he was destined to be a part of the film industry from the word go. Downey Jr. stared in his father’s film “Pound” when most children are starting kindergarten, and ever since then he has continually risen to the top, but that wasn’t without struggle and set back. For about two decades Downey Jr. struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and run-ins with the law. He even served 12 months in a California prison for failing to show up to court ordered drug tests. Downey Jr.’s battle with substance abuse and jail stints are seemingly over and he has persistently been turning out movie hit after movie hit ever since. Downey credits his current wife, Susan, for

his successful recovery from drug use. Susan, formerly the Executive Vice President of Production at Silver Productions has now stepped down to work more closely with her husband. The power duo launched a production company appropriately named Team Downey in 2010. Continuing the list of their accomplishments, the couple welcomed Exton, their first child, together in February of 2012. Since his recovery Downey Jr. has let his star power shine, starring in several critically acclaimed roles. He is a two-time Academy Award nominee and is suspected to become a winner soon. He has starred in too many movies to list, and is on track to break the record for the single biggest payday in Hollywood history for his continuing role as Tony Stark in the fourth and fifth installments of “Iron Man. “ This month marks the premier of “Iron Man 3.” Downey Jr. for the third time plays Iron Man Tony Stark opposite Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays his love interest Pepper Potts, in the new release. The film, along with Downey Jr.’s performance, directed by Shane Black was greatly anticipated after “Marvel’s The Avengers” record-breaking release last summer. The genius, inventor and super hero that is Tony Stark will continue his epic adventures in the third installment. “Iron Man 3”

C · ROBERT DOWNEY JR

introduces many new famous faces to star along side Downey Jr. including Guy Pearce as Adlrich Killian and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin. In addition to the wildly popular Iron Man series, Downey has also been recognized for his performances in the duo of “Sherlock Holmes” films directed by Guy Ritchie. In this role Downey Jr. plays the unpredictable and eccentric genius detective, Sherlock Holmes, who solves intricate mysteries along with co-star Jude Law. Law, who takes on the role of Watson, Holmes’s sidekick, does so in Batman and Robin sort of fashion, but with a lot less spandex. Downey Jr. earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the first film of the two film series.

Downey Jr.’s first Oscar nomination came years before he put on an iron suit to save the masses, but he did have to but on a notable mustache. In 1992 he received an Academy Award nomination, in the category of Best Actor, for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough’s celebrated film “Chaplin.” So inspired as to truly perform as Chaplin in the film, Downey Jr. bought a house that was built for the real Charlie Chaplin in 1926. Gestures like these are really what make it obvious to see why Downey Jr. has been such a success at the box office and with critics. He received his second Oscar nomination, in the category of Best Supporting Actor, for his role

as Kirk Lazarus in the movie “Tropic Thunder”. The character of Lazarus is fittingly, a critically acclaimed method actor. Lazarus in “Tropic Thunder” has taken on the extraordinarily challenging role of playing an African American solider, although he is a white Australian. The character Lazarus goes so far as to medically change the color of his skin. His hilarious role as Kirk Lazarus earned Downey Jr. several award nominations in addition the Oscar nom, including a Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Among his less recognized roles, Downey Jr. is also a talented musician. In 2004 he released his debut album titled “The Futurist” through Sony Classics. The album featured eight original songs that displayed his musical abilities. His variety of talents showcase why he holds the position in Hollywood that he does today. Downey Jr. is rumored to continue his roles in “ Marvel’s Avengers 2,” another “Sherlock Holmes” movie and more “Iron Man” films in the next few years. But one thing that is for sure is that his seat on Hollywood’s thrown, as king, surely will not be overtaken anytime soon. The world greatly anticipates what we will see next from Robert Downey Jr.

Sportychic and luxury INTERVIEW RAQUEL RABADÁN

T

he well-known Italian outerwear brand DIEGO M Milano took their first step toward conquering the Russian market. Not long ago, the founders of the brand, Diego Mazzi and Manuela Bortolameolli, came to Moscow for a press tour. They gave an exclusive interview to Le CITY deluxe. How and at what moment did you start to feel attracted to fashion? I started to feel attracted to fashion when I was a child. My parents were in the same business so I literally grew up under the cutting desks surrounded by designs, precious fabrics and furs. It was a natural step for me to get involved in it. Over the years I passed on my passion to my wife and to my children too. How would you describe fashion “Made in Italy”? I think that the fashion “Made in Italy” is the homing beacon for the world of fashion. It gives inspiration and direction to all artists and is a guiding light of my working life. Which moral values define Diego M? DIEGO M is very much a family; we grow together with values of respect, trust and flexibility. We are willing to be helpful to each other and to the customers and everyone contributes to this growth.

How do you and your wife complement your design? What are your respective parts? We are married so we deal with some “fighting”, like all the married couples do, I guess. But we can always count on the respect, faith and support we give to each other and we work well as a team. I’m in charge of the stylistic and productive part of the company and she’s my “Talking Cricket”, giving her feminine point of view on the designs and taking care of the communications, marketing and sales. Your collections are available in the US, Europe and Russia, 3 very different regions. What differences do you notice in clientele of these countries? Each season we propose a wide range of products to satisfy the taste of a wide variety of countries. The U.S. market, for example, loves the clean and natural style of colors; comfortable trendy styles with earth colors and furs attract the European market. The Russian market for us is a great place to work as we can really use our creative flow because Russian customers are very fashionable. They love the most stylish and luxurious pieces of our collection including rich furs, unique materials and color combinations and I can literally let my inspiration run wild creating something special for this market, proposing very feminine, appealing and unique pieces, that they can really understand and appreciate.

F · DIEGO M

What is the recipe for continued growth in these difficult times?

“The Russian market for us is a great place to work as we can really use our creative flow” We never give up trying to improve our collections with intense research for materials and colors, providing the most stylish items with the best quality. Even in hard times like these, we wouldn’t give any less to our customers

PORTRAIT

The “Artist and Model” transports us to occupied France in the Second World War in which an old famous sculptor, played by Jean Rochefort, does not find any inspiration until the arrival of a young Spanish escaping from a refugee camp. That’s when he rediscovers the desire to return to work and sculpt his latest work. Aida Folch, a young model embodies an exquisite interpretation between whites and blacks of the artistic production that emphasize the theme.

Aida Folch The power of simplicity

A

ida Folch, the girl who captivated us eleven years ago in “The Shanghai Gesture”, is reunited with her discoverer, Fernando Trueba, in “The Artist and the Model”. Since then, she has evolved the same professionalism and style that she showed when her premature eroticism dazzled the audiences. In her latest performance, being dubbed Thyssen, she dazzles the audience from among many dancers vying for her heart. “The artist and the model” made an appearance at the San Sebastián Film Festival to compete for the Golden Shell of Zinemaldia 2012 as one of the favorites. How did this happen? The Festival decided that it was one of the most outstanding films. Of course the whole team was very happy because it is one of the most important international festivals in the world.

Trueba’s main theme is “stop to look at things” what do you think or feel when you stop and take a moment to look around? It is a pleasure to revel quietly in something you like. I love reading, but if I have the phone on, I don’t concentrate so I turn it off. I don’t like to rush. I’m hedonistic and I find pleasures in small things. How has it been working with Claudia Cardinale and Jean Rochefort? What have you learned from them? Very fun, enriching, a dream. I always admired them and when you meet them you respect them even more.

To be able to get a feel for this movie you went to Paris to learn French?Do you think you should study English and then try your luck in America? I constantly study English and I would love to translate it. For that I prepare myself every single day. It is a challenge that I hope to take on someday.

After “The Artist and model”, what plans do you have for the future? I’m shooting another film called “Love is not what it used to be”with Gabi Ochoa. It is a pleasure to work with young directors full of hopes and dreams. I am still working on the film “Wonder Years” and I still have to release a certain Mexican movie I am in. Along with that, we have a scheduled March release of “The Artist and model” in Paris. I’m totally looking forward to this.

what has been your greatest sacrifice and what opportunities has it provided you with? The biggest sacrifice has been my separation from my family and friends when I changed cities. The silver lining, on the other hand, is I quickly learned how to be independent. I have lived through many experiences, met interesting people and traveled a lot. How do you see the current state of the Spanish cinema? Fighting, we will move forward. We can only make few movies at a time because it is a small industry, but there are ones worth remembering like Buñuel. Which is known worldwide as a classic of our cinema. Which actor or actress would you like to work with? I would like to work with Javier Bardem again.

I also like to work with Maribel Verdú, Penelope Cruz, Veronica Echegui or Adriana Ugarte. Really I just prefer a good script rather than directors. The profession of an actress requires one to be in the public eye and the audience is dependent on your image. What do you dislike and what do you enjoy about this aspect of being an actress? How do you define your style? I feel no pressure about it. I try to have the best possible image with a nice dress and heels. I like clear, elegant things. The Parisian style is a benchmark for me. What do you liked most about the production with Le CITY deluxe? The originality of the photos and shooting them in the Thyssen Museum. I love the art and the quality of the magazine

he Thyssen-Bosnemisza museum wanted to be witness to it all and displays more than 420 pieces from the Cartier Collection, from its origins to today. This exhibition, “The Art of Cartier”, is one of the most important to date. The first time it was revealed was in the Petit Palais in Paris in 1989 and since then it was hosted by museums like the Metropolitan Museum, the Pompidou, the British, the Kremlin and the Hermitage; and now it arrives for the first time in Spain. From the Garland style to Art Deco of the 30s, from the Chinese-inspired style to the Tutti Frutti style, more than 165 years of creativity that only enhances this retrospective across multiple manifestations of the Cartier style, which earned him his reputation as “King of jewelers, jeweler of Kings “, as expressed by King Edward VII of England. The flamingo brooch of the Duchess of Windsor, created in collaboration with Jeanne Toussaint, who was the Director of the Maison Haute Joaillerie at that time, will be exhibited as well. A creation of colors illuminated by a multicolored plumage of sapphires, rubies and emeralds; calibrated interpretation of bold color pink flamingo in the tradition of naturalistic and poetic vision. In addition, for this occasion, the Palace of Monaco has agreed to lend several of their Cartier properties. Alongside the famous pieces that belonged to famous customers, you can discover the garland style tiara, a gift from King Alfonso XIII to Queen

Victoria Eugenia in 1920, an exceptional loan from the Royal Family which Queen Sofia wears at official events today. A number of recently acquired pieces by the Cartier Collection are unveiled for the first time in this exhibition, among them are the ruby and diamond necklace by Elizabeth Taylor, a gift from her third husband, Producer Mike Todd. The organization of the Cartier Collection at the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum is based on a visual journey that is seamlessly integrated into the image of the museum, next to one of the most famous collections of paintings in the world

he main challenge of Roger Dubuis has been international development. At a rapid rate it became one of the top five High Class Watch brands in the world. And this has a lot to do with JeanMarc Pontroué, the CEO of the Geneva-based manufacturer. A company that has become famous for their ability to arrange product strategies and capturing the needs of individual countries. What would you like to highlight most about Roger Dubuis? Most importantly, the watches have been manufactured with the codes of excellence in mind. A pioneering brand that targets connoisseurs of Haute Horlogerie with all the manufacturing involved in the very heart of Geneva. What are your most important product concerns at the moment? The motion. If Ferrari can’t be Ferrari without its engines, then Roger Dubuis doesn’t exist without proper movement. All of our development capacity and innovation are going to influence the SIHH13 gala, a new caliber, which will be the first on the watch market. Roger Dubuis contains four product lines. What are their main features?

We relate our four products to the universe. We are able to cater our four product lines based on four types of potential customers categorized in hypothetical archetypes: the player, the warrior, the adventurer and the diva. So far, apart from having product lines where there is no competition, no brand has gone so far as to have a fantasy world model for their product lines. What is the main market for Roger Dubuis? Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, and the United States; in addition to all emerging countries. Valencia is considered a unique market in Spain. How did it come to be such a successful location? In Valencia we are partnered with the jewelry firm Rabat. I’m not sure if it would work without our partners at the local level. Whether it’s Rabat in Spain or Swiss Union in Barcelona and Madrid, we become able to attract a clientele likely to understand our product. What is the current status of Roger Dubuis on the market? Although we cannot give exact specifics, the brand has prospered in all countries. In the market of Spain in particular, Roger Dubuis had an increase in sales by 48% last year

ow did LeBron James earn the title of villain? It’s hard to pinpoint the precise moment or provide a reasonable explanation. Perhaps it was his immaturity and occasional lack of social graces that soured his image. Perhaps it was his moodiness and frequent sullen expressions on the court that turned the public against him. For a time, James accepted this characterization as part of his public persona, stating in interviews, “You start to hear ‘the villain,’ now you have to be the villain, you know, and I started to buy into it. I started to play the game of basketball at a level, or at a mind state that I’ve never played at before ... meaning, angry.” While James felt this characterization was undeserved, explaining,“It basically turned me into somebody I wasn’t,” it did serve to mold his image into something more fascinating and more complex than mere positive popularity could have brought him.

As early as 2008, LeBron James’ Vogue cover with supermodel Gisele Bundchen sparked controversy after being blamed for contributing to the negative racial stereotype that African American men are dangerous and criminal. The shot seemed to reflect a King Kong motif with James posed as the angry, oversized gorilla, clutching a delicate white female, played by Gisele. While Vogue spokespersons denied any racial undertones, claiming it was meant to celebrate two professionals at the top of their game, critics could not help but relate the King Kong-esque image to James’ selfendorsed “King James” title. The image was widely panned as being racially insensitive, and many chastised James for not being more careful with his image. Meanwhile, James explained simply that he was, “just trying to show a little emotion.” James’most controversial moment came in 2010 with his interview special, “The Decision” in which he revealed, “I’m going to take my talents

to South Beach and join the Miami Heat.” Critics raged that by making his decision into a highly publicized event, he revealed a narcissistic need for attention or that he was tactless and alienated fans. Regardless of whether his handling of this decision was proper, James’ move to Miami gave way to “The LeBron James effect” in which NBA television ratings increased along with dramatically more traffic flow to NBA and ESPN web pages, mobile downloads and video streams. Professional basketball interest reached highs it had not experienced since Michael Jordan’s popularity and eventual retirement in 1998.

“I won’t play this game forever. But the things we’re doing in the communities…they will last.” The King James effect continues to ripple through the South Florida area. Last year, the Heat Group commissioned an economic analysis of its impact upon Miami, concluding that it is responsible for producing around $1.4 billion yearly, in addition to creating 21,000 jobs for local residents. The positive effects of this include more than $589 million annually in labor, $171 million in federal, state and local tax revenues and $918 million the for GDP. In addition to these economic fruits for the area, LeBron James is dedicated to philanthropy, which

casts him decidedly more as a hero than a villain considering his charitable record. Proceeds from the ill-received Decision special went entirely to charity, resulting in over $2.5 million for the Boys and Girls Club of America, and they presented him with the “Champion of Youth Award”in 2011. James was the only NBA player to be included in Parade Magazine’s “Most Charitable Athletes,” and he remains one of the league’s biggest supporters of charitable work. He founded the LeBron James Family Foundation that provides aid to single parent households in the Ohio area, stemming from the memory of his own childhood struggles. He also created the “Wheels for Education” program to combat school dropouts and encourage American youths to value learning. James possesses a forward thinking and concern for the community, all too rare in the world of professional athletes. He has admitted, “Kids are a huge passion of mine. I always said growing up, ‘If I ever have an opportunity … I will always try to give back as much as possible.’” As to his future

after basketball, James admirably admits, “I won’t play this game forever. But the things we’re doing in the communities, the things we’re doing in the gymnasiums, in the computer labs, they will last. When I’m done playing basketball, I can still go back ... and see what we were able to accomplish ... That’s important to me.” Those closest to James claim he is nothing like his villainous typecast, citing the fact that he has never been arrested despite being raised by a single mother with addiction problems and never knowing his father. They also defend his behavior by stating that obviously anyone in their twenties will be inclined to immaturity. In this light and considering his charitable works, shouldn’t James be heralded as a hero and true champion of the American dream? As a three time NBA MVP, nine time NBA All-Star and as of January 13, 2012, the youngest player to reach 20,000 career points, Le City Deluxe hails LeBron as Miami’s king and proof that talent, ambition and hard work can always trump mistakes, criticism and adversity

t is the year 2013, and you find yourself sitting in the living room of your palatial mansion watching your favourite programme about the British aristocracy on your wall hanging 100 inch television when, suddenly, a commercial for a car appears. You already have several high-end cars, so why would you want this one? After all, they all seem to look and feel alike anyway. British car manufacturer Jaguar has taken on the challenge of erasing their average customer’s preconceived notions. Being billed as the logical successor to the legendary E-Type of the 1960s, the F-Type class was unveiled for the very first time at the Paris Motor Show to a star studded guest list. Lana Del Rey’s appearance only served to increase the curiosity of the patrons thanks to her latest song, “Burning Desire”, which will be featured in a short film about the F-Type as the soundtrack. Speed and adrenaline junkies will be happy to know that Jaguar has opted for an all-aluminum chassis. The focus of this design choice was to increase the acceleration of the car. The lightweight material ensures that the car will not be weighed down, or even over encumbered. Providing the more gung-ho type of driver a great deal of agility and pickup. But that is only just one

factor contributing to the speed of the vehicle. The aforementioned gung-ho driver will certainly demand a great deal of roaring power under the hood. F-Type will be available to customers in three versions, each with its own class of engine. The version eponymous to the class sports a supercharged V6 engine capable of hitting speeds of 60mph in 5.1 seconds and reaching a top speed of 161. The most powerful of the class is the FType V8S featuring, as the name would suggest, a supercharged V8 engine, reaching 0-60 in 4.2 seconds and topping out at 186mph. The sports-car is currently not available with a manual transmission, but thanks to Jaguars good reputation when it comes to taking user feedback, we can be sure that a manual model will be made available. Satisfying any need a sports-car enthusiast may have

or the first time in the history of the company, the super crossover evokes no ordinary feelings. The developers were able to instill in this model the elegance and design inherent in all vehicles of this brand, but in a completely new format. Bentley does not recognize conventional limits, but sets its own. The exquisite interior concept is made with a careful attention to detail. A bright, modern interior design with traditional British style distinguishes the new EXP 9 F. SUV components. There is internal decoration included around a large touch screen, which allows control of the entertainment system, making its operation user-friendly. The car’s design is based on the six-liter Bentley W12, and its dynamic characteristics justify more demanding requirements and expectations.

M · BENTLEY

The power unit W12 engine, for example, can work up to 600 HP and provides a torque of 800 Nm, and acceleration time from 0 to 100 km per hour in less than 5 seconds. Undoubtedly, claiming a new standard for all-wheel drive SUV. The skin colored Bentley EXP 9 F emphasizes the power, reliability and strength of the crossover. Curved surfaces once again show us the progressive and constructive design approach. Stylish turbines fully associated with the “relief ” body design, and its wheel spokes are similar to the blade turbofan. Looking at the model, it is impos-

sible not to see the handwriting. The design of the rear door and the double doors give a guarantee of versatility during various trips. The dominant feature is, of course, the driver’s seat combined with spacious and sociable interior, which is the natural choice for both on-road and off-road. Bentley EXP 9 F - The release date for the exhibition model, unfortunately, has not yet been set. We can only wait till the “innovators”in Britain present the world market the crossover, and we will see its power in action

Juan Mari Arzak “Seeing the world through a chef´s eyes”

INTERVIEW Toni Delgado / PHOTO Jesús M Pemán

T

he house where you´d find Restaurante Arzak was built at the end of the nineteenth century. It´s a silent witness to the evolution of a basque cuisine that developed over more than a century of family tradition. Today, this house is a temple for a leading world cuisine. Juan Mari Arzak continues to fully navigate this historical endeavor while constantly looking towards the future. A lifetime in this house... This house was built by my grandfather. I was born here and have lived here all my life. My uncle built a tavern in the lowest level. Later, my parents continued on here. Then me, and now my daughter, Elena, is the one that continues with the tradition in this same house. There is a lot of tradition and history, but you

were amongst the pioneers in the so called “New Basque Cuisine.” Exactly. We started with this idea in 1975 at a culinary roundtable that was organized by Gourmet magazine. Wasn´t this a risk during a time of full-on political and social transition in Spain in the 70s? Yes, it was a little difficult. I had some luck and the restaurant was run by my mother (I lost my dad when I was 9). She mostly cooked for weddings and she was really well known. She allowed me to occupy a small dining room in which I was able to present my proposals. How did your mother handle the change of direction in your career? Initially, you wanted to be a foreman builder. Well she didn´t take it too well! (He laughs). It

M · JUAN MARI ARZAK

was hard for her, but in time she was convinced about my passion. What came first, family recognition or public recognition? You know what? At home, the idea of recognition doesn´t appeal to us very much. We are working, we see eachother every day, it´s a daily thing. For example, my daughter has been named “the best chef in the world.”But sometimes I forget this, even when she is next to me. (He laughs).

“It´s important never to lose the ability to impress” But to be recognized as the “best chef ” is a challenge when there is Juan Mari Arzak working in the same kitchen. It´s all success isn´t it? Of course. It´s something I am very proud of. Although at home, we believe that what you need to do is carry out and complete your job to the best of your ability every single day. The clients that walk out the door should leave content. That is the goal. Was it as complicated for Elena as it was for you when she told her mother she wanted to dedicate herself to the culinary world too? You have to realize that our house was here in front of the restaurant. Therefore, we practically lived in the restaurant. Elena helped out a lot. In a family business everyone helps out, and she wasn´t any exception.

What percentage of tradition and what percentage of innovation do we find here in Arzak? Everything is mixed! Our objective is to conserve the spirit of the traditional basque cuisine. But this was all accomplished through a blend of research, development and innovative design. And how do you reach that perfect balance? First of all, you have to work with the product from Square 1.... a good, first quality meat or fish. Next, we use ingredients from diverse provinces to reinvent the dish: salts, peppers, herbs, seeds, etc., although we have to like them, and above all else, they should blend well with the flavors of our basque cuisine. Is there a globalization that emerges in the culinary world thanks to the mix of ingredients? I am against globalization when it comes to

M · JUAN MARI ARZAK

cuisine. I find it interesting to be aware of where you are in each moment through the dishes you enjoy. Each country, each region has it´s own identity. For example, Spain is a mosaic of cultures, especially gastronomically. Does a direct relationship exist between the cultural level and the gastronomic level of each region? Totally. These are two paralells. Let´s consider historically young, or newer, countries such as Australia and the United States. In historically older cultures and tradition, a better cuisine corresponds. Without history, a good gastronomic base does not exist.

Alter so many years of impressing your clients, how do you maintain the level you´ve achieved? You don´t have to go crazy. Through studies and a career, you will be a great chef. But to reach excellence, you have to be been born to do it. You have to look at the world through the eyes of a chef. I am constantly taking notes, and it´s important never to lose the ability to impress. In Arzak we create somewhere between 40 and 50 new dishes each year. This gives me life and reminds me that not everything has been done nor created. Actually, it´s always the same. The secret? Work, investigation, evolution, leadership, and of course, a good dose of humility

rown in a unique and exemplary ecosystem, Switzerland’s own Tropenhaus Frutigen presents a very exclusive brand of black caviar called OONA, the first of its kind in their native homeland. We contacted the CEO of the company, Mr. Baillods, to get to know a little bit more about this fabulous product. How did you come up with the idea to create such a unique product? When a long train tunnel was constructed through the Swiss Alps, warm water flowed from the mountains from underground springs. Because we didn’t want to waste this thermal energy we thought of building a green house for tropical plants and fruits. The warmth of the water is hence used to heat the green house and is then cooled down through a heat exchanger. Furthermore we wanted to use this now slightly colder water in a profitable and unique way. Before diverting the water into the local rivers, it first flows through our basins. These basins contain Siberian Sturgeons (Acipenser Baerii), and we use our special water in order to harvest their caviar – the first and only caviar harvested in Switzerland. We wanted to create something sustainable and unique, achieving international prestige and earn money.

What makes your caviar different from the others? The clear spring water gives the caviar a very pure taste. This creates a freshness much like a mountain wind. The nutty aroma will remind the

The perfection of millions of years of production – and a little bit of Switzerland. consumers of an alpine hayfield, which is precious to the culture of the Swiss Alps. It is an amalgamation of all that is offered by the mountains.

Which philosophy did you use during the creation process? Sustainability is at the top of our priorities list. We use electricity produced from fluid energy created by the water similar to a hydroelectric dam, and also from solar power gathered from various panels. We reap the benefits of the water’s warmth, and the organic waste. We believe that it is very important our customers get the full picture and thus we ensure great transparency. The public is more than welcome to visit our location as guests.

Caviar combines the qualities of a luxurious artisan’s product. What traditions and knowledge have you followed to create such a kind of standard? Our Oona Caviar stands for the finest craftsmanship. The “Ice Cube” shows our uniqueness as well as luxury. The Caviar is produced in a very traditional way, step by step and through careful work by hand. Each batch is individually controlled, evaluated and filled. Every tin is unique, pure, and absolute.

What inspired you to create the extraordinary design for the “Ice Cube”? Our inspiration for the design of the “Ice Cube” glass container came from three things: the ice which delivers the pure water, the mountains, and of course the caviar. The black bowl within the “Ice Cube” is a representation, is a symbol of a single Sturgeon roe found within a dish of caviar.

What experience in authenticity will the clients have after degustation of OONA caviar? Pure pleasure. Being able to feel and experience how caviar can and should taste. A piece of clarity and birth of something unique. The perfection of millions of years of production – and a little bit of Switzerland

Discovering Northern Morocco ‘From Beatniks to Berbers’

The bohemian port city of Tangier and the nearby aquamarine mountain village of Chefchaouen capture the magic and mystery of authentic North African culture and cuisine.

T

he vintage cream Mercedes ‘Grand Taxi’ idles up the steep, narrow lane from the port towards the Medina. This short journey is an intoxicating experience. Passing crumbling fin-de-siècle colonial mansions and alluring Arab archways, the smells, sights and sounds swiftly plunge you into this city’s gregarious, noisy and frantic way of life. This is Tangier, famous for being an International Zone in the first half of the twentieth century whilst Spain, Britain and France jostled for diplomatic and political superiority here. This bohemian city became home to spies, artists and writers of the Beat generation. William Burroughs and Truman Capote were at the centre of a creative community that also attracted Francis Bacon, Joe Orton and the US writer Paul Bowles. Medieval Medina Arriving in the Medina, one is immersed in a

world where modern life collides with medieval architecture; where Europe, Africa and Arabia blend to deliver an exhilarating, unique experience. Although the enchanting and spellbinding qualities of Morocco’s Imperial Cities are worldfamous, over recent years they have become more and more commercialised. This has led to cities like Tangier experiencing a genuine creative and commercial renaissance as people search for the authentic Morocco, leaving behind westernised Marrakesh. Where once only humble Maison d’hôte offered accommodation, there are now upscale luxury boutique hotels in the old town. Stay at the ‘Nord Pinus Tanger’, owned and styled by Anne Igou, of the original Nord Pinus in the South of France. Anne has a wonderful aesthetic, a creative eye that allows her to find interesting and unique pieces and furniture that sit wonderfully together, creating a seductive ambiance.

Boutique Hotels The Nord Pinus Tanger is a real treasure. It is within the original Kasbah in Tangier’s Medina, the former Sultan’s castle. It affords stunning views across the Strait towards Spain’s Andalucía, and is full of breathtaking original Moorish features as well as some beautiful antique, and vintage African and European furniture. Tangier is the perfect gateway to Morocco. Both its old and new towns are captivating and full of life. The souks, with their narrow, dimly lit streets and passageways are the perfect place to find beautiful handmade rugs, robust Fez pottery as well as unusual foods, spices, teas, and soaps – and

remember to batter over the price in good nature and with humour. City Cuisine Eating out also a great pleasure. The ‘Populaire Saveur de Poisson’ still offers an exceptional set menu of fish and seafood in an authentic setting, with a head waiter and owner that are full of character. ‘Agadir’ is another city institution. It’s a bijou, simple Moroccan restaurant with a tiny kitchen but the cook turns out exceptional classic dishes, served with interesting Moroccan wines. Try also ‘Casa d’Italia’ in the beautiful setting of the ‘Palais de Mouley Hafid’. It may seem odd going to Morocco for Italian food, but it’s

T · M ORROCO

a wonderfully surreal experience. Classic Italian dishes are served by waiters in black tie, on a 1950s terrace surrounded by the Islamic craftsmanship and exotic palms of this staggering ancient Sultan’s palace! Labyrinthine Chefchaouen Just a few hours’drive south east of Tangier, is the striking azure mountain village of Chefchaouen. This ancient Berber community is recognised for its extraordinary sixteenth century labyrinthine old town that appears lost in time, painted in shades of blue, mauve and aquamarine. Walking its narrow streets becomes mesmerising, as if in an underwater Atlantis, where subtle pastel shades blend to create an unexpected experience. The maze of mauve and turquoise alleys of Chefchaouen is full of aroma and colour, punctuated by Lilliputian doorways, as if from a fairytale. Access to this wonderful ancient medina is impossible by car, so park by the city walls and walk to one of the elegant yet simple boutique Riad hotels. Many of the old town’s distinctive courtyard properties or ‘Dar’ that have been converted into boutique guest houses and hotels that offer comfort and even luxury yet with plenty of authentic touches. Tagines & Couscous The food here is astonishingly good. One of the best known is ‘Restaurant Tissemlal’ in the Casa Hassan Hotel. It offers authentic dishes, including ubiquitous couscous and tagines. Be-

ing a vegetarian here is a joy, as there is a wide choice of non meat dishes, whilst the carnivores can tuck into richly-spiced, slowed-cooked stews with dried fruits and nuts served in iconic tagine plates topped with heavy conical clay lids. This is perfect hearty food that tastes even better after a day’s trekking in the Rif Mountains; or exploring the village’s artisan stalls; or following a robust massage in one of the local Hammam baths. Northern Morocco is one of the world’s great frontiers, where Europe meets Africa, Christian meets Muslim, and the developed world directly touches the developing. It’s a place where you don’t feel like a tourist, you feel like a traveller, truly immersed in a rich and fascinating culture that feels worlds away from home

Since most of the carpets from the collection are hand-knotted and made from top-quality pashmina wool, they still boast a distinct sheen. They have retained their vivid colours, as only the choicest dyes were used on them.“The colour red was derived from madder, a creeper found in certain parts of the world. The blue came from indigo, a plant found originally in India, and then exported to the West and Persia,” says Chandra. Natural ingredients were used in place of processed dyes to create primary colours in those times, which were then mixed to derive secondary shades: crushed pomegranate seeds gave a red hue, walnuts emitted brown, saffron, marigolds, or the outer skin of pomegranates exuded yellow. Different hues could also be extracted from the same ingredient by varying the levels of mordant (a fixing agent), while preparing the dye. Each of these antique carpets has its own distinctive pattern, with a meaning behind it. Two of the most popular designs found in this collection are the ‘Tree of Life’ and the ‘Garden of Paradise’. “The Tree of Life is a famous 16thcentury Persian design. Interestingly, these two symbols have also been referred to in Quranic verses, old paintings, ancient Islamic scriptures, and religious texts. The Tree of

Life represents harmony between the three worlds; humanity on ground, birds that fly in the sky, and what lies beneath the earth. The Garden of Paradise also symbolizes the harmony between humans and nature,”says Chandra. One can spot various animals, and flowers – from roses to poppies, carnations to irises – and in some cases, even palaces and other structures. The flowers stand for love and humanity, while the lattice pattern that can be spotted in a few of the pieces, were inspired from architecture. “Some of the pieces in this collection feature marble jalis or screens spotted on Mughal-era monuments like the Taj Mahal or the Red Fort,” says Chandra. Motifs of rams, peacocks, stars, and constellations add a measure of good luck, as does the evil-eye pattern. As a custom, many families gave carpets with symbols of rams – which is a sign of virility in some cultures – to their daughters as part of their trousseau. Symbolism in carpet iconography can also betray the origin of the piece. Old Persian carpets tend to be named after the place where they were made or the weavers who created them. The Lavar Kermans in this collection take their name from a town called Lavar near the Kerman province in south-central Iran, known for its fine, woven, floral decorative rugs,

D · RUGS NEW DELHI

generally custom-made for the Shah of Iran. The Dabeer Kashans were created by master weavers of their time, Mohtesam and Dabeer, who also catered to the Shah. A few in this collection were fashioned by another weaver called Hadji Jalili. The pedigree of the rugs made by these weavers far exceed any other, since they used the highest-grade wool and dyes, and also benefitted from the luxury of time. A 6ft x 4ft carpet, the smallest in the Chandras’collection, could have taken anything from seven months to a year to make, while the largest in the collection – a 22ft x 14ft – carpet could easily have consumed anywhere between 1-5 years. “A king or an aristocrat would commission a piece to the master weaver and ask him to make a bespoke piece; and he was willing to pay the price. The weavers would take years to finish a carpet from scratch and took great pride in their oeuvre. They had workshops for 300-400 years with 8th- or 10th-generation weavers. That would be the reputation of a workshop,” says Chandra. Besides pashmina, some piecesin this 100-yearold collection are crafted out of kurk wool, shorn from the chest and shoulders of sheep or goats found high up in the mountains. The higher the animals live in the mountains, the thinner the hair, and the finer the wool. The original 26-piece collection has now however been reduced to 23 as Chandra has recently sold a few pieces to collectors. The origin of The Carpet Cellar dates back to about 35 years ago, when Chandra’s uncle saw an advertisement in d luck, asa newspaper about a retired colonel who had fought m, manyin World War II, and had collected a number of carf rams –pets during his travels, which he wanted to sell. This tures – tomarked the beginning of a love affair between carpets eau. and Sheel Chandra. “My uncle couldn’t sleep for a can also few nights after he bought the rugs, thinking of how Persian beautiful they were,” says Chandra. PAUL KERR Chief Executive Officer

S

tarting from humble beginnings gives a person a good deal of perspective, drive, and the necessary tools to excel. People the likes of Oprah Winfrey and J.K. Rowling inspire us with their rags to riches stories and show us that anyone can achieve anything. But it also poses an interesting question. Would these people be where they are today if they had an easy life? Well one thing is for sure, it can help the wanderer on life’s journey to develop a philosophy. And UK born Chief Executive Officer of Small Luxury Hotels Paul Kerr’s life is no exception. Much like a lot of people in their university years, he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. For many years, he would constantly find himself looking up from the bottom of a well, dreaming of the day his hard work pays off and is able to climb out. So he did what any good philosopher would do when faced with a question. He began to think. Initially, he had the desire to go into medicine. He mulled it over for some time, but ultimately had to change his mind as he did not have the necessary grades. But then he a flash of inspiration that would guide him through the rest of his life. He decided to work in the luxury hotel business, and he knew just how he was going to do it. Following in the footsteps of his godfather, he eventually settled on wanting to be an accountant. With a clear path to his goal in mind, Mr. Kerr put himself through school by getting a job flipping burgers on the side. After all, school costs money and he knew it wouldn’t get any cheaper. Mr. Kerr’s perseverance paid off,

and allowed him to work as an accountant. With that, he received his first taste of the luxury hotel business with Cunard Hotels and Resort. Paul was finally able to climb out of the well and bask in the sunlight of achieving his goal. A proud moment for him, indeed, but certainly was not a moment for him to rest on his laurels. He knows that in order to stay within the hotel business, he must keep evolving. And to keep evolving, Paul must always be learning. The UK, in 1989, was experiencing a property crash. Mr. Kerr was, at the time, working for the Ritz Hotel chain, among others. The hotels were not in the best of shape because of the “property

H · S M ALL LUXU RY

crash”, and it was Kerr’s job to deal with the problems that arose. As you can imagine, he had his work cut out for him. Slowly but surely, his name within the circles of the luxury hotel business began to reach new heights. Falling under

“Our brand offers a completely different experience than the international chains you mentioned trying to get a ‘piece of the boutique pie’” the recently formed prevue of the non-profit “semi-governing body”, “Small Luxury Hotels”, meant there was a vested interest in Paul Kerr’s comings, goings, and doings. It wasn’t long before some keen eyes within SLH began to take notice of Paul’s talents. Thus beginning Kerr’s meteoric march up the ladder and cementing his position within the company. Paul Kerr’s leadership has allowed the Small Luxury Hotels organization to experience a rather

large expansion, one that has not been since the creation of the non-profit in the eighties. Kerr has presided over the inclusion of over 520 hotels in more than 70 countries, all of which qualify as luxury. This is an impressive feet even if you don’t consider the fact that SLH was responsible for only 70 hotels in 12 countries when Mr. Kerr first started working as CEO of the company. Quoting Mr. Kerr, “Our brand offers a completely different experience than the international chains you mentioned trying to get a ‘piece of the boutique pie’”. The company has turned into a veritable United Nations of luxury hotels. “One of the biggest changes in the industry is the introduction of executive floors - this is an attempt by the big hotels to offer a more personalized service. A small hotel in a big hotel”, says Paul Kerr as he demonstrates his acumen for trends. All this was possible thanks to Paul Kerr’s philosophy of constantly learning, always improving, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. A skill he picked up in his youth when he was trying to become an accountant. So with that I return you to the original question. Would all this be possible if Mr. Paul Kerr did not struggle to reach where he is today, and learn what it means to work hard? Would he have done as much if he was just merely smart? That is really the eternal question of the human condition. Are we the product of our environment? Or are we, not to quote a Lady Gaga song, just born this way? We may never know

T

he Four Seasons, known for it’s impressive luxury status, a place where you can experience heaven on earth, has now surpass all the expectations. Sophisticated and elegant, the Four Seasons’ Paris penthouse is an absolute highlight for the well-known luxury hotel brand. Located on the eight floor, the suite provides its guests with a stunning 360degrees view over the city, including the Eiffel Tower. A romantic private Parisian hideaway in the city of love. Located in an exclusive 1928th landmark just of the Champs-Elysées, the penthouse breaths the same classical style as the residence. This sumptuous penthouse features a breathtaking design by the famous French architect Pierre-Yves

Rochon. With its soothing color palette and mix of luxurious antique and contemporary furniture, you immediately are under the impression you’ve entered the reinvented Renaissance. The beautiful soft tones of the flooring are reflected in the walls decoration with sycamore and majilite as well as the inner garden that is created by Jeff Leatham, artistic director of The Four Seasons. Lighting sources, adjustable to the time of day, are responsible for the creation of an open, airy and bright space and with its six terraces the Parisian view is infinite. A place where time doesn’t exist anymore, a place where relaxation comes easily. A stunning highlight that can’t be left out is the delightful marble bathroom that’s soaked in luxury. With its enormous walk-in-shower and even bigger bath, this is the ultimate spot in the residence to come to oneself. Brighten up with

graceful white orchids, the bathroom appears to be outside, while a natural lightened dressing room is decorated like a boudoir.

“A place where time doesn’t exist anymore, a place where relaxation comes easily“ Another highlight of this penthouse is the stately winter garden, a space decorated in floral

style, separated from the living room by a wrought iron door. By far the best spot in the residence to enjoy an appetizer while swooning away by the American Cathedral or the Eiffel Tower. If that’s not enough, you can enter the bow shaped terrace to discover more of Paris’ iconic landmarks like the Sacré Coeur, the roofs of the Madeleine, the Opera and the Pantheon. Lastly the penthouse provides an intimate upper balcony, which seems to touch the sky, where you can enjoy absolute quietness and escape the lively city of Paris. he den Clinic is ranked among the top five most beautiful dental clinics in the world, which is no surprise. Located in Barcelona’s Via Augusta, it’s far from the conventional stereotype of a cold slightly unwelcoming office of dentists. In addition to its aesthetic, “the team of doctors consists of highly skilled specialists, who together with state of the art 3D radiology technology guarantee a high quality of diagnostics” tells Pablo Rial, CEO of the den Clinic. A study by the Dental Council of Spain discovered that 54% of men are very concerned about their dental health aesthetics.“Many women think that the greatest treasure of men is a beautiful smile,” Rial said. And that is why, in a society as highly competitive as ours, “men want more whitening, and as a result they have fewer dental problems than women. After a divorce, and when they turn 40 men tend to want to ‘renew’,” says the Doctor Rial. Today, health is synonymous with beauty and the perception is that it adds a lot of weight in a person’s social life, which is why the den Clinic provides all dental specialties and differentiated services to give you a perfect smile
