“We are deep into the Leachman program. We want it all! We are using two tools: $Profit bulls and DNA testing. Our goals are to have quiet temperaments, wean a high percentage of good, healthy calves at an early age and produce feed lot cattle that really put on the weight with high daily gain and feed efficiency. We want to harvest the calves at 12 – 13 months of age and earn as many carcass premiums as possible.”

“Our cows winter graze and range calve on high, semi-arid ranges from 5000’ to 8500’. We do not feed hay, but do supplement with protein tubs. Our total carrying capacity is limited by our public range carrying capacity limits. Year in and year out we are around 1400 cows. We keep very close track of what the cows are doing: ●

90% pregnant on our yearling heifers in a short, 30 day season with timed AI and natural service cleanup. 96%+ pregnancy on the cowherd. We then sell any bred cow that will not calve in the first 45 days. 92% - 95% weaned calves/pregnant cows depending on Spring storms.

These numbers have all improved over the last 15 years as the cows were increasingly the result of high $Profit Leachman Stabilizer bulls.”

“We’ve been AI’ing to high carcass merit bulls for 25 years. Some were good, others were not. The Leachman bulls

do more good things that are right and less bad things that are wrong.” “The efficiency stuff is coming into play. We weigh and test all our feed, and our cows will not eat as much as the nutritionists say they should.”

I like to brag about our steers to my neighbors‌ For me, high quality is more than just getting a 80 or 90% choice. I want the big premiums – CAB and Prime. Jerry Kusser

Plus, I want conversion!

~ Jerry Kusser K Lazy K Ranch Highmore, SD

Real world results: K Lazy K Ranch is a reputation producer of high quality steers. Feeders and packers like bidding on their string of 500+ steers and feeding them to hit high

When fed naturally, the steers will grade well over 50% prime. When fed conventionally, the steers will convert at better than 5 to 1. Today, the challenge is to add carcass weight while still hold-

quality markets.

ing cow size steady. Steer sired by Visionary.

The K Lazy K Ranch also participates as a Leachman test herd. By artificially inseminating over 800 females, large sire groups are created. The steers are then fed in sire groups to collect feed intake data. This allows the real world verification of the Intake and F:G breeding values calculated on all Leachman animals. With data

on six calf crops, the K Lazy K herd has repeatedly shown that the EPDs accurately predict the feed conversion of the steer calves in the feedlot.

“The Kusser calves have changed dramatically since 2009.

At Decatur County, we saw the conversion improve from 6 to 1 down to 4.8 to 1. When fed NHTC, the cattle graded over 60% prime. They are making huge, multi-trait progress! ~ Kevin Unger, Resource Mgr. Lincoln County Feed Yard Stapleton, NE

“I started managing the ranch nearly 30 years ago... Chase Hibbard and Cooper Sieben Sieben Live Stock Company

My first experience with composites, EPD’s and crossbreeding science came from sheep. We starting using the Targhee in 1951. It is a USDA developed, 4 way cross composite sheep breed. Our Targhee rams are very much in demand. Now we are applying the same strategies in our cattle for two reasons:

First, I really like the idea of using composite bulls to bring heterosis back into our herd which is now almost straight Angus. Second, we are very happy with the direction of the proven index that Lee Leachman has built. Both of these reasons led us to Leachman Stabilizer bulls and the $Profit index – Three year old females by Leachman Stabilizer bulls.

Page 12

AND, the market place has dramat- ically rewarded us for our efforts!”

“No single step has made our ranch into a sustainable operation… Sieben innovations for economic and environmental sustainability include: ● ●

Controlled grazing in a rest-rotation. Utilize sheep to complement the grazing of the cattle. Selective logging combined with returning biomass to the soil. Calve later to reduce hay and labor by 40% or more.

It took us a long time to get good at doing it the traditional way, and it is taking a while to get good at doing it the new way.”

They have optimum milk, breed back, do better, and sell well.” ~ Gerald Colton G & B Colton Ranches Baker City, OR

Gerald and Bonnie Colton have been coming to Leachman Cattle for over 15 years. They have invested in over 70 Leachman Stabilizer bulls. As the pictures show, they run in tough desert country east of Baker City, Oregon. Their range only gets 9 to 10” of rain. When we visited in 2015, it was one of the driest years on record. As Gerald said, “If our sagebrush was a forage, the dust was a mineral, and our rocks were an ore – then this would be paradise!” Jon Levy, helps the Colton’s market their calves through Intermountain Livestock Auction in La Grande, OR. He states, “These Colton Ranch Stabilizer cattle have a really good reputation out here. The cattle always do better than they should…. If I had to go home and take over the family operation, I would do exactly what Gerald is doing with his Stabilizer cattle.” (970) 568-3983

“100% of our wet two-yearold heifers, with calves at side, bred back for their second calf. All 78 head in 2013 and all 82 head in 2014! The first year I thought it was just luck – it has never happened before. It’s hard to believe. 100% is probably a fluke. But for sure it would not happen if the cattle were not well managed and highly fertile.”

“In 2002, my son, Curt, came home from college and suggested that they try crossbreeding. Our straight Angus cowherd had been getting too big and too hard to keep. We couldn’t pack enough feed to them. So the next year, we went to Leachman Cattle in Billings for our first Stabilizer bulls. We were worried about keeping the cattle even. As it has turned out, the Stabilizers produce few outliers. They breed true and we like them. They moderated our mature cow size and milk and are easier to keep. I’ve been impressed with Leachman’s $Profit and Feed Efficiency selection. Efficiency is important – right up there as one of our top criteria for picking bulls. Consumption and conversion are not going to stay on the back burner. It is not only important for feeder cattle, but for our cowherds to eat less too. Leachman has led the charge towards feed consumption and indexes.”

Every cow and calf is paired out.

The IX Ranch is a large, multi-generational, commercial, cow/ calf operation located southeast of Big Sandy, MT. The Roth family has managed the ranch for three generations. They are precise managers of their land, people, and cattle. The ranches goals revolve around preservation of their natural resources and superior economic returns. They know that they cannot manage what they do not measure! Each year, the ranch works with Dr. Stan Bevers, an economist from Texas A&M, to evaluate benchmarks on key performance indicators that drive ranch profitability. Through their extensive records, they are able to closely monitor the production success of the ranch. The ranch is divided up into east and west divisions overseen by long-time managers, Rusty Sparks and Todd Amsbaugh. The ranch also relies heavily on annual internship employees.

with very few yield grade fours. Our cows breed up over 90% in a 60 day period in very high, rugged, mountain country. The cattle are really sound, milk well, and make great replacements. Going on 20 years, they have been good cattle for me! ~ Bill Trampe Trampe Ranch Gunnison, CO

Stabilizers Work Great in High Country! A two year old, Hereford x Angus heifer at Nottingham Ranch with a Trinity bull calf. The Nottingham Ranch runs from 6,200 feet to over 11,000 feet on both sides of the Colorado River. The herd has been developed using top Angus and Hereford genetics for decades.

Jim Tomlinson – a Colorado native is the ranch manager. Jim is already seeing an advantage in the survival rates of the Stabilizer calves from birth to weaning. He explains, “We AI’d our yearlings to two of Leachman’s best low birth weight and low PAP bulls – Trinity and Yosemite. They calved easily and we didn’t lose a single calf to brisket from birth to weaning. Our very lofty goal is to wean 94% from pregnant cows at this elevation!”

$Profit Works— “We buy better bulls for less by doing our $Profit homework. We do lots of homework before sale day. This spring we bought six Leachman bulls under the sale average for $6,375 each. They averaged $11,972 $Profit – that ranks them in the top 1% of the industry’s 2014 crop! Our 1,250 lb. cows produce 650 lb. steer calves at seven months and 1,400-1,500 pound fats when finished. We have shopped at Leachmans for nearly 20 years….” ~ Tom McMillan, McMillan Ranch Co, Milburn, NE

“I use AI to stack the best Leachman sires in my herd – it reads like a who’s who of their top sires. The high $Profit bulls are really advancing our program. Visionary topped our 2015 feed efficiency test. His steer progeny were quite a bit better with a high ADG of 4.48 and more efficient with a low 4.98 to 1 pounds of feed per pound of gain – the other two sires were under four on gain and over five on feed to gain. This data really opened my eyes! Visionary, Feb. 2016

They’re all sired by Leachman $Profit bulls. My steer calves off their mother brought top total dollar… in 2014 at $1,697 per head ($2.39 net x 710 lbs. pay weight). 85% of all my heifer calves make quality bred yearling replacements.
