Sweetwater Ranch is using high $Profit Stabilizers to build great replacements AND great feedlot cattle. Chad Williams, Manager and Bob Schmidt, Owner of Sweetwater Ranch
“Bob wants low cost, moderate cows; but I also want steers that hit it out of the park.“
~ Chad Williams Sweetwater Ranch, Hays, KS
For Bob, this means keeping cow size moderate. Nonetheless, Chad wants steers that have growth and carcass merit that will rank high in the industry. By measuring all traits and balancing them with $Profit, the Sweetwater Ranch is hitting both goals. The Sweetwater replacement females, pictured below, will check all of the boxes. They fit the environment, are easy fleshing, calve without difficulty, and raise good calves.

Over 70 sons will be offered this spring! The Trinity legend continues! Rarely does a sire exceed all expectations once he is
proven. Trinity progeny have been tested extensively in our system and they consistently excel in nearly evcery trait. No bull is perfect, but Trinity is absolutely our pick for one of the best balanced, well proven, low birth, high $Profit bulls in the industry. He sires very attractive progeny that have the look of a British animal with the heterosis and performance of a hybrid. Trinity is a legitimate 4-star calving ease bull, yet gives up nothing at weaning with his outstanding birth to yearling spread! Given his 3/4SM-1/4AN breed make up, both seedstock producers and commercial cattlemen with a heavily Angus-influenced cow herd should seriously consider using this proven herd sire. Trinity is siring some of the most profitable herd sires in the industry, and has produced some of the most sound and productive females in the Leachman system.

“We have AI’d our heifers to Trinity and Testify and have purchased more than 20 Trinity sons through the years. Now over half of our cowherd has Trinity influence. These daughters have improved our herd faster than we thought possible!”
~ Trace Walker, Rolling Hills Ranch Brookville, KS
Although this legend will live on for many years through his sons and daughters, the opportunity to raise actual Trinity progeny is limited. In 2016, Trinity passed away. To date, we have a large enough bank of semen to offer generous volume discounts, at least for now. Reserve your order early to ensure current volume pricing.

High Country is a 4-star calving ease Trinity son with low PAP! As a yearling, he was the High selling bull in the 2015 Leachman High Altitude Sale in Loma, CO. One of the requirements of this sale is to be developed above 8,000 feet in rough mountain country and be PAP tested while there. High Country scored a 39 on his PAP test which attributes to his negative PAP EPD. High Country is very long made with good balance. He has a large ribeye, super low F:G and Intake EPDs and will moderate mature weight. His profile has very good balance with better than the Top 1% for both $Ranch and $Feeder. Over 30 sons will be offered this spring! Testify has become our favorite proven calving ease son of Trinity. His progeny not
only solidified him as a 5-star calving ease sire, but the calves are impressive in their kind, shape, and substance. Testify’s refined Angus type adds a very eye appealing, moderate look while maintaining hybrid vigor. He ranks above the Top 1% for BW, but he’s not just a heifer bull! If you would like to moderate size and birth weight in your herd while maintaining adequate growth (Top one-third) and carcass (Top 1% IMF) he is a very relevant option. To boot -- he is a very sound bull with an excellent disposition. Testify is also one of the lower intake sires we have tested and ranks above Top 1% for $Profit in the Leachman Stabilizer database at $14,203. We have used him heavily in the Leachman cooperator and test herd systems. He works at altitude as well, with a -1.65 PAP EPD! Testify at that age. They both have the right shaped head and shoulders for calving ease with adequate muscling throughout. Because of his lineage, design and EPDs we feel very comfortable that Judge will be a true sleep easy option for heifers. Yosemite is a herd changer! He represents the moderation and efficiency that many cattlemen
are seeking. Moderate stature, mild-manner, correct structure and muscle expression is what catches the cattlemen’s eye for this bull physically, but his best asset is that he is a highly proven 5-star calving sire that can be used on your Trinity influenced females. He has been used heavily in our Cooperator system and has been tested against other proven sires in our test herd program. His test herd data proved that his progeny are well below average for birth, and still excel in the feed yard. Yosemite can be used on heifers with confidence, but should also be considered for cows, as he will increase carcass quality, decrease your feed bill and moderate mature size. On Top of that, he will add hybrid vigor Yosemite has sired some of to a predominantly SimAngus cow base! the best cows in the Owners: Leachman Cattle of Colorado, R Genetics & Rod Cook.

Because of Trinity and Shear Force’s heavy influence we find this non-related, homozygous black and polled, Top 1% API, SimAngus herd bull prospect, very intriguing. In the Stabilizer system there is always a desire to continue to expand the gene pool by adding high record outcross genetics. Apollo is a great example of that. He is a deep, easy-fleshing, thick bull with great structure, feet and legs. He is in the Top 1% of the Gelbvieh breed for MARB and FPI, and Top 10% or better for: CED, WW, YW, TM, CME, PG30, CW and REA.

Doc is a big time growth bull with a huge ribeye! Unfortunately, we predict that Doc’s
progeny are going to eat more than average, BUT notice that he still ranks in in the Top 1% for Feed:Gain. How could this be you ask? Conversion! Although the best solution to feed efficiency is to eat less and gain more, eating more and gaining ALOT more is also efficient. Typically when someone tells you they have efficient cattle, but they don’t test for it, they actually have cattle that eat less and gain less. This approach really gains nothing, because what you gain in feed savings, you give up in loss of production. Doc is a Homozygous black Yosemite son with worlds of width, capacity and overall dimension. Let his Top 1% $Feeder, Feed:Gain, WW, YW, REA, 2% IMF and 5-star Feed/Carc score earn you big premiums in the feed yard!

Porterhouse is one of our favorite proven SimAngus herd sires! With heavy use in both the Leachman system, and our Test Herd Program, we are confident in his ability to produce deep-bodied, highly feed efficient cattle that will moderate mature weight and increase profit both on the ranch and in the feedlot. Porterhouse has proven to be one of the Top maternal sires in the system. He has also become the most proven “go-to” source of low PAP for high altitude ranchers. If you have been searching for a homozygous black and polled descendent of Shear Force that will increase efficiency and profitability, look no further. High altitude ranchers love Porterhouse and his sons. He has earned a -2.2 PAP EPD with over 100 progeny tested. This ranks in the Top 1% of all Leachman PAP EPDs.

Use of the Leachman system is allowing these family operations to build profitability and sustainability in their businesses. “Our goal has been to make our herd as efficient as possible. We want cattle to adapt to the environment, not the other way around. Through working with Sam and the leachman program we have found the tools to help us achieve these goals. The retained heterosis and feed efficiency of the stabilizer sires we are using are helping us reach these goals faster than we imagined.”
Kendall and Jason Nelson with their
Rep, Sam Rempe.
~ Jason Nelson Nelson Family Farms Formoso, KS
The Nelson’s AI their whole herd to Top $Profit bulls and then clean them up with Leachman sires in a 45 day breeding window. In 2016 they invested in 18 Karat to take their herd to the next level.
Page 24
Backing their AI programs with sons of these elite sires is a sound strategy these operations have employed with the Leachman system.
Brock & Brett Christensen Ruskin, NE
“Our goal is to move our average, put-together herd of generic cows to as high a level of performance as genetically possible as fast and as economically as we can. We are doing it with Leachman Stabilizer genetics. Our first 71 head of steers converted 5.85 to one and reached a payweight of 1,436 pounds. They dressed 66% to produce an average carcass weight of 914 pounds. We are going to continue to use high $Profit Stabilizers in our AI program and we will continue to retain ownership.” ~ Brett Christensen Partner in the Christensen herd
Trinity son from the Christensen herd at LCFY
“The Christensen cattle have above average quality grade and performance, but where they really excel is their overall muscle dimension. The cattle averaged a dressing percentage of 66%, yet only had 10% 4’s and higher. That allowed them to bank an extra $100 per head over market average. Now, with their investment in Leachman 18 Karat – it will be really fun to watch the strides that their program will make.” ~ Steve Scholz Lincoln County Feed Yard North Platte, NE

Blueprint is arguably the most complete Red Stabilizer in the lineup. He achieves this status by combining super type
(chiseled definition, length, thickness, moderate frame, and a great stride) with “no holes” data (top 25% or better for nearly all economically relevant traits) Its hard not to apply the overused phrase “Rancher’s bull” but it sure fits when describing Blueprint. Take advantage of his Top 1% $Profit, Intake and REA and downward trend on mature weight. Blueprint will fit many breeding scenarios including Trinity influenced cows.

Big Gene is the best proven Red Trinity son to date!! He combines power,
performance, eye appeal, and high $Profit in a balanced package. It’s no wonder, as his pedigree stacks some of best genetics in the business. Big Gene’s progeny come easy, grow very rapidly, and are loaded with dimension and style. He has been used heavily in both commercial and seedstock herds since he was a stand out in the 2011 Leachman Spring Sale. His steer calves have topped Superior video sales, and have gone on to earn substantial premiums in the feed yard. Big Gene also now has many progeny, both male and female, in production, and they are proving to be very profitable animals.

The Leachman Stabilizer Breed
The Stabilizer breed is a multi-breed composite developed by Leachman Cattle Company. The breed is based on research done by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) at their Animal Research Service (ARS) at the Meat Animal Research Center (MARC), at Clay Center, Nebraska. The Stabilizer breed is a blend of British and Continental inputs including: Angus, Red Angus, Simmental, Gelbvieh and South Devon. The Breed combines the fleshing ability, marbling, and moderate size of the British breeds with the muscle, milk, and growth of the Continental breeds. As a four breed composite, the Stabilizer retains 75% of the F1 hybrid vigor and thus allows producers to crossbreed with simplicity. The MARC (Meat Animal Research Center) started a project in 1973 called the Germ Plasm Utilization (GPU) project. Their research showed several advantages that come from crossbreeding. Most importantly they showed that hybrid vigor has a large impact on beef cattle productivity. The research demonstrated an 8% improvement in weaning weight when a purebred cow is mated to a bull of a different breed. The research also showed that crossbred cows are far more productive than purebred cows. The benefits came in multiple areas including more milk production, better body condition, faster re-breeding, and a longer productive lifetime.
In total, the crossbred cows weaned 23% more weight than did purebred cows. Historically, crossbreeding requires the use of complicated mating systems to keep the hybrid vigor effect. Scientists designed rotational systems using three breeds. However, such systems were too complicated. Furthermore, they resulted in wide swings in breed composition, and prevented breeders from having a uniform, well adapted herd. As an alternative, the researchers at MARC developed multi-breed composites. Their study confirmed that such composite breeds retain hybrid vigor in proportion to the number of breeds used – using more breeds generates more retention of hybrid vigor. The Stabilizer (Marc II composite), with four breeds, retains 75% of the F1 hybrid vigor. Thus, breeders can breed
composite bulls to composite females and keep most of the available hybrid vigor without the complexity and loss of uniformity associated with crossbreeding.
Since 1988, Leachman has marketed over 18,000 Stabilizer bulls. Customers from across the United States are successfully utilizing Stabilizers to improve their bottom line. The Stabilizer breed is also popular and growing in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and in South America. The Stabilizer has quickly become the most wide-spread composite breed in the world’s temperate regions.

$PROFIT
TM
Profit Explained
Are all small cows really efficient? There seems to be a big disconnect in today’s beef industry. On sale day we want heavy, high quality steers to pay the bills. The rest of the time we want efficient cows to keep our costs as low as possible. Simply selecting for smaller cows with no regard for feed efficiency is not the answer. Likewise, selecting for shear growth with disregard for cost is just as poor of a strategy. The best way to make your cowherd truly efficient, and your calf crop earn more, is to use Leachman $Profit™. This is the only index in the industry that works on both sides of the ledger (production AND cost). Cows that work! Steers that pay! How $Profit works:
What traits are included in $Profit:
Our simulation model then factors in all of the effects on both income and expense to come up with a net profit figure for each bull. $Profit allows you to compare any two bulls and calculate the difference in profit that they are expected to generate in your herd. Let’s compare a $10,000 $Profit bull to $6,000 $Profit bull (the average 2008 born Angus bull). The predicted difference between the bulls is $4,000 or about $40 per calf. $Profit works for us and it will work for you too.
Some traits are not so easily characterized for $Profit. Milk, for example, is a good thing until you get too much. When over +25, milk EPD has a more negative effect on fertility than it has a positive effect on weaning weight. There are a few traits not yet included in $Profit: longevity, structure, and disposition. These traits are important but difficult to express in dollars.
$Profit assumes that the average commercial bull will have 100 progeny over its lifetime. The model assumes that you keep 30% of your heifers as replacements and that you retain ownership on the remainder of the calves through finishing and sell on a grid. We realize that many don’t retain ownership, but doesn’t it make the most sense to select from birth all the way to slaughter? Feedlots have already proven their willingness to pay premiums for superior Leachman sired calves.
$Profit includes nearly every trait that impacts profitability. The effect of most traits on profit is fairly simple to understand. Here is the list of what is included and its effect: Revenue Traits ▪▪ Calving ease = more calves ▪▪ Weaning and yearling EPD = more weight ▪▪ Fertility (days to conception) = more weight and more calves ▪▪ Carcass weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. ▪▪ Marbling = valued based on grid premiums ▪▪ Ribeye area = value as impacts yield grade ▪▪ % Retail Product = more yield is more meat Cost Traits ▪▪ Cow mature size = in general bigger eats more ▪▪ Cow intake = more intake costs more ▪▪ Feedlot feed efficiency = cost of gain
Stars Explained
Star System Explained:
Accuracy: The sire’s level of accuracy is determined by the number of progeny that have been evaluated in the Leachman System. Several progeny recorded, use with confidence (over 90% accurate). Pedigree and individual data only (about 30% accurate). Calving Ease: The predicted calving ease if you use the bull on heifers. The easiest calving bulls in the industry. Use on smaller heifers with minimal assistance needed. Use on larger heifers with some assistance expected. (If no stars are shown, the animal is recommended for use on cows only.)
Good Better Best

Growth: A formula combines WW and YW to predict how much performance the sire will pass on to their progeny. Most growth. Maternal: An estimate of the maternal efficiency of the daughters this sire will produce. It includes cow size, milk, fertility and growth. Keep these heifers! They will make the most profitable females in the business. Feed/Carc: A formula that combines: gain, conversion, carcass weight and carcass merit to predict post weaning performance. Maximum overall value in your feeder calves. Disposition: An observation of the sires disposition. You can walk up to and touch. Average - respects flight zones and handles well, but is not a pet. Across Breed Comparisons
Dare to compare: You cannot afford to make mistakes in your breeding program! Choosing to use sires with incomplete or low value data can unknowingly make your herd less profitable – same work, same cost, poor results - unacceptable. Leachman ABC’s are the most reliable and comprehensive EPD’s in the industry. They are backed by a large (nearly a million), long-standing (over 30 years), multi-breed (over 15 breeds) database. Using this system assures you of making sound breeding decisions with minimal risk of failure.

Mark son impressed everyone at the 2015 Leachman Spring Sale where he was the high selling Angus bull. On Target has royal lineage with a chiseled muscular phenotype. He has great balance on paper too: moderate birth (Top 5%), good growth (117 weaning ratio and 111 yearling ratio), low intake (Top 8%) great carcass (better than 20% IMF and 1% REA), all leading up to his $16,340 (Top 0.1%) $Profit tabulation.

This earns Bartel E7 a top 1% rank on all four Australian Angus dollar indexes. This bull will add frame, but will do so with exceptional thickness and capacity.

With a Angus $Profit value ranking in the top four percentile in the entire Leachman gene pool, it is hard to look past this sire when making your 2017 heifer mating decisions. Shift G026Y has taken full advantage of every important trait that his elite herd sire (Leachman Paradigm G289U) had to offer. We feel that Paradigm may have been one of the best Angus bulls of his time, but never got the chance to become popular due to his early death. This just may be the Paradigm son that we have been waiting for!

Leachman Elite South Devon The South Devon breed has emerged as the dominant British breed alternative to Angus. With extensive experience breeding South Devon cattle that dates back to our own purebred herd, which started in the 80’s in Montana, we are confident that the South Devon breed is more than competitive on $Profit. Much of this is based on their unique combination of heavy muscling with marbling levels comparable to Angus. In addition, substantial evidence now suggests that the breed excels on feed efficiency. Based on our relentless pursuit of high profitability cattle, we are incorporating the best South Devon bulls available into our Stabilizer composite program. These bulls are ideal options to cross on Angus, Sim-Angus, and GelbviehAngus females. Breed Update: Leachman cattle is actively engaged in discussions with a global group of South Devon breeders to implement a coordinated selection system based on the $Profit index.

Shur Loc may be the most attractive bull in the entire South Devon breed! It
comes as no surprise that he is a 2-time Denver Champion. His combination of near Angus phenotype and performance background make him an interesting option for South Devon seedstock breeders, and for nearly any crossbreeding program as he adds heterosis to both British and Continental based herds. On top of hybrid vigor, he will add high growth (Top 3% YW), big ribeye (Top 3% REA), and super feed efficiency (Top 1% Intake and F:G), Best of all, he will add profit (Top 1% $Profit) to any herd! Shur Loc is well-balanced, easy fleshing, heavy muscled and smooth made. This South Devon trait leader for birth weight passes his good looks on to his calves as well.

Our customers have been sorting the top red ones for decades…
Now they do it with $PROFIT! We’ve been breeding Red Angus for forty years. Today, we are working hard to make Red Angus even more successful. This includes measuring feed efficiency on large numbers of progeny to calculate a feed intake EPD and a feed conversion EPD. Leading commercial and Seedstock producers are using $Profit and Hairpin brand bulls to breed even better Red Angus.
Lee Leachman
Improve Your Bottom Line with $Profit! Pete Mathews bought his first Leachman Red Angus in 1989 – 28 years ago. As a long term customer and cooperator, he has an “insider” vantage point on $Profit. “$Profit absolutely works. Lee is definitely on the right track. We scratched our heads on the Pledge bull, but his $Profit numbers were right and the truth came out on his first calves.”

Multigenerational Success Using $Profit, Hairpin Brand Red Angus! Neil Hueftle and his father Karl – Leachman customers since 1980! Hueftle’s started with a purchase of three Leachman Red Angus bulls in 1980. Then, over the course of four years, they purchased over 100 purebred females as the base for their registered herd. In 2015, Hueftle Cattle Company received the “Breeder of the Year Award". We had eleven AI sons of Leachman Pledge born in 2015 – ten made our 2016 sale. They were our Top sire group for performance and sale price. They averaged $15,200. We use $Profit – it’s ten times better than any other index I have on my Red Angus.”
Pictured are two calves by Leachman Pledge, the #1 sire in the breed at $16,331 $Profit!

Pledge may be the most unique Red Angus bull we have raised to date! In his first year, his sons have compiled an amazing sale record. He consistently stamps his progeny with bold good looks. For those of you that have elite Red Angus cows that run sire search’s for perfect matings, consider Pledge to fill in the gaps for profitability, feed efficiency, and REA while strengthening marbling, growth and phenotype. Pledge just might be the best match for your elite Red Angus and SimAngus cows. Due to his untimely death, there is a very limited amount of semen left.

Deniro sires very salable progeny. They are moderate, very easy fleshing and have good muscle expression. He adds or maintains calving ease to any Red Angus breeding strategies, but his biggest asset is that he sires feed efficiency. Leachman Elite Charolais Why Leachman Charolais? Our terminal cross strategies focus on maximizing profit, but we have no tolerance for the lack of selection pressure for the convenience traits. These include our focus on good disposition and reasonable birth weights. Our system also requires upward pressure on marbling and above average growth in our Charolais gene pool to assure you full profit potential. Simply put, Charolais will add 50 pounds to your calf crop – they are the best terminal cross option. Leachman $Profit™ Indexes

Arguably one of the nicest looking bulls in the breed! 49er has been a standout since birth with excellent phenotype, mild-manner and a unique EPD Profile. He’s got a big hip, strong top, big middle, and posts big ratios of 111 for BW, 101 YW, 101 REA, and 126 IMF! This really is no surprise as his pedigree is stacked with breed greats: White Gold, DOC SILVER, RIO BRAVO, Schurrtop E423, GAIN and GRADE, Cigar. Use this unique herd sire prospect to capture low birth, negative Feed to Gain, marbling and very attractive apperance in your 2018 calf crop.

Leachman Professor P128Z
Cattlemen Serving Cattlemen — In All Environments! Here at Leachman’s we have a long standing commitment to building into our gene pool “specific trait” values for cattlemen that must focus on special management and environmental challenges. Whether it is our “at altitude” research work on low PAP sires for our high country ranchers or the development of “profit-driven” heat tolerant genetics for our southern and international breeders, we are working hard to make your operation MORE $Profitable! Leachmans have experience with blending heat tolerant breeds. In 1987, Jim and Lee Leachman worked with King Ranch to design their Santa Cruz cattle (Santa Gertrudis x Gelbvieh/Red Angus). In 1993, Leachman’s started a program in Brazil called the Montana composite that mated over 50,000 Nelore and F1 Nelore x cattle to form a tropically adapted composite program. The Montana program later expanded into Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. In addition, Lee has closely studied a variety of crossbreeding programs in tropical and subtropical environments including Florida, South Africa, and Australia. 25 years of experience have taught us the following: • Optimal crossbreeding south of I-10 requires the use of Bos Indicus. • Hybrids and composites allow the optimal blending of traits. • In most southern US regions, the optimal level of Bos Indicus is between 3/16 and 3/8 Bos Indicus. • Bos Indicus programs usually suffer from sub-optimal levels of marbling.
• All Bos Indicus cross programs should incorporate Angus and/or Red Angus.

Destiny’s sire, Hombre is a proven efficient sire that was evaluated by Southern Cattle Company in their Brangus feed efficiency testing. The dam, Ruby X103 ranks in the lowest 4% of all Angus dams for feed intake. Destiny is not a single trait wonder and he has an optimal balance of calving ease, growth, carcass, and maternal traits. This Ultrablack bull delivers 3/16 Bos Indicus in an eye appealing package.

Success Breeds Success! The Scholz operation is the story of a family succeeding in the cattle business. Steve, a self-made man, is a hands on operator. He likes data and he wants to be financially successful. His first experience with Leachman came from a heifer purchase in 1993. He’s been studying our program ever since. Steve & Tricia Scholz & family Lincoln County Feedyard, North Platte, NE
Steve earned a master’s degree in nutrition and then put it to work consulting and later managing large feedlots. Eight years ago, he and his wife purchased Lincoln County Feed Yards, just 15 miles north of North Platte, NE. Together, they run the business. Steve is a skilled custom feeder of “calf feds.” He is a stickler for bunk and ration management. His yard is noted for phenomenal animal health and low mortality losses on calves.
When you consider feeding options, we want to help! Kevin Unger explains, “Working for Lincoln County and Leachman is the culmination of my career. I love breeding cattle and feeding cattle. I’ve seen, first hand, the value of genetics. Now I can help ranchers realize their dreams of building better cattle and profiting from their efforts. Steve and Lee are two of the sharpest guys in the business. Together, we can make tremendous progress.” ~ Kevin Unger Oberlin, Kansas 785-470-1131

Our Cattle Work Great in High Country! Leachman Cattle of Colorado is working with the Nottingham Ranch to breed a herd of Stabilizers that specialize in high altitude adaptability. All sires are PAP tested. The first bull calves out of the two year old heifers were PAP tested along with their dams. From this data, Colorado State University has developed a PAP EPD for Leachman Cattle of Colorado. Leachman Cattle of Colorado is committed to helping ranchers reduce the losses from brisket disease. Changing a trait in a population requires the use of EPDs – thus our PAP EPD. From our own experience, it is clear to us that sires with PAP EPD’s over +3 have tremendous death loss on their calves. Sires with +1 or less on PAP EPD are typically considered sires that are “good at altitude.” This unique list of low PAP sires can dramatically reduce calf losses from brisket disease in your herd.
Key points regarding PAP and PAP EPDs: • We have taken 2,432 PAP scores (all by Dr. Tim Holt). • PAP is 30% heritable. • The PAP EPDs reported were calculated by Colorado State University. • Selecting bulls using the PAP EPD is FAR more accurate than simply using the PAP scores. • Herds that have significant brisket disease should use our high accuracy, negative PAP EPD sires.

Jim Tomlinson – a Colorado native is the Nottingham ranch manager. Jim is already seeing an advantage in the survival rates of the Stabilizer calves from birth to weaning. He explains, “We AI’d our yearlings to two of Leachman’s best low birth weight and low PAP bulls – Trinity and Yosemite. They calved easily and we didn’t lose a single calf to brisket from birth to weaning. Our very lofty goal is to wean 94% from pregnant cows at this elevation!”
