Fort Townsend trail run is Sept. 1 The 14th Fort Townsend 4-Mile Trail Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1. Registration for the event is 7:30-8:30 a.m. in the Friends’ Barn at Fort Townsend State Park, off Highway 20 in Port Townsend. Brian Taylor, a ranger at Fort Flagler State Park, began the event 14 years ago. Taylor, a runner, knew that the trails at Fort Townsend were perfect for a competitive trail run. Friends of Fort Townsend maintain the 6.5 miles of park trails and continue to sponsor the event. Members of the Port Townsend Running Club handle course layout and statistics for runners finishing the race.

Trails used for the event are part of the park trail system, which was laid out and prepared by Larry Stevens, a ranger at Fort Townsend State Park in the 1970s. Bluff Trail, one of the last trails runners traverse, was originally part of the trail leading from the 19thcentury fort to what served as the fort’s garbage dump. Old Fort Townsend Lane, a long, straight trail in the middle of the fourmile run, was originally used as a road between Fort Townsend and the fort’s garden at what is now Jefferson County International Airport.

The run’s midpoint is the junction of the lane and Rhododendron Trail, which takes runners to the western boundary of the park and a wetland area with large stands of Pacific rhododendrons and the park’s largest western red cedar. The event is open to the public. A Discover Pass or oneday pass is required to park at the event. Registration fee is $15 for adults, $10 for children 16 and younger. Awards are presented for first place overall, male and female; and the first three finishers in eight age categories. For more information, call 385-1792 or 385-2998.

YMCA: Keeping kids safe, active By Krystle Arnold of the Leader

With school starting next week, kids may need somewhere safe and fun to go after classes while their parents are still at work. The Jefferson County YMCA could have the answer for families, offering numerous after-school programs, including activities on early release days, for ages 5 through 99. “Although if you were 101 we probably wouldn’t turn you away,” Jenni Benedict quipped. Benedict is the director for the YMCA’s licensed childcare facility that is available for children ages 5 to 12. To become a licensed childcare provider, the YMCA at Mountain View Commons in Port Townsend had to go through three months of preparation and inspections, and each employee receives annual training. “It’s all about keeping the kids safe,” Benedict said. When school begins, the YMCA has busses available to transport children from each of the Port Townsend schools to the after-school programs. For children attending schools in Quilcene and Chimacum, the YMCA goes to them. “We bring the Y programs to the people,” said Erica Delma, program executive. The after-school programs begin with a healthy snack and then playing outside “so the kids can get 29: Homestead Welding • October 5: Introduction to Home Food Preservation • October 5: Introduction to Home Hard Cider Making • October 6: Wildlife Tracking • October 6: Farmstead Cheesemaking • October 7: After School & Homeschool Wilderness Classes • October 12: Wood Stove Food Dehydrators • October 13: Capturing the Essence of Nature • October 13: Earthen Ovens • October 20: Farm to Yarn • October 26: Rigid Heddle Loom Weaving • November 2: Fermenting the Harvest • November 3: Willow Harvest Baskets • November 10: Everything Sourdough • November 16: Sausage Making. The YMCA is also open on days there is no school and during school vacations so parents don’t have to scramble for sitters. Financial help for YMCA programs is available through the Department of Social and Health Services for families who may not be able to afford the licensed childcare made available. If the families do not qualify for DSHS support, a YMCA scholarship may be available instead. “We make sure program cost is not a barrier for attendance,” Delma said. There are also new programs for adults, including Exercise and Thrive and Nurtured Heart. The after-school programs vary in their teaching methods; the YMCA tries to be all-inclusive by engaging many different types of learners, such as children who learn kinetically and those who learn best by listening, among others, according to Benedict. “We want to help kids find out what they are naturally a genius at,” she said. “The activities we bring in make the kids feel successful.”
