Trinkets of tradition

Ornaments keep family stories alive Each year, antique ornaments and heirloom knickknacks are exhumed from their paper wrapping, marking the beginning of yet another holiday season. Moreover, these items serve to remind us of the family connections and traditions that span present and future. In the following, Leader staff share a few sentiments about their favorite holiday ornaments and the memories each symbolizes.

Make your list, check it twice; visiting here sure is nice

Forget about Santa Claus. He already has his list of who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. You need to make a list of what to see and do in Port Townsend and Jefferson County during a holiday season trip. This is just the place to start. ❆ Plan to be impressed, simply amazed at the quality of locally produced items, from fine art to sensational cider, and the shops with their custom imports and choices not common in retail chain stores.

❆ Be hungry, for we have dozens of great restaurants and cafes to satisfy your appetite. ❆ Bring your reusable cloth shopping bags. The City of Port Townsend, in 2012, instituted a plastic bag ban, which, for retail shops, means small paper bags are free to customers, but large paper bags cost a nickel. ❆ Port Townsend has a lot to offer, but so do stores in Quilcene, Port Ludlow, Port Hadlock and Chimacum. They have great places to eat, too. ❆ Come for the day or stay the night. Our calendar of events lists entertainment, craft fairs, bazaars, and tons of other familyfriendly things to do and see. Put us on your holiday list! Poet Billy Collins penned “The Lanyard” to capture the vast gulf between a puny gift he made for his mother at a summer camp, which he expected to balance out all she had done for him. It reads, in part: “She nursed me in many a sick room, Lifted spoons of medicine to my lips, Laid cold face-cloths on my forehead And then led me out into the airy light And taught me to walk and swim, And I, in turn, presented her with a lanyard. Here are thousands of meals, she said, And here is clothing and a good education. And here is your lanyard, I replied, Which I made with a little help from a counselor.”

“This was my Christmas gift that year,” Marilou Sullivan said of the gift from her middle child in 1987. She was a single mother when Maegan brought this one home. It’s a thin piece of wood in the shape of a heart, painted red, with a color photograph of Maegan standing in front of a curtain with a Christmas stocking and a poinsettia. It’s got red and white ribbon looped as a hanger. Christmas ornaments are a big deal with Marilou, just as they were with her mother, Dorothy Riecke. The tree goes up, the lights go on, and then dozens of ornaments are put into place. “Every year

the girls could put their own ornaments on the tree, and every year to this day Maegan puts this ornament on the tree in a very prominent visual spot, usually about a third down from the top, right in the middle, facing the entrance to the living room, so all can see.” More than once, a sister has switched the ornament’s location, or put their own childhood ornament in front of it. “As soon as Maegan (now Maegan Alvarez) comes in the house, she checks out the tree and if it’s been moved, she’s on it. That’s part of Christmas.” – Patrick Sullivan

NORA PORTER’S FINAL GIFTS Nora Porter was a oneof-a-kind woman. In Port Townsend, many things are named after her – a park and a gathering place at Fort Worden State Park, to name a few. I knew I was in for a ride when I called her to set up an interview in 2011 and she said, “You’ve been assigned to write my obit.” “No,” I replied, “I’ve been assigned to tell the story of your life.” Nora was like that. You’d better be sharp, or she could cut you. A few weeks after the interview, I went to her condo to visit her and her Christmas ornaments were out. It was July or August. She was organizing her life, giving things away. And she was inviting friends to take an ornament from her collection as a memory of 4 ❆ 2013 Holiday Gift Guide

her. When she invited me to take an ornament, I thought only briefly of crying. Then I studied the ornaments and picked a pretty handmade angel playing a harp. I keep it near my desk now and think of Nora often, wondering sometimes when I read the letters to the editor, “What would Nora think of that.” – Allison Arthur

RECYCLED ANGEL When a playful tinselhaired angel came home with my artistic daughter, Rachel, two decades ago, the ornament became a “Never Give Away.” It’s so unique. The angel’s head is made of melted crayon and if you look

carefully, you can see she has a face. Her hair is leftover gold and silver tinsel and her body is made of old craft paper and magazine paper. She also has an assortment of mismatched plastic beads on her feet. Talk about making something out of nothing. She appears to be leaping for joy. – Allison Arthur

made them. They were created out of either beer cans or aluminum cans. Each 4-inch, flowershaped ornament has been painted and cut at least 60 times to create tiny strands, which were then curled into place. Some have a small ball ornament in the center. They are intricate and beautiful, but difficult to get on and off a Christmas tree. Technically, however, I guess they are heirlooms so … they go on the tree. And after a bit of spiked eggnog, my husband usually doesn’t notice being pricked by them. – Allison Arthur

MY MOTHER AND THE PEACOCK

Way, way back, my mother was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse on the windy treeless plains of Nebraska. The farm children that came to her school were desperately poor. They often didn’t have shoes, KICKING THE CAN and walked or rode horses from far distances to attend class. If I ever need a DNA As Christmas approached, sample of any member of my mother began talking about my family, I’ll just pull out family traditions. None of the our aluminumchildren at the school had ever can Christmas ornaments and had a Christmas tree. So, my mother began plotting to give look for hair them a little party, cider, corn and blood muffins and most importantly, a samples. real Christmas tree. These My mother saved every dime ornaments from her tiny salary and, just were made in before Christmas, traveled to the ’60s and the city to make her purchases. ’70s. I have no idea who She chose a small tree, some

clip-on candleholders, and shiny wrapping paper to make garland. In a fancy department store, she found a display of handblown, colored glass ornaments from Germany, all glittering with sparkly snow. Each one was a work of art! My mother looked at them eagerly, turning each one and exclaiming happily. The salesman directed her eye a little higher, and there, in a separate nook, was a peacock. The body was a deep turquoise blue, the arch of the neck perfect and elegant. The eye seemed to look at you from every angle. The peacock wore a delicate golden crown, and the wing feathers were colored silver, green, aqua, pink and blue. The tail was a soft spray of sparkly white, and the silver legs ended in a little clip, to hold the bird on the branch. It was about 4 beautiful inches, not counting the tail, and totally amazing. My mother counted her money. She had just enough to buy the peacock, but she wouldn’t be able to get anything else. She thought of the tree she imagined … with just the one beautiful ornament … she held the peacock for a long time, and then sadly returned it to the nook. My mother selected several of the smaller ornaments: a house, a train, a stocking, a pinecone, balls with crushed-in silver centers that reflected the light. The salesman helped her pack her treasures in

a strong box, and off she went, thinking of her delightful surprise for the children. On the day she came in early to decorate her school for Christmas, my mother was amazed to discover the beautiful peacock nestled into the box with the other ornaments. The salesman had included it secretly, with a note: “Your tree needs this peacock.” Later, she went back to the store to thank the salesman, but no one there remembered him, or knew where he might have gone. The school Christmas was every bit as magical as my mother had hoped. She knew the children would never forget the beautiful tree. Those precious school decorations have been part of our tradition ever since. Several have been lost to old age and time, but the peacock is still with us. This story of Christmas kindness from a stranger gets retold every year, and has spawned its own magic. The person who “finds” the peacock when getting out the decorations has good luck for the upcoming year. – Marian Roh

’Tis the season to celebrate Fun, easy and family-friendly holiday party ideas

The holiday season has arrived. It is a time for both family and friends to share the enjoyment of laughter and holiday cheer. Whether it is a hot buttered rum, a holiday movie marathon, a warm fire or a snowy day that brings everyone together, the end of the year is a great time to gather. With the help of some of our readers, the Leader has put together a few holiday party themes to help inspire holiday get-togethers this year.

simple way to prepare your home for the holiday season. Luckily for us, Washington is a great state to host a wreathmaking party because we live in an area with a surplus of cedar trees. UGLY SWEATER

The holidays just aren’t the holidays without a classic ugly sweater party. In 2011, ABC News looked into the craze behind this trendy holiday party theme and concluded its rise in popularity may be attributed to the concept that people spend the entire year worrying about what they look like. By the end of the year, people just want to relax and let loose. Hosting an ugly sweater party doesn’t take much, which makes this a good last-minute theme. The premise is simple: Drag out that wooly, macramé sweater lurking in your closet Not sure if the sweater looks good? Students share holiday wishes Third-graders wish for themselves, for the world

The holidays are a time of reflection and forethought, a time to wish one another good tidings and hope for happiness and prosperity in the coming year. For many children, the holidays also mean gifts: giving and receiving. The Leader asked third-grade students from Grant Street Elementary to consider what they wish for this year for themselves– a new toy, a family trip, a puppy perhaps – and to also write about what they wish for the world. Here are a few of their answers:

❆❆❆ My wish for this time of year is for it to snow. I want it to snow because my brother and I can have snowball fights. My dad and I can build a snowman. Also, I can make snow angels. Playing in the snow would be so much fun. My wish for the world is for everyone to have a home. I want people to have a home because they can eat and drink stuff and they can have a warm place in the winter. Also, they can have a safe place to sleep. – Eva

A wish for everyone to have a home, by Eva 8 ❆ 2013 Holiday Gift Guide

I do want people to give food, houses and water to the people who don’t have it. – Conner

❆❆❆ I wish I had two dogs because I like dogs and so I could have dog friends, so I could play outside and so I could have somebody to sleep with. I wish the world had no war so no one would get hurt and so no one would die and it would be sad if somebody died. – Eve

A wish for snow, by Eva

❆❆❆ I wish I got to see Santa on Christmas at my house because I just want to see what he looks like. I hope he is really nice and he is the best to look after. I will peek and I think I will see him. I think he will see me. I hope he is not scary at all. I wish there is no weapons because I do not want anyone to get hurt really bad that they have to go to the hospital. – Maddy

❆❆❆

I want to see my first shooting star because I will get to wish on it. That is my dream. My second wish is for snow this Christmas because I have 2 sleds and I live on a hill so I’ll get to go sledding. And iceskating and it would be so fun. My third wish is that everybody is happy for the holidays. If not everybody will be mad and angry at you. And it would be the worst holidays ever. If we all get along then everybody will be happy. And it would be the best holidays ever. – Khiannon

❆❆❆ I wish that I could see my brother because he is in the Army and four months ago his base got attacked. He didn’t get hurt but I really want to see him. I wish I could see my greatgreat-grandma. She died one week before I was born. I wish for the world that there was no war because people die. I wish people didn’t cut down trees because they make air, houses, and they are resources for us.

❆❆❆ I wish that I could see an elephant because I haven’t seen one before and I’ve seen them on TV and they’re super cool because of their trunks. Why I like trunks is that they can do so many things with a nose like eat and drink. I hope that it snows this year because it didn’t snow last year and I really want to sled and have a snowball fight because I love having fights like water gun fights except hard and soft balls of water that’s really cold. I love to eat snow, but not the yellow snow. I wish that there are no wars because people die and destroy other cities, then thousands of innocent people die, which brings more lives in danger. My other wish for the world is that people get food all around the world because people are starving and we need to give them food because we have plenty of food and seeds to share. – Hunter See WISHES, Page 12 ▼ The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader

My wish for the world is that people will stop polluting because if everyone pollutes in the ocean a lot of fish will die and people will not be able to swim in it. I like to swim at Fort Worden sometimes. When I go there I find trash and that makes me feel kind of bad. – Adeline

I wish for world peace and respect of the world. Also, there not to be Earth Day one day a year, but every day. And less trees cut down because if too many trees are cut down we could not breathe. And it’s ruining homes for animals. Companies are polluting the air. I would like that to stop. Less use of cars would also stop pollution. Less campfires too because it is breaking the shield that is covering the Earth. I wish these things would happen. – Aiden

❆❆❆ My wish for this Christmas is that we can have a big dinner and lots of presents. Here are some reasons why: 1) I’ll want a big dinner because I’ll probably be very hungry. 2) I’ll want a lot of presents because I like a lot of presents. I also wish for joy. – Lorenzo

❆❆❆ I wish to see my family for this holiday season because I hardly ever get to see them and I love my family. I wish for it to snow because I have two sleds and I love to make snowmen. I wish for people with completely destroyed houses to have new houses so they will be happy. I wish for a bike so I can ride it with my friends. And I wish for my family to get what they want for Christmas, so they will be happy. – Mika

I wish that the hungry kids and grownups in Africa to not be hungry anymore. I do not want kids to die in Africa to starve and die because they die by not eating. I do not want the people in Africa to die. I wish there was not trash on the ground cause then the earth will look like a dump everywhere on the ground.

Finally, I wish there wasn’t any more war in the world because then our world will be a peaceful world that we live in then if we stop all of the fighting and wars in the world. Then we will live in a relaxing planet. – Tyler

Reminiscing over recipes

The holidays are a time full of warmth and the pleasure of gathering with family and friends to enjoy good food, good drink and fellowship. Oftentimes, certain recipes and dishes are reserved especially for this season because of the traditions, people and places each represents. Here, Leader staff share a few of our favorite holiday eats and the origins of the dish.

Garlic Clam Dip

Green Bean Casserole

In my family, Christmas Eve is all about appetizers. Knowing that a hearty meal awaits us on Christmas Day, we spend the 24 hours beforehand grazing from platters of summer sausage and artisan cheeses, crisp vegetables and trays of sweets. But the holidays would not be complete without a bag of Lay’s potato chips and a bowl of homemade clam dip. The recipe is three generations strong and includes enough garlic to make your eyes water. One mouthful and you’ll be hooked. ( Just encourage your other guests to do the same, so no one has to worry about breath mints.) – Megan Claflin

Some recipes are learned during childhood and carried forward with us as we start our own families. Others are picked up along the way and shared with the ones we love. From little sister to big sister comes this “best ever” recipe for a holiday classic. “My little sister Shelley Brewer Marengo lives in New Orleans and she married into an Italian family. This recipe comes from her husband’s grandmother.” – Catherine Brewer

Ingredients 16 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 pint cottage cheese 4 6 1/2-ounce cans minced clams (include juice) 6-8 garlic cloves, minced salt and pepper Add all ingredients into a large ceramic bowl and mix until creamy. Let dip sit in refrigerator overnight. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve with potato chips.

Spiced, candied pears will make a beautiful addition to your holiday table with their warm color and rich aroma.

Anthony was homesick, and so I asked him for a holiday comfort-food recipe from his childhood: He gave us this recipe. I don’t remember Anthony’s last name, and now that I’m indoctrinated toward organic,

(about 1/4 of a cup) probably wouldn’t do this very 1 15-ounce can of pears often. But the girls remember Pour juice from the can of pears into the recipe and ask me to make a saucepan and add candies. Bring it in memory of that special to a boil and stir until candies melt. dinner. – Allison Arthur Ingredients 1 box of cinnamon candies

Put pears in a small bowl and pour the hot cinnamon sauce over the pears. Chill for several hours before serving.

Ingredients 1/2 cup olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 5 cloves of garlic, chopped 2 cans (1 marinated) of artichoke hearts, chopped 3 cans of French-style green beans 1 1/2 cups of Italian bread crumbs 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-11-inch, 2-quart casserole dish. Spray frying pan with nonstick spray. Add onion and garlic and cook in olive oil until clear. Add green beans, artichokes, breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese. Mix well and cook in pan for 15 minutes. Pour into casserole dish. Top with breadcrumbs and small pieces of butter. Sprinkle cheese on top. Bake until top is golden brown.

Anthony’s Christmas Pears Anthony was a musician my daughters and I invited to a holiday dinner one year while we were living on Vashon Island and my husband was working overseas.
