Steve Bergstrom of Bergstrom’s Sewing Machine Center in Port Hadlock is surrounded by sewing machines. Photo by Allison Arthur

Bergstrom’s Sewing Machine Center What’s your background with sewing machines? “I went to school in Seattle at the Singer Sewing Machine Co. in 1967. They were looking for people to service and sell machines. They said if you qualify, we’ll teach you. So they gave a test to see if you were mechanically inclined, and I was.” How did you start in Jefferson County? “I grew up in Port Townsend, and initially I had my business in my dad’s department store, Bergstrom’s Department Store. Eventually, I decided I wanted to have a shop closer to where I live on Marrowstone Island. And the parking in Port Townsend got bad, so I moved out to Port Hadlock, 841 Nesses Corner Road. I’ve been here at least 10 years.” Where do your customers come from? “I have customers from Jefferson, Kitsap, Clallam and as far away as from Seattle and Tacoma.” What do you specialize in? “I specialize in repairing classic sewing machines, the ones made out of metal. The newer ones are made out of plastic. Vintage is my speciality. I sell machines and I service machines.” Why do you like vintage machines? “For one thing, they sew better. They don’t have everything built in. They do better on heavy fabric. The classic ones have style to them. I have modern machines, too, but I’m staying away from the computer ones.”

What do you shop for locally? “Generally, I shop for things at Don’s Pharmacy, and I’ve been with the [Food] Coop for I don’t know how long. A long time. I still like going downtown. I go to help my brother at his shop downtown, Bergstrom’s Classic Cars. Since I’m closed on Saturday and Sunday, I help out at his shop.”

. LA J EF

How are local customers in Jefferson County important to you? “There are customers who came into my shop in Port Townsend when they were in their 40s and now they are 80-something. My oldest customers is 105. She wanted to buy a new sewing machine. I worked on her old one.”

Greg Brotherton’s Discovery Bay Village Store carries local goods from Short’s grass-fed beef to Spring Rain Farm eggs and Finn River Cidery ciders. Photo by Nicholas Johnson

Bay Village Store How did you get started? When we re-opened the Quilcene Village Store, we wanted to create an avenue for the great local products and produce. When we were approached about a new Local 101 complex in Discovery Bay, we were intrigued. We immediately thought that a little horizontal integration would help us leverage more local products, and serve a new community in Discovery Bay. So we offered to move in and open the Discovery Bay Village Store with the same mission in mind. What’s new? As we meet our neighbors and travelers, we’ve been refining our stock to make sure that we are serving our customers as well as our mission. We are planning to change the flow by opening up the next alcove and moving the ice cream dipping station. What makes Discovery Bay Village Store local? We are building relationships with our neighbors and if they want to see something in our store, we’ll try to get it on the shelves. We use the same supply model as the Quilcene Village Store, so we already had relationships with a lot of local providers. We carry and serve Sunrise Coffee and Olympic Mountain Ice Cream, feature grass fed beef from Short’s, pork and eggs from Moonlight Farm, and eggs from Spring Rain Farm. We feature produce from Serendipity, Midori, Dharma Ridge, Ananda Hills and Red Dog farms. We feature alcohol from Port Townsend Brewery, Eaglemount Winery, Finn River Cidery, Alpenfire Cidery, Wind Rose Winery and Olympic Cellars. The list goes on and on.

About the business: Dan Gessner and Sara Lopez bought Crossroads Music from George Rezendes and Lindsay Hamilton, who had opened it in 1996. They offer repairs, rentals and lessons six days a week in two onsite practice rooms, and with its windows filled with concert posters and a constant stream of customers and visitors, it truly does serve as a crossroads for the local musical community. What do you sell that’s local? “We carry so much local stuff – minstrel banjos made by Eric Prust from Gardiner; Dick Henshaw’s ukuleles; John Morton’s steel guitars; instruments made or refurbished by locals Jay Gordon, James Curtis and Michael Colbert; and reeds for oboes and bassoons made by David and Anne Krabill of Emerald Reeds in PT. From Poulsbo come David Shelley’s ukuleles and classical guitars, and Ron Davison’s cigar-box guitars.” F F ER S O What’s new with your business? JE “We’re seeing a lot of new faces. ... We get a lot of local support. That’s why we’ve been able to stay in business.” They also have a small store at Fort Worden during five of Centrum’s summer festivals, including the recent ukulele festival. “Ukuleles are huge right now.” How do you feel about your local customers? “We have some really loyal and great customers. We meet all kinds of people from all walks of life. Right here in PT, there are so many types of musicians and types of music played. If someone has a special item they like to use, we carry it for them. We try to make it easy for people to play music.” - p o n

Tim Roth and Mariko Willenhag own Hillbottom Pie, 215 Tyler St. Photo by Robin Dudley

Hillbottom Pie

About the business: Tim Roth and Mariko Willenhag opened Hillbottom Pie in April 2014 at 215 Tyler St. in Port Townsend, in the same place where they had the Tyler Street Coffeehouse from 1999 to 2007. In the interim, Roth drove semitrucks cross-country, visiting all 48 states. “I’ve been a dinner chef most of my life, and wanted to get back to that as opposed to making pastry,” said Roth. They chose to serve lunch and dinner to avoid having to get up at 4 a.m., and chose the menu of soups, salads, pizza and pie because they wanted to keep it simple, something that Roth could do on his own. “I’ve worked with bread all my life, so pizza made sense.” What ingredients do you shop for locally? “Local lettuces and greens mostly, F F ER S O JE fabulous tomatoes, broccoli and soup-making ingredients.” Do you cater to locals? “Absolutely. Those are the people who support us during the wintertime. We do have a loyal following. They remember Tim’s soups. Familiar faces walk through the door, and I even remember some of the names. It feels good.” (Mariko) Where did you learn to make bread? “Originally from my mom,” said Roth, who also worked with Andre LeRest at the Village Bakery in Chimacum around 1997-1998. What do you shop for locally? “I pretty much shop locally. I never leave town. I hate going to shopping malls and I avoid it at all costs. If I can’t get it here, I tend to do without,” said Roth. Center Valley Animal Rescue’s director/founder/caregiver, Sara Penhallegon, enjoys hanging out with iguanas in their own special place at the care facility, where many animals are prepared for adoption to local homes. Photo by Viviann Kuehl

Center Valley Animal Rescue About the business: Director/founder/caretaker Sara Penhallegon started Center Valley Animal Rescue to provide rehabilitation and care to animals as an alternative to euthanasia. An eight-member board oversees the operation, which this year placed 129 domestic animals in new homes, and released 70 rehabilitated wild animals. What do you do? “We work with local people, shelters and veterinary hospitals to provide an alternative to euthanasia, and work to get animals ready for adoption. CVAR [Center Valley Animal Rescue] commits to rehabilitating the animals we accept. We do what needs to be done to get animals healthy and ready to adopt, or in the case of wild animals, to release. I am a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for mammals as well as a licensed veterinary technician, with 19 years of experience in the veterinary field.” Who is on your team? Are they local? “We have 30-some regular volunteers, and now we even have crews that come in every week, a Monday crew, a Tuesday crew and so on. We are very grateful to the local community. We can always use volunteers, both for care and construction projects, and donations.”

Lane Lobato enjoys working in rural Quilcene, fixing engines of all kinds. Photo by Viviann Kuehl

Lane’s Automotive and Marine About the business: Lane and Cassandra Lobato operate Lane’s Automotive and Marine in Quilcene. Working on engines has been a lifelong passion for Lane Lobato, evident in his enthusiasm for the mechanical. “When I get to rebuild, or do anything, on these engines, and hear them roar, it’s like bringing another life into the world,” said Lobato reverently. What services do you offer? “We’re here for all your auto needs. We do regular service, tune-ups, boat maintenance, bottom paint, trailer service and fabrication, and we fix flat tires. We do it all. We like to serve the local community, and give a good job for a fair price in a timely manner.”

What do you like about Quilcene? “Quilcene felt more like home than any place we’d been,” added Cassandra Lobato. “It’s a little bit of heaven. Everybody helps everybody else out, and we will, too,” said Lane Lobato.

I N S U LA .

How did you become local? “We grew up in Colorado. When we left home, we moved to the Oregon coast. I was in a bad accident there, and we went to Texas, where I was building and repairing Cessnas. I got tired of working on the line, and we talked about Washington. We went to Tacoma, but decided we wanted to be rural. We were just driving around, and we saw the town and the shop. It was just perfect. There was a little ‘For rent’ sign in the window, and when I went to talk to Sandy [Oen], I told him I didn’t have much money, and he understood. If it weren’t for Sandy, we wouldn’t be here. He said, ‘Keep plugging away, kid,’ and I’m going to keep plugging away. I want to keep up the tradition of repair and helping the community.”

Members and guests enjoying the second-Wednesday Artist of the Month reception at the Port Ludlow Artists’ League Gallery. Photo by Gary Settle

Port Ludlow Artists’ League What is the Port Ludlow Artists’ League? A small group of Port Ludlow residents began getting together in 2002 to share their interest in art. Now, the league has more than 100 members. Most live in Port Ludlow, but some are from other parts of the peninsula. We have painters, photographers, jewelers, potters, woodworkers, as well as nonartists who simply enjoy being part of an artistic community. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month to enjoy an artist demonstration of some kind; guests are welcome. Where do your members display/sell their artwork? About 25 percent of our members choose to exhibit their artwork at any given time. We have a small cooperative, nocommission gallery next to Sound Community Bank that is open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. We also have an Artist of the Month exhibit in the bank, individual quarterly exhibits at several merchant locations and a themed group exhibit at the Inn at Port Ludlow. Our exhibits in the gallery and inn change every two months.

Our scholarship fund is for graduates of Chimacum High School who are continuing their education in the fine or performing arts. We welcome people from throughout Jefferson County and beyond to join us for a glass of wine, some tasty treats and a chance to win an original work of art.

Propolis Brewing is owned and operated by partners Robert Horner and Piper Corbett, who specialize in seasonal herbal ales that are handcrafted with local, organic and wild-crafted ingredients. Submitted photo

Propolis Brewing Company How did you get started? “Established in June 2012, our company was cleared to begin production in March 2013. We started with a one-barrel brew system (31 gallons), producing roughly 12 cases of 750-milliliter champagne bottles per barrel. We currently produce four to seven barrels of two ales each month, 24 unique ales annually,” said Horner. What inspires you? “We are influenced by farmhouse ales of Belgium and France, and by Old World brewing traditions that utilized herbs and spices for medicinal and health value. We are committed to maintaining a healthy community, promoting the use of organic local ingredients, no excuses.” What makes Propolis local? “We provide product to local shops, including the Pourhouse, Port Townsend [Food] Co-op, Aldrich’s, the Wine Seller, Getables, Chimacum Farmstand and Nash’s Farmstand. We work at several farmers markets, including PT, Ballard, West Seattle, Tacoma, Everett and Seattle’s University District.”

What do you shop for locally? “We’re both passionate about delicious local artisanal foods. Most of our food comes from local farmers and producers – Moonlight Farm eggs and pork, Short’s beef, Dalla Notte croissants, River Run Farms greens and anything from Midori Farms. There is never a need to visit a big box store,” explained Horner.

Puffin Shoe Repair employee John Shortess (left) shows off tools of the trade and examples of work along with current owner Roger Reichersamer and Colleen Swantner. Swantner plans to buy the business later this year. Photo by Allison Arthur

Puffin Shoe Repair What is the history of your business? Puffin Shoe Repair was started by Larry Dennison in 1975. He came from Oklahoma, fresh from a six-week apprenticeship in shoe repair. Where did the name come from? The name came from a friend who was a writer who handed Larry a page from a bird book; picturing a puffin. Since puffins do live in the area, it seemed perfect. Larry’s brother, Rick, moved to town and joined him in the shop in 1977. They made sandals, sold shoes and did repairs. They later moved to the Petals Flowers location and sold the shop to Roger Reichersamer in 1985. So Larry passed the shoe to Roger and then what? Roger came from a lineage of shoe manufacture and repair. His father was a cobbler in Germany and moved the family to Wisconsin. Roger moved to Port Townsend and ran Puffin Shoe Repair with the help of his brother, Jack. Your staff is local, then? Yes. In 2003 Roger hired Colleen Swantner as a seamstress. Colleen started managing the shop, and helped move and renovate the shop into its current location behind Sweet Laurette’s. The staff now includes the latest apprentice in shoe repair, John Shortess. He does most of the soles and heels; Colleen does the sewing of shoe uppers, jackets, backpacks, belts, etc. Colleen plans to purchase the shop by the end of the year.

Roger Short has known for years that the soil in Chimacum Valley is good for grass and good for his beef cattle. He’s been expanding his Magical Soil business lately. The soil is a locally sourced product that Short says improves the nutrients of vegetables. Joe, the family farm dog, accompanies Short on his farm rounds. Photo by Allison Arthur

Short’s Family Farm What does Short’s Family Farm have? Roger Short: “We have USDA grass-fed beef, magical soil and hay. The farm dates back to 1945. Norris and Laura Short raised nine children, and we all graduated from Chimacum High School and went on to get advanced degrees. I purchased 88 cows in 1970. We now have 100 Angus beef cows on 400 acres. I’m the overall manager. My wife, Sandy, is the bookkeeper. Son Kevin handles beef sales, and son Bill works with the Magical Soil business. So it’s a local family business. Longtime, local family business.” Tell us about what is magical about your Magical Soil. “It’s the microbes. We start out with muck soil from the Chimacum Valley. We take yard waste from around Jefferson County. We also pick up horse manure from around the county. We blend it all. Magical Soil is full of microbial life and nutrients, so chemicals won’t be necessary. It’s best used in raised beds.” And you’re starting to sell it in bags, right? “Yes. We just started this year. Our Magic Soil makes nutrientrich veggies. We did test plots this year with peas, and the peas planted in the Magic Soil came out on top in a blind taste-test.”

What do you shop for locally? “We buy everything we can locally. Some mechanical parts, we can’t get locally. We like to patronize the people who carry our beef, like Ajax Café, Chimacum Cafe, Farm’s Reach Café, and Key City Fish in Port Townsend is distributing our beef, too.”

. LA J EF

Where can people get it? “At the farm stand, at our farm on Center Valley Road, and we’re hoping to set up some retail outlets, too.”
