PARTY PIECE: There’s nothing cheesy about Sarah Moloney’s graphic design talents. The 20-year-old Casey resident last week won a bronze award at the prestigious Southern Cross Package Design Awards for her innovative entry – a sleek tin to store and serve cheese. ‘‘The base acts as a platter and the top is for chopping. It’s perfect for parties,’’ Ms Moloney said. In keeping with the party theme, each container includes a different flirtatious line. The Chisholm Institute of TAFE Diploma of Graphic Design graduate said winning the award was a thrill.

Every dollar counts Money | Dimity Barber CASEY families are bracing for a tough Christmas. Last month’s interest rate rise has already stripped about $50 from the monthly budget of families with a typical $300,000 loan. And the pain is set to worsen, with economists predicting a Cup Day rise of 0.25 per cent or more as the Leader went to press.

Families to struggle with rate rises After a 49-year interest rate low this year experts are warning further increases will continue into next year. Cranbourne Information and Support Services manager Leanne Petrides said even small interest rate rises would have a savage im-

pact in over-mortgaged Casey. ‘‘The biggest issue in Casey at the moment is housing stress,’’ Ms Petrides said. ‘‘Young families are on increasingly tight budgets and every cent is accounted for. ‘‘Many families are already over-

committed and struggling. One or two rate rises will have a hugely detrimental impact on those already stretched to the limit.’’ Ms Petrides said the agency had already experienced a 25 per cent increase in demand during the past 12 months.

‘‘Normal working class and even middle class families have been forced to come to us for help,’’ she said. ‘‘Throw an interest rate rise into the mix and who knows how bad it will get.’’ 䊳 Battlers living in fear, p9 Are you worried about further interest rate rises?
