City to celebrate Hunter Ice Festival

N

ILES, Mich. — Downtown Niles will transform into a winter wonderland during the city’s 12th annual Hunter Ice Festival Jan. 22 through 24. Attendees can view dozens of ice sculptures while taking advantage of a variety of family-friendly activities, including the popular “ice fights” (a timed ice sculpting competition), chili crawl and sleigh rides. The free event celebrates the legacy of the Hunter family, which ran a successful ice harvesting business using frozen water from nearby Barron Lake. Hunter Ice Cream, made from a recipe inspired by the family’s original frozen treat, will also be sold throughout the festival. Several of the country’s best ice carvers will demonstrate their craft and talk about their unique trade throughout the weekend. Check out the Hunter Ice Festival page on Facebook for an up-to-date list of activities. Red hot wine-and-craft trend warms southwest Michigan B

By M.D. Cunningham

ERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. — Drinking and making stuff is nothing new. Artists, and their friends, have long sought Bacchanalian inspiration. Rather than ragtag Bohemians assembling in cafes around absinthe, these days it’s becoming increasingly common for wineries to organize events to attract oenophiles with a casual interest in art. Workshops often focus on crafts like painting or ceramics — and, of course, wine is a staple accompaniment to the medium of choice. “They are growing in popularity like crazy,” said Melanie Owen who along with her cousin Lauren Kniebes own Lazy Ballerina Winery in St. Joseph, Michigan. Lazy Ballerina, which opened last spring, is a new kid on the block in the bevy of wineries in southwestern Michigan, and perhaps due to this newness regularly houses wine-and-craft events open to the public and private events for team building. At any given moment Julie Nitz is traveling with up to 50 easels in the back of her vehicle. Nitz who now teaches wine-and-craft classes in addition to running her own graphic design and marketing firm, JLN Studio, agrees that the trend is spreading like wildfire, particularly in the colder Midwest months where there is less to do. Originally Nitz started teaching classes for her friends, but the savvy business owner couldn’t ignore the demand. Her next three classes are sold out. “I don’t expect everyone in there to be a Picasso,” Nitz said while later admitting that she has had students who’ve never painted that she’s confused her own work with. “What I tell people is we all paint differently… I encourage them to try what feels fun and enjoy themselves. I think the reason these have taken off so well is that people want to get out and be with friends.” Nitz observed that it’s also great for wineries. “No one really needs an excuse to drink wine,” she quipped.

Nitz estimates that she’s led 75 classes in the past year. Despite the combination of drinking and painting, she said that there’ve only been a few instances where she’s had to get on her hands and knees to scrub out acrylic paint, but she does encourage attendees to dress for the occasion. “You will be painting,” she often admonishes. Nitz’s classes, which are structured yet laid back and typically last a few hours, are so popular that she even has some “art groupies” that follow her from class to class. Like any creative effort perhaps an evolution of winter activities are in store for Southwest Michigan wine lovers.

Dablon Winery in Baroda, Michigan, has been looking at hosting craft-and-wine events, as well, in addition to offering other activities that pair well with dropping temperatures. “It’s important to us to get people to the winery and tasting wine, whether there’s snow on the ground or it’s 80 degrees outside,” said Laura Gelder, tasting room and wine club manager. “We try to appeal to as many types of people as possible.” Dablon currently offers a book club night, a yoga brunch and is preparing snow-shoe events, as well as movie nights. The area abounds with something for everyone, and the first glass of wine just may be the tip of the iceberg.

What’s happening in the wine world? A New Year’s wine column usually focuses on the best of the previous year or predictions about the coming year. One scribe’s musings have minimal impact but hopefully can be educational. I’ve been there and done that with Grape Sense. Instead of random ruminations let’s look at some facts. The Gallo company, yes Ernest and Julio’s namesake behemoth, conducts extensive research annually on wine drinkers and their behaviors. It makes for interesting reading. The big wine news can be summarized as younger people are drinking more and more wine. Dry rose is still going through explosive growth. Wine drinkers are gathering recommendations from a wider number of resources than ever before. The Gallo report said: “The top 3 factors that encourage wine drinkers to try a new wine include a friend or family recommendation (95 percent), bartender or sommelier recommendation (86 percent), and store employee recommendation (82 percent).” There are age differences in how a consumer selects wine and perhaps they’re not all that surprising. Our younger friends, or millennials, are four times more likely to buy a wine based solely on the label. Baby Boomers, on the other hand, are looking for information. Boomers want to know where the wine comes from and love shelf talkers — those little notes by each wine describing the wine’s taste. The average wine drinker sticks to what they know, mostly something I’ve argued against for years. But the average wine buyer sticks to about 3-4 brands they’ve

tried and liked. The average price point for those folks is under $10 a bottle. How do wine buyers see themselves? This was one of the more interesting categories. Those surveyed where given several

about wine with someone else. Close behind was the fear of a waiter asking the consumer to taste before pouring and being judged by your wine choice. Grape Sense has been focusing Rose’ for a number of years now. Young people no longer have to be sold. Millennials are almost twice more likely to buy dry pink than boomers. Rose’ tends to be seasonal though it holds up to many winter foods. Rose season starts in April, often when the new French vintage arrives, and peaks in late summer. Rose’ sales drop dramatically before Halloween. There are more and more options today for convenience. Decent boxed wine is showing up at liquor stores and groceries. Consumers believe that boxed wine is “very convenient” while more than half of all consumers surveyed said they would have no issue drinking boxed wine as their ‘go to” wine source. So what does all of it mean. It means that we end where we started with consumer trends and desires. Drink what you like and don’t worry about other opinions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about wine and don’t let the so-called experts or snobs intimidate you. The final pitch is, as always, try something new. Try a new wine, a new label, or a new country and you might get a reward bigger than expected.

choices. The top descriptor was Wine Adventurer at 35 percent, wine traditionalist at 20 percent while 25 percent described themselves as a wine novice. In smaller numbers, consumers selected brand loyalist with wine imposter and wine snob coming in at three percent each. For years wine has become friendlier. If you like it, it’s a good wine. Don’t be intimidated by wine terms or other wine enthusiasts. So what are winos afraid of, besides an Howard W. Hewitt, Crawfordsville, empty bottle? What’s brewing? South Bend beer festival returns to Century Center

S

Photos by Matthew Provoast

OUTH BEND, Ind. — The South Bend Century Center is once again hosting its annual South Bend BrewFest event in downtown South Bend. Beer connoisseurs will once again have the chance to taste a wide variety of regionally-made craft brews Saturday, Jan. 23. Leaders promise the event will again feature the finest specialty and craft beers from South Bend and the surrounding areas. This is the fifth year Century Center has hosted the beer tasting event and it is expected to sell out as it did in years past. BrewFest will offer three options for event tickets: general admission, VIP tickets and designated driver tickets, all of which are available online through the Downtown South Bend Inc. online store. Pre-sale ticket prices are as follows: $45 for general admission, $75 for VIP, and $15 for designated driver tickets. General admission and designated driver tickets will be available at the door, but it’s likely that tickets will be sold out at that time. BrewFest will open its doors at 1 p.m. for those with general admission tickets. The VIP experience will begin an hour prior to general admission at noon. The event will run until 4 p.m. This year, attendees can enjoy not only the beer sampling, but also live entertainment by DJ Chuck Fry, memorabilia shopping, concessions and a silent auction. VIP participants will be granted early admission to the event and exclusive access to a VIP lounge where a “Kegs and Eggs”-themed gourmet food pairing will take place. Beyond that, VIP’ers will have the opportunity to sample a limited selection of brews and experience a meet-and-greet session with the brewers. BrewFest will once again partner with South Bend Public Transportation Corporation (Transpo) to offer free rides to event attendees on fixed routes. Routes 1, 3A, 3B, 5, 7, 9 and 13 will all provide service to Century Center for free when participants show their wristband or ticket confirmation. The system map and individual route maps are available online at http://sbtranspo.com/routes-and-fares/. The collaboration between Century Center and Transpo comes as an effort to promote safety and responsibility amongst BrewFest participants. And for participants outside of Transpo routes, Uber will also be running a special promotion for BrewFest! BrewFest has continually proven itself to be a wildly popular event as it sold out quickly in advance last year. It provides an opportunity to engage in the craft brew trend as well as an entertaining event to support local businesses in the Michiana and surrounding area. For additional information, visit www.southbendbrewfest.com or contact Century Center at 574.235.9711. To purchase pre-sale tickets, visit https://downtownsouthbend.com/dtsb-store/ site/16526.
