The Accidentals set to close out Living Room Series
B
ENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The final performance of The Mendel Center Hanson Theatre Living Room Series will be by rising stars in the indie music scene when The Accidentals take the stage at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12. The Accidentals are a young, musical genre-bending trio that has been dominating the festival scene. Named as one of Billboard Magazine’s top seven breakout bands of South by Southwest (SXSW) 2015, Winner of Summerfest, Milwaukee’s Emerging Artist Series — 2015, WYCE Album of the Year 2015 and MyNorth Magazine’s Red Hot Best Michigan Band for the third year in a row, this is the band to watch. Band members Savannah Buist and Katie Larson met in 2011 at their public high school. Katie, then 15, was a freshman cello player, “playing up” in the Philharmonic Orchestra. Sixteen-year-old Savannah was concert master violinist. They volunteered for a class assignment that threw them together for their first rehearsal and The Accidentals were born. From 2012 to 2014, The Accidentals recorded three original albums, were guest artists on 15 others, scored two films, and landed song placements in commercials, documentaries, and music compilations while playing more than 700 live shows. Then they graduated high school. After graduation from world-renowned Interlochen Arts Academy, The Accidentals added multi-instrumentalist-singer-songwriter Michael Dause as their touring/ studio drummer and opened for musical greats such as Andrew Bird, Sixto Rodriguez (Sugar Man), Brandi Carlile, Dar Williams, SHEL, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Ben Solee, Seth Glier, Rusted Root, The Wailers, Keller Williams, Arlo Guthrie and more. They scored original pieces for a 72-piece orchestra, an opera-dance project with Son Lux (Glassnote Records), and a smaller 30-piece string ensemble while touring the US extensively. In 2015 alone, the band played more than 200 shows at some of the most prestigious venues and largest festivals in the U.S., including The Fillmore, The Vogue Theater, Frederik Meijer Garden, Summerfest, Electric Forest, Summer Camp Festival, Blissfest, Wheatland and Earthworks Harvest Gathering. The Accidentals have been described by Yahoo Voices as “stunning, an unforgettable experience watching these two girls play a sea of instruments (12, to be exact), moving effortlessly from one to the other, while
entertaining the masses with their wit, haunting harmonies, and catchy melodies, they are truly unforgettable.” Songs from their current album, Bittersweet, have been placed in commercials, indie films, and scored out for several orchestras. They are currently recording with Marshall Crenshaw and Stewart Lerman. They are slated to be Official Showcase Artists at SXSW this March in Austin, Texas. Tickets for The Accidentals are $15, $10 for Mendel Center Mainstage Series members, seniors and students. Tickets are available 24/7 at www. TheMendelCenter.com, through The Mendel Center Box Office at (269) 927-1221 weekdays 2 to 6 p.m., and one hour before show time. Ticket prices listed do not include fees. The program is subject to change. The Hanson Living Room Series is a live music experience in the intimate setting of the 250-seat Hanson Theatre. The venue is designed for maximum viewing and listening pleasure, and provides audiences with the opportunity to connect more closely with the performers and the performances. Before and during each show, a cash bar will be available with a variety of craft beers and wines from regional vineyards from among which audience members can select and enjoy inside the theatre with nonspill Mendel Center cups. The 2015-2016 Hanson Theatre Living Room Series is sponsored by the Southwestern Michigan Tourist

ost writers have likely given you their lists of accomplishments and goals from the year past, as well as their thoughts and desires on the new one in which we find ourselves. However, as you'll soon find out, I rarely operate on the expected schedule often determined to be the best path in life. I spent a fair portion of 2015 in front of this computer, talking, writing and exploring the vast world of music and culture. The opportunities afforded to me in the past year went beyond the expectations I have given myself. I was fortunate enough to connect with a varied list of talented and interesting people; struggling musicians and their popular national counterparts, proprietors of venues and cultural centers, and makers of all things food, art and life-affirming. I have been able to spend significant portions of my time awash in the parts of life I love the most. To quote South Bend musician Dena Woods, in 2015 I found “that which is

Justin Flagel soul-filling.” My path was not always one that pointed obviously toward professionally delving into my interests. I look back to my years following high school, when friends and peers moved on and away to pursue dreams and create careers. I stayed behind in rural Michigan, unsure which road to travel, unsure how my personal interests translated into the future set before me. I toiled in jobs of every variety, from factory work to tending bar, from retail to janitorial, from nearly every role available in an eatery to each task one

can accomplish out of a toolbox. As I saw my friends creating their lives, I concerned myself with how I would appear when reunited with them. I worried often that I'd missed an important page in life's instruction manual. Nothing feels more natural to me than writing. It is a task I have occupied myself with as long as I can recall, one that satisfied my boredom and carried me across the

struggles of life. While I worked to figure out where my life should lead, I turned to the emerging world of blogging or, as we referred to it then, “writing.” I made friends and gained community here and across the globe. I found like-minds and encouragement that instilled confidence and led me to exploration and adventure. I found my way to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and into

the highlands of Scotland. I picked up a camera and started making movies. I grabbed a pencil and started creating stories. I convinced musicians and artists to sit and talk with me. I continued my writing and found an audience willing to read it. We have a motto at Anywhere The Needle Drops: “Life is an adventure, life is a story.” The spirit of that motto is that there is no correct or safe path in life. Certainly, more secure paths exist and there are people who can tell you about them. I am not one of them, though I do advise you listen to their counsel. I also advise you to then bend those rules and, occasionally, even break a few. As you look into the future, into the new year, or simply into next week, remember that it's important to pursue that which speaks most to you. Remember that the adventure of life is a short one that ends in the same place for everyone. Remember that, as Shepherd Book once told the audience of Firefly,
“the journey is the worthier part.” Remember that, if you find yourself uncomfortable, you are probably doing something right. It will not be easy, but anything worth doing rarely is. It will not be the sure and secure path in life, but to quote Julia Cameron “safety is an expensive illusion.” In 2016 and any year that follows, pursue that which speaks most to you. If a guy in rural Michigan who loves music and movies can find a way to speak to his favorite artists, write and talk about the culture he loves, and have an audience that reads and listens to him, then that is proof enough that you can achieve what you set out to do. Justin Flagel is the founder of the web magazine and podcast Anywhere the Needle Drops, where he and others showcase their interest in music, pop culture, creativity and life. Frigid 5k Winter race returns to Niles
N
By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert@leaderpub.com
ILES, Mich. — Winter has arrived just in time for Niles’ annual cold-weather run — the Frigid 5K. “The views on this run are really nice, especially right along the [St. Joseph] River,” said organizer Chris Pawielski, who runs Inertia Cycleworks in downtown Niles. “There is a lot to look at when there is ice and snow on the trees. Running down Bond Street is a real picturesque run.” This year’s race is scheduled to take place Saturday, Jan. 16. Race-day registration is from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at Inertia Cycleworks, 211 E. Main St. The race runs off at 9 a.m. from the boat launch in Riverfront Park just south of the Broadway Bridge. Pawielski said the opening of the new Main Street Bridge allows the course to return to its traditional route. “It makes things a lot easier for everybody because we had to do a weird route last year that made it more complicated,” he said. “From my perspective it is great.” From the starting line, runners will travel south on
Bond Street along the river before heading east on Fort and then back north on the bike path back toward the Main Street Bridge. The finish line will be near the amphitheater in Riverfront Park. A post race after-party featuring awards and food will take place at Massimo’s Pizza. “A lot of people like that we feed them after the race,” he said. “We have chili and snacks. We try to push the amenities.”

Mental health issues for the Elderly are too often overlooked and affect a larger percentage of our Senior population than many realize. Studies have shown that the top five mental health issues common among older citizens are:
Women, Children or Men
• Depression: Depression is very common among the elderly, and those aged sixty five years old or older have double the depression rate of younger individuals. The loss of friends and loved ones, together with the increasing physical limitations of aging can cause depression and can sometimes be severe.

The race has grown each year, beginning seven years ago with approximately 100 runners. Pawielski said they already have more than 340 people registered with less than two weeks until the race. “If we have a good day we tend to get a lot of people that show up on race day and register,” he said. “My goal this year was to hit 400. We’ve already exceeded what we had last year, so I feel like we are successful.” Pawielski attributes growth of the race to heavy promotion on social media and a lack of other activities offered at this time of the year. “It’s grown more than we thought it would, but we put a lot of work into it to keep it going,” he said. Awards will be handed out to the first three finishers in each age group. A cash prize will be given to the male and female winners. For more information or to register, visit Niles Frigid 5K on Facebook or go to the website nilesf5k.com. People can also email Pawielski at chris@inertiacycleworks.com. Packet pick-up will be open at Intertia Cycleworks from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 15 and starting at 7 a.m. on race day.
DETERMINATION
EDUCATION
• Alzheimer’s Disease : Alzheimer’s disease is a larger problem with aging men then it is with woman. When men develop this condition it normally occurs early, progresses faster, and can become very troublesome for an individual and his family. Men are usually medicated and sedated at higher rates because of increased violence and antisocial behavior when this condition reaches its final stages. • Dementia – Dementia is a very real concern for the elderly. As they age, their memory can start to decline, and dementia can occur. This can range from very mild to very severe, and can make it impossible for the senior to live independently and stay safe. • Anxiety – Anxiety is one of the biggest mental health concerns for the elderly. As seniors age they may become more anxious over the future. This can lead to more stress and nervousness. Problems with anxiety often affect woman more than men. A common treatment may be mild sedatives or tranquilizers, but these can be habit forming and should be used with caution. • Suicide – Suicide has become more prevalent in the elderly population. By the age of eighty five, suicidal thoughts and rates for the elderly jump significantly. It may be caused partly by physical problems and limitations, but loneliness may also contribute to self destructive thoughts and behaviors that can lead to suicide. If you believe that you or a loved one may be suffering from mental health issues, make an appointment with a primary care physician to begin a journey back to total health.

They still have it REO Speedwagon wows Four Winds crowd By SCOTT NOVAK scott.novak@leaderpub.com
N
EW BUFFALO, Mich. — REO Speedwagon rolled into the new year in style at the Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds in New Buffalo Saturday night. From the opening strains of “Don’t Let Him Go” to the final chords of “Ridin’ the Storm Out,” REO had the crowd rocking and rolling the entire night. A near capacity crowd spent much of the night on its feet and singing along to hits like “Time for Me to Fly,” "Roll with the Changes,” “Keep on Loving You” and “Keep Pushing.” The highlight of the night came when the group, which formed in the 1970s in Champaign, Illinois,
performed “Golden Country,” a song that showcases what REO Speedwagon was all about as an “arena rock” monster of the late 1970s and into the 1980s. Before performing the classic, lead singer Kevin Cronin remembered original guitarist Gary Richrath, who passed away in September 2015. During its prime, REO consisted of Cronin, Neal Doughty on keyboards, Richrath, Alan Gratzer on drums and Greg Philbin on bass. Philbin was replaced by Bruce Hall on base as REO stormed into the 1980s and remains with the band. Doughty is the only remaining original member. The current line-up includes Dave Amato on guitar and Bryan Hitt on drums.
