ENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Smokey Joe’s Café, the longest running musical revue in Broadway history, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a stop on its national tour at the Lake Michigan College Mendel Center Mainstage on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. This show, billed as “the hottest joint in town,” is
directed by Tony Award nominee Chet Walker and features the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame group The Coasters. Smokey Joe’s Café is a superb tribute to legendary songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller who ushered in the era of rock ‘n roll by penning numerous songs that rose on the Billboard charts in the late 1950s and
early 1960s. Stylistically, their songs ranged from humorous high-energy tunes to more somber ballads – all grounded in rhythm and blues. As lyricists, the team became known for their storytelling ability and wit, as well as their depictions of teenage life during the era. Smokey Joe’s Café made its Broadway debut on March 2, 1995, at the Virginia Theatre. During the show’s milestone run of four years and eleven months, the production became Broadway’s longest running musical revue,

playing 2,036 performances. Smokey Joe’s Café features 38 songs made famous by rock ‘n’ roll pioneers like The Drifters and Elvis Presley. Throughout his career, Presley recorded more than 20 Leiber and Stoller hits. Show songs include “On Broadway,” “Hound Dog,” “Fools Fall in Love,” “Spanish Harlem,” and the show stopping “Jailhouse Rock.” The musical’s soundtrack recording won a Grammy Award in 1996. As an added bonus, this national tour features beloved rock ‘n’ roll ensemble The Coasters, who also recorded more than 20 Leiber and Stoller songs from “Dance with Me,” “Searchin,” “Poison Ivy,” “Yakety Yak,” “Love Potion #9,” and the ever popular
“Charley Brown.” They were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 — fittingly alongside Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Tony Award nominee Chet Walker directs and choreographs this production. Walker received a 2013 Tony Award nomination for the revival of “Pippin,” directed by Diane Paulus and still winning nightly ovations on Broadway. He won the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, and the Astaire Award for his choreography of the Steven Schwartz musical. Walker, a longtime associate of Bob Fosse, conceived the choreography for “Fosse,” winner of the 1999 Tony Award for Best Musical. The full Smokey Joe’s Café cast of 14 singers and

Swingin’ in the Bend 'Sp'easy swing' comes to Michiana Oct. 25
By Nick Shelton
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — Channeling the 1920s, a group of swing dance enthusiasts are inviting the public to join them in an event that will surely be the bee’s knees. On Saturday, Oct. 25, The Music Village of South Bend, Dancehipology, and the Notre Dame Swing Club are sponsoring the inaugural Sp’easy Swing, an allday swing dance workshop and speakeasy party. The swing dance workshop, which kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Dancehipology and the
Emporium, will consist of multiple classes throughout the day. According to The Music Village’s website, participants will learn to cut a rug with regionally-acclaimed instructors from Indianapolis, Danny Beyrer and Mandy Spencer Hogan, along with local instructors, Anna McCoy and Martin Colianni. “It should be a lot of fun,” said Brad Ferrari, an event organizer and local Jitterbug. “We’ll have a beginner level and an intermediate/advanced level, and people of all ages and skill levels are welcome to come out. “(It’s for) people who love jazz music and who
want to learn how to swing dance.” Workshop participants will have the opportunity to attend several classes, including Intro to Lindy, Advanced Lindy, Solo Jazz, This Ain’t Your High School Slow Dance and several others. “Swing dancing is kind of a broad category,” Ferrari said. “The quintessential swing dance is the Lindy Hop, but there will also be Charleston classes in there, too.” In addition to the Saturday workshops, there will also be a late-night speakeasy swing dance from 8 p.m. to midnight. “The dance on Saturday
night will be 1920s themed so we’ll get dressed up in vintage clothes and that will be kind of cool,” Ferrari said. Ferrari is excited about the opportunity to put together an event like this. “I’ve been dancing for a long time and trying to develop a swing dancing scene here in South Bend. I have been part of that movement for three or four years,” he said. Attendees of the Sp’easy Swing can choose from the Packaged Deal ($13 for all classes) or A La Carte Classes ($5 each). Just like speakeasies of old, participants will need a password to get into the party. The password will be emailed to you once you register for the event. iles, Mich. — Owen Deutsch, an award-winning nature photographer whose work has appeared in National Geographic, will be exhibiting his work entitled “Birds of the Americas” at Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve and Tabula Rasa Gallery (819 First St., Baroda) Oct. 24 to Dec. 7. An opening reception for both galleries will be held Oct. 26 from noon to 2 p.m. at Tabula Rasa and from 3 to 5 p.m. at Fernwood. Deutsch will be at both receptions, which are free and open to the public. Recently, Deutsch’s image of a bald eagle chasing a great blue heron was named a North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) 2011 Top 10 Showcase Winner, and was cited in a USA Today March 2014 article for the excitement it caused in birding circles. A prolific bird photographer, he has photographed hundreds of rare species and is dedicated to their preservation. All of his commissions will be donated to the American Bird Conservancy to support bird preservation. Deutsch took some time out of his day to talk about his passion for photography.
of food and product. After a few years I went to work for a fashion photographer, Victor Skrebneski, for four years with my ultimate plan to open my own studio, which I did after four years. I had a successful career in photography, but I also realized that (real estate) is something else I like to do. Since I was in business for myself I had time to work around doing other real estate development. I probably bought a building a year, rehabbed it on my own and continued building a portfolio of buildings. What do you enjoy about bird photography? Doing bird photography is a big challenge because they don’t sit still. It takes a lot of patience and skill. It gave me the opportunity to travel all over the world because there are beautiful birds all over the world — not just the Midwest. Tropical birds to me are generally more colorful and exciting than the birds in the Midwest. So I’ve traveled a lot to Central and South America… all over. My heart starts pounding when I see these gorgeous creatures and I get them in the camera. It is so beautiful. As a fashion photographer I worked with a lot of beautiful women, shooting beautiful clothes and that was fun and exciting. It is more challenging to shoot something that doesn’t sit still. It is something that got into my blood very much.
Where did you grow up? I grew up in Chicago and have lived here all my life, although I Is there a bird you would like have been traveling quite a bit over to take a picture of that you the last 15 years around the world. haven’t? That isn’t me. I just enjoy their beauty and they happen to be outside in nature and it is a lot of fun to be out and capturing those pictures and sharing that joy with other people. What is the photo you are most proud of? There are so many, but about a year ago a friend told me about a place where Eagles were nesting and asked if I’d be interested in seeing it. I went over and we were out on a boat for 3 to 4 hours. All of a sudden a great blue heron came flying in the direction of the nesting eagles. I couldn’t believe it. He is just about to fly in and land on a branch near the eagle’s nest and the eagle said ‘get out of here guy’ and took off to get rid of him. I got a once in a lifetime picture of the eagle chasing the blue heron. You talk about heart pounding out of your body. There was probably 4 or 5 seconds where I was shooting this and almost doing somersaults to keep him in the frame. I say I got lucky because I got both birds. People thought it was photoshopped. It wasn’t. It won an award. Do you have advice for taking good nature photos? Patience is probably the biggest thing. You also need a good camera, but it doesn’t need to be extraordinarily good. Establish some proper camera techniques and know your equipment. Also, have the patience and take the time to wait for a good shot.

Building a veggie bowl An easy meal for vegetarians
L
ast weekend I took a girls trip to Portland, Oregon to celebrate my birthday. The ladies and I chose Portland for several reasons, mainly because it is viewed as sort of a foodie Mecca. Restaurants everywhere offer farm-totable fare, food trucks line every vacant lot and seemingly even the dive bars have notable menus. In the vegetarian community, Portland is held highly as the leader in veg friendly dining. For years I’ve been reading about all the great veg friendly restaurants out there, so I left Chicago prepared to eat and bike my way through this western frontier, and
that’s just what we did. As I always do when traveling, I took note of many things about Portland food and culture. One thing I saw on practically every menu out there was a whole section devoted to, “bowls.” These typically consisted of a grain, a green, a protein and a sauce. Often they had a theme like the Jamaican Jerk Tofu Bowl or the Chili Bowl. Vegan bowls are everywhere in Portland and it made me really happy. It’s such an efficient, simple, and delicious way to get everything you need in a meal in one dish. I love this way of eating because it

broccoli, a plant protein such as blackened tofu, spiced black beans, refried beans, or tempeh and a sauce. The sky is really the limit with the pairings. I have tons of recipe options in my article archive here on leaderpublications.com/offthewater, on katshotcakes.com, ehow.com, and in The New Chicago Diner Cookbook. I will share some basic ideas below, but please visit kathotcakes.com or pick up a copy of the cookbook for even more actual recipes. Happy bowling!
Grains: For wild rice follow the directions on the package using homemade vegetable stock instead of water. Millet can be cooked in basically the same fashion as quinoa.
Greens: I have many recipes for greens available on my website (katshotcakes. com) as well as in Off the Water’s online article archive and in The New Chicago Diner Cookbook. Combine in any variety of ways, smother with sauce, and serve.
Basic Quinoa Recipe Yield: 4 servings 1 cup quinoa, uncooked 1 ½ cups vegetable stock

1. Thoroughly rinse the quinoa in a wire mesh strainer. 2. In a small sauce pan, bring the vegetable stock and quinoa to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer about 12-15 minutes until the liquid is absorbed and the quinoa is plump. Remove from heat and serve.

liberates you from the concept of strict recipes and adhering to a plan. Veggie bowls are a low maintenance way to throw a satisfying meal together since you just trade out the grains, greens, and proteins depending on what you have. If you follow my column or have The New Chicago Diner Cookbook, you know this concept of culinary flexibility is one that I believe to be crucial to healthy, plant based eating. The basic veggie bowl should either have steamed quinoa, wild rice, millet or other grain, a green vegetable such as kale, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, or

Sauces: The sauce is what really ties the veggie bowl together. You can mix it up and either smother or serve on the side. There are countless options for sauces, but here are some of my favorites. • Cashew Nacho Sauce recipe on katshotcakes.com • Sage and Mushroom Gravy — katshotcakes. com Jamaican Jerk — eHow. com, The New Chicago Diner Cookbook • Spicy Marinara — Off the Water archive and katshotcakes.com.
Savory Tempeh Patty Yield: 2 6 ounce servings 1 package (about 12 ounces) tempeh ¼ cup vegan Worcestershire sauce A splash of liquid smoke A dash of dry mustard powder A dash of chili powder About ½ tsp Jane’s seasoning salt 1 tsp grapeseed oil for cooking 1. Cut tempeh in half or into strips and place in a shallow pan or baking dish. 2. Whisk all remaining ingredients together and pour over tempeh. 3. Let marinate in the sauce for at least 30 mins but as long as overnight. 4. Place in a heated and oiled skillet and cook until golden brown.

Protein: I saw a lot more beans, coconut bacon, tofu, and soy curls in Portland than I did tempeh or seitan. Soy curls are a soy based meat substitute that have the same chewy consistency as seitan. I tried them at one spot, but they aren’t my favorite. Try a savory tempeh patty, my black crockpot beans which I shared a couple weeks ago, baked beans (recipe on ehow.com), or refried beans (online article archive) and you’ll enjoy any of these pairings. The savory tempeh patty is also a perfect sandwich starter. I actually originally came up with it for a tempeh reuben.

Celebrating Years!
ix years ago Grape Sense was born for the love of wine and love of column writing. Today’s column is the anniversary. It seemed unlikely in October 2008 that the column would reach more than 20 newspapers. Just as unlikely was adding a regional magazine and contributing stories to a national online wine magazine. It seemed crazy to imagine wine travel to Paso Robles and Mendocino, CA., to learn more about wine. That was followed by travel to France not once but three times in 2012 to learn about Languedoc, Bordeaux, and Chablis wines. So forgive the
personal reflection. But there have been some clear trends learned through six years of wine writing which are helpful to the target audience. Grape Sense No. 1 (this is No. 155) started with this: “I hope to offer a little wine education to those who may drink some wine and would like to take a step up without paying the big bucks. I will write about types of wine and specific wines.” That focus hasn’t varied much through the years though the price point sneaks a bit upwards on occasion. But what has the journey yielded to benefit value wine consumers? People want to learn more about wine. Statistics galore from varied sources document Americans are drinking more wine. Wine consumers want to know more about the wine basics than ever before. Not all great U.S. wine has to come from California,
More than just food...It’s an experience
Washington, or Oregon. And this remains one of the biggest misconceptions in the wine industry. New York’s Finger Lakes, Virginia, and Northern Michigan deserve a spot on your table. Indiana has some great wineries as do other Midwestern states. Unfortunately, the wine industry boom has led to winery growth but many enter the business for the wrong reasons. A winery is a small, agriculture business. Running a winery is farming, chemistry, labor, marketing, and sales. Finding success isn’t easy for most new wineries in the Hoosier state or any non-traditional wine producing region. There are great wineries in Indiana and those spots have been detailed in Grape Sense on many occasions. By the way, there is no better time for a drive to Southern Indiana wineries than the fall.
Many wine drinkers are still afraid to try new things. When visiting a wine shop, instead of the market or local liquor store, pick up a bottle of Argentinian Malbec or Carmenere from Chile. Wine novices should try the great Rhone grapes of France grown there or in California’s central coastal region. Those Rhone grapes are Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. Those grapes together and alone make great red wines. Maybe the most important advice is to have fun with wine. Get a group of friends together and blind taste a cabernet, merlot, and syrah and see who can correctly identify each grape. The price point doesn’t matter. Or have a big party and have each couple bring two bottles of wine. One bottle of each is open and tasted blind. At the end of the tasting everyone votes for the best wine of the event and the winner takes home that extra
