South Bend Civic Theatre presents 'House of Frightenstein'
Story and photos by NICK SHELTON
OUTH BEND, Ind. — It’s alive! It’s alive! Michiana residents have something to be afraid of in South Bend. Starting on Saturday, Oct. 11, folks who are fearless enough to enter can visit the South Bend Civic Theatre (SBCT) as they present the ‘House of Frightenstein,’ an electrifying haunted house extravaganza. The idea to create the haunted house came about when the SBCT moved its offices to a new building, leaving their spooky ex-office building vacant. The building, which is actually scheduled to be razed by the city, sets the perfect scene for a haunted house. “It’s a creepy old house,” said Tracie Lukasiewicz, SBCT Audience Development Manager. “We asked (the city) to hold off on demolition so we could do this.” In March, Lukasiewicz and another co-worker attended a haunted house convention in St. Louis where they participated in workshops and learned how to build haunted houses. “We knew it was going to be a big project, and it has been a big project, but we’re excited,” Lukasiewicz said. Since their return, more than 100 volunteers from the community have racked up more than 885 two-hour shifts to design the rooms, plan the story and construct the haunted house. Unlike a traditional haunted house, the SBCT’s version naturally weaves in a theatrical element. “It’s a haunted house, but it’s more than that,” Lukasiewicz said. “It’s more of a theatrical, immersive experience that goes through the mind and memories of Victor Frankenstein.” Lukasiewicz said the haunted house goes along with the SBCT’s stage production of “Frankenstein” which was written by a local playwright. “It’s tied into what we’re doing on stage, but it’s different because we are being a little more loose with the original story,” Lukasiewicz said.. Josh Napierkowski, another SBCT employee, discussed the dynamic of the haunted house. “What sets this apart from a typical haunted house is that you’re led through by an actor who tells you the story as it is acted out within the walls of the home. You’re put right in the middle of the story,” he said. Event goers can expect to be scared witless as they are taken through the cobweb covered, blood soaked, brain-in-jar filled haunted house. Each guided tour lasts about 10 minutes. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. The haunted house is located at 211 W. Madison, directly behind the SBCT. For more informtation including haunted house dates and to purchase tickets, visit http:// sbcthauntedhouse.weebly.com/

Heritage Museum hosts program about the Founding Fathers’ attitudes toward Native Americans
S
T. JOSEPH, Mich. — The Heritage Museum will present a program entitled, “Patriots and Indians: How the Founding Fathers Engaged Native Americans” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Early attitudes toward Native Americans shaped relations and policies which endure to this day and within the region of southwest Michigan. How did George Washington deal with American Indian tribes during his military days and during his time as president? What did Thomas Jefferson think about the diverse groups of tribes across the nation? Dr. Jeff Dennis of Southwestern Michigan College will answer these questions and many more. Visitors should

note that this topic is a change from the originally scheduled program. Dennis is a native of southwest Michigan and a full-time instructor at Southwestern Michigan College. He received his doctorate from the University of Notre Dame with a dissertation examining the Founding Fathers’ interactions with American Indian tribes. His dissertation is in the process of being published by the University of South
Carolina Press with a release date scheduled for spring 2015. Admission to the program is $5 and free for students and members of the Heritage Museum. The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center is located at 601 Main Street in St. Joseph, Michigan. Our mission is to engage the public in a vibrant organization that promotes historical preservation, education, and research that
relates to Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and the surrounding region. Our exhibits through 2014 are “Southwest Michigan in the Civil War,” “In Style: 50 Years of the Heritage Museum’s Fashion Collections,” and “Benton Harbor’s Boat Building Industry.” Group tours, school, and scout programs are available. Elkhart in Bloom
Annual event returns to northwest Indiana By D. E. MESSICK

LKHART COUNTY — Summer may be over, but Elkhart County isn’t ready to give up on the scenery just yet. “We started three years ago in downtown Elkhart,” Sonya Nash, coordinator for the Elkhart County Visitor’s Center, said. She continued to explain that the Quilt Gardens in Elkhart County end Oct. 1, but tourists are still flocking to the area to see these treasures through bus tours much later, so the county decided to do something these fall visitors could enjoy. Instead of having 20 small quilt gardens throughout the county, in October, they have have two fall flower carpets, filling an entire city block with 7,000 mums
— one set in Elkhart and the other set in Nappanee. The fall flower carpets were only intended to occur one year and then be done with. Instead, this is the third year of the colorful project, and as with every year, possibly the final year for display. Themes for the two flower carpets are different. In Elkhart, the theme is trains. In Nappanee, the theme is the arts. Three-hundred feet of lights brighten up the night in Nappanee, extenuating the artsy theme of the mumfilled garden. It is an homage to arts, with the comedy and tragedy masks, and ribbons, flowing down inside of an enchanted-looking corridor, which visitors can walk through portions of. The design comes from all

Elkhart’s lighting features the headlight of a train, glaring into the night sky based on the Mohawk 3001 at the National New York Central Railroad Museum in downtown Elkhart. The Elkhart Fall Flower Carpet also has a special offers for children and adults. A trivia game for youngsters allows them to answer a question and win a special conductor’s hat, and receive discounted entry to the museum. Participants must pick up the question at the mum garden and bring their answer to the museum to claim their prize. Once they enter their trivia question, they will also be entered for a chance to win a Lego set — Harry Potter for older kids, Thomas the Train for younger kids. On Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 5 - 8 p.m. during the Elkhart Downtown Art Walk, the train station will have free admission. Last year’s design at the Elkhart Fall Flower Carpet was based on elements of the Lerner Theatre, and the previous year’s design featured the Ruthmere Historical Museum. Obviously it’s not going to look exactly like a train, Craig Sears, Elkhart County Maintenance and Grounds Department, said of the Mohawk 3001 mum design. With a wooden placard featuring the title across the garden, the basic design is a silhouette of the engine in dark purple mums. “There are different things about each garden that bring it to life,” Nash said. Drunken Botanist discusses plants, spirits By JILL K. McDONALD
N
ILES, Mich. — Fernwood organizers are excited to welcome back four-time New York Times bestselling author Amy Stewart. In her latest book, “The Drunken Botanist,” Stewart explores the odd, unusual and surprisingly common plants that have produced the world’s greatest spirits. The book is a concoction of biology, chemistry, history, etymology and mixology–with more than 50 drink recipes and growing tips for gardeners. “The Drunken Botanist” was actually inspired by a bottle of gin Stewart’s friend received. The friend who was not a gin drinker and did not know what to do with it. “I launched into this diatribe about how gin should be fascinating to anybody who is interested in plants, because there are so many strange and diverse plans to go into a bottle of gin — Juniper, which is a require-
ment if you’re going to call it gin, but also citrus, lots of herbs and spices and the grains that the alcohol is distilled from,” Stewart said. “We got to talking about the plants that go into all the bottles behind the bar, and at some point I said, you know, somebody should write a book about that! Stewart’s latest book is a follow-up to the New York Times bestseller “Wicked Bugs” and “Wicked Plants.” She also has written "Flower Confidential", "The Last Bookstore in America", “The Earth Moved” and “From the Ground Up.” Her first book was published in 2001. Stewart has written for the New York Times, The Washington Post and many other newspapers and magazines. She is also the cofounder of the popular blog GardenRant. She lives in Eureka, California, with her husband Scott Brown. They own an antiquarian bookstore called Eureka Books and tends a flock of unruly hens in their

Enjoy live music while sampling spirits from three local distilleries: Journeyman Distillery, 18 Vodka and Indiana Whiskey Company. Cost is $50 per person. Stewart last appeared at Fernwood in Autumn 2012 to present a program on her book “Wicked Plants.” Benjamin Futa, Head of Horticulture and Grounds at Fernwood, said, “Amy’s latest book is another of her masterworks on the botanical world. Her material is well researched and creatively presented. Amy’s program in 2012 was high energy, entertaining and insightful and we’re excited she’s returning.” The upcoming event at Fernwood, “will be a highenergy event that exposes
people to plants in a new way – through the lens of the many beverages we may take for granted in our everyday lives,” Futa said. Stewart loves her live speaking engagements and says it is the fun part of her job. “The hard work is done, and now I get to travel around and go to interesting places and meet new people. I’ve been all over the country to all kinds of places I might not have otherwise ever had a chance to go. I like everything about it honestly,” Stewart said. To register for Amy Stewart’s events, visit Fernwood’s website, www. fernwoodbotanical.org. For questions, call Fernwood at (269) 695-6491. Registration deadline is Oct. 7, though registrations will be accepted until October 10 if there is still availability. To get in touch with the author, visit AmyStewart. com. ong-time Grape Sense readers know of my passion for dry rosé. The latest numbers show more and more Americans are enjoying the dry pink passion. The Nielsen growth statistics have been rather astounding the past few years. The last reporting period covered May 2013 to May of this year showed 20 percent growth in volume of imported Provence Rosé. If that’s not impressive enough, consider midsummer sales ending June 21 for the previous 52 weeks showing an incredible 55 percent growth in Rosé imports. But anecdotally I’ve witnessed growth beyond the French sales. At least two of the more prominent Indianapolis-area wine shops had a considerably larger rosé selection this summer than previous years. During summer trips to Oregon and California it certainly appeared more wineries were designating precious grapes for their first or second vintage of dry rosé. So if you haven’t tried dry Rose, what are you missing? Rosé hits just the right spot between dry white and red wines. It may be the most flexible wine in your wine rack. You can enjoy rosé with a very wide range of meals well beyond
COLUMNIST reds and whites. It’s also the best sipper in the wine rack for those evenings of small bites and a glass of wine. My other personal favorite wine is Pinot Noir and particularly Oregon Pinot. It’s always interesting to talk to winemakers and get their take on what’s happening in the vineyard this time of year. I met Dan Crank, Willamette Valley Vineyards winemaker, a couple of years ago at the Indy International Wine Competition. “The winemaking and vineyard team and I are now working around the clock to bring in fruit from our three estate vineyards,” Crank said of the on-going fall harvest. “The grapes have reached optimal ripeness from the evenly warm vintage, and have retained their naturally bright acidity from the cool nights. What sets 2014 apart from other warm weathered years is we didn’t experience heat spikes in the vineyard, sending the grapes into sun-shock. Instead, the fruit is healthy and near-perfection.” Crank picks Pinot Noir and Chardonnay first to make his ‘traditional-method’ sparkling wine. “The grapes were pressed immediately to avoid picking up color or tannin from the skins and are now fermenting. We will bottle this wine after

some time in barrel, and then inoculate for its secondary fermentation, which creates the sparkle.” Harvest time is always chaotic in any wine region. It’s a little extra chaotic this fall in Napa after the Aug. 24 earthquake. The estimated losses have constantly been upgraded to nearly $80 million. You can support some of the hardest hit wineries by going online and buying wine. Look for Robert Baile, Page Cellars, Laird, and Yates Family Winery. There are many more but those are smaller operations which can really use your wine shopping dollars. Howard W. Hewitt, Crawfordsville, Indiana, writes about wine every other week for more than 20 Midwestern newspapers. Write Howard at: hewitthoward@gmail.com

Small vistas, big myths Local artist featured at the South Bend Museum of Art

OUTH BEND, Ind. — Jason Cytacki grew up in South Bend, attended Indiana University South Bend for his undergraduate work followed by completing his MFA at the University of Notre Dame. Cytacki’s work focuses a critical eye on the muchromanticized period of the American Frontier and its continued place in the popular imagination. Epic western landscapes of the 19th Century fed audiences’ desires for hope of an American Utopia, just as the heroic cowboys riding in to the sunset from 1950s cinema lured a new audience into longing for a simpler time. While inaccurate and inflated, these iconic images have become deeply entwined with the American perception of self. “By constructing miniature dioramas of western
