Harbor Country celebrates fall harvest

H

ARBOR COUNTRY, Mich. — Harvest Days, an annual southwest Michigan tradition, will take place Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 10-13, throughout the eight towns of Harbor Country. This family-friendly celebration of fall includes special events, culinary delights, artist receptions, live performance, tastings and a scarecrow contest. This year, 19 uniquely created scarecrows and harvest-themed installations are competing for visitors votes. Follow the map and cast your ballot for your favorite. Bring a camera and take advantage of a unique photo opportunity. The contest gets better each year, thanks to the creativity of local artists, some using the most non-traditional materials. Harvest Days is inspired by the bounty and beauty of Harbor Country. Local chefs beget caramel apples, salsa, pies, delicious fall soups and seasonally inspired dishes. Adults will enjoy seasonal beers, wines and creative cocktails. The chili cook-off is certain to draw the most discerning palettes with a dozen contestants vying for the prize in this tasty culinary tradition. Children of all ages will enjoy hayrides, a corn maze, pumpkin painting and a scavenger hunt on wooded trails. Owners can enter their pets in the doggie apple bobbing

contest or get a complimentary sketch of their dog. Several local shops offer special sales, trunk shows, and refreshments as guests peruse their unique offerings and visit the local Farmers Markets for the freshest produce. Leaders say visitors shouldn’t miss the Harvest & Wine Festival on Saturday, featuring live music, wine tasting and children’s activities at New Buffalo’s Lions Park. They can take pleasure in glorious fall colors as they walk, bike, or drive throughout the Harbor Country communities of Sawyer, Harbert, Lakeside, Union Pier, New Buffalo, Michiana, Grand Beach and Three Oaks in southwest Michigan. Harvest Days is sponsored by the Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce. A complete schedule for this four-day event is available at local businesses and at harborcountry.org. More information can be found by calling (269) 469-5409. The Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce was established in 1981 to represent the eight communities of Michiana, Grand Beach, New Buffalo, Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert, Sawyer and Three Oaks. The Chamber serves as an advocate for business and a leader for economic development efforts to make Harbor Country a premier place to live, work, and play.

Vickie Phillipson, event co-chairman and program director of the Chamber of Commerce & DDA, said she is pleased to welcome artisans Doloros Meisterheim and Don Wilcox, who will demonstrate their art at the Dowagiac Area History Museum. Steve Arseneau, museum director, said Meisterheim will present a basic spinning demonstration and will answer questions about spinning and weaving from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the museum. Meisterheim, who has an arts degree with a specialty in fiber arts and leather, took up spinning and weaving in the 1980s. As part of a Shaker Crafts Guild, Doloros and her husband, Richard, eventually put together a small business that included the repair of spinning wheels. Also appearing at the museum will be master carver Don Wilcox, a member of Fruit Belt Wood Carvers, who will present a live carving demonstration. Wilcox, whose depiction of historic downtown Dowagiac can be seen at Front Street Crossing, will present a live carving demonstration by replicating a pattern for a nameplate to a Round Oak D-16 heating stove. He will also discuss pattern-making and explain some of the molding process with visitors. Festival organizers are also pleased to welcome back Mike Evans, an award-winning ice carver from Edwardsburg. Evans, who has appeared numerous times at this community’s Ice Time Festival, will present a wood carving exhibition outside Saylor’s Front Street Pizzeria from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From Dowagiac, wood burning artist Larry Collins, who began drawing at the age of nine, will have pieces of his art for sale. At 22, Collins became interested in wood burning and has since incorporated many of these pieces into other art forms such as note cards, limited edition

Celebrate the Harvest

Buchanan festival features new events, old favorites By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert @leaderpub.com

UCHANAN, Mich. — The Buchanan Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting Southwest Michigan to get its “Fall on” at Buchanan’s annual autumn festival, Harvest Buchanan. The free festival begins Friday with a Teen Dance Sponsored by Honor Credit Union after the Buchanan High School football team’s homecoming game. The celebration kicks into high gear Saturday with a full day’s worth of activities, including a 5K run/walk in the morning and live entertainment beginning in the afternoon at the Buchanan Downtown Common. “This is a completely local event with local brews, local DJs, local everything,” said Randy Hendrickson, chamber director. “Buchanan has a lot going on right now and this is a great chance to come out and see it for yourself.” Hendrickson said the most noteworthy new addition to the festival is the Teen Dance. Sponsored by Honor Credit Union, the Teen Dance features a DJ, lightshow and refreshments and is open to people ages 13-18 at the Buchanan Common. The first 100 people in will get a free T-shirt. Admission is $2.

“The Teen Dance is in response to the lack of teen events offered in the community,” Hendrickson said. “Buchanan hasn’t had a homecoming dance in years, so we are very happy to put on a teen event for Buchanan and students from other communities.” The second annual McCoy’s Creek Trail 5K Run and Walk is a familyfriendly event showcasing the McCoy’s Creek Trail that runs directly through the downtown. Race-day registration opens at 7 a.m. with the race starting at 8:30 a.m. Early packet pick up will be available Friday at Bucktown Studio. Call (269) 362-1967 for more information. If you are looking for adventure, Bear Cave Resort is offering a cave tour on the St. Joseph River from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (269) 695-3050 to reserve a canoe or kayak. Hendrickson said children are encouraged to bring their pedal tractors during the antique tractor show at 1 p.m. on Days Avenue. Approximately 20 antique tractors are registered for the event. The Buchanan District Library will be offering a variety of free childrens’ activities and games during its Kids Korner and Pumpkin Jamboree, sponsored by United Federal Credit Union. Beginning at 2 p.m., the Common Stage will feature live music from local musicians, including the Sypian Band, Mark Cornwall and 5th Gear. Local Wheatberry Restaurant and Tavern will be serving craft beer, wine and food. AEP is the primary event sponsor. D. Mottl Realty is sponsoring the live entertainment.
