Neil Goldberg is the founder and producer of Cirque Dreams. was really successful and it continues to evolve and we have multiple companies touring simultaneously,” Goldberg said. “In seven years the demand has really grown. They had been looking for a date to bring it back and sometimes it doesn’t align, but this year it did. “We are coming back for an extra day and an extra show because the demand was so strong last time. It is a great holiday show that has something in it for everyone.” Goldberg founded Cirque Dreams 20 years ago and the brand has created shows that have appeared around the world and at a variety of venues including casinos, theaters, theme parks, cruise lines and on Broadway. He admits that he never dreamed it would be the phenomenon it has become. “I am an artist and I think as all true artists that we think about the money or the future or where we are

going to be in 20 years,” Goldberg said. “We think about the art and the work. I have grown into becoming a pretty savvy businessman throughout this journey with Cirque Dreams. It certainly has exceeded my expectations.” Goldberg added that he continues to look at ways to improve the shows and is always looking to make them bigger and better. “I am always looking to find new ways to bring the audience to their feet,” he said. Goldberg has designed and created productions for two Super Bowls, the NBA, Busch Gardens, Six Flags, Miss Universe and three of the four major television networks — NBC, CBS and ABC. And how does he keep multiple shows touring simultaneously with all the costumes, acts and performers going? “It is a fine, well-oiled machine that operates 24-seven,” he said. “We

have right now with all the Cirque Dreams shows we have in the United States and overseas, we have 160plus artists and employees working in our shows. My day starts — well my day never ends because we are in so many different time zones. You also have to be on call because you never know where there is going to be a potential challenge.” Goldberg said that there is a certain magic to the show that keeps the audiences mesmerized and coming back. “I think theater in general is magical,” he said. “With Cirque Dreams Holidaze, what is even more magical than that is the holiday season. It just sort of lends itself to the imagination. To being magical and being festive Unlike any other Cirque show, Cirque Dreams Holidaze is so acceptable, understandable and appreciated by the audience because we are combining classic songs like “Winter Wonderland,” “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and we are taking contortionists and putting them inside candy canes. So you are not really watching a contortionist doing an acrobatic act. You are watching candy canes twist and turn which conjures up your imagination to say ‘I always put candy canes on my Christmas tree, I wonder if they come to life if they would do that. We also do the same with gingerbread men and with toy soldiers. “We take all the iconic imagery of the holiday season and dress it up in a theatrical stage setting. When we put it all together it is part Broadway musical, part Cirque show and part holiday spectacle all in one.

Expert offers shopping tips for New Year's travelers By Lori Verderame As the new year commences, many of us find ourselves taking to the skies or roads on trips for business and pleasure. At this busy time of the year, many people find themselves hustling and bustling to new locales for work or play. As an expert appraiser, people often ask me what items are worth at locations around the world. When I travel-- and I travel a lot-- I often meet people who ask me what is a good buy or how to spot a bargain. Here’s the 411 on what to shopping for cool collectibles in many parts of the world. When collectors travel to various parts of the world, here are some of the collectible items that you may want to shop for in some famed yet fabulous far-off locales: • Australia: Coral jewelry • Caribbean islands: Giant seashells, Woven handbags • China: Paintings • Costa Rica: Coffee, hand-made wooden crafts • Denmark: Hand-made wood objects • Finland: Wool clothing • Germany: Contemporary art, knives • Greece: Pottery • Guatemala: Santos sculptures • Italy: Leather goods and fashion accessories • Japan: Knives and swords • Mexico: Silver, terracotta pottery • Middle East: Gemstones • New Zealand: Wool sweaters • Panama: Hats • Turkey: Linens, Tiles • Puerto Rico: Mahogany furniture • Russia: Matroyskas or nesting dolls • South Pacific islands: Basketry, Black pears • Spain: Lladro figurines Of course, this list is not all inclusive, but it gives travelers a good starting point about what types of objects may be good buys in certain places. While the unique qualities of objects found in far off lands are interesting, be prepared to shop wisely while on vacation or traveling. Negotiate with cash when you can, be knowledgeable about exchange rates,

and be sure to fully understand the shipping and return policies. Remember that in many tourist areas and big cities, the prices are inflated in an effort to attract buyers. Stick to your budget and compare prices from shop to shop whenever you can. No matter where you travel,

remember that quality equals value. Wherever you shop—at home or abroad—negotiate politely and consider the artisan and the locale when shopping for hand-made items. The allure of handmade items is the fact that they demonstrate a special talent and help you to recall a special trip as a keepsake or souvenir. Some of my most favorite collectibles from my travels are those hand-made items that I bought directly from the artisan or those objects that I bought after an exchange with a shop owner or other local resident. I remember clearly the time I watched as a talented Romanian woman crocheted a tablecloth in Bucharest that I now use in my sunroom, how I tried to break the language barrier with a nun at

the Vatican gift shop while I shopped for silver rosary beads blessed by the Pope for my mother, and I remember when a local man drew me a map of the local roads so I could find the sculpture studio of a Santos carver in Guatemala. Singer Songwriter winner focused on future

T

HREE OAKS, Mich. — “Writing is the foundation. I’m just trying to juggle it.” James Neary is a singer and guitarist who, at the age of 25, is working toward his second EP and his second album. He’s performed for years at open mics and local venues, and gained esteem in 2013 as the winner of the first Acorn Theater Singer Songwriter competition. That award, along with a successful crowdfunding campaign, helped to launch his first album, fittingly titled “2013.” James met with me recently just around the corner from the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks to discuss his upcoming projects and how he navigates the world as an artist. Neary is currently writing his second album, but fans will be able to enjoy new music from him before that release. He has an EP written and in the demo stage, with hopes for recording and release early next year. He

COLUMNIST

Justin Flagel describes the music as introspective and therapeutic, songs that didn’t previously have a home or fit into the theme of “2013.” It’s his hope that the music of the EP will help listeners cope with dark times in their own lives. “This is just about a hard copy of the last few hard chapters of my life,” he said. “I like the idea of putting something out there that is kind of true to form, here’s a piece of me. Good music has the power to help people get through a lot of stuff.” Neary described the art

of creating an album and finding a way to weave those themes together into an overall arc. 2013 was his first experience at arranging a full album and drew from a collection of different pieces from over the years that he wanted to get out to an audience. He labored and found a story arc within the varied works of creativity, but hadn’t planned each song that way when writing them. He described his current goal as making something deeper that “makes people rethink, reevaluate priorities, and takes them on a journey.” He told me about his excitement at writing to a particular theme in his new works and discussed the evolution of successful musicians, such as Muse, who created follow-up albums with intentional focus and topic. “On [the second Muse album], every song felt like it fit,” he said, laying out the cohesive story arcs in their subsequent albums. “I strive to do something that sophisticated.”

We discussed the balance of being an artist in the age of social media, when both creation and marketing become responsibilities of the musician. Neary uses Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to promote shows and keep his fans up to date on news regarding his music. He explains himself as “still a little foreign to the effective marketing,” trying to figure out the techniques of getting his music to new fans while remaining authentic. “It’s starting to happen,” he said, describing a noticeable response his postings online and audience members who reference following his social media. “I’m trying to attack it on all fronts. I don’t know how to snowball it. But I’m trying my best to just keep my nose to the music.” Marketing is a required part of being an artist in the modern world, according to him, but it is not the focus. Instead, the purpose is the art and the promotion is simply meant to

maintain and grow his presence. He recounts his own experiences as a fan, finding new music in openers at live performances and from suggestions from fellow music lovers. His goal is to put out material that is catchy, relatable and memorable people and trust that people who like it will share it. “I have faith in the idea that if you build it, they will come,” he said, going on to describe a fan in Saudi Arabia who travels the world and often shares Neary’s music with others. “I just tried to put out good music. He shared it because he liked it.” In describing success, James Neary finds it difficult to define the line of “I did it, I made it.” In some ways, such as connecting with fans here and in the far reaches of other countries, he’s living it. He hopes to continue writing music that is cathartic both for him and fans. He has the larger goals of “being able to live comfortably off my music” and to tour, both nation-

ally and internationally, but he keeps focused on a small number of measurable, immediate goals. He would like to achieve a particular number of connections with fans on social media. He has a list of certain venues where he’d like to perform and certain regions where he’d like to tour. Most importantly, he wants his music to connect with people, current fans and new. You can connect with James Neary, find information on his upcoming shows and releases, and listen to his current music, including the album, 2013, by visiting faceb o o k . c o m / JamesNearyMusic. Ann Arbor artist next up in Hanson Theatre Living Room Series

B

E N T O N T O W N S H I P, Mich. – The second installment of The Mendel Center Hanson Theatre Living Room Series features another pure Michigan artist when Chris Bathgate performs at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22. This prolific singer, songwriter, and musician has gathered a following in southeastern Michigan

with his stark, heart-broken songs that take a nuanced look at life and music. After moving to Michigan to attend the University of Michigan’s School of Art and Design in 2001, Bathgate emerged from the Ann Arbor local music scene. This strong local presence led to the attention of locally based label Quite Scientific and

eral European solo-tours and a fast-growing international visibility. Since then, Chris has released five additional albums with Quite Scientific, including his most recent and prominent album to date —Salt Year (2011). During that time Chris began work on the project SKULLLS, filmed performance videos, and continued writing solo material for future release. He became active again in the fall of 2014 and has continued to tour and film performances of unreleased songs. His new EP Old Factory will be released early 2016.
