Actors wanted
S
T. JOSEPH, Mich. — The Twin City Players (TCP) will hold auditions for its next mainstage production of the 2015-2016 season this January. Auditions for the April production of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” based on the novel by Harper Lee, dramatized by Christopher Sergel and directed by August Garritano, will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14 and Friday, Jan. 15 and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16. “To Kill a Mockingbird” offers a variety of roles for 12 men, eight women and several supporting roles. Three roles call for children/teens between 9 to 14 years old. Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to attend. Actors need only attend one audition session, but are welcome to attend both. Actors will be asked to perform readings from the script. Auditions will be at on Twin City Players Campus at 600 West Glenlord Road, St. Joseph, Michigan 49085. About “To Kill a Mockingbird” Scout, a young girl in a quiet southern town, is about to experience the dramatic events that will affect the rest of her life. She and her brother, Jem, are being raised by their widowed father, Atticus, and by a strong-minded housekeeper, Calpurnia. Wide-eyed Scout is fascinated with the sensitively revealed people of her small town, but, from the start, there's a rumble of thunder just under the calm surface of the life here. Garritano said of the production, “This is an American literary classic. Most people read “To Kill a Mockingbird” in school and remember it’s a beautiful, yet somewhat haunting, tale of race relations in America. In our current political climate, I feel this piece is very relevant and timeless. I invite you to audition and please spread the word.” Character list Scout (Caucasian) — A young girl who is about to experience events that will shape the rest of her life. She should, ideally, seem as young as nine. She is such an important role to play, however, it will probably be necessary to cast an older girl in the part. Jean Louise (Caucasian) — The narrator. She is Scout, grown older and
looking back on the time she was the young Scout. She is looking for answers to questions that still exist in her memory of that time. Jem (Caucasian) — He is a few years older than his sister Scout. Atticus (Caucasian) — He's tall, quietly impressive, reserved, civilized and nearly 50. California (African American) — Proud and capable, she has raised the motherless Scout and Jem. Dill (Caucasian) — Small, blonde and wise beyond his years, Dill is about the same age as Jem. Maude Atkinson (Caucasian) — Slightly younger than Atticus, she is a lovely sensitive woman. Walter Cunningham (Caucasian) — He is a hard-up farmer who shares the prejudices of this time and place but who is nevertheless a man who can be reached as a human being. Reverend Sykes (African American) — Reverend Sykes is the minister of the First Purchased Church, called that because it was paid for with the first money earned by the freed slaves. Heck Tate (Caucasian) — Heck is the town sheriff and a complex man. He does his duty as he sees it, and enforces the law without favor. Stephanie Crawford (Caucasian) — She's a neighborhood gossip, and she enjoys it to the hilt. Nathan Radley (Caucasian) — He is a thin, laconic man. This role may easily be doubled with that of Boo Radley. Boo Radley (Caucasian) — Arthur Radley is a recluse who has been inside his house for 15 years. Mrs. Dubose (Caucasian) — She is an old woman. She is ill, working with difficulty. Her pain makes her biting, bitter, and angry. Tom Robinson (African American) — Robinson is handsome and vital. His left hand was crippled by a childhood accident and is held against his chest. Helen Robinson (African American) — She is half numb with the shock of the false charge against her husband Tom. Judge Taylor (Caucasian) — The judge is a wintry man of the South, who

does what he can within the context of his time to see justice done in his courtroom. While he tries to run his court impartially, his sympathy is with Tom. Mr. Gilmer (Caucasian) — He is a public prosecutor who is doing his job and trying to convict Tom. Bob Ewell (Caucasian) — He is a little bantam-cock of a man who lives with his large family by the town dump. As Harper Lee describes the family's situation, "The town gave them Christmas baskets, welfare money, and the back of their hand." Mayella (Caucasian) — The oldest daughter of Bob Ewell, Mayella is a desperately lonely and overworked young woman whose need for compassion has overwhelmed every other emotion. However, when her effort to reach out explodes in her face, she fights just as desperately for what she thinks is survival. Performance dates are April 1-17, 2016. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is pro-

‘Water by the Spoonful’ Off-Broadway Series serves a sobering drama with poetic passages, turbulent behavior
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — South Bend Civic Theatre catapults into the 2016 season with Quiara Alegria Hudes’ Water by the Spoonful, directed by Marlon D. Deleon. In 2012, Hudes was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama with this work that drags its audiences through a gritty, honest examination of family dynamics, dating, and simply making a genuine, personal connection in the 21st century. Performing from Jan. 8, through the 17th in the Warner Theatre, tickets are available at sbct.org or by calling (574) 234-1112. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the United States Marine Corps, a young man has returned home to Philadelphia following his second tour in Iraq, and his attempt to find some stability in his life after the Corps involves him making sandwiches at a local Subway restaurant. His aunt, his cousin, his mother, and his sister are all in the City of Brotherly Love as well, but what develops is miles away from a joyous family reunion. Somewhere in cyberspace, a chat room is an anchor for those fighting their way out of the clutches of drug addiction. Behind screen names and without faces they reach out across international waters, state lines, and time zones, baring their souls and scrambling for a connection beyond the keyboards and touchscreens of their online persona, while still remaining far enough to keep themselves safe. In the driver’s seat for this theatrical journey is
Marlon D. Deleon, a California native who had his acting debut with the Civic in November 2014 as Kawabata in Richard Greenberg’s Take Me Out (directed by Aaron Nichols). He’s proud to be making his directorial debut with Spoonful, laughing, “I never thought leaving California would help my theatre career, but since I met Aaron [Nichols], it’s been fantastic.” But when talking about Spoonful, his tone quickly shifts. “This play is very personal to me on multiple levels. I received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy back in 2004, for a service-connected disability, and shortly after is when I decided to return to the theatre and get my degree in Theatre directing. During my enlistment and afterwards, I had my own bouts with addiction as well, but I’m very proud to say I made it through with the help of family, friends, and theatre.” What many don’t realize is that they’re more familiar with Quiara Alegria Hudes’ work than they know. With the recent announcement of acclaimed musical Hamilton launching in Chicago, the name Lin-Manuel Miranda is leaping from the lips of Americans. For many, Miranda was welcomed into the ears and hearts of theatregoers everywhere as the lyricist and composer for In the Heights, the 2008 Tony Award winner for Best Musical. Hudes was also a key player on the Heights team--as the playwright. She is lauded as one of today’s great Latina playwrights. Born in Philadelphia, her work has been produced and translated internationally.
