Local artist turns passion into career
Mishawaka native creates, sells long boards By TIM MOSIER tim.moshier @leaderpub.com
T
hey say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. An Ancilla College student and Mishawaka native is starting to realize the full weight of that sentiment while crafting and selling his hand-made long boards. Long boards, often confused for skateboards, are set up similarly, but are about 50 percent larger and with a flat board that is built for transportation, not tricks. Thanks to his high school and college education, Andrew Huff has been able to merge his passion with his career to professionally create and sell long boards. Huff is the owner and manager of Huff & Puff Board Co., a Mishawaka business in which Huff uses reclaimed wood from all over the area to create custom long boards. “In high school I won state in a carpentry competition and then went on to nationals. Once my two passions — carpentry and boarding — came together,
I knew I wanted to begin handcrafting my own boards. Things just kind of took off after that,” Huff said. Huff learned his woodworking skills starting at the Elkhart Area Career Center where he built a house through the building trades program, he said. From there he decided to buy his own wood working equipment including his own press, planer and band saw. Huff, a sophomore graduating from Ancilla College this spring with an A.S. in business administration, will begin selling his long boards at Culver Marina and Outpost Sports on Grape Road in Mishawaka, Indiana, this spring. Huff attributes some of his success to his ability to see market trends before they develop. When the artist began creating long boards, the interest in the product was not nearly as popular as it is today. The long board industry really picked up steam in 2012 and has been gaining interest ever since, particularly on college campuses. Some area skate board shops have begun bringing

local retail shops. I love to see kids riding my boards around town so I especially love the local sales,” Huff said. “I think [the sport] is so popular because anyone can do it. Long boarding is
easy to learn and it is such an awesome feeling once you get the hang of it.” If current trends continue, Huff said he expects to increase his product line and maybe expand his workshop. It is especially important to Huff that his creation keeps its small town charm. “In the next couple years I would love to
expand and upgrade some of my equipment so I can handcraft more boards,” Huff said, “At the same time, I don’t want to get out of the small, custom, local shop category because that is what really makes Huff and Puff unique. For more information on Huff & Puff Board Co. visit HuffPuffBoardCo. com

Face to face? here are numerous websites and publications detailing everything happening in the world of wine. Sometimes those issues are worth sharing. Indiana Senate Bill 113 – The Indiana Direct Shipping bill remains in House committee. The bill would remove the ridiculous 2006 restriction on Indiana wineries requiring a face-to-face purchase before wine can be shipped in state. The bill is a doubleedged sword opening up an important stream of revenue for small wineries but increasing the licensing fee from $100 to $500. Contact your local legislator asking the fee be restored to $100 as Sen. Phil Boots intended. There’s a pattern here if you pay attention. The big alcohol-related legislation of the session is Sunday sales but the same thing has happened. The legislation actually failed this week because the liquor lobby (read wholesalers/some retailers) objected. The bill was

Dry Rose, and particularly dry French Rose, is one of the biggest success stories of the last decade. For too long pink meant sweet but now pink, or a light salmon color, means great dry French wine. For the 11th straight year exports to the U.S. of Provence Rose’ wine increased by double digits. In 2014, Rose exports went up 29 percent on volume. Oregon Stature Grows. The last two years have established the importance of Oregon Pinot Noir above and beyond some of its founders wildest expectations. When the ‘big boys’ start buying up properties it’s easy to label Oregon Pinot a worldwide success story. Domaine Drouhin started the foreign investment in the 1980s but recently it has exploded. T. JOSEPH, Michigan — The St. Joseph lighthouses soon will make an appearance in Staten Island, New York. Two photos of the iconic structures taken by Laura Kraklau of St. Joseph will be included in the “Lighthouse Stories and Tales of the Sea” National Lighthouse Museum and Creative Photographers Guild First National Juried Photography Show. The exhibition runs March 7 to 29, at the National Lighthouse Museum in Staten Island. The “Lighthouse Stories and Tales of the Sea” exhibit pays homage, through photography, to the visual stories, tales and history of the great lighthouses, bays, waterways and seas throughout the world. Of the 550 pieces submitted for consideration, just 70 were accepted into
the show. “For me, the story of the St. Joseph lighthouses is one of strength and quiet resilience. That is what I was striving to convey through these photos. I’m honored the jurors saw that and chose to include these images in the show,” Kraklau said. “It’s exciting to share the story of our
lighthouses at a national level.” In November, Kraklau released a coffee table book of photography about the pair of lighthouses. “View 366: A Visual Story of the St. Joseph Lighthouses” chronicles Kraklau’s journey of photographing the structures every day for an entire

ichigan City, Ind. — Fur Simon will perform at Lubeznik Center for the Arts during First Friday. The group is described as an eccentric mix of coffee shop acoustic classics with an eclectic push. The performance will begin at 5:30 p.m. Between sets, visitors are invited to walk downstairs for an opening reception of Pipelines and Borderlines in the NIPSCO Education Studios. This exhibition follows in the tradition of Mexcican political printmaking by focusing on the Tar Sands in Alberta, Canda and the BP Refinery in Whiting, Indiana. Guests can also enjoy delicious light bites provided by Shoreline Brewery, enhancing the First Friday experience at LCA. Beverages will also
be available for a nominal fee. Fur Sermon Fur Sermon is the musical collaboration of Shelbi Albert and Jake Lashenik. The two have combined their passion for exploring the world of electronic music and acoustic into one genre, giving them a modern indie influence in their songs. “We started singing together for fun when I started with The Diggity about three years ago and things just fell into plays,” Alber said. “We started Fur Sermon and cranked out an album within a year. We wanted to perform more together acoustically and we are both music nerds, so we decided to incorporate a lot of those old songs that always get stuck in your head but you never knew all the
words into our set.” Albert said now the group does a mix of original music with covers to grasp the audience’s attention. “I think overall we are a good mix to appeal to broad audiences. We play a range from old rock and roll songs to more obscure pop covers. We’re motivated by seeing people happy.”
“Each of the accomplished artists participating creates their unique vision that can connect with people and create awareness and hopefully a sense of empowerment for those of us who are not multinational corporations,” Keys said.
