Performing stunts, building confidence Dowagiac students to participate in special show during Dogwood

By TED YOAKUM ted.yoakum@leaderpub.com

OWAGIAC, Mich. — While not as experienced as the rest of this year’s lineup of artists, the group of performers who will take the stage of the Dowagiac Middle School Performing Arts Center for the opening shows of the 2016 Dogwood Fine Arts Festival will be immediately recognizable to the audience. Kindergarten through 12th-grade students will have the opportunity to join the high-flying performers with Kalamazoo’s Aerial Angels for a special series of shows during the May fine arts festival, entitled “Starfish Circus.” Students interested in participating in the show are encouraged to attend open auditions for the program from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the middle school auditorium. Students who attend the tryout will be selected to serve different roles during the performance, and will spend two weeks learning the various tricks and stunts from five instructors with the Aerial Angels, said director Allison Williams. No experience in dance or other performing arts is necessary. Instructors will concentrate on teaching kids the basics of the equipment they will be using during the shows, followed by some basic moves before putting it altogether in a choreographed routine, Williams said. “It’s all about taking risks and allowing failure to be part of the program. Because when you fail, it means you’re trying something new,” Williams said. Among the skills students will learn are aerial silks, where they will perform acrobatic stunts from fabric suspended in the air; spinning poi, where students will swing illuminated rods to create a light show; and other acrobatic stunts. Other students will have a chance to perform in various comedy routines throughout each show. Younger children, instead of performing aerialbased stunts, will do basic cartwheels and other grounded acrobatics during the performances. The Starfish Circus program is the creation of Williams, the founder of the Aerial Angels, a performing arts company that specializes in highflying acrobatics. Working with their first batch of students in 2003, Williams and other instructors have taught elementary, junior high and high school students how to perform various acrobatic routines and stunts at institutions throughout the U.S., Williams said. “I love working with high school students,” Williams said. “They’re at that age when a little nudge can make

a huge difference.” While the routine may at first appear impossible for new students to grasp when they first begin rehearsals, by breaking down everything into simple, basic steps, the instructors help the performers build their newfound skills — as well their confidence, Williams said. “The most amazing thing about the program is how many kids feel like it has influenced the direction of

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — “View Through a Colored Prism” works in glass by April Wagner will be featured at the Inn at Harbor Shores from April 30 through Sept. 12. An opening reception will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13 at the Inn at Harbor Shores. A video of Wagner at work will also be shown during the reception. The event is free and open to the public. Wagner’s specially commissioned glass sculpture titled “L’eau D’Vie,” suspended over the lobby, is the centerpiece of the Inn at Harbor Shores. This piece, described by Inn at Harbor Shores leaders as “mesmerizing” required four weeks for Wagner to blow the 550 individual glass pieces, creating her largest glass sculpture ever. Another six days, precariously balanced on a lift to precisely dangle the hand-blown pieces from the vaulted ceiling, completed the project. “I am pleased to be invited to show my work at The Inn, where I had the pleasure of working with the designers to create the lobby chandelier,” Wager said. Epiphany Glass is located at 770

Orchard Lake Road in Pontiac, Michigan, is a state-of-the-art, 4,000 square foot glassblowing studio and gallery. Since 1997, Epiphany’s distinctive look is the creation of artist and owner April Wagner. Wagner adds a contemporary twist to the traditional fazzoletto technique, which originated in the Venini factory of Murano, Italy, during the 1930s and was later popularized by Seattle glass artists. Her work is found in many public and private collections, including those of The Four Seasons — Vail, The Hyatt Maui Regency Resort & Spa, General Motors, Pfizer, Strategic Staffing Solutions, Vladimir Putin, Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson. The Gallery at Harbor Shores celebrates the talents of exclusively Michigan artists in the rotating exhibits located on the second floor of The Inn at Harbor Shores. The art program has two components: a permanent collection displayed in rooms and public areas and rotating exhibitions in the Gallery curated by Susan Wilczak. The Gallery at Harbor Shores is open to the public and art on display is available for purchase.

Born in Muskegon, Michigan, a small town on the shores of Lake Michigan, Wagner grew up enjoying many summers on sandy white beaches. A natural artist, her interest in form, color and line were apparent since early childhood. Her talent earned her a scholarship to Interlochen Arts Academy, an exclusive private high school for the arts, jumpstarting her career. Wagner initially focused on ceramics, but while in college, developed a passion for blowing glass. “I was in love with ceramics, but then I tried glassblowing and realized I never wanted to work in clay again. I’d found the thing I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” April graduated with a BFA in 1996 from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. April has been blowing glass for more than 20 years. She founded and owns Epiphany Studios in Pontiac, Michigan, the largest private hot glass blowing studio in the Midwest. Her work is shown in more than 300 galleries worldwide and is featured in numerous public, private and corporate collections, including GM, Pfizer, Strategic Staffing Solutions, The Townsend Hotel, Hyatt Maui Resort and The Four Seasons Resorts.

The vinyl experience

Record enthusiast enthused by comeback

N

ILES, Mich. — “I don’t play anything in my house but vinyl.” Local musician Tom Moore is not adverse to the listening options of the digital age. While on the go, he will bring along an iPod or other digital device for portable listening. He keeps CDs around for his car. At his house, however, the speakers are only projecting music from his record collection. We were recently discussing the world of vinyl after Tom had come into possession of a large record collection left to him after the passing of his friend, Neil Raby. He recalled tales of venturing out with Neil to store after store so they could both add to their libraries. His friend would pick up an album based on as little as an interesting musician name or attractive album cover. Together, they would explore genres and expand their tastes, leading to a library that is today full of stories. “I absolutely love it,” Tom said. “The ritual, there’s something about it that’s so special to me, pulling the record out of the sleeve, cleaning them, the turntable. And there’s nothing like the sound of vinyl.” After collecting for so long, Tom is pleased to see the resurgence of the format. He remembers coming home to find his teenage daughter sitting by his turntable with records spread out around her. Now she has a record player of her own and

regularly plays vinyl. “She caught the bug,” he said, recalling his daughter and her friends digging into his collection. “That was very heartwarming to witness.” Matt Shaver, the owner of Niles record store Rumor Has It, is also pleased with the renewed popularity of vinyl. He has purchased and sold records for many years, maintaining a store front for the last five years. He pointed out to me that during the 2015 holiday season, turntables were the number one home audio item sold on Amazon.com and was one of the top-selling of all products. “Tables being sold means records being eaten up,” he said. He says that high schoolers and young kids account for nearly half of his business now. “They’re buying everything. They’ll get some swing music, they’ll get Sinatra. They’re just trying

to build their collection and find fun music.” He credits the physical experience of records for a large part of the resurgence. Customers are able to take home a tangible product with liner notes, cover art and photography included. New albums released on vinyl will often include a poster and typically offer a free digital download of the same music, giving listeners the convenience of the modern age coupled with the hands-on experience. We discussed the adventure of the hunt for older records. He described customers coming in and spending hours digging through his selection of used vinyl, often bonding with each other and telling stories of where and when they found a long sought album. I related it to my own experience as a comic book collector, knowing that I could find any item on my wishlist on the Internet, but waiting for the fun of going to stores and conventions to dig through the collections. “If they can find what they’re looking for during the search, that’s much more satisfying than buying on Amazon,” Matt said. Matt works to keep his used collection constantly revolving for his customers. He also works to bring in new music on vinyl that is not as widely available, knowing that fans of independent music, punk rock and other less radio friendly genres are always in need for a place to buy their music.
