S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — Those with hungry bellies and an eye for good food should plan to loosen their belts and enjoy foods of all kinds on May 6 as Taste of Michiana returns to celebrate its 25th anniversary. With its festive return a timely compliment to South Bend’s 150th birthday, foodies and fun-seekers are once again in for a treat from 5 to 8 p.m. May 6.. Well, more precisely — a host of treats. Chef Bela Szalay, executive chef for the nonprofit Life Treatment Center, is in his fourth year heading the annual event. He took the reins when the announcement came that Taste of Michiana would no longer
be held in 2012. “It’s very important to me that this continue,” said Szalay during a mini-preview of the main event. With more than 40 local restaurant, brewery and winery vendors, the master chef anticipates a record turnout. “There’s something for everybody,” Szalay said. “Kids, families — everyone can enjoy this.” With tickets at $25 per adult and $10 per child ages 6 to 16 (age 5 and under free), attendees have ample opportunity to get their fill of food and entertainment, all while contributing to a charitable cause. Proceeds will benefit the drug treatment center that Szalay has served for 20 years, and Jane’s House, serving women with drug, alcohol and gambling

addictions. Hungry to grow last year’s success of more than 2,000 attending and $20,000 raised, Taste of Michiana will offer an eclectic mix of local establishments to satisfy a wide range of culinary curiosity. From new mom-andpops to seasoned institutions, restauranteurs enjoy the opportunity to highlight menu items from sweet cakes to savory pot-skewers. Local menus by Linden Grill, Jim’s Smokehouse Café, AngLes Bar and Grill and CJ’s Pub present hearty and home-style fare for the eager appetite, while ethnic delectables are offered by Weiss Gasthaus, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Javier’s Bistro, and Four Horseman Pizzeria. Evil Czech Brewery’s sizable green bean fries, roughly finger-width, will be among the food items. “Those are my favorite to have,” Szalay said. Sweet tooth authorities like Sugar Shack Bakery, South Bend Chocolate Café and Sweet Frog’s are enough to bring the kid out in anyone — and consequentially encourages
everyone to bring their kids out. “South Bend Chocolate Factory will be here with their 6-foot chocolate fountain,” Szalay said. “[Guests] will be able to dip different fruits in there.” Dipping into adult-only refreshments, a number of local wineries, breweries and distilleries boast an inviting variety of local brews and vintages for tasting pleasure. Easily Winery, Journeyman Distillery and Round Barn Winery are scheduled to attend, as well as Lemon Creek Winery, which Szalay said is the most tenured Taste of Michiana vendor, appearing every year since the very first. Szalay is not forgetting the flair of entertainment, either. He said the South Bend Derby Girls are ready to roll in full gear during the event, clearing tables and adding a novel excitement. With a feast of edible enjoyment, capped by a live performance by the band Alligator Blackbird, Szalay has prepared yet another opportunity for the local community to eat, drink, and be merry.

Sounds by South Bend
State Theater hosts pre-festival preview in conjunction with DTSB’s First Friday
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — Sounds by South Bend Music Festival (which will be offered May 7 to 9) will host a special SBSB Pre-Festival Preview Show on May 1, at The State Theater in conjunction with Downtown South Bend, Inc.’s First Fridays. This concert features performances by strong female fronted bands, including international touring act and harp folk rock band Timbre (Nashville, Tennessee) OSouth Bend’s Moon Rock band Dog & Pony and regional touring act and soulful songstress Dena Dena Dena backed by a four-piece band (South Bend). Timbre, a harpist that has played with the likes of Jack White of the White Stripes, Tom Jones, mewithoutYou, Son Lux, and countless others, will be returning to South Bend for the first time since her performance at The Pool in April of 2014 when she opened for My Brightest Diamond. Timbre, no stranger to South Bend, having played The Pool and at the first
SBSB Music Festival in 2013, is currently touring in support of her new album “Sun and Moon” a two-year recording project. Dena Woods, frontwoman of Dena Dena Dena and co-founder of Sounds By South Bend Music Fest describes her music as “ethereal and other-worldly. You can not only see the discipline in her playing but also, can’t help but be moved by the emotion in her songs. When Timbre contacted me to ask about playing South Bend in May, I saw this as a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of our very strong female-fronted bands, like Dog & Pony, fronted by powerful vocalist Melissa McQueen. In addition, I thought this would be a good way to get people excited about SBSB Music Festival the following weekend.” Woods sits on the 2015 SBSB Music Festival committee as a consultant rather than an organizer this year and is excited at the line up the SBSB Team has put together for the 2015 fest. “We have so many great
spaces, and we are very blessed with the growth and notoriety in our music scene,” Woods said. “I get contacted daily by touring bands asking to play in our city; we almost can’t accommodate the demand to play here. This year’s festival will balance local acts and touring acts in our favorite and familiar spaces as well as incorporating performances in new spaces not yet utilized for live music.” As part of this May 1 celebration preview concert, South Bend Brew Werks will host a pre- and post-concert party with an unveiling of a “We Love Local Music” playlist featuring original music by Michiana artists. Concertgoers can show their tickets before or after the concert at South Bend Brew Werks and be entered to win SBBW merchandise and prizes. “We are truly blessed with awesome local businesses that support this South Bend Music scene,” Woods said. “In addition to the support we’re receiving from South Bend Brew Werks, we’ve partnered
with sponsors Grass Roots Media and South Bend Music Exchange, who are helping make the show possible. We really do live in a very generous community.” The Sounds by South Bend Pre-festival Preview Show takes place on Friday, May 1, at The State Theater 214 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN 46601. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and music will start at 7 p.m., and all ages are welcome. There will be a $5 early bird general admission (ages 12 and up). Tickets will be available in limited quantities until April 30 and can be purchased at: https://timbre-dogandpony-denadenadena.eventbrite.com/ Tickets will be available at the door for $10, and 10 percent of all ticket sale proceeds will go to support the Sounds by South Bend Music Festival. Ernie LaPointe, Sitting Bull’s greatgrandson at Fort St. Joseph Museum
N
ILES, Mich. — On May 8 and 9, the Fort St. Joseph Museum will host Ernie LaPointe, the last surviving great-grandson of the legendary Lakota leader, Sitting Bull. LaPointe will present his film, "Sitting Bull’s Voice," at 7 p.m. Friday, May 8, in the meeting room of the Niles Fire Department building, 1345 E. Main Street, Niles, MI 49120. Admission for this event is $8 for adults, $4 for stu-
dents and may be paid at the door. There will be a question and answer time after the movie. A very special treat will be available during the movie event. For the first time in at least 25 years, the 13th pictograph in the museum collection will be on display. The pictograph is still in the original ledger that was used for the other 12 pictographs. Sitting Bull did not have time to complete the drawing before he gave the ledger to the
Quimby family. Twelve pictographs drawn by Sitting Bull will also be available for viewing at the museum. The pictographs were given by Sitting Bull to the Horace Quimby family, who settled in Niles and eventually donated them to the museum. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, LaPointe will be at the Fort St. Joseph Museum, to meet and greet visitors. There is no admission fee for
this event. LaPointe will be available to sign his book, Sitting Bull: His Life and Legacy as well as his DVD, Sitting Bull’s Voice. Both items will be available for purchase at the museum. The book is $20 and the DVD is also $20. The museum is located at 508 E. Main St., Niles, MI 49120. For more information visit the museum’s website at: www.nileshistorycenter. org

Make South Bend: A Place to Create By LISSA DIAZ

EXPLORE MICHIANA
PHOTO CONTEST
I C H I A N A — There’s a brand new place for artists, crafters and doit-yourselfers in the Michiana area. It’s called Make South Bend, a collaborative, co-working space designed encourage and support local makers to turn their passion into a living. The space offers unique, affordable classes — from things like watercolors, ceramics and oil painting to electrical soldering and 3D printmaking — with the belief that art should be accessible to everyone. The front of the shop serves as a gallery and gift shop, which sells locally-made goods. For owner Michelle FitzGerald, Make South Bend is a dream realized. Just a year ago, FitzGerald took the leap to quit her day job as a teacher to follow her passion to create. She started by making goods in her basement – wallets, jewelry, repurposed items and laser cut
art. She took up metal smithing, print making, sewing and learned vector imaging. She built a website and sold her art, both at art shows and online. But FitzGerald missed the community that working with other people provides. In her search to find a place that would offer support and encouragement to local artists and entrepreneurs, she was astonished to find that no such place existed in the area. That’s how the idea for Make South Bend was born. “It felt like our artists were secluded and neglected,” FitzGerald said. “I wanted to see a community of supportive, collaborating artists and makers who would encourage and challenge each other to be better. And I wanted the community to see and appreciate that work.” She sought the help of a Senior Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) mentor, set up a business plan, obtained a small business loan and found a storefront in the River Park

Beet the heat
O
ne of the key reasons I’m successful at maintaining a very healthy diet of mostly home-cooked meals is due to meal planning. When I have time, I cook as much as possible, prepping elements I can throw together in a variety of ways later in the week. When I have these spurts I try to make
sure I have some quinoa or millet cooked up. I bake a couple potatoes or yams, I make a big salad, and roast some nuts for a healthy onthe-go snack. Roasted beets are an integral part of my meal planning rotation. I try to buy beets almost every time I go to the store because they are just great in so

many recipes. Beets can be pickled, juiced, roasted, or boiled and are equally as delicious no matter what the preparation. They can spruce up a salad or even make a vegan cake naturally red and moist. While I’ve used both golden and traditional beets in baking, the most common way I prepare beets is roasting. I find cleaning the beets, brushing with
olive oil, wrapping in foil, and placing in the oven for about 45 minutes a really simple and low maintenance method. Once roasted, the skins usually peel right off too which is nice. Most of the time I either just make a simple beet salad with fresh parsley, seasoning salt, and a little olive oil, but sometimes I add the chopped and roasted beets to a hearty kale or field green salad. The recipe I’m sharing here is
About 8 cups beets, roasted and chopped 2 cups kale, torn into 1 inch pieces and massaged 1 cup yellow onion, diced 3 cloves minced garlic 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup fresh parsley chopped. ½ teaspoon Batti Becco seasoning salt Black pepper to taste Heat the oil in a nonstick skillet. Saute the onion until almost translucent, about 3 minutes, then add the garlic and cook until both are tender and starting to brown. Set aside and let cool. Toss the roasted chopped beets, kale, and all remaining ingredients in a large salad bowl until mixed well. Add a touch more salt if needed. Serve with asparagus, Brussels Sprouts, or greens and a side of blackened tofu or tempeh.

Add a new vegetable to spice up your salad kind of a combination of both of those. It keeps for several days and is a versatile side dish and snack.
