ICHIGAN CITY, Ind.—Whether you consider yourself a craft beer aficionado or simply an ingénue to the brew, you are sure to find a beer that suits your tastes at the Fourth Annual Blue Chip Brewfest. It will be taking place at the Blue Chip Casino from 1:30 to 5 p.m. on April 12. “With the craft beer craze that’s been happening for so many years, I just got an idea to bring a whole bunch of breweries together, serve some beer and just have people kind of walk around and taste them,” said Jack Elia, assistant general manager of Blue Chip Casino, Hotel and Spa. Although many people think of craft beers as being rather complex and heavy, the Brewfest is a popular event that caters to all palates. “I look at it as a little bit of an educational event, too,” Elia said.”People can taste all different types of beers from very light to very heavy, and it’s just grown and grown every year.” While breweries from all over the country will be represented, Midwestern breweries are slated to have the greatest presence. That will provide eventgoers with the opportunity to taste a variety of beers from their hometown favorites as well as providing ideas for new microbreweries they could frequent. Some local legends that will be represented include Greenbush from Sawyer, Bell’s from Kalamazoo, Shoreline from Michigan City, Drewry’s from South Bend, 18th Street from Gary and Round Barn from Baroda. Of course, heavy hitters like Miller, Coors and Pabst will be sending representatives, too. Alongside them will be newcomers to the scene, like Twisted K-8 of LaPorte and Burn ‘Em Brewing of Michigan City. In all, there will be more than 50 breweries participating in the event. “We’re going to have 54 booths—52 of those are breweries,” Elia said. “We’ll also have a store that shows you how to

brew your own beer, and then one of the brewmasters wrote a book, and he’s going to be signing copies of it at the Brewfest. We’re going to have close to 250 beers in all.” The event has grown so big that Blue Chip has had to add extra space to the venue this year. “We’re expecting about 2,000 people. This thing has grown so big over the years that this year we’re doing it in the Stardust Event Center, but we’ve also gone out and we’re putting an 80- by 280-foot tent out in the parking lot. You’ll be able to walk through both, sampling the different beers.” The folks at Blue Chip have also arranged several different events for eventgoers to choose from based on their level of interest in craft beers. “We’ve got three different pieces to the event. One is what we call our Brewmaster Luncheon. We’re going to have a four-course lunch paired with some of the beers from New Holland,” Elia explained. “Then we have a VIP event where we’re going to have eight different breweries that are going to serve sours, firkins and barrel-aged beers.” Finally, the general admission event will provide access to samples from all of the different breweries. Tickets can be purchased through www. bluechipcasino.com. Prices range from $99, which includes access to all three events, to $75 for the VIP and general admission events, to $40 for the general admission event alone. Each ticket level includes a variety of promotional items for guests to take home as well. In addition, there will be a silent auction for premium items such as a mini-fridge, coolers and other beer-themed collectibles, with proceeds benefitting the United Way of LaPorte County. Food will also be available for purchase. “Also, to be conscious of drinking and driving, we have a designated driver ticket that you can buy,” Elia added. “It’s only $15, and people will get a T-shirt, and then they’ll be able to drink some unique Leader photos/CRICKET NELSON sodas and waters all day long.”

ENTON HARBOR— Fans of Tempest will be excited to hear that the Celtic rock band will be returning to Southwest Michigan for the first time in two years. While this will be their debut at The Livery, they have played many concerts at The Acorn Theater in Three Oaks over the years. “We went by there for about eight years on our way from Chicago through to New York,” said Lief Sorbye, Tempest frontman, lead singer and electric mandolinist. “We built up a big following when we were playing at the Acorn, and we really hope that our fans will all come out to see us at The Livery.” For those who are unfamiliar with Tempest, the band is known for a hybrid of high-energy folk rock, fusing Irish reels, Scottish ballads, Norwegian influences and other world music elements. In fact, they are celebrating their 25th year with this tour, which currently includes 56 stops throughout the United States. “Right now, we have 56 dates booked for this tour, and there’s more coming,” Sorbye said. “For us, it’s a seasonal thing. We don’t tour that much from October through January. That’s when we kind of regroup, work on new material, plan new recordings and so forth. Of course, we still play on the West Coast during that time.” Based in San Francisco, Tempest keeps busy even when they are not touring. “We’ve done 15 studio albums, not including compilations and live albums,” Sorbye said. “We worked with three different record companies before we signed with Magna Carta back in 1995. So we’ve always been lucky that we’ve never had to pay for our own studio time. That’s probably one reason we’ve been able to stay around for so long.” While Sorbye and Cubanborn drummer Adolfo Lazo have formed the core of Tempest for the last 25 years, the band’s line-up has included a variety of musicians over the years. “I’ve been really lucky to play with a lot of great musicians,” Sorbye said. “To have a band for 25 years is a pretty big accom-

New blood always gives us more energy on stage.” That “new blood” currently includes San Francisco fiddler Kathy Buys, electric bass player Vince Lucchesi and Colorado-born guitarist Gregory Jones. Sorbye has been very happy with the results of the collaboration. “People can expect a lot of energy on stage from us. It’s a high-spirited, fun combination of folk and rock,” Sorbye said. “Even when the venue has theater seating, people get up and dance in the aisles. It’ll be a really fun time.” Sorbye and his bandmates work hard to put on shows that will appeal to all sorts of audience members. “Our music is rooted in that old, folk imagery even though it’s a rock and roll
format,” Sorbye said. “So, we’re not just limited to young people or old people, folk people or rock people. It appeals to everybody.” Whether concert-goers have seen Tempest live or not, Sorbye plans to put on a show that they will remember for a long time. “If they are fans of the band, they can expect some big surprises on stage,” Sorbye said. “We’ll be playing some older material that goes back to the very beginning of the band. Since it’s our 25th Anniversary concert, we want to make it a special event.” However, Tempest also plans to bring out some of their new material as well. “You’ve got to keep the creative juices flowing and put new stuff on the plate. It’s something very cozy to go to a concert and hear all of the songs you love,” Sorbye said. “But, on every
tour, we try to bring out brand new material, as well as to rotate some of the old favorites that our fans want to hear.” Playing new material on stage is one of the ways that Tempest is able to tour so heavily and still record new music during their off months. “We’re a live band first. By playing them night after night, the songs come alive on stage in front of our audiences,” Sorbye explained. “That way, the audience is also a part of the process.” After playing a show in Downers Grove, Ill. on April 5, Tempest will take the stage at The Livery, located at 190 5th St., at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 6. Step back in time Paris Soda Shop opens April 4 By JILL McCAUGHAN jill.mccaughan @leaderpub.com

ILES—Elaine Tughan was a sales rep selling designer fabrics on the road when she first found the Paris Soda Shop, and she was immediately taken with its quaint location at 220 E. Main St. in Niles. Unhappy with a post-9/11 downturn in sales, she was looking for something new. What she found was something old. “I found this building in ‘03,” Tughan recalled. “My intent was to open up a coffee shop. And then, I heard the history of the old Paris, and I kept on hearing stories:‘My first kiss was at the Paris.’ ‘I used to hold hands in the booths at the Paris.’ ‘We hung out there after school every day.’” In fact, the Paris has had a long history in Niles, dating back to 1910 when James Patterson opened the first Paris Candy Shop on E. Main. According to the Fort St. Joseph Museum, Patterson — also a newcomer to town — added a soda bar a few years later. Some time after opening a second shop at 220 E. Main in the 1930s, the Patterson family relocated the fountain along with elaborate furnishings to the second shop. Although the soda shop’s furnishings had been purchased and relocated by an Arkansas firm many
years before Elaine came along, she loved the idea of restoring a Niles landmark. “I thought, ‘Every small town needs an old-fashioned soda bar,’” Tughan said. “And that very night, believe it or not, I went on eBay and found this whole thing. This whole soda bar. It’s an actual 1940s soda bar, and I had to go to Waterbury Conn. and pull it back. So, it was meant to be.” The next four years saw an extensive renovation of the shop’s interior, with Tughan tearing off layers of plaster to expose the old brick walls. She was finally ready to open the soda shop and restaurant in 2007. Since then, Tughan has developed quite a fan base as well as a nickname: “The Quiche Queen of Niles.” “I’m known for several different things—my quiche, my chicken salad. Of course we do ice cream— malts, shakes, sundaes. Everything is hand-dipped,” Tughan said. “And people love the fact that we can make phosphates, back like they did in the ‘40s out of our gooseneck fountain.” In keeping with the nostalgic atmosphere, the Paris serves up its sandwiches in old-fashioned lunchboxes. “And, when you get a gift certificate, it comes in a little, mini lunchbox,” Tughan added. “The lunchboxes are also available for purchase at a very reasonable price of $8.”

The historic Paris Soda Shop is reopening for the season in Niles. Nostalgic candies, including wax lips, candy dots and large lollipops are also for sale. Although the emphasis in the Paris is definitely on a sweet, nostalgic view of the past, Tughan has also made some changes for the 2014 season, including new additions to the menu. “I’ve added 15 new items to the menu, and I’ve lowered my prices,” Tughan said. “I just expanded more of my menu, based on items we already had in-house. I’ve expanded my
wraps, and I’m doing several different types of burgers now.” Regulars to the Paris will not be disappointed because Tughan has kept all of the old favorites on the menu alongside her new offerings. Those include the authentic Coney dogs, the Paris Club and her famous chicken salad. Another new event that occurred in 2014 was that Tughan decided to close down the shop for two months this winter in order to spend time with her aging parents. Now,
however, with the arrival of spring, Tughan is back in Niles, readying the Paris for an opening day of April 4. Although Tughan hasn’t completely settled on business hours for the coming season, she is certain that she’ll have the shop open at 11 a.m. on most days, and it should be open every day of the week. ENTON HARBOR— It started out as simply an idea tossed around between friends after a game of golf. Soon though, that idea will become a reality as Ray’s on the Green opens its doors within the Berrien Hills Golf Club. The grand opening will take place on April 7. “Two and a half years ago, in Sept. of 2011, Ray and I were sitting, having a beer on the deck after Dr. Kasewurm’s annual golf outing,” recalled Dave Vonk, general manager of the golf club. “We’d known each other for a couple years before that, and Ray said, ‘If there are ever any opportunities out here, let me know.’” That opportunity arose in the fall of 2013, and the partnership between Ray Mays and the Berrien Hills Golf Club began. “It just got to be the perfect time for Ray, and it got to be the perfect time for

tial in all of the amenities that the Berrien Hills Golf Club boasts. “I really want this to compete with the yacht clubs and all of the other clubs around here” Mays said. “It’s not just a golf club any more. It’s a venue. We’ve got a pool, and we’ve got potential for anything that any other venue has.” The veteran restaurateur is looking forward to his new role as the owner of the eatery, and he’s received a lot of support from both family and friends in this venture. “I was in charge at both the Pumphouse and the Friendly Tavern, but this is the first time that it’s mine,” Mays said. “My best friend since kindergarten is a silent partner, and he encouraged me to do this project, so here I am.” Mays has also brought in Chris Waggoner and her company, Sweet Dreams Baked Goods, as the in-
house bakery, which will supply all of the breads, cakes and pastries for the restaurant.

It was the bread—the rolls. They are the yeast rolls that my grandma used to make.” While Waggoner learned to bake from her grandmother, she has developed many of her own recipes for the delicious and beautiful desserts that she has been

of course, on the deck. If the weather is bad, we will push the dining out here,” Mays said, referring to the club’s spacious ballroom. Along with the barroom, the lower level of the club has received a lot of attention. “The downstairs room has been totally recarpeted,” Vonk said. “We’ll serve meals down there, and we maintained the bank below the deck. It’s really a special view.” The lower level will also be available for private parties, providing space for about 80 guests. While the restaurant, located at 690 W. Napier Ave., will be open for business starting on April 7, Anne Vonk, event coordinator for the club, noted that there is a special event planned for April. “We’re going to have a wonderful buffet on Easter Sunday with two seatings. There will be crab legs and prime rib and turkey and just everything. You name it, it’s going to be there,” Anne said. Reservations can be made by calling the club at (269) 925-9002. As the partnership matures and the day of the grand opening approaches, the excitement is palpable, and the hopes are high. “I have all the confidence in the world in Ray, and I think he will succeed in getting this place hopping,” Dave Vonk said. “Ray’s been a pleasure to work with, and we’re happy to have him. Get on the collard green bandwagon
C
ollard greens are one of my top five favorite foods. They are excellent for you, easy to cook with, delicious, and work in a variety of recipes. Recent studies actually show that of all the cruciferous foods, collards may have the greatest cholesterol lowering principles. This means they beat out kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. That’s some pretty tough competition! They are also extremely high in vita-

Collards are by far my preferred greens to cook with. They are less bitter than kale and chard, and they hold up better in the cooking process. Other greens tend to wilt immediately,while collard greens take a bit longer to cook and don’t really fall limp the way other greens do. Further, since they aren’t bitter they Salad can be

Cook's Note: To prep collard greens in this fashion, remove the rib as you would with kale or chard (save the ribs for vegetable stock or sautee). OUTH BEND, IND.— The Potawatomi Zoo opened its gates for another season on March 28, providing visitors with an interesting place to get out and enjoy the coming of spring. Although the trees were bare and the grass was still more brown than green on opening day, it’s not hard to imagine how beautiful the setting will be as buds start to appear on branches and everything begins to green up. Paths winding throughout the zoo’s 23 acres provide visitors with the opportunity to stroll past a wide variety of habitats in Indiana’s oldest zoo. Although the zoo originated simply as a duck pond in 1902, it is now home to roughly 400 different species of animals. According to Rachel
Rogers, special events and membership coordinator at the zoo, visitor favorites include the Amur leopards and the white Bengal tiger. While the late coming of spring has kept a number of species indoors longer than usual, those big cats and many other animals are already out in areas where visitors can enjoy watching them. Kangaroos, wallabies, prairie dogs, takins and camels are just some of the animals that have ventured out to welcome spring, and many more will soon be joining them. The zoo has undergone many changes over the last century, and more changes are taking place as the zoo gears up for another season. “Guests will see some subtle changes around the zoo,” Rogers said. “We have a more streamlined entrance experience where guests can purchase all of the tickets to the attractions along with their entry fee. We’ll still have the station-

the train is now running, the butterfly exhibit will not be open until the weather warms up more. “The butterfly exhibit will be open from Memorial
Day through Labor Day weekend,” Rogers explained. “The butterflies are all tropical — none are native — so they are sensitive to the colder weather.” The petting zoo area, known as the Zoo Farm, will also open for Memorial Day weekend, offering pony rides and other activities, but some of those animals are already outside waiting to greet guests as well. Llamas, goats and peacocks can all be seen up close in that area of the zoo. Zoo personnel are also working on a new home for the red pandas. “We’ve started building a new red panda exhibit. It should be completed by mid- to late April, depending on the weather,” Rogers said. “We have a nice red panda family of two males and one female that people love to visit.” Common carp and Canada geese also eagerly await visitors, who can feed them with treats from vending machines placed along the banks of a stream
that winds through the zoo. Indoor exhibits are open now, featuring a variety of bats, reptiles and primates, including golden lion tamarins. Other animals, like chimpanzees and flamingos, can be viewed by guests through large windows. The gift shop is also open, fully stocked with all sorts or souvenirs, including stuffed animals and educational toys. With an annual attendance of more than 200,000 visitors, the Potawatomi Zoo is one of South Bend’s largest attractions, second only to Notre Dame University. As such, its paths will soon be filled with visitors from across the country. However, local residents have the opportunity to beat the crowds that summer will bring, and visiting the zoo can be a leisurely, enjoyable way to get out in nature and experience the springtime.

“I think changes in lifestyle are invigorating. You’re doing the same thing over and over for years, and you get tired, and you just take it for granted that you can do it. It becomes easy after a while,” Harvey said. “But then, when you stop that and go onto something else, it invigorates you, and you want to learn how to do it, and you get into it. Even at 70 years old, it still interests

you to go on and do something else.” It seems that Harvey’s life has been an exercise in change and transformation. “I was 14 when my family came over from England. My folks settled in Peoria, Ill. After I got out of high school, I went into the army for three years, and when I got back, I moved to Chicago and went to art school,” Harvey recalled. “Then, when I graduated, I went back to Peoria for a year or two, and I met my wife there. Then, we both moved back to Chicago, and we were there for about 35 years. We came over here to New Buffalo about 20 years ago.” Upon arriving in Michigan in 1993, the Harveys decided to purchase a 1948 Bauhaus-style home at 33 Barton St., transforming it into a bed and breakfast. “It’s a different style of building,” Harvey said. “Not a lot of people look at this building and understand it.” Working from the modern style of the home, the Harveys decided to present
it as the first 1950s-themed bed and breakfast. However, after seven years in the hospitality industry, they decided that they were again ready for a change. It was then that they opened their gallery, and Harvey began to paint once again in earnest. “I didn’t do a lot of art while we owned the B&B. It was very demanding,” Harvey explained. “I used to paint when I was in Chicago, but I was always so busy doing graphic design that I never really had the time to do much of it.” Freed from the demands of his earlier careers, Harvey was able to focus more on his art, reaching back to the training he received while he was a student at Chicago’s American Academy of Art and the School of the Art Institute. “When I went to art school, we were taught that everything had to be realistic,” Harvey explained. “At the Art Institute, it was a lot more free than at the American Academy of Art, but even at the Art Institute, in the painting classes, they tried to make you learn how

Roger Harvey’s beautiful landscapes can be viewed and purchased at the Roger Harvey ART Gallery, located within a unique Bauhausstyle building in New Buffalo. to paint before you started abstracting things.” Harvey chose to apply those techniques to the study of landscapes, for which he found ample inspiration in southwestern Michigan. “They’re pretty traditional landscapes, maybe a little more colorful than what one would think of in traditional landscapes, but they’re very traditional, and that comes from my training,” Harvey said. Although Harvey’s large acrylic landscapes are unique, he was both surprised and inspired to learn that another painter had a somewhat similar vision. “I started painting, and I was just painting without looking at what anyone else was doing, and a friend of mine said to me that I painted like a guy called Wolf

Kahn, and I had never heard of him,” Harvey said. “So, I immediately looked him up on the internet and found that he had some books, and I went and searched and got his books. “I admire his painting a lot. In some ways, I do paint a lot like him,” Harvey said. “They’re more abstract than mine. Mine are perhaps a little more realistic, but his colors have influenced me probably more than anything else.” While landscapes are a common subject for Harvey, he has branched out into other areas as well. “I’ve done portraits, and I do other things, like these whimsical little faces, sort of based on African masks. They’re just found-object masks,” Harvey said. “ I also make jewelry out of found objects.” Although the Roger Harvey ART Gallery remains open and Harvey continues to paint, he and his wife are now looking to the next chapter in their lives. They are putting the 3,500-square foot building on the market, unsure of what the future holds. “We may move to California, or we may stay in the area,” Harvey said. “We haven’t quite decided yet.” Wherever the Harveys’ journey takes them next, it seems certain that Roger will find subjects for his art. While admission is $8.50 for adults, $6.50 for children ages 3 to 14, $6.50 for seniors 62 and over, and free for children 2 and under, area residents may want to consider purchasing a membership, which will allow them to visit the zoo free of charge anytime. Members are also invited to a special members-only picnic and
are admitted to Zoo Boo, the annual three-day Halloween event, for free. “We have special events throughout the year, including a wine tasting in June, the Grape Escape, and the Zoo Brew, a beer tasting event in the fall,” Rogers added.
