Part 2: Midway draws musicians
M
I S H AWA K A , Ind. — I ntrigued by the inquiry of a band wanting to practice at the Midway, Albertina and her sister entertained the idea of developing a more music-oriented venue. Albertina offered the band a spot to play on a regular basis and, soon, word of mouth led other musicians to her door. Though blues has always been the focus, she has played host to a variety of musicians, both traveling and local. She speaks fondly of South Bend drummer Billy “Stix” Nicks, who is as legendary for his charming, humble personality as he is for his skill on the drums. He plays the venue regularly, both with blues and jazz bands, as well as with his renowned Motown Machine band. Though she and her daughter have been known to seek out musicians by attending concerts and festivals, many bands reach out to her to play the venue. She has also found support in the local music culture, with regular references from WVPE's Ole' Harv on the weekly Blues Revue and from local music writers such as Andy Hughes. She told me the tale of a local photographer who once came in and politely asked permission to take photos during the performances. He came in days later with a handful of photos for Albertina. After returning with his camera at the next concert, Albertina asked him if he planned to continue every week. “He said to me ‘if you'll let me.’”

COLUMNIST
Justin Flagel Of course, Albertina did and now the walls of the venue are covered in photographs of past performances and legendary appearances. The pictures stretch across The Midway, lending a physical representation to the incredible
history of the tavern. Together, she and I sorted through nearly a century of memorabilia, including autographs, pictures and promotional documents. She even brought out intact licenses and liquor permits dating back to the 1930s. Poring over the collection, I could not help but consider the need for a local music museum. Her thoughts, though, are focused on the future and the ongoing happenings at The Midway. “When you're in a small place like this, you don't usually pay much attention to the world. You know it's there and you know there are a lot of changes in the world, but you just hope you can
keep going,” she said. She points to the changes around her, from competition in other local nightlife options to a younger generation unaware of the music and the venue itself. “It’s amazing that this place is still alive,” she said. She credits The Midway’s longevity to the foundation created by her mother, to the quality of musicians desiring to play the venue, and to the core group of customers who regularly visit. She has no plans to stop and is hoping to instill an appreciation for the music in audiences going forward,

The perfect pairing Chef partners with wine experts for culinary adventure
B
ERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. — Free Run Cellars is creating an enhanced customer experience with an innovative paired tasting adventure at its completely renovated tasting room. Guests can delight in delicious food pairings from Culinary Director Ryan Thornburg alongside small batch wines and spirits, consistently rated among the best in the area. Not overcrowded or hurried and under the guidance of a personal tasting consultant, guests can release their worries and relish in this on-trend experience. How it works Guests will be led through a 45-minute tasting of four of Free Run’s preselected wines (2 oz. pours) or spirits, each carefully paired with seasonal gourmet creations (Thornburg created & updated monthly) using locally sourced ingredients designed to bring out the finest flavors of each. "This year marks our 10th anniversary and we wanted to offer something entirely new, something that could elevate both the flavors and the experience for our guests,” said Nicole Moersch, marketing director. “We’re happy to create a destination designed specifically for wine and food lovers here in beautiful and bountiful Southwest Michigan. Many don’t realize we’re located in the second most agriculturally diverse area in the U.S. so tapping into this beyond winemaking has us over the moon." Guests (individuals, couples and groups) are encouraged to schedule their visit online at FreeRunCellars.com. The option is available to sit at custom made
high-top tables (seating up to eight people) or nestled in cozy bench seating (seating up to 12 people). Walk-ins will be happily accommodated based on availability. All guests, whether experiencing a tasting or not, are welcome to open a bottle and relax on the outdoor patio nestled among the vineyards and overlooking Free Run’s beautiful pond. Nosh options such as a charcuterie plate will also be available for enjoying outside. About Culinary Director Ryan Thornburg Southwest Michigan is no stranger to the cooking talents of Free Run’s new Culinary Director Ryan Thornburg. He first hit the culinary scene in the 1990s at Caffe Tosi as Lead Chef and then went on to serve as executive chef at Tosi’s restaurant for seven years as well as Bistro on the Boulevard for another seven years. T hornburg and his wife Julie established Thornburg & Co. in 2011 where they took advantage of all the local produce that Berrien County has to offer. They produced locally made fruit jams, barrel aged syrups and vinegars, varietal honey and other chef driven retail products. The Moersch family have been longtime fans of Thornburg’s culinary skills so they created a position for him in 2016 as culinary director for Free Run Cellars as well as at their Round Barn Public House restaurant. “I’m grateful for this exciting opportunity,” Thornburg said. “In regards to Free Run Cellars, the new food pairing menus will each have a locally sourced element that will pair perfectly with the wine and elevate the overall tasting experience.
The most successful food and wine pairings feature complementary components, such as our Dry Riesling with a mangocrab stack & wasabi mayo or the Lake Michigan Shore Syrah with a locally sourced smoked duck breast & whipped goat cheese on puff pastry.”
Free Run Cellars will be open Friday through Sunday, beginning Friday, July 8, 2016. Like their Facebook page to stay abreast of the exciting details as they unfold. Be on the lookout too for a new website later this summer which will have the added feature of a wine shop so products can be ordered online and shipped.

Art icon in the spotlight ARS Gallery to feature 'John D. Wilson: The Renaissance Man'
B
enton Harbor, Mich. — From 6 to 8 p.m. May 13, ARS Gallery in Benton Harbor will host a reception for a new exhibition, “John D. Wilson: The Renaissance Man.” The exhibition will celebrate Wilson’s role in bringing worldrenowned artists to southwest Michigan through the Lakeside Center for the Arts, and in launching the Chicago International Art Exposition, the first art fair of its kind in North America. ARS Arts & Culture Center will display prints and posters representing the Expo from 1980 to 1994, including works by Robert Motherwell and Ed Paschke. The exhibition is guest curated by John D. Wilson’s son, Jon Wilson. Small bites, wine, and refreshments will be served at the event. “Mr. Wilson is a living legend who has accomplished great things in the art world throughout his life, and leaves a template and legacy for others to create and build,” said Anna Russo-Sieber of ARS Gallery. An internationally known art dealer and printmaker, Wilson made his home base at the Lakeside Inn in Lakeside, Michigan, where he converted a large building behind the

inn into studio space to house the Lakeside Center for the Arts. Through a unique exchange program at the height of the Cold War, Wilson provided artists from around the world with the opportunity to spend the summer at the Lakeside Center for the Arts, creating a cultural destination in southwest Michigan. Wilson’s organization, the Lakeside Group, premiered Chicago International Art Exposition at Navy Pier in 1980. Over the years, the
Expo was heralded as the nation’s leading art fair and attracted 80 dealers and 10,000 visitors to Chicago. The show also highlighted the potential of Navy Pier, which resulted in the venue’s rehabilitation. A new book about Wilson’s conception and fulfillment of the Expo is scheduled for release later this summer at ARS Gallery, and it will include tributes from the many friends Wilson has made in the art world over the years, including Thomas McCormack, owner of the Thomas McCormack Gallery in Chicago’s West Loop, who cites Wilson as a mentor and friend for more than 30 years. “From the moment I met John Wilson I could see the intensity with which he attacks life,” said John Sauvé, an artist and arts educator who has worked with Wilson over the past six years. “John says his ideas out loud, accomplished most of them at least once, and speaks with determination and passion every time he presents something new.” “John D. Wilson: The Renaissance Man” will be on display at ARS Gallery through mid-July. For more information, call ARS Gallery at (269) 277-5090, or visit www.annarussoart.com.

Celebrating a
legend
Andrew Fisher Quartet to play Stevie Wonder tribute concert
B
By Kelsey Hammon
ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — When Andrew Fisher was growing up, if songs like “Higher Ground” or “I Wish” came on the radio, it wasn’t uncommon for his family to stop what they were doing and dance. These memories are perhaps why Fisher’s love for Stevie Wonder started at such an early age. Those early years dancing and singing to the R&B icon helped foster a love of lyrics that are able to convey honest human emotion, which Fisher uses as the vocalist for the neo soul, R&B, jazz and funk band the Andrew Fisher Quartet. This Friday, the music legend that made his family dance turns 66 years old. To celebrate Wonder’s legacy and recognize the music that has inspired them since their youth, the AFQ will play a tribute concert — and what better way to pay tribute to Stevie Wonder than with the gift of music? The concert will start at 7 p.m., Sunday at The Livery, 190 Fifth St. in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Admission is free and there is no cover charge to attend. “Stevie Wonder wrote very personal lyrics,” Fisher said. “That’s the thing about Stevie Wonder — the lyrics are so real is the best way to put it. It is a human perspective on life, love and everything in between.” In addition to Fisher, AFQ includes drummer Eric Oliphant of South Haven, Michigan; keyboardist Bruce Anderson of Benton Harbor and bassist Dustin Lowe of Three Oaks. all of whom grew up listening to Wonder as young musicians. While the band typically peppers Wonder numbers into their regular jazz or jam sessions, creating a tribute to Wonder offered a chance for the band to further explore the sound of their idol and have a blast on stage playing the tunes they have always loved. But putting together a tribute for Wonder posed one interesting challenge: How do you represent a singer’s legacy as diverse as Wonder’s in a single set? For this concert, the members of AFQ dug deep into exploring all eras of Wonder’s music.
Photo by Joshua Nowicki “Up until now I never realized that his work as a musician went back that far,” Fisher said. Given that Wonder has been writing and creating songs since he was 11 years old, the band had an immense amount of material to choose from. This Sunday, listeners can expect to hear a sample of all eras of Stevie Wonder. Starting with some of the pieces from his childhood days as “Little Stevie” to music from his Motown and funk days to his lesser known reggae tunes and everything in between, and of course, one of the band’s long time favorites “I Wish.” For this concert specially, the band has also invited several guest musicians to join the jam. And though they might not have believed it possible at first, exploring Wonder’s music made the band love Wonder’s sound even more. For his part, drummer Eric Oliphant found that the tribute project gave him a chance to further learn from

Wonder’s brilliance as a musician. Fisher said that as Oliphant worked on putting together charts for the show he was able to dissect the sound he too had grown up with and the opportunity aided the drummer’s growth as a musician. Another thing that listeners can expect Sunday is lots of improvisation and fun with the sound. A trait AFQ identifies as quintessential Wonder is the ability to play songs created to never sound exactly the same. This provides an opportunity to recreate some of Wonder’s work in a voice that is all their own. “The best aspect of Stevie Wonder is that he left almost all of his music open for improvisation and soloing, allowing himself and others to play in the moment, which is what we are all about,” Fisher said. And if you’ve ever listened to AFQ, a band whose sound is traditionally steeped in neo soul, R&B, jazz and

funk roots then you know they are truly experts at this. When asked what his reaction would be if Wonder happened to drop by The Livery for his own tribute concert, Fisher’s voice had a hint of “Superstition.” “I will pass out. There is no way that I would be able to maintain consciousness,” Fisher said with a laugh. “That would be insane.” Fisher’s final hope for the tribute concert is that the band will also have the opportunity to inspire others to find a passion for Stevie’s music. The Livery’s family atmosphere allows for a wide age range of listeners and Fisher said he hopes that just as Stevie has inspired his own life as a musician that someone else out there will feel inspired too. “That's the power of Stevie Wonder,” Fisher said. “Even still teaching us how to be better artists and musicians.”
