EW BUFFALO— You may not ever have the opportunity to walk among the treetops of the cloud forests in Costa Rica, but thanks to cooperation between Berrien County and the Pokagon Fund, a very similar experience is now available right in your own backyard. “We’re all excited,” said County Commissioner Andrew Vavra. “The whole county should be excited, and our visitors should be excited because it’s a great destination!” With the May 8 opening of the Galien River Park, residents and visitors to Berrien County can now walk out over the river valley just north of New Buffalo, taking in a view of the marshlands and woods that really is striking. “It’s been a long time coming because the property was bought in 2001, and there have been other priorities for funding since then,” explained Commissioner Vavra. “But, anything that’s great is worth the wait. And, I think that anyone who goes to the park now will find out how great it is.” Easy to access from U.S. 12, the entrance to the park is located directly across the road from the New Buffalo Township
Hall at 17425 Red Arrow Highway. Currently, admission to the park is free. “There will be no entry fee,” Vavra said. “You won’t have to have a county park pass until phase two comes in—when a building or staff is there. Then, it will be part of the park system’s permit fee structure.” Upon arriving at the park, visitors will find a small parking area surrounded by tall deciduous trees. A gravel chip path leads springtime visitors past patches of May apples and violets growing under the canopy. Several unpaved paths branch off into the woods, allowing visitors to choose “the road less travelled” if that’s what they prefer. However, following the gravel path will soon bring visitors to a fork. While the right side of the path will eventually take visitors down a winding path to the Marsh Boardwalk and the River Viewing and Fishing Platform, that portion of the path has not yet been completed. However, taking the path to the left will provide visitors with access to the Leader photos/JILL McCAUGHAN 300-foot-long Canopy Walkway that leads to the The Marsh Boardwalk provides visitors with 60-foot-high Marsh the opportunity to walk among the marshland Overlook Tower. You get out into through the marshland and secure, and you come out the open, and it makes you up alongside the riverbank. from the tree, and then all feel like a part of the trees,”
Vavra said. From the Marsh Overlook Tower, visitors can look down upon the natural beauty and perhaps see some of the wildlife that calls that portion of the Galien River its home. “It’s a way to get out,” Vavra said. “It’s a way to get down to the river, and, also it’s a way to get up where the birds are in that skyway walk.” Vavra encourages all visitors to make use of the Canopy Walkway, even if they are concerned with the height of the tower. “Personally, I’m a little cautious with heights, but myself going on it, I had no problem,” Vavra said. “So, a lot of folks that may feel that it’s a little high for them—I would suggest that they go out and try it for themselves.” While the park is still under construction, many visitors are already taking advantage of the new opportunity to get out and reconnect with nature in a unique way. “It’s fabulous. I think it’s just great that the Tribe and other people threw in the money and got grants to build a wonderful thing like this,” said John Burke, who has a home on Dewey Lake. “It looks gorgeous. I hope they can keep it this way. It is really cool!” While the park is already receiving rave reviews from visitors like Burke, the county has plans
to make it even better when the second phase of the project begins at an undetermined point in the future. “There’s a couple things I would like to see happen in phase two,” Vavra said. “I would like to see an interpretive center that gives visitors an educational appreciation of the site— of the significance of a Great Lakes marsh, the significance of the Galien River, and what actually inhabits it.” Vavra would also like to see an emphasis on the way the site was used by Native Americans. “Obviously, the site was important to them, with the water and the fishery, and with the presence and reestablishment of the Pokagon tribe’s influence in that southwest area, I think we can reach out to them and provide educational opportunities so people can better understand Native Americans and their history,” Vavra said. “It’s a perfect fit for this park, and that’s what I would envision.” As spring progresses, more leaves form on trees, and more wildlife become comfortable with the new visitors in their midst, the Galien River Park will surely provide many more opportunities for visitors to get out and appreciate the natural beauty of Berrien County and its river systems.

ISTER LAKES— “Eclectic, unusual, innovative.” All of these words come to mind upon speaking with Jim Wilcox and viewing the range of his artwork. Now, with the opening of his New Rock School of Aesthetics this Memorial Day weekend, members of the public will have the chance to form their own impressions of this artist and his work. “I grew up in the era of Monty Python and the Flying Circus, and I wanted to come up with an unusual name,” Wilcox explained. “It’s not really a school, but you can see it as a school, like a school of fish or a school of thought. Everybody has a ‘gallery,’ so I thought, I’d like to have a ‘school.’” Born in West Chester, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, Wilcox was also influenced by the artschool bands of the 1960s and 1970s. “My decision to become an artist was really based on music. All of those artschool bands were really

If you want to be an artist, just do it.’ That’s probably why I stuck ‘rock’ in the title of the school, too.” For Wilcox, rock ‘n’ roll had the same impact on the art world as the Italian
Renaissance. “There were so many artists working at the same time in so many areas, and it was selected by kids who had money to spend on that art—on the music. Critical acclaim be damned.” Working from that same populist philosophy, Wilcox appreciates the movement behind the Grand Rapids’ Art Prize, in which he has participated twice. “The public was never in the position to say ‘I like this,’ when it comes to art, and that’s what DeVos did up in Grand Rapids, and we have the technology to do that now. I love stuff like that!” explained Wilcox. “Art Prize is the best thing that’s happened
to art in a long time.” Trained in sculpture at the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of Illinois, Wilcox earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. One of Wilcox’s own pieces that draws upon his artistic training as well as his roots in rock and his populist philosophy is the “Elvis Grotto: Mobile Unit,” which, when switched on, plays several Elvis songs. “The Elvis Grotto project came out of my time as a teaching assistant at Columbia College in Chicago. The class was called ‘The Artist and the Landscape,” and it was a travelling class. We trav-
elled all over the Midwest, and we looked at all of these grottos that the priests had built and people would decorate them,” Wilcox recalled. “For the final project for the class, I decided to do a project that went with that, and I had a bust of Elvis that I had been making in college, so I decided to use that to make an Elvis Grotto,” Wilcox said. One of his more popular pieces, the “Elvis Grotto” will be the showpiece at his upcoming gallery opening. “It’s wonderful fun. People have a visceral reaction to it,” Wilcox said. “I turn it on, and people just start dancing.” Other more traditional pieces of Wilcox’s work will also be on display and for sale. Using a technique that he has developed himself through trial and error over many years, Wilcox creates relief sculptures which he casts in a superfine, white concrete mix called ‘polymerized gypsum.’ He then paints them with crushed pastels, sprays them down with Krylon
Clear, and then adds more layers of crushed pastel. The result is a unique, multi-dimensional panel that has both the attributes of a painting and a sculpture. While so much more could be said of Wilcox’s work and his artistic journey—which included owning a studio in Chicago’s Spice Factory, creating rocks and trees for museum displays—including Epcot Center, and making commission pieces including one of the famous Chicago cows, the best thing to do to get to know Wilcox and his special brand of art would be to go to the gallery opening and meet him for yourself. Wilcox’s gallery opening will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 24 at his restored Sister Lakes cottage and studio, located at the junction of 95th and County Rd. 690, across the street from the Driftwood. Brian Slocum of Schwann’s will be serving appetizers, and parking will be available at the nearby Legacy bar. The gallery can be reached at (269) 282-6934.

spent the night with my parents in Michigan last Satur-day night. When I came downstairs on Mother's Day morning, my mom had coffee and a recipe ready for me. One of my very favorite things to do is work in the kitchen with my mom, so I was thrilled that she wanted to start her Mother's Day baking with her only daughter. She had actually planned on starting the muffins before I got up, but the recipe was for traditional muffins, and she couldn’t find her EngerG Egg Replacer powder. She was lost as to how to make the muffins without it. I really value egg replacer, and think it’s important to keep around, especially if you’re new to vegan baking like my mom. However, it actually is not my favorite egg substitute, especially for muffins and breakfast breads. I actually use it more for binding breading and seasoning to tofu and the like. I explained to my mom that all we needed to do was add extra bananas or

some applesauce to make up for the moisture the egg was providing. This recipe was already designed to be a healthier version of traditional muffins, calling for cholesterolfree vegetable oil rather than butter, and applesauce rather than lots of eggs and sugar. I used the recipe as a base, made about four simple changes and voila, a simple, delicious brunch recipe with a healthy twist. Changing a couple ingredients is a

really easy way for those of you at home to health-up or veganize some of your favorite breakfast bakedgoods recipes. In our case, as in most novice vegan baking, the egg was the only stumper. I explained to my mom that an average egg equals about a ¼ cup of moisture, so if you’re making sweet bread, muffins, or even some types of cake, all you have to do is add a ¼ cup of bananas, applesauce, or soy milk. 1. In a large mixing bowl, or the bowl of an electric mixer, stir together the bananas, vanilla, applesauce, maple syrup, and oil. Blend well with a wire whisk or the whisk attachment. 2. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and sea salt. When fully combined, slowly beat into the wet ingredients until just moistened. Fold in the nuts. 3. Preheat oven to 325. Line muffin tin with cupcake papers, or spray with nonstick, natural baking spray. These muffins don’t rise much, so you can fill the cups nearly full. There should be exactly enough batter for a dozen muffins. 4. Bake for about 30 minutes, depending on your oven, or until golden brown on top and a cake tester or toothpick comes out of the center clean. 5. errien springs— For those who love both art and wine, the 11th Annual Art and Wine Festival at Lemon Creek Winery will be a “can’t miss” event on Memorial Day Weekend. It will take place from 12 to 6
p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25. With 30 years of history as a winery and 150 years of grape and fruit growing experience, Lemon Creek Winery is a perfect place to sample the fruits of southwest Michigan’s clay loam hills. “At the Art and Wine Festival, we do a wine tasting,” said Kelsey Jakeway,
a wine server at Lemon Creek Winery. “It’s $5, and you get five samples. Then, you can choose your favorite and buy a bottle if you want to and sit outside and enjoy it.” Lemon Creek Winery will be offering wine lovers the chance to sample from over 25 different wines. The grounds of the winery will also provide a scenic

Live music will provide further ambiance for guests as they sample the wines and take in the scenery. “Usually, we’ll have an acoustic guitarist or something like that,” Jakeway said. Lemon Creek will also
be providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a taste of summer with grilled foods available for purchase. “We’ll be cooking burger, brats, and things like that,” Jakeway said. Along with wine, music and food, an array of artists from around the region will be displaying and selling their creations.

Quartet brings smooth jazz sounds By JILL McCAUGHAN jill.mccaughan @leaderpub.com

ENTON HARBOR— Whether you are a jazz aficionado or a jazz naïf, the Chris Greene Quartet will be playing some music for you to appreciate when they take the stage at The Livery at 8 p.m. on May 17. “I appreciate it when there are people in the audience who really know about the history of the music, but the majority of the people in the audience are usually people who just want to enjoy some music—who just want to be entertained at the end of a long day at work,” said saxophonist and composer, Chris Greene. However, no matter what the composition of the crowd, the Evanston, Illinois-based musician wants to provide a show that music-lovers all along the spectrum can enjoy.
“There are a lot of musicians who were able to do this real ‘arty’ music, but there was also something in it for the average person— artists like Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane,” Greene explained. “There are things we as musicians can do to allow people in.” Showcasing songs from their latest collection, “Music Appreciation,” the quartet will provide the audience with both classic jazz tunes by such greats as John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, as well as with original pieces. “Of the 13 songs on our latest CD, I wrote three of them, my pianist wrote two, and my bassist wrote two,” Greene said. “The rest of them are basically our interpretations of other people’s songs, including John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, and there’s also one by a good friend of mine, William Kurk.” The quartet chose the title, “Music Appreciation,”

The Chris Greene Quartet, comprised (from left) of Steve Corley, Chris Greene, Marc Piane and Damian Espinosa, will be playing at The Livery on May 17. for a couple of reasons. “As a band, we decided that we wanted to play music that we like or that challenges us. So, on a literal level, it’s music that we appreciate. We incorporated a bunch of styles on this album,” Greene explained. “We went in 13 clearly distinct directions on this album.” However, the title of the collection also references the concept of a music appreciation course, like the ones Greene took while he was a student at Indiana
University-Bloomington. “On a subtler level, I wanted to approach it as a manifesto. The whole purpose of a music appreciation class is to give you an understanding of a certain type of music—what led up to it, and so forth,” Greene said. “As musicians, we are sort of self-described students of music as well. We’re trying to get better and study. What can we do to make our music better, sound better?” Greene will be joined onstage by Damian
Espinosa on piano and keyboards, Marc Piane on the double bass and Steve Corley on drums and percussion. “As far as work on the arrangements is concerned, we’re really collaborators,” Greene said. “I feel more like a musical director rather than the leader of the band. We work the pieces out together, but as the musical director, I kind of have final say.” While Greene was originally inspired to become a jazz musician after listen-

ing to the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane as a junior in high school, the quartet also incorporates other genres of music into their compositions. “I’ve been very much influenced by the masters of the past, but it’s 2014, and there’s a lot of music that’s come through the lexicon since then,” Greene said. “I like to listen to a lot of different styles—classical, hip hop, blues, gospel.” Rather than shunning the variety of musical influences he was exposed to while he was growing up in Evanston, Greene has chosen to weave them into his compositions. “I believe there’s really only two kinds of music— good music and bad. I think that there’s good and bad intent. I mean, if you’re making a whole lot of money, but you’re not really into it—if what you’re putting out isn’t really what you love—then the result isn’t going to be good.” As such, Greene hopes that audience members of all types will find something in his music that resonates with them. “Jazz started out as dance music. It’s still art to me, but there has to be that communication between me and the audience. After all, 95 percent of the audience isn’t musicians, and those are the people who will follow you.” Greene recommends that concert-goers come to his show with an open mind. “If you come to the show, leave all of your expectations or previous notions about jazz at the door, and just come to have a good time,” Greene suggested.
