ENTON HARBOR. Mich. — Anyone who has ever watched the Food Network recognizes the name Geoffrey Zakarian. After all, he is an Iron Chef, he has been a guest judge on numerous episodes of “Chopped,” is among the cast of “The Kitchen” and most recently hosted one of the Food Network’s newest shows “Cooks vs. Cons.” Now Michiana residents can see Zakarian in their own backyard as he will be one of four celebrity chefs who will be putting on demonstrations as a part of the 77th Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid May 24-29 at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor. Zakarian will be in the Fairway Club at 1 p.m. May 26. Gabriele Corcos and Debi Mazar of the Cooking Channel’s “Extra Virgin Americana” will appear at 1 p.m. May 27 and Carla Hall, who appeared on Bravo’s “Top Chef” will appear at 1 p.m. May 28. “We could not be more excited with the lineup of charismatic celebrity chefs at the KitchenAid Fairway Club this year,” said Deb O’Connor, director of global partnerships for KitchenAid. “Geoffrey, Carla, Gabriele and Debi are known for their dynamic personalities and they will definitely be fan favorites at this year’s championship with their remarkable energy and delicious recipes.”
Zakarian took time out of filming the second season of “Cooks vs. Cons” to talk about what he will be demonstrating in the Fairway Club. He will be preparing a pair of salads — lobster and burrata salad, as well as a shaved asparagus salad. “I go do demos all the time

and they are a great forum for questions,” Zakarian said. “I will try to be as edgy as possible.” Zakarian has played a part in the explosion of food throughout the world thanks in part to television through the Food Network and Cooking Channel. He said it is a great way to

get the word out. “In your restaurants you do 500 or 600 people a day, which is great, but when you are in an environment like TV and you get a million or more eyes watching you and that is even better,” he said. “It is very valuable for both your business and the ability to touch a lot of
people.” Zakarian has not been surprised by the success of cooking shows on television. The Food Network has been around for 25 years and he was watched its steady growth. “I have seen this happen for a long time,” he said. “So it does not surprise me because I am involved in it every day. It does surprise me how many people have a love and affinity for food. We sort of help bring it out.” Zakarian is no stranger to cooking competitions. Not only has he judged them, he has competed in them. So what is the strangest item he ever had to prepare? “Well, I have cooked a lot of crazy stuff,” he said. “On ‘Iron Chef’ we are asked to cook a whole range of things. One time we were asked to cook a five-course meal with scotch. It was sort of like cooking with cologne. So that was a very difficult one, but we did win that one actually. “There was a lot of drinking. You taste everything and by the time the fifth course came we were all hammered.” Also appearing in the Fairway Club will be Tim Laird from Brown Forman in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a spirits and bourbon expert who will be doing cocktail demonstrations at 2:30 p.m. May 27. Local chefs Luke Caenepeel from Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, will appear at 2:30 p.m. May 26, and Brad Hindsley of Spire Farm-to-Fork Cuisine in LaPorte, Indiana, will appear at 2:30 p.m. May 28.

Award-winning brew Crooked Ewe's Glasglow takes third prize at World Beer Cup
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — South Bend’s Crooked Ewe Brewery & Ale House took third prize in the Scotch Ale category for its Glasglow Butcher Scotch Ale in the 2016 World Beer Cup earlier this month. Known as the most prestigious beer competition in the world, the event saw 6,596 beers from 1,907 breweries representing 55 countries — a 38.5 percent increase in the number of entries from the 2014 World Beer Cup, which is offered every two years. Entries were judged by an elite international panel of 253 judges from 31 countries. “Brewing has no boundaries or borders,” said Charlie Papazian, founder of the Brewers Association. “The World Beer Cup recognizes the very best in the global community of brewers — their innovation, creativity

and the craft of beer and brewing. This is the first time Crooked Ewe has entered the event, having only been open for 10 months. “We wanted to use our first showing in the competition as more of a testing of the waters,” said Sean Meehan, co-owner, along with Andy Walton who heads up the brewery operations and developed and executed the recipe for the Glasgow Butcher. “We didn’t want to jump in to the more popular categories right off the bat, but felt confident that we’d be put on a good showing. We are still working to keep up on in-house production so that has been our primary focus for the first year. Crooked Ewe is open seven days a week and offers a full menu for lunch and dinner.

Pinot Noir labels are now making a rosé. More and more California wineries are adding a pink wine to their lineup as well. Instead of a laundry list of recommended wines, I’ll offer up just two. The first is Martin Ray Rosé of Pinot Noir. The Sonoma Russian River Valley wine is one of the best examples you’ll find of the Pinot version. It’s very reasonably priced at $15-$16 and can be found in better wine shops. The other recommendation is Chateau d’ Esclans “Whispering Angel” Rosé from Provence, France. Provence, in the south of France, is often considered home of the holy grail – the world’s best Rosé wines. Most of those wines are made of various blends of Grenache, Cinsaut, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and a local grape, Tibouren. The first release of Whispering Angel was in 2007 with approximately 150,000 bottles. Rosé sales and consumption in the U.S. continue to have remarkable growth year after year. Whispering Angel rosé helped change market pring is upon us and summer just a few weeks away. Just like the change of seasons, it’s time to sing the praise of dry rosé. Almost every year for the 8 years of this newspaper column dry rosé has been featured a time or two in warm weather. The columns usually start with a disclaimer that these pinks are not sweet but rather dry, satisfying and delicious wines. Rosé is one of the greatest porch-sipping wines of summer. But good dry rosé is a great food wine and is spectacular with seafood. The wine is diverse in that it’s made around the world and made with many different grapes. Breaking it down in the simplest of terms, red wine gets its color when the juice is left in contact with the purple skins. Rosé gets its signature pink color from greatly less time mingling with its own skin. There are so many to choose from but I strongly recommend two in particular. First, are the Rosé wines from Pinot Noir. Many of the great Oregon

Elkhart County Historical Museum workshop offers 1700s-era style meal
B
RISTOL, Ind. — Take part in this unique opportunity to help prepare and then eat a meal using recipes from the 18th and early 19th Centuries as part of the “History in the Tasting: Colonial Culinary Workshop” at the Elkhart County Historical Museum. The program will take place on Saturday May 28, starting at 4 p.m., and will run until 7 p.m. The event costs $25 per person to attend and you must preregister by calling (574) 5356458 to attend; a limited number of people can attend so reserve your spot as soon as possible. This workshop takes you back in time to by helping to create food from a time when the United States was still a young country. Leading participants in the making of the
food, will be historic reenactors Michael Dragoo and Kevin Carter. Both men have participated in the annual Gathering at Five Medals event, and have crafted a fantastic menu that will include onion pie, a number of breads and cheeses, a sausage dish from the 1750s, and much more. After helping to prepare the meal, guests will sit down to enjoy all the tasty food they’ve helped make. Speaking of the event, Museum Manager Kelby Rose said, “One of the least explored parts of history is food, and when you think about it, food is one of the most important pieces of history. Food and eating is what brought people together and cultures together. We want this event to have that same affect while teach-
ing people about the diets of our ancestors.” The Elkhart County Historical Museum fosters appreciation and preservation of local history and culture through exhibits, educational programs, and an accessible library and archives. The museum operates as a partnership between the Elkhart County Parks Department and the Elkhart County Historical Society. The museum’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday to Saturday. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gratefully accepted. For more information, visit. elkhartcountyhistory.org. The museum is located at 304 W. Vistula (SR 120) in Bristol.

‘Plain and Fancy’ celebrates 30 years
N
APPANEE, Indiana — The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres is celebrating its 30th anniversary of “Plain and Fancy” which opens May 25 and runs through Oct. 15. With more than 3,600 performances before audiences totaling 355,000, it has become one of the longest running musicals of all time. “Plain and Fancy” is a heartwarming tale of a sophisticated New York couple that experiences a glimpse of life and love on an Amish farm. Written by Joseph Stein with Will Glickman, “Plain and Fancy” opened on Broadway in 1955 where it ran for 462 performances and won a Tony Award for best musical. Since then, The Round Barn Theatre has become its national home with more performances than the original Broadway runs of “Hello Dolly!,” “My Fair Lady,” “Oklahoma,” “South Pacific,” “The Sound of Music,” and “The Music Man.” It has surpassed the original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, also written by Stein, which opened in 1964 and had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. Fiddler held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years until Grease surpassed its run. Nearly than 600 actors have performed “Plain and Fancy” since its debut at Amish Acres in 1986 where it played with only four actors and a single piano on a tiny stage in a constructed replica of the old Locke Township Meeting House. It played for seven seasons on the tiny stage before moving to The Round Barn Theatre constructed in 1991. From that expansion, The Round Barn Theatre has grown into a major regional theatre. Several former cast members have gone onto to star on Broadway and international tours since their time at Amish Acres. Perry Ojeda starred in the 1998 revival of Leonard Bernstein’s “On the Town;” Jerry O’Boyle has starred as Edna Turnblad in the international tour of “Hair Spray” for the
last three years; and Kent Lewis was recently nominated for a Jeff Award for his starring role as Johnny Cash in the production of “Ring of Fire” at the Mercury Theatre in Chicago. Among others, Laura Freeman has become a fixture on the Chicago stage and cabaret circuit and Jenny Sophia was recently seen in the Chicago Lyric Opera production of “The Merry Widow.” The season is dedicated to “Plain and Fancy” author Joseph Stein, friend and mentor of The Round Barn Theatre and for whom the theatre stage is named, who died in October 2010 at the age of 98. A memorial fund has been established to extend the influence of the Joseph Stein Young Actors Studio, which presents theatre for young audience productions as
well as summer acting camps, national touring children's productions, and free season tickets for kids at Amish Acres. This milestone anniversary season is chocked full of Broadway favorites, off-Broadway hits, and new works. “Forever Plaid” returns to open the season followed by “All Shook Up,” “Crazy for You,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Miracle Worker” and “A Christmas Story: the Musical.” The eclectic mix offered by The Round Barn Theatre makes it Northern Indiana's busiest stage with a season subscription base numbering in the thousands. It has produced over 150 main stage musicals, numerous second stage readings, dramas, and a slate of theatre for young audience productions.

“We owe all of our vibrancy as a regional theatre to the trust and encouraging support of our season subscribers," said founder and producer Richard Pletcher. Special events, discounts, receptions and celebrations are planned throughout the show’s 21-week run. The season long celebration will begin with an opening night reception for invited clients and guests in the Barn Loft Grill featuring sample appetizers from Amish Acres Plain & Fancy Catering menus. Dinner and Theatre packages for all “Plain and Fancy” performances may be purchased for 30 percent savings (nearly $50 for around $35). All attendees at most shows will receive a coupon for a free piece of Shoofly Pie in the Restaurant Barn. A video compilation of all of the past 30 seasons will be shown in the theatre's lobby throughout the year. A total of 300 tickets valued at $9,000 will be given away, 15 per week, via trivia contests through Facebook and other social media. Of the two-week long acting camps for children (“Plain and Fancy” and “Fiddler on the Roof”), those completing the “Plain and Fancy” camp will have the opportunity to perform in a main stage
“Plain and Fancy” performance. A $2,000 Double Wedding Ring Quilt (like the one given to Peter and Katie for their wedding gift in Plain and Fancy) is being quilted throughout the season in the Gross Daadi house on the historic farmstead. Elizabeth and Katy Borkholder will finish the quilt in late fall in time to give it away by drawing on New Year's Eve. Every visitor to Amish Acres may register to win the quilt during every visit throughout the year. The 2016 repertory season runs April 13 through Dec. 31 with 2 p.m. matinees and 8 p.m. evening performances. Season tickets remain on sale for only $129.95 for adults and children 4-11 are free with the purchase of an adult season ticket. A complete show schedule, ticket availability, and reservations can be obtained by calling the Box Office at 800-8004942 ext. 2 or online at AmishAcres. com. Theatre tickets can be combined with Amish Acres famous family style Threshers Dinner or a Theme Dinner served on select Friday nights at a savings. it became known that John Denver's “Country Roads” was known to bring a tear to his eye and it became tradition to load it into the jukebox at any opportunity. Now, thinking of adventures past and those we are still having, the song has the same effect on me. I will leave you with what is likely the most emotionally affecting song I know, “Murder In The City” by The Avett Brothers, from their EP “The Gleam II.” The song approaches with a dark tone, opening with lyrics “if I get murdered in the city,” but it is actually a message of love, hope, forgiveness and, ultimately, family. By the time Scott Avett is urging you to “make sure my sister knows I loved her,” the tears have come. Which songs or stories give you your own emotional reactions?
