UCHANAN, Mich. — A public reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 7 at the Buchanan Art Center, for a host of new exhibits by local artists. These include A Journey Along the Shores; Photography by Butch Welch, in the Roti Roti Gallery, Impressions of an Artist; Paintings by Samuel Gillis in the Showplace Gallery, and “Text Me” or (What is Black, White & Read All Over?); Mixed-Media and Fibers by Susan Adamek in the Hess Gallery and BAC Showcases. All exhibits open Wednesday, June 3 and run through Saturday, July 19. Butch Welch (A Journey Along the Shores) became interested in photography at an early age. Many summer hours were spent at the small library in his hometown of Kinderhook, New York, where he would pore over a Kodak book on color photography. Particularly taken by a photo of soft autumn light on a woodsy country cottage, these early memories eventually led Welch to develop a passion for landscape photography. During his freshman year at the University of Washington, Welch met another student with a camera slung over his shoulder. This soon-to-be best friend and roommate, showed Welch how to process and print black and white film in the lab of the communications department, where if you took photographs for the University of Washington Daily Newspaper, you could have free use of the lab. Welch photographed for the paper for the remainder of his time at the university and became a paid staff photographer his junior and senior years. Butch began photographing fullpage newspaper ads for JC Penney in the spring of his senior year, and upon graduation, started a commercial studio in Seattle. Welch spent the next 15 years photographing people and products for designers and advertising agencies. In 1985 Welch moved to Southern California where he spent 26 years as a

photographer and art director in Los Angeles. In 1992, Welch began creating black and white landscape photographs; in both gelatin silver and platinum, and exhibiting in galleries. Taking early retirement in August 2012, Welch relocated to St. Joseph, Michigan, to pursue his passion for fine art photography and his fascination with the Great Lakes. Artist Samuel J. Gillis (Impressions of an Artist) was born with a crayon in his hand and has been making art ever since. His early exposure included cartooning, an avid interest which developed into a formal education in fine art. Gillis’ stint at Columbia College, (Chicago) led to a meeting with noted fine art painter Eddwin Meyers who offered him the opportunity to be classically trained in an environment with great creative freedom at The Atelier Alternative. Gillis is a prolific artist whose work has been featured in museums and exhibitions including Chicago's National Museum of Mexican Art, John G. Shedd Aquarium and River East Art Center. Gillis’ paintings are part of international collections in Spain, Italy, New York, Guatemala, Russia and San Francisco. He has been featured in television, movies and publications nationwide, and he is a passionate private collector and supporter of global initiatives to creating more art and a better world. Gillis is a frequent donor to organizations including Y-Me Breast Cancer Awareness, Thresholds, Tree House Foundation, Chicago Food Pantry, East Lake View Neighbors, Children’s Memorial Hospital and the Make A Wish Foundation. In 2010, Gillis founded Gallery Swarm; a visionary art cooperative that features outsider and fine art, as well as creative resources for artists. Fiber/Mixed-Media Artist Susan Adamek (“Text Me”) has a passion for the art she pursues. She says it gets her out of bed every morning ready to

face the world with high expectations. In retirement, she finally has the time and privilege to work daily in her at home studios, where she continuously explores new ways and twists to use painting, sewing and quilting. After a year into college, Adamek left to get married and to subsequently have three active little boys. When her sons were in grade school, Susan went back to college and graduated with an AA from Black Hawk College, in Moline, Illinois and a BA in art and design from Marycrest College, in Davenport, Iowa. Adamek has lived in many places and has also pursued several careers, including working for years as an interior designer in both Detroit and Chicago. The corporate world and long working hours meant that her true passion for creating art had to often be put on the back burner. Only in her later years has Susan abandoned anything corporate for everything artistic. Adamek’s second husband Michael, lovingly, puts up with her art supply hoarding, unusual hours, and messy studios. He assists her in packing, lugging and moving her art to her various venues. Adamek’s work has been in many juried shows in Chicago, Goshen, South Bend, Independence and Vancouver, Canada. Susan has also been published in several magazines including: Belle Armoire, Somerset Studio, Cloth, Paper, Scissors, Country Women and Quilting Arts. The Buchanan Art Center is located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, Michigan. The Center features three galleries with rotating exhibits of regional artists’ works, a program of educational art classes for all ages, and a gift shop offering works of local artists. Current hours are Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Buchanan Art Center is closed Sundays. More information, including a schedule of classes, can be obtained at the Center or by visiting their website at: www.buchananartcenter.org.

East Race Mosaic group raising money for project

S

OUTH BEND — For the big 150th birthday weekend in downtown South Bend the community will feature Art Alley, which is an area near Seitz Park that will include various community art projects that include an artistic, beautification project for an otherwise bleak area along the East Race. Christopher Stackowicz has designed a 2,400 square foot recycled glass mosaic made from colored bottles and glass collected from businesses in South

Bend. The mosaic will beautify the large retaining wall along the sidewalk leading under Colfax along the East Race. The mosaic design will represent the swirling waters of the East Race. Chris plans to complete the entire project during SB150 Birthday Weekend with the help of community members and those attending the birthday weekend. A Go Fund Me account has been established to raise $5,000 in a few days to make it a reality.

Wine purchasing gets easier Indiana legislature rescinding ‘face-to-face’ rule

I

ndiana’s legislature showed a small bit of sanity in getting a shipping law passed for Hoosier wineries before closing the most recent session. Sen. Phil Boots, R-Crawfordsville, guided the legislation removing the face-to-face requirement for Indiana wineries to ship wine to their customers. At one point, the licensing fee went from $100 annually to $500. That was plain and simple another case of the legislators bowing to the powerful liquor lobby, funded largely by alcohol distributors. He urged supporters to keep the foot on the gas and in the end the fee structure was set up on a graduating scale depending on production and alcohol shipped. A fair, if not arguably unnecessary, solution. Indiana wineries could not be happier. “When the law requiring an initial face-to-face transaction became effective, it

literally destroyed our shipments to wine customers,” said Kim Doty, owner of French Lick Winery. “We lost 95 percent of our wine shipping sales. Our wine sold and shipped to customers in 2004 was about 10 percent of our total sales. Today with the face-toface requirement, our shipping sales are less than one tenth of 1 percent of our total sales. This requirement has also had a negative impact on the growth of our wine club with 99 percent of our wine club sales are shipped directly to the home.” Again, that face-toface requirement was added to legislation in 2008 as a token to the alcohol lobby but crippling, in particular, to small wineries. Wineries like French Lick were forced to play

along but at a steep price. “We have accumulated over 5,400 completed verification forms to date. We would have sold and shipped at least twice that if

not for the requirement.” The new law requires age verification but all shipping laws generally do. Wineries can meet the requirement by using an age verification

delivery service like FedEx or UPS. “We are thrilled with having the requirement rescinded,” Doty said. “Age verification will still be performed by the delivery company and we will pay additional fees for this service. We are confident that our wine shipments are properly handled in accordance with Indiana’s age requirement for liquor.” Jim Butler, of Butler Vineyards near Bloomington, has long been one of the industry’s leading spokespersons and advocates for sanity in wine shipping laws and more. “We are basically back to where we were 9 or 10 years ago,” Butler said. “With the face-to-face

requirement we lost 90 percent of our shipping business. Perhaps now we can build it back. This is a nice step forward. It is always a battle of the titans at the statehouse about alcohol issues, big money, big players. We are just little guys. It is one small step toward sanity.” Sanity? That seldom happens with the legislature and liquor laws. Just look at what happened this year with Sunday sales. A simple law was mangled with requirements that would have retailers build walls in existing stores to sell alcohol on Sundays. Fortunately, the legislature got it right for all Indiana wineries, big and small, in 2015. Howard W. Hewitt, Crawfordsville, IN., writes about wine every other week for more than 20 Midwestern newspapers. Contact Howard at: hewitthoward@gmail.com
