restoration during the summer of 2015, in order to restore it to historic condition. This exhibition honors this iconic part of St. Joseph history, shedding contemporary views and focusing on what has become a familiar daily site to many. The Gallery at Harbor Shores celebrates the talents of these artists and exclusively showcases Michigan artists in the rotating exhibits located on the second floor of the Inn at Harbor Shores. The art program has two components: a permanent collection displayed in rooms and public areas and rotating exhibitions in the Gallery, created by Susan Wilczak. The Gallery at Harbor Shores is open to the public and art on display is available for purchase. Joshua Nowicki Joshua Nowicki grew up in the Grand Rapids area and obtained his masters degree in anthropology from Western Michigan University. In 2011, Nowicki moved to St. Joseph and took a position at the Krasl Art Center. His earlier interest in photography expanded. “Working in an art museum coupled with living in such a gorgeous setting was absolutely inspiring,” Nowicki said. Joshua followed his passion and is now a full time photographer capturing inspiring images of Michigan. He is wellknown for his photos of the lighthouse in St. Joseph, Michigan. “The lighthouse embodies strength, hope and guidance. It preserves and shines strong even during a storm,” Nowicki said. “I am drawn to lighthouses every time the weather changes, because I know I am guaranteed a new and captivating experience.” His images have appeared in both local and national news: St. Joseph Today, Southwestern Michigan Tourist Council, National Geographic’s
website, Pure Michigan’s website, The Weather Channel, The Daily Mail, Huffington Post, USA Today and more. Laura Kraklau Laura Kraklau is a marketing and communications professional who has been telling the stories of organizations and the people connected to them for nearly 20 years.

Three tenors, one voice Celtic band to play at Acorn Theater By AUGUST GARRITANO
WHERE Acorn Theater Three Oaks, Michigan
T
HREE OAKS, Mich. — The Celtic Tenors have performed together for 14 years, and offer more than beautiful voices and musical knowledge. According to band members Matthew Gilsenan, James Nelson and Daryl Simpson, the whole group is comfortable in all genres. From classical and folk to Irish and pop, they bring the audience on a real musical voyage. The Celtic Tenors have broken new ground by stepping away from their classical roots, and adding a more contemporary edge. With this pioneering approach, they have welcomed a wider audience and fostered a fresh and invigorating style which has won them both critical acclaim and thousands of fans from all over the world. The only tenor group with a truly global audience, The Celtic Tenors work hard to give everyone who comes to see them a night to remember. Whether playing a neighborhood cathedral or major concert halls in international cities like New York, Amsterdam or Shanghai, audiences are assured of a professional, sparkling and most of all, good-humored performance. Recently, Off the Water had the chance to talk with Daryl Simpson from The Celtic Tenors. Here is some of the interview with Simpson:

Journeyman Distillery’s 'Kissing Cousins' to be released May 22 Bourbon finished in Wyncroft Winery barrel is one of distillery’s most sought-after products
T
HREE OAKS, Mich. — The annual release date of Journeyman Distillery’s Kissing Cousins Whiskey is one marked down on every whiskey fan’s calendar. This year’s release has been set for Friday, May 22 and will kick off Memorial Day weekend celebrations and mark the start of summer in Harbor Country. Kissing Cousins Whiskey is a unique limited batch whiskey created with the help of Buchanan’s Wyncroft Winery. The distillery’s Featherbone Bourbon ages for one year in new American white oak barrels. Only the best tasting whiskey from these barrels is then hand-selected to be finished for a year in a 1996 Wyncroft Winery cabernet sauvignon barrel. The extra time spent in the wine barrel adds complex, deep earth notes to the vanilla, spice and sweetness of the bourbon. The partnership with Wyncroft Winery began in the early days of the distillery. The winery, just a few
miles from the distillery, is owned by the family of one of Journeyman’s bartenders. “We’re really close like family, almost like cousins,” said Bill Welter, owner of Journeyman. “The kissing part of the name is a reference to the bourbon kissing their barrel.” Just over 700 375-millileter bottles were produced of this limited edition whiskey. Half of the bottles will be available for purchase at the distillery beginning at noon on Friday, May 22. Bottles at the distillery will retail for $34.99 each. The rest of the bottles will be distributed in California, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. Complimentary tastings of the spirit will be offered from noon until 4 p.m. on Friday. Kissing Cousins will also be available for purchase in the tasting room with 1 oz. pours for $5 and 2 oz. pours for $9. The spirit will make an appear-
ance in a special cocktail created for the release, the Black Magic, a combination of Kissing Cousins, Snaggletooth Coffee Liqueur and orange bitters. The celebration will continue throughout the weekend with live music from Ryan Panos on Saturday night from 7:30 until 10:30 p.m. and Danny Sandock on Sunday night from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.

Antique expert offers yard sale tips Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori Verderame
COLUMNIST
I
have been advising people about yard sales for decades. Here are my top tips for those of you who love yard sales—as buyers and as sellers. Many of us have spent a weekend driving around your favorite neighborhoods to shop on other people’s lawns. Typically you end up buying a few things that you really don’t need but you just can’t leave a neighbor’s home without a watering can, vintage poster and bunch of napkins. You spend $17 and call it a day. As a well-seasoned Ph.D. art, antiques, and collectibles appraiser, there are many things that people don’t know about yard sales. The first thing that most people don’t know about yard sales is that it is big business. You think it is just small time stuff with neighbors cleaning out the basement of old junk, but in reality, yard sales are the source of objects that command six figure price tags in other markets… markets far away from the front yard. That’s right, the high priced auction and internet markets for art, antiques, and collectibles use yard sales as a major source for inventory. And, many of the major auction houses and smaller estate auction houses regularly send out people known as pickers to get some of their auction inventory from yard sales. These people are sent to neighborhoods where the homes have reached the 50

Dr. Lori Verderame Arts & Antiques year mark assuming that their original owners are ready to move on to assisted living facilities or downsized residences. Most unknowing yard sale hosts just think that you are just offering your items to naïve shoppers and fellow neighbors, well, be warned. You are competing with the pros out there. These buyers know what you’ve got, what it is really worth, where to sell it for top dollar, and they are not in the game to tell you that you just made a big mistake putting out that Eastlake table or vintage Guerlain perfume bottle on the front lawn. And your price is all wrong too! These guys are going to get you down on the asking price and take away something very valuable that was once in your house and was once a treasured family heirloom. Know what you’ve got before you schlep it out to the front lawn. At my mobile website www.DrLoriV. com, you can send a photo of an object from a yard sale and I will tell you its
value before you buy it. This is how technology will help you cash in. Here is an example that will have you thinking twice before you have that yard sale. Recently, a $425,000 floral still-life painting that now hangs in the Houston Art Museum was originally sold at a California yard sale for $18. Yep, the original owner’s family didn’t know that they had a priceless piece of fine art, so they unknowingly priced it at a yard sale for $20. The picker working for the auction house got them down to $18 and the auction house later sold it to the Texas museum for a whopping $425,000. That could happen to you. Find out first. Tips for Buyers Ok, so you get my point, but you aren’t hosting a yard sale. You want to know about buying at yard sales. Here are my tips for buyers. • Bring cash as it will help your negotiating power. • Establish a budget and
stick to it. • Be polite but always negotiate. This isn’t friendship, this is business. Celebrity items bring big value. • If it is in poor condition, leave it on the lawn. • If there is a box of old jewelry that looks like junk, there is probably something overlooked in that box like a piece of 14k gold or sterling silver. • Bring a magnifying glass, lupe, or at least your reading glasses. • Ask the yard sale seller about the item’s background. Even if they don’t know a lot about the item, they still probably know more than you do about it. Dr. Lori Verderame is an antiques appraiser, nationally syndicated columnist and author, and award-winning TV personality with a Ph.D. in the field. She presents antique appraisal events, keynote speeches, and lectures to worldwide audiences. Visit www.DrLoriV.com. Follow Dr. Lori on www.Facebook. com/DoctorLori or call (888) 431-1010.

Film Festival continues focus on Jewish experience at Notre Dame By ADAM REBOLOSSO
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — Jewish film festivals have grown in popularity and relevance over the years across the country. No exception within the local community, the Michiana Jewish Film Festival enters its fifth year of bringing Jewish-themed cinema to the area next weekend, in a unique partnership with the Catholic University of Notre Dame. Orchestrated by the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley, the festival will show select films from May 11 to May 14 in Browning Cinema at Notre Dame that highlight the religion, identity and culture of the Jewish experience, with the hope of introducing modern issues and new ideas to local awareness. Through review of past evaluation forms, organiz-
ers at the Jewish Federation select films with consideration to South Bend audiences, choosing culturallyrelevant films on a variety of current topics that appeal to local interests. Many of these films are screened for the first time in the Michiana area, and usually include some Academy Award nominees and other acclaimed features.
Betty Signer, coordinator at the University of Notre Dame, believes the festival has made outstanding progress since its inception, and looks forward to a successful turnout for its five-year anniversary. Initially attracting a mostly-Jewish audience, she has enjoyed the broad community reach found in the Browning Cinema, as well
as the efforts of volunteers at the Jewish Federation in growing the event. “Our audience has gotten more diverse,” said Signer. “Now we attract people from various religions and age groups from the community and beyond. The festival has become a known event throughout our region.” This year’s film selec-
tion spans from historical perspective to current complexities. This year’s film selection will span historical perspectives, from revealing New York’s early life in the lower eastside with “Sturgeon Sisters” to the ever-lingering suffering of World War II and the Holocaust in “Run Boy Run,” as well as current
complexities of the IsraeliPalestinian conflict in “Green Prince” and the life as a foreign immigrant in “Transit” (one of two Academy Award nominees alongside “Gett,” a feature on Israeli gender inequalities in marriage and divorce). However a film frames the Jewish experience, Signer says the movies give the audience a new human dimension on topics that are quite complex, and are meant for everyone in the community to enjoy and reflect upon. “One doesn’t have to be Jewish to relate to the films being shown,” Signer said. “They are universal themes just like any movie.” While Hollywood enters its era of summer blockbusters and box-office hits, Browning Cinema and the Jewish Federation of Saint Joseph County look forward to an opening week that fills seats and minds alike.

Safety Tips for Seniors Living Alone • • •
More and more seniors are choosing to live on their own these days. Living independently can be an ideal situation, but you need to take steps to prevent home accidents and ensure that help can get to you in the event that it’s needed. 1. Avoid Slippery Conditions: Make sure floors are not slippery. Put down non-slip floomats in your bathroom and install “grab bars” in bath tubs and showers. Also install mats at the entry points to your house so floors don’t get slick on rainy and snowy days. 2. Remove tripping hazards: Electrical cords, rugs that don’t lie flat, and poor lighting are common causes of falls within the home. Make sure your light bulbs are the proper watt age and install nightlights to illuminate your floors at night. 3. Use a medical alert system: Medical alert systems provide affordable, one-touch access to emergency personnel. Should you need help, simply press a button on the medical alert bracelet or necklace and you’ll be connected to to a trained emergency specialist. 4. Get to know your neighbors: You don’t have to be best friends, but if you and your neighbors get to know each other, all of you are more likely to notice when something is awry. 5. Organize a daily check-in: Ask a loved-one or friend to call each day to make sure everything is okay. You can offer to do the same for them. If you don’t have a reliable person, your medical alert system offers a service to check in with you once a day. 6. Put a lock box on your door: A lock box allows family members, friends, trusted neighbors and emergency personnel to access your home when you’re unable to get to the door. 7. Keep lists of medications, allergies and personal information in your wallet or purse: This information can be invaluable to emergency medical personnel when they come to your home, especially if you’re unconscious or unable to communicate.

GoFishIN Workshop to promote family fishing
E
LKHART, Ind. — In partnership with the Indiana DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife, Leaders at Elkhart County Parks are excited to offer a free, GoFishIN workshop for adults who are interested in learning more about fishing and how to share that knowledge with others. This workshop is perfect for scout leaders, teachers, grandparents and any others who love fishing and get the chance to work with kids. Participants of the workshop will learn about fish biology, Indiana’s aquatic ecosystems, fish management in Indiana, basic angling skills and angler ethics. The entire workshop will be full of hands-on practice and fun activities and everyone will receive a binder with information, ideas and hand-outs. Upon completion of the workshop, all participants will become official Crew Captains, which allows them to take the gained knowledge and learned skills to their classrooms or communities. The GoFishIN workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Baldwin Schoolhouse in Bonneyville Mill County Park. There is no fee for the workshop, but preregistration is required by calling the Elkhart County Parks at (574) 535-6458 before Wednesday, May 6. More Elkhart County Parks’ information and a schedule of events can be found at www.elkhartcountyparks.org or on our Facebook page.
