10 WAYS TO
WASTE
YOUR ADVERTISING One and Done
1
Advertising works best when scheduled with frequency. An advertiser who runs one ad and waits for results is wasting money.
2
All successful advertising need to make a point. If the reader has to work to determine what the point is the ad is wasted.
3
Some advertisers feel every inch of an ad must be used, such as 75 things on sale in a two inch ad. It works best to make a simple single point.

#
Pointless
An ad targeting brides that runs in Tuesday sports may not be as affective as one in the Sunday bridal section. Fish where the fish are.
7
Advertisers who constantly change the look and styles of their ads lose the residual cumulative benefit of the ad schedule.
#
Too Many Points
Stopping Power If an ad doesn’t stop and pull a reader in, it is often wasted.
Goal Less
Any ad that hasn’t set a goal is wasted. Ads aimed at driving traffic look quite different then ads trying to change opinion or to drive image.
Miss the Target

Fickle Format
Point the Finger
Often, when an ad doesn’t work the finger is pointed at the media. Understanding what placement, frequency and message will most appeal your customers is a valuable and necessary learning process.

Christmas favorites as well as Pepper Choplin’s masterful cantata, “The Heart of Christmas,” with a complete orchestra. The Ripple Effect most recently performed May 30 on IUSB’s main stage as part of a benefit concert for the new Memorial Children’s Hospital. The concert’s finale, “Lift Your Voice, Children,” was composed by the group’s director, Shery K (music), and baritone, Delshawn Taylor (lyrics). The Ripple Effect was started last fall as an inclusive and varied group of performers who describe themselves as an unique ensemble-inresidence at Southside Christian Church (DOC), South Bend, “dedicated to the unification of community and transformation of social awareness,” placing “much emphasis on diversity, hope and healing, as well as mega-doses of fun!” The group has performed at a number of venues since the fall, and expects to continue to perform a challenging repertoire that includes everything from hymns and spirituals to jazz and musical theater (including “The Star-Spangled
Banner” at the South Bend Cub’s game June 16). Its aspiration is “to influence and encourage others to make a difference by building bridges, promoting kindness, and ‘rippling’ out in their own lives … not just a group of voices, but a collective truth-speaking voice in the community, by way of the enormous power of music.” The group’s founder and director, Sherry K (Sherryk.com), is a professional musical director and musician who has directed and performed at venues as varied as Florida dinner theaters and Opry Mills in Nashville, Tenn., to the South Bend Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Music Mart. “Our music is meant to reach out to a variety of groups and perspectives, to share the common joy we all find in music,” said Sherry. “We’re looking to grow in numbers and in support from others who like what we do, and who share our vision of building the kind of connections that make us a stronger community.” More about The Ripple Effect may be found on Facebook.

Chapin Mansion to host craft fair By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert @leaderpub.com
N
iles, Mich. — The Chapin Mansion will host its first Arts, Crafts & Antiques Fair June 20 as a way to raise money for the ongoing restoration of the historic home. The director of the Niles History Center said visitors can expect more than 20 high-quality vendors from the Michiana area during the fair, which is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 508 E. Main St., Niles. “It isn’t a yard sale,” said Carol Bainbridge. “They (the vendors) will be coming in with vintage and collectible items which really fit in with the style and manor of the mansion.” The arts and crafts portion of the fair will take place inside the mansion, while the antiques will be set up on the lawn. There will be no tours
during the fair. Items that will be available include garden art and furniture, paintings, books by a local author, handmade purses and knitted items, hair jewelry, ceramics, wood collage, handmade soaps and lotions, candles, stationery, wooden bowls, boxes, vases, used books, vintage collectibles and antiques. Sandwiches and snack items will be available from St. Mary’s Boy Scout Troop 579. “We are really pleased with the number of vendors we have and, hopefully, it
will grow each year,” Bainbridge said. The cost of booth rental will go toward future renovation work at the mansion, which was built in 1882 by Henry and Rubin Chapin, who earned their fortune in the iron ore industry in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mansion is built in the American Aesthetic style and features stunning stained glass windows, interior wood carving, fireplaces and chandeliers. Grilling out for vegetarians
I
’m not really big on fake meats. I never really was much of a meat eater to begin with, so I haven’t felt much of a need for meat substitutes in my meals. Especially the longer I’m vegetarian. I really just like vegetables and beans and nuts so that’s what I prefer to eat. However, we all have our weaknesses. Guilty pleasures, foods that are a little more processed that what we typically eat. For me that generally comes in two forms: soy chorizo and Tofurky sausages. I don’t know if it’s that summer is here and there is a smell of BBQs and cookouts in the air or the fact that I’ve been working late and traveling with little time for prep, but I’ve been on a real Tofurky kick lately. It’s a convenient staple in a pinch. Tofurky is a line of natural, soy based vegan sandwich meats, sausages, and most popularly, their Thanksgiving stuffed roast. I’m a particular fan of the Italian sausage and the beer brats. Just last week I had a non veg friend over for dinner and decided to fry up some of their Italian sausage because she’d never had anything like it before. She loved it! It just has such a nice spice and texture to it. Plus, the sausage holds together in a frying pan or on the grill, browning and crisping perfectly. If you’ve ever tried to incorporate vegetarian sausages to your meals, then you know that this is a feat! Tofurky is a
great low fat and cholesterol free alternative for anyone watching what they eat, not just vegans and vegetarians! Now that it’s summer and you never know when an impromptu cookout is going to pop up, it’s a good idea to keep the beer brats in the freezer at all times. I usually thaw them in beer then either simmer them in about an inch of beer in a frying pan or boil for about 10 minutes in the beer and then grill. Top the brat with sauerkraut and mustard and you’re good to go! I usually pair with a side of my Jalapeno Potato Salad, some Super Spicy Corn and Quinoa Salad, and green beans. It’s just good planning to keep a package or two of these along with a couple of cheap beers around. Having some frozen staples can really help you keep from eating garbage that you don’t want to be eating and from going hungry. I was at a BBQ once where literally the only vegetable was a serrano pepper, so I had to make myself a serrano sandwich on a dry white bun with and bloody mary chaser. Needless to say, my stomach was not entirely thrilled with this menu. Don’t let this happen to you! Potawatomi Zoo announces birth of rare Amur Leopard cubs S OUTH BEND, Ind. — Potawatomi Zoo residents Pearl, 13, and Sergei, 17, are new parents to three extremely rare Amur Leopard cubs born at the Zoo on March 20. Mom and the cubs are doing great. Amur Leopards, the world’s rarest big cat, are considered a critically endangered species with only approximately 70 remaining in the wild and just over 100 in Zoos. High death rates in the wild are
due to poaching and loss of habitat. Efforts at breeding Amur leopards in captivity have been marginally successful at best with no births in Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) facilities last year. Potawatomi Zoo’s three cubs are the only surviving Amur leopard cubs in North American zoos so far this year. This puts Potawatomi Zoo on the conservation field map in terms of the Amur Leopard Species Survival Plan
(SSP) program’s breeding efforts. To add to the excitement of this landmark birth, the cubs received their first veterinary check up on May 14 and were given a clean bill of health by Zoo Staff Veterinarian Dr. Ronan Eustace who also administered their first round of vaccinations. “Over the last few years there have been few to no Amur Leopard births in North American zoos. For Potawatomi Zoo to have
three of these very rare cubs born right here in South Bend is a great achievement,” said General Curator Josh Sisk. Potawatomi Zoo Executive Director Marcy Dean added, “The fact that we have the only three in the country is fantastic for both our Zoo and the population overall. This puts Potawatomi Zoo on the map both locally and globally. We are thrilled to contribute in such a meaningful way to the survival of this critically
endangered species.” The Potawatomi Zoo, a participant in the AZA’s SSP program for Amur leopards, is actively engaging in breeding genetically healthy Amur leopards to help populate this critically endangered species. Amur Leopards are only found in Far Eastern Russia and Northeast China. The Amur leopard cubs will not be available for public viewing for another month or two, due to both age and size. The Zoo has
also put together a marketing package featuring photos and videos of both mom and the cubs for media. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Potawatomi Zoo exceeds the standards for Zoos in animal care and quality of life, conservation and education programs. The Zoo officially opened for the season on April 3rd. For more information, go to the www.potawatomizoo.org or call (574) 288-4639.
