in southwest Michigan
S
T. JOSEPH, Mich. — The Heritage Museum will celebrate the grand opening of its newest exhibit, Work and Play: Sports in Southwest Michigan, with a free admission day on Sunday, June 14, from 12-4. Families are invited to visit the new exhibit and enjoy snacks and crafts as part of the celebration. Museum Director Christina Arseneau said that the topic of sports was chosen as a fun and accessible way to explore the region’s history and how local events are tied to national trends. “Whether soccer mom, super fan, or star athlete, sports play a role in nearly everyone’s life," Arseneau said." Past, present, and future are connected through historic sporting tournaments, living memories of school championships, and athletic projects designed to bring the community together.” Sports in Southwest Michigan takes visitors back to the late 19th century, when the sports craze started with baseball. Following the Civil War’s end in 1865, a wave of industrialization swept across the newly reunited nation. Industrial reforms allowed workers more free time and the health benefits of physical activity were becoming widely recognized. Troops played baseball in Civil War camps and veterans returning home spread its popularity, setting baseball on a course to becoming America’s national pastime. Industries began sponsoring baseball teams, offering players “day jobs” so that they could play ball at night. This phenomenon was mentioned in the 1989 movie, Field of Dreams. The popularity of sports quickly took hold in southwest Michigan. St. Joseph’s Auto Specialties Company (Ausco) formed its own baseball team which won the 1946 National Semi-Pro championship. Other businesses sponsored athletic teams, from bowling clubs to golf leagues. Historic sporting events have taken place here. In 1920, boxing’s World Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey defended his

The Auto Specialties Company of St. Joseph was responsible for the most ambitious company-sponsored local sports program. The company sponsored Auscos baseball team won the National Semi-Pro Championship in 1946 title in Benton Harbor. Today, Harbor Shores hosts the Senior PGA Championship. Geography has shaped sporting activities: our proximity to the water allows for maritime sports, our hills create challenging golf courses, and our four seasons provide opportunities for sports ranging from vintage baseball to ice hockey. The development of local industry will be explored through sports and recreation, as many area companies, such as Whirlpool, Auto Specialties, and Benton Harbor Malleable, sponsored sporting activities and encouraged employees to participate. Sports in Southwest Michigan offers something for all ages. “It is our hope that several generations will visit together,” Arseneau said. “Grandparents will share memories of cheering on their school teams, while children will find inspiration from names like Muhammad Ali and Babe Ruth, all while playing together.” Children can try an early version of basketball, which was first played by throwing a soccer ball into a peach basket. A reproduction House of David baseball bus, complete with beards, offers a fun photo opportunity. Golf, cheer, and football are among the other fun handson activities. A number of rare artifacts are on display, including autographs from sports legends, vintage baseball uniforms from the Auscos and the House of David, and the jersey worn by Joique Bell when he
played football for Benton Harbor High School. Schools sports are a major part of the exhibit. Southwest Michigan schools hold several state titles, and athletes from the area have played for the NBA, NFL, and MLB. Many local athletes, coaches, and athletic directors have shared their stories and highlights from these interviews will be playing in the exhibit. Beyond baseball, football, and basketball, sports with a history in area, such as judo and horseracing, are explored. Emphasizing the opportunities opened up by Title IX legislation, several female athletes are highlighted, as well as the role of the local YWCA. Athletics also played a role in opening doors for minorities throughout society. The opening of Work and Play: Sports in Southwest Michigan coincides with the Heritage Museum’s 50th anniversary. The Heritage
Museum and Cultural Center, once known as the Fort Miami Heritage Society, was founded in 1965 to bring people together and serve the community. A number of activities are planned to mark this important date, including an anniversary campaign. Executive Director Amy Zapal said, “We are honored to be the home of our community’s history and look forward to the next 50 years.” The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center is located at 601 Main Street in St. Joseph, Michigan. Regular admission to Work and Play: Sports in Southwest Michigan is $5 for adults and $1 for children 6-17. Ages 5 and under are free. Admission is always free for Heritage Museum members. Admission fees also include entrance to the lower level exhibit, The Big Three: Boat and Shipbuilding in Benton Harbor. Call (269) 983-1191 or visit www.theheritagemcc. org for more information.

Summer series returns to Dowagiac this weekend
D
OWAGIAC, Mich. — As the Beckwith Park Summer Concert Series prepares to launch its 2015 season, the Dowagiac Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is pleased to announce Huntington Bank for the eighth consecutive year has agreed to underwrite the popular $5,000 fine arts program that opens this Thursday. Debbie Knapp, West Michigan marketing specialist in Grand Rapids for Huntington Bank, and Cindy Rolback, branch manager of the Dowagiac office, joined Vickie Phillipson, DDA program director, in making the joint announcement. Similar to a British-style ensemble, the 25-member Southwestern Michigan College (SMC) Brass Band opens the series this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Beckwith Park, located at the corner of Front and Beeson streets in the downtown. A member of the North American Brass Band Association, SMC’s brass band was founded in January of 1992 by its current director, Dr. Jonathan Korzun, who also serves as the director of bands at Southwestern Michigan College. Having coordinated the 10-week summer arts program, Phillipson extended her appreciation to Huntington Bank and said she is also pleased to welcome the return of SMC’s brass band to this year’s line-up of entertainers. The Thursday evening con-
certs, featuring lawn-chair seating, begin at 7:30 p.m. “One of three bands at Southwestern Michigan College, the brass band is composed of community members, who are both amateur and professional musicians; SMC students; and talented area high school students,” Korzun said. “The band is a British-style ensemble, which was modeled after the brass bands that are so popular throughout Europe.” The Southwestern Michigan College Brass Band gives regular performances
both on and off-campus, including concerts at the John E.N. Howard Band Shell in St. Joseph, and the Niles Riverfront Amphitheater. Due to the size of the brass band, instrumentalists will be situated on Beeson Street, rather than beneath the Haggin-Wimberley Memorial Bandstand. Phillipson said arrangements have been made to close Beeson Street to motorists Thursday afternoon in preparation for that evening’s concert. The Beckwith Park Summer Concert Series is presented Thursday evenings in the downtown through Aug. 13. Entertainment this season, which ranges from the Big Band sound to Bluegrass, Folk and pop music of the 1970s and ‘80s, also features: Out of Favor Boys, June 11; Tony Fields, June 18; Lake Effect Jazz Big Band, June 25; Lighthouse Chorus, July 9; Jared Knox Band, July 16; Soltre', July 23; Big Boss Blues, July 30; Schlitz Creek on Aug. 6 for Huntington Night; and A Touch of Country, Aug. 13. Should any of the concerts be rained out, Aug. 20 is a scheduled raindate. Phillipson said, “Huntington’s willingness to underwrite the $5,000 concert series is a wonderful blessing for our community, especially in these uncertain times, when funding for the arts is limited.” “At Huntington, we’re grateful to have the opportunity to give back to our communities,” Knapp said. “We invest time, talent and resources where we live and work. As we do so, together we make our communities strong.”
Summer’s coming... Don’t be a target!
“An important part of any community is its arts and cultural programs. Whether through dance, instrumental music or song, Huntington strongly believes in supporting the many forms of arts and cultural programs that enhance the overall quality of life that we all enjoy.” “Huntington Bank remains true to its values of supporting the local communities that we serve,” Rolback said. “We are proud to once again support the Beckwith Park Summer Concert Series. We believe in investing in community events and programs, which allows us to connect with our community, and to those activities and programs we share a passion for.” "We look forward to continuing our partnership with the DDA, which plays a leading role in growing this community,” Rolback said. “As a bank invested in people, Huntington is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Dowagiac Downtown Development Authority as we grow our community's cultural arts." The Beckwith Park Summer Concert Series attracts a loyal and returning audience of music enthusiasts from Dowagiac and surrounding communities. The summer fine arts series is a spin-off of the original music program that was hosted by the Historic Dowagiac Association, which was once held on the lawn outside the old City Hall. Phillipson has coordinated the Beckwith Park concert series for 19 years. To receive a concert brochure, call the Chamber of Commerce and DDA at (269) 782-8212.

Farmers markets
in full bloom By ADAM REBOLLOSO
M
ICHIANA — It’s a new kind of agricultural revolution, but it doesn’t stop at produce. Farmers markets have been sprouting around the nation, growing in size and popularity as grocery centers and social spots for local-minded consumers. Lisa Croteau, one of the organizers of the Niles French Market, began seeing the fruits of the labor at her local market’s May 28 season-opening. With its usual location in downtown Niles staging bridge reconstruction, this year’s market is held right across the St. Joseph River in partnership with Lakeland Hospital. “[They] are gracious to host us,” Croteau said. “Buying local food supports the local economy…plus there’s nothing better than fresh-picked produce, is there?” With many convenient market alternatives from smaller grocers to massive box stores, farmers markets have flourished on the notion of community and fresh, farm-to-table offerings. Shoppers don't need to worry about where their food comes from or what agents were used in its harvesting — the sources are right there behind a vendor stall. And these markets have grown to become more than that while still supporting the local producers, expanding beyond fruits and vegetables to include anything
from jams and meats to jewelry and handcrafts. Harbor Market in Benton Harbor includes a variety of vendors selling produce, baked goods, crafts and more. Coordinator Rod Lawrence describes it as an outdoor festive market place, bringing community spirit and even live music every Friday. “It’s an opportunity to help young entrepreneurs and micro businesses get a start,” Lawrence said. “And also find great fun and fellowship.” As with any business, local farmer and artisan markets experience varying degrees of success. Granger Farmers Market announced the permanent closing of its historic Bittersweet Center location early this year. It has since relocated to an open-air setting on Elm Road, and the enthusiasm is still evident on its Facebook page as they make jokes at occasional weather challenges. South Bend Farmers Market continues its longstanding tradition on Northside Boulevard since being incorporated in 1924, boasting 96 vendor stalls and its Farmer’s Market Café, where guests can dine on meals made daily from the fresh ingredients that surround it. While the world expands and draws attention elsewhere, these farmers markets maintain focus on their local communities, offering fresh fare and a lively spirit to remind people of where their roots lie.

A bikini-approved lunch
L
ast week I wrote about how to eat right when you’re traveling or on the go, and a big part of that was packing your own food. Just before taking off for Nicaragua a couple weeks ago, I made an Instagram post showcasing some of the food I’d packed for my trip. One of my followers asked me what type of salads I pack to take on such long journeys. On that particular trip, I had made a green salad from a box of mixed greens and packed a 2 ounce bottle of dressing in with my liquids, but that’s not the type of salad I typically travel with. If you’re traveling all day — whether it be a plane to far off destination, a weekend road trip up north, or even an all day beach outing — you need some healthy and hearty snacks that will hold up. You also want something filling since you don’t know when you’ll get your next real meal. I make a lot of quinoa salads, kale and beet salads, broccoli salads, taboubleh
tured in Bella NYC Magazine one summer as a bikini-approved poolside lunch dish. One of the things I love most about this dish as that it really just calls for around the house ingredients you can throw together in a flash. It’s perfect for all those impromptu boat outings!

Niles hosted its annual Bluegrass Festival, re-envisioned as the Niles Family Carnival and Bluegrass Festival — last weekend, and despite rainy whether, it was better than ever. In addition to a long list of musical acts, guests were offered an expanded food selection and more craft vendors, more carnival style games and bigger rides, which accommodated children and adults alike.
