Six vineyards. Four breweries. One evening filled with wining, dining and donating. That’s what awaits visitors of the Lee Memorial Foundation’s third annual Wine and Beer Tasting, which take places from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 9 at Don and Vicary Blackmond’s sesquicentennial farm on Indian Lake. Like in previous years, the proceeds collected through ticket sales and sponsorships will go toward Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital. On Thursday, the six-person planning committee met at Indian Lake Golf Course to begin their preparations for the evening of giving and libations. The Foundation is currently looking for sponsors and volunteers to assist during the event, said Beth

After only four years of operation, The Timbers of Cass County is already receiving national recognition for the level of care for its 102 residents. Earlier this week, the Dowagiac nursing home and rehabilitation center received its first Commitment to Quality Award from the American Heath Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living. The program honors nursing care facilities that have implemented projects with that demonstrably improved the quality of care for its occupants. The Timbers received the award’s bronze level recognition, the first of three levels, for its yearlong efforts to prevent slipping accidents within its population, said Administrator Karen Schalte. “We designed a program

Beginning on June 30, the Dowagiac Alternative Wellness Center will extend their weekly hours, open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. “The practice is actually growing here, and with more hours we can better serve our customers,” Gonzales said. advantage of that.” Despite the intense windstorm that buffeted visitors at the first tast-
tor to handle a majority of operations at the Dowagiac office. Patients who are already attending the clinic will be in capable hands, as the two doctors share a similar methodology and philosophy when it comes to spinal care, Gonzales said. “He’s got a great personality,” Gonzales said. “He’s willing to do whatever it takes to get patients better. That’s exactly what I do, so he’s a very good match for us.” Wickey, 37, is a relative newcomer to the field, graduating from National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois in Dec. While earning his degree, Wickey spent more than a year working at clinics in Illinois, caring for patients with back, shoulder, headaches and other muscle concerns, he said. “I’ve seen a lot of different things, about how touch and chiropracty can change people’s lives,” Wickey said. “It’s not just a job for me.”
187 staff members at the facility made some dramatic changes, including adding a nursery manager to their weekend schedule and increasing their attention of residents who were at greater risk of falling. “Over the course of a year, we saw a marked reduction, from 19 percent to only 10 percent,” Schalte said. ing, the inaugural event was a great success for the foundation, with 200 tickets sold, Cripe said. The following year an additional 50 tickets were sold. “We’re shooting for 300 this year,” Cripe said. So far, organizers have already sold 150 tickets for this year’s event, without any real advertising, Cripe said. Last year, the event also generated $4,500 worth of sponsorship money for the foundation. Tickets for the event are $50, and come with a free souvenir wine glass. People interested in purchasing tickets or sponsoring can contact Cripe at (269) 783-3026 or at BethCripe@borgess.com.
Like Gonzales, Wickey is focused on not only treating patients, but also on teaching them techniques such as yoga and stretching to help them maintain their spinal and muscular health. “I had a rehab teacher in school who really inspired me to go the direction of self care, of taking care of yourself,” Wickey said. “You can take the strictly medical approach, where the doctor does everything himself. However, that’s not really helping you live the rest of your life in a healthy manner.” In addition to adjustments, Alternative Wellness Center also offers massages, rehabilitation services, and yoga classes. Next month, the office will begin offering a promotion for first time patients, offering an exam consultation adjustment for $40. Patients will also receive a $40 gift certificate for Creekside Greenhouse for their visit.
ing and designing interventions to manage them was quite arduous, as Schalte described it. Despite that, the staff were overjoyed when they heard that their yearlong work had paid off with the bronze award. “We were elated,” Schalte said. “Not every facility earns this award. It’s awesome to be recognized by a national association within our industry.” After receiving this
award, the Timbers is eligible for the silver level award next year, which they intend to go for. For now, though, they concentrating improving their steadily declining fall rate while working to maintain their high occupancy rate. “I think our quality distinction will support our already stellar reputation, and people will seek us out for our services,” Schalte said.

Visiting students ages 15-18, from around the world including Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and Thailand are seeking host families in and around Niles for the upcoming 2014-2015 academic school year. Host families are needed for the fall semester and full school year. Host families (traditional families, singles, empty nesters, etc.) serve as mentors and a home base for their student. Visiting students participate as active members of the family and integrate into their host’s daily routines and traditions just like any other family member. Hosting an international student is a great way to explore a new culture and promote a sense of lifelong
learning and adventure. “Every year our region plays host to hundreds of talented, top-oftheir-class students with the lifelong dream of studying in America,” said Joseph Bissell, iE-USA’s Great Lakes Regional Director. “Michigan’s spirit of hospitality and focus on academic enrichment makes it an ideal environment to develop cultural exchange and promote international diplomacy on a local level.” iE-USA, the sponsoring program, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting education and understanding through intercultural and academic exchange. iE-USA is certified by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel and strictly adheres to all U.S. Department of State Student
Exchange Program regulations and guidelines. Exchange student participants undergo an extensive application and orientation process in their home country prior to being accepted into iE-USA’s program. Each student is responsible for his/her own spending money and full health insurance coverage. To learn more about how to make the dream come true for an international high school exchange student, contact Michigan representative Emily Rolin at e.rolin@international-experience.net (269) 625-4662. Host families may review prospective student profiles online at iE-USA.org. Families interested in hosting this year must apply by Aug. 15, 2014.
Cass County COA starts grief support group SUBMITTED The Cass County COA is adding a support group at the Lowe Center for those who have experienced a loss of any kind. Grief is a process and support can mean a great deal as someone walks this path. The first meeting of the group will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. June 19. Starting in July, the group will meet monthly on the second Thursday of the month from
10 a.m. to noon. “The Grief Support Group is designed with the understanding that participants are at a tender stage and need help coping with feelings and how to move forward,” said Keryl Conkright, RN, COA Care Services Team Leader. “This group started as a three week grief work group with the members expressing a desire to continue on as a regular support group. We welcome others who have suffered the loss of someone impor-
tant in their life to join us as we learn healthy ways to heal from grief.” The Cass County COA Lowe Center is located at 60525 Decatur Road and Hwy 60 in Cassopolis. CTE courses prepare students for careers SUBMITTED LANSING— Sen. John Proos’ legislation to encourage more schools to offer career and technical education (CTE) courses and enable students to count them toward meeting the state’s high school graduation requirements is one step closer to becoming a law. The Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 66 in May and the House Education Committee approved the bill on Wednesday. It now awaits a passage by the full House. “We all support a rigorous education that prepares our children for success, but education is not a one-size-fits-all business,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “This initiative is about encouraging schools to work with their communities to offer high school credit for more flexible, careerbased programs. As a result we can give our students flexibility to get an education that meets their needs while also ensuring they meet the requirements to graduate from high school.” Gov. Rick Snyder recently repeated his call for an increased focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Michigan schools — objectives addressed in
Proos’ legislation. “My legislative colleagues, as well as the governor, understand the importance of applied learning in preparing future generations for success and meeting the skilled workforce needs of a growing economy,” Proos said. “There are thousands of job opportunities currently available throughout the state, including many in Southwest Michigan, yet they remain unfilled because employers cannot find enough workers with the necessary skills to fill the positions.” SB 66 urges more schools to offer CTE programs in partnership with a local business, labor group or post-secondary institution and strongly encourages that the programs award credit toward a college degree or an industry-recognized certificate. “Increasing coordination between skilled trades and technical fields and our schools can help give students a leg up on getting into college or getting a wellpaying job in areas like manufacturing and agri-business,” Proos said. “My bill is aimed at helping us fulfill three key goals: Educating our children, preparing them for success and meeting the skilledlabor needs of current and future Michigan employers.”
COA offering mahjong Mondays SUBMITTED The Cass County COA will be adding the game mahjong from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Lowe Center on Mondays. The game is a popular pastime all over the world and is a great way to socialize and stimulate brain cells! mahjong is known for its ability to keep your mind sharp because of the mental complexity of the game. “The players who are attending mahjong on Mondays tell us that the game is an excellent mental workout —
and lots of fun,” said Sandi Hoger, active living team leader. “We found that there are so many who play mahjong in the community that we decided that it made complete sense to have a group here at the COA. The group will meet every Monday from 1 to 4 p.m. The nice part is that players are willing to teach newcomers.” So many people are looking for activities that stimulate brain activity, and mahjong is touted in international medical journals for its ability to “produce con-
sistent gains across all cognitive performance measures.” The amazing thing is that the brain gains last long after the game has been played. If you are interested in attending the mahjong group all that is necessary is to show up. If you want to be part of a team, or wish to bring your team, please contact Sandi Hoger at 4458110 so that a table is in place for your group. The Lowe Center is located at 60525 Decatur Road and M-60 in Cassopolis.

Time is running out for Michigan road fix deal By Paul Egan & Kathleen Gray Detroit Free Press (MCT) Republican and Democratic leaders in the state Senate were pessimistic Wednesday about resolving Michigan’s roads funding problem before the Legislature breaks for the summer, but that hasn’t stopped advocates for better roads from stepping up the pressure as talks were expected to continue today. A May poll done for the Detroit Free Press/WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) and our statewide media polling partners by EPICMRA of Lansing showed fixing the roads is the new No. 1 priority for Michigan voters — surpassing job creation and the economy for the first time in years — and they are willing to pay higher taxes to get the job done. But the 25-cents-a-gallon gas tax hike proposed by Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, R-Monroe, has drawn negative reaction from motorists and is a tough pill for lawmakers to swallow — and vote for -- especially in an election year. Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer said Rich-

ardville’s proposed gas tax increase “will be, bar none, the largest tax increase many of us will ever vote on in our legislative careers. “This is not an easy vote,” and the issue calls for tough negotiations, said Whitmer, D-East Lansing. Both the House and the Senate are expected to break for the summer before the end of this month — likely within the next two weeks. If they don’t act be-
fore the break, lawmakers can pick up where they left off in the fall, but another construction season will be lost. The Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council — one of several business and labor groups pushing for more funding for roads -- turned up the volume on the discussion Wednesday. “We can’t wait any longer for the Legislature to continue the hand-wringing,” Zane Walker,
the council’s president, said in a news release. “We need action now. Michigan’s construction season is too short for more delay. “We’ve already lost this season, and if we wait much longer we’ll lose next season.” Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has repeatedly called for measures to raise an extra $1.2 billion a year or more to fix and maintain the state’s crumbling roads and bridges. He and oth-
ers say that at least that much is needed just to protect the state’s infrastructure investment and keep roads and bridges from getting any worse. Snyder told the Free Press editorial board on Wednesday that he remains hopeful a road funding package will be passed before the summer break. But even though time is running out, he is not running away from finding a solution. “I would like to get it done,” he said. “I’m not going to go away on this issue if it doesn’t get done.” Richardville’s proposal -- part of a plan to raise about $1.5 billion extra a year — would hike pump prices about 25 cents over four years. It would eliminate the 19-cents-per-gallon tax on regular fuel and the 15-centsper-gallon tax on diesel fuel, and replace both with a new percentage tax at the wholesale level. The tax would start at 9.5 percent in 2015 and gradually increase to 15.5 percent by 2018. The House has passed a more modest package, intended to raise about $450 million, featuring a 6 percent wholesale gas tax.

* PRESS RELEASE * HYDRANT FLUSHING AND FLOW TESTING PROGRAM TO BEGIN City water mains will be flushed beginning the week of May 19, 2014 and will be ongoing intermittently throughout the months of May, June, and July until all the hydrants have been flushed. Public Services and Public Safety personnel will be flushing the hydrants and will be performing this function during daytime and evening hours. It will take several flushings to clear the water mains of accumulated iron deposits, and this may cause discoloration of City water in many areas. If the flushing discolors the water in your home, it is suggested that you drain your hot water tank to remove any rust particles that may have accumulated and flush your water pipes by letting the water run for 5-10 minutes. If you have any questions regarding water main flushing or the schedule, please contact the Department of Public Services Office at DPS-_Service_Request@dowagiac.org or 7828200. A trio of former area athletes helped Grand Valley capture the cup. They were Madie Rodts of Niles (cross country, track), Brianna Dinneen of Buchanan (track) and Andrew Vandenburg of Eau Claire (golf). West Texas A&M finishes as the runner-up for the title with 708 points. Central Missouri takes home third place with 653.75 points. Indianapolis, with 649.75 points, finishes in fourth place. Behnke honored by Wolverine coaches By SCOTT NOVAK scott.novak@leaderpub.com The accolades are continuing to roll in for the Dowagiac softball team. After struggling the past couple of seasons, the Chieftains turned things around in 2014. Dowagiac finished the season in the Division 2 District championship game and ended the campaign with a record of 25-12. The awards for the All-Wolverine Conference West Division and the Division 2 All-District team are expected to be released early next week. However, the Chieftains have already picked up an award as Mike Behnke has been named one of two Wolverine Conference Coach of the Year recipients in softball. Paul Gephart of Vicksburg is the other recipient. “We had a nice rebound year after a couple
of struggling seasons,” Mike Behnke said. “To me, being named coach of the year says the team was successful and that is what matters. It isn’t about my individual award, but the whole team’s award for their efforts this season. “It is a good feeling though that your fellow coaches think you are doing a good job. Three of the other four coaches in our division have been coaching for a while and won a lot of games and for them to think I was coach of the year this season for what we did is very gratifying.” Edwardsburg will have three coaches honored at the annual Wolverine Conference Banquet Nov. 19. Kevin Bartz (football), Heather Harley (competitive cheer) and A.J. Gaideski (baseball) will all be honored. See COACHES, page 14

D owa g i a c j u n i o r M at t Smith (above) and Dean Klann (left) were first team selections on the Division 2 All-District baseball team, which was announced earlier this week. All-district is the first step in the all-state process. Dowagiac’s Austin Broda (far right) was named to the Division 2 All-Academic squad. The all-district team was dominated by champion Niles with four players. Edwardsburg, which lost to the Vikings in 14 innings, had three players named to the first team.
Elks Junior Golf begins June 16
Champion Niles placed four players on the Division 2 All-District team, which was selected following last weekend’s tournament. All-district is the first step in the all-state selection process. Players named to the all-district team are now put up for all-regional following Saturday’s round of state playoffs. First team selections for Niles were Tate Brawley, Connor Glick, Tyler Clutter and Taylor Weldy. Niles’ Mike Vota was named Coach of the Year. Edwardsburg, which lost Broda to the Vikings in the 14-inning district championship game, placed three players on the squad. They were Dalton Raymond, Jessie Reinebold and Jackson Gaideski. Keith Boeker and Tyler Williamson were named to the all-district academic squad. Dowagiac had a pair of first team selections in Matt Smith and Dean Klann. The Chieftains’ Austin Broda was named to the allacademic team. Klann hit .378 this past season with two doubles, a triple and 14 RBIs. Smith hit .366 with 12 doubles and 23 RBIs. On the mound he was 4-3 with an ERA of 2.65. Smith struck out 43 and had 20 walks.
The Dowagiac Knights of Columbus are hosting their annual K of C Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament June 14 at Spruce Ridge Golf Club. The tournament will benefit the John Tuka/Tony Krukowski scholarships. The four-person scramble will begin at 9 a.m. Cost is $200 per team and includes greens fees, carts, lunch and beverages. Early entries, by June 1, are $180 per team. There will be special hole-in-one prizes, as well as longest drive, 50/50 and closest to the pin contests. For more information or to register, contact Richard Guernsey, tournament chairman at 783-0451, 782-4704 or Joe Foster, grand knight, at 782-4017.
